Advanced Textiles Expo Attracts Thousands To Orlando For Successful Event

ORLANDO, FL — November 14, 2023 — Advanced Textiles Association (ATA) completed its debut of Advanced Textiles Expo, formerly known as IFAI Expo, Nov. 1–3, in Orlando, FL USA.

This year’s event was again collocated with Sun Shading Expo North America, which is organized by Messe Stuttgart, the founders of R + T, the world’s leading trade fair for roller shutters, doors/gates and sun shading systems.

Advanced Textiles Expo and Sun Shading Expo North America combined to attract 4,517 attendees to the Orange County Convention Center where they had direct access to the textile and sun shading industries’ leading companies. Beyond the action on the show floor, both attendees and exhibitors networked and socialized at the Opening Reception as well as the crowd-favorite Industry Night.

375 exhibiting companies made up the combined show floor, displaying their latest products, equipment, and services. In addition to visiting exhibit booths, the show floor also hosted live equipment demonstrations, market update meetings and over 20 campfire education sessions broken out by Emerging Technologies, Specialty Fabrics, and Shade and Weather Protection markets.

“The first ever Advanced Textiles Expo is a wrap and we’re pleased with the positive feedback on the trade show and the many social networking events last week. Our 2nd year collocating with Sun Shading Expo North America brought new leads, more to see and learn.” said ATA President and CEO, Steve Schiffman.

Schiffman also added, “Besides the name change from IFAI Expo, which was the last step of a comprehensive rebrand of the trade association, we added many new show floor content options, including a live podcast, new education tracks and more. These are just the first steps of our long-term strategy of improving the value proposition for everyone. For 2024, in Anaheim, we are merging Smart Fabrics Summit, with our Emerging Technologies Conference and continuing our content evolution, bringing new attendees to the event which will give exhibitors more reason to participate in Expo than ever before.”

New this year was the Emerging Technologies Conference, which was held on Oct. 31, the day before the show floor opened. This conference offered a Plenary session and networking lunch followed by an afternoon of 12 classroom education sessions dedicated to the emerging technologies and smart textile markets. Topics included wearables, aerospace advancements, biomedical applications, nanotechnology, automation and more.

Also taking place on Oct. 31 were two deep-dive workshops. The topics of the workshops were “Emotional Intelligence Training” taught by Dr. Melissa Furman of Career Potential LLC and “Mastering Leadership for the Modern Sales Team” taught by Toby Payne of Sandler Training. Each workshop supplied attendees with valuable information to help improve their company.

Advanced Textiles Expo also hosted 15 market-specific classroom education sessions focused on shade and weather protection, supply chain challenges, marine, sustainability, workforce development and business operations, along with a wealth of other specialty fabrics and advanced textile-focused content.

Highlights at Advanced Textiles Expo included the Opening Reception, which took place just outside of the show floor, allowing participants to socialize and listen to music. Industry Night at Blake Shelton’s Ole Red was a popular event where attendees enjoyed live music from ATA member band, Hangin’ by a Thread, which is comprised of industry veterans along with some guest vocalists.

Keynoter Jeff Butler engaged attendees with his presentation “Building an Effective Multigenerational Workforce”, focusing on how to manage and work with various generations.  The Annual Fun Run/Walk also returned to Expo this year and allowed participants to either run or walk around the mapped-out route near the Orange County Convention Center.

Outstanding new products and materials were recognized on the show floor at their booths as a part of this year’s Show Stopper Program. These companies received an award and winner’s flag that is displayed in their booth to signify their innovative work.

Attendees also had the opportunity to take part in the ATA Division Update Meeting that took place in the ATA Hub on the show floor. This meeting encompassed all divisions and member groups of ATA to provide updates and valuable information on how ATA membership can serve every member’s individual needs.

Join thousands of your industry peers next year in Anaheim, CA  for Advanced Textiles Expo 2024. The official dates are Sept. 24–26, 2024, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA USA.

Asahi Kasei Will Exhibit Its Solutions For A More Sustainable Material Life Cycle In The Sportswear Industry At ISPO Munich 2023

DÜSSELDORF And TOKYO — November 14, 2023 — Asahi Kasei will exhibit its solutions for a more sustainable material life cycle in the sportswear industry at ISPO Munich 2023, the leading international sports trade fair, from November 28 to November 30 in Munich, Germany.

Displays include a novel manufacturing technology for synthetic fibers and textiles from bio- mass feedstock, the ECOSENSOR™ fabric collection by Asahi Kasei Advance, ROICA™ premium stretch fiber, and RespiGard™, a PFAS and solvent-free waterproof membrane.

A sustainable material life cycle starts with the production of raw materials. For the first time at ISPO, Asahi Kasei will showcase its novel process technology to produce biobased basic chemicals from bioethanol. This breakthrough technology makes it possible to manufacture most synthetic fibers and plastics from biomass feedstock, including those that had been considered difficult to manufacture from raw materials other than petroleum. This technology enables reduced CO2 emissions and petroleum usage.

ECOSENSOR™ fabric collection

Grades from the ROICA Eco-Smart™ family will also be displayed in a designated area of the booth. ROICA™ EF is a recycled stretch fiber which features 58% pre-consumer recycled content, and is certified to OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 in the product class 1 category. ROICA™ V550 is a degradable yarn which decomposes into CO2 and water, and has obtained a C2C (cradle-to-cradle) Certified Material Health Certificate™.

RespiGard™ membrane

RespiGard™ is a unique lightweight membrane designed for apparel with the optimal combination of waterproofness and breathability. The membrane is produced using a solvent-free manufacturing process with a low carbon footprint. The polypropylene material is recyclable and PFAS-free*. Outdoor sportswear and coats utilizing RespiGard™ have won numerous awards, including the 2021 Performance Days Performance Award and the 2019 and 2020 Outdoor Retailer’s Innovation Awards.

ROICA™ premium stretch fiber

To contribute to closing the material life cycle in the sportswear and apparel industry, Asahi Kasei and partner company Microwave Chemical are currently developing a new chemical recycling process for polyamide 66. The process utilizes microwaves to depolymerize polyamide 66 and directly obtain the monomers, which can then be used to manufacture new polyamide 66 for apparel. Asahi Kasei will describe this process at a presentation on November 29 from 11:30–12:00 at Munich Trade Fair Center, Hall B1, Pink Stage.

Be sure to visit Asahi Kasei’s ISPO exhibit in Hall B1, Future Lab Brand New Area: Booth 104.

Culp Home Fashions Recognized As Environmental Partner By North Carolina Department Of Environmental Quality

HIGH POINT, N.C. — November 14, 2023 — Culp, Inc. (together with its consolidated subsidiaries, “CULP”) today announced that the company’s mattress fabrics division, Culp Home Fashions, has been recognized as an Environmental Partner by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Environmental Stewardship Initiative.

The Environmental Stewardship Initiative (“ESI”) is a voluntary program administered by the Division of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service and is designed to promote and encourage superior environmental performance in North Carolina. Companies interested in participating in the ESI program must apply to the Department of Environmental Quality and be approved by the DEQ Internal Workgroup.

ESI Environmental Partners are North Carolina businesses that are working to develop a systematic approach to improving their environmental performance. As an ESI Partner, Culp Home Fashions must demonstrate a commitment to meet and go beyond compliance requirements, set, and make progress towards environmental performance goals, and agree to report annually to the NC Department of Environmental Quality. As part of the program, ESI will support CULP by providing technical assistance and advice on strategies to reduce water, energy usage, and waste generation.

Jenny Tinsley receiving certificate

“We are excited to be taking this next step in our commitment to environmental sustainability,” said Tommy Bruno, President of Culp Home Fashions President. “We’ve made great strides over the past few years, but we look forward to working with ESI to make further progress and gain more technical expertise.”

CULP’s company-wide environmental initiatives already include being certified as “Zero Waste to Landfill” at its Stokesdale and High Point locations, using hydropower at its facility in Canada, using solar-power at its Read Window facility in Knoxville, and converting approximately 90% of its material movement equipment from propane to electricity.

The company’s efforts to promote sustainability in product development includes ongoing work with Unifi using its Repreve® recycled yarn in various mattress and upholstery fabrics, as well as participating in Unifi’s Textile Takeback program. To date, CULP has shipped 40 pallets, or approximately 6,000 lbs., of recycled polyester yarn to Unifi’s Yadkinville plant for Textile Takeback production.

ESI Certificate DEQ – Partner in Environmental Stewardship Initiative

“The ESI advisory team, along with a group from Waste Reduction Partners, recently completed an on-site visit at our Stokesdale plant to perform waste, water, and energy audits. They will be guiding us on specific projects to consider and opportunities for future initiatives,” explained Bruno. “With regards to our sustainability efforts, we are focusing on improvements that are realistically achievable while also maintaining an appropriate cost structure for our company and our customers. Participating in the ESI program is free, and the level of expertise and guidance we are receiving is top notch. If we can find ways to reduce our water and energy consumption while also reducing or maintaining our operational costs, then that is a win for the environment, a win for CULP, and a win for our customers,” added Bruno.

Indorama Ventures Reports Stable Quarterly Earnings; Management Focused On Bolstering Performance In Challenging Environment

BANGKOK, Thailand — November 14, 2023 — Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL), a global sustainable chemical producer, today reported stable third-quarter earnings as the company’s management focuses on conserving cash and improving competitiveness to bolster performance in a continued period of weakness in the global chemical industry.

Indorama Ventures achieved EBITDA of $324 million in 3Q23, an increase of 1% QoQ and a decline of 37% YoY, impacted by a weak economic environment, geopolitical tensions, and continued post-pandemic disruptions in global markets. Sales volumes dropped 5% from a year ago to 3.6 million tons as China recovers from the pandemic more slowly than expected and an extended period of destocking in the manufacturing and chemical sectors continues to normalize from unprecedented levels last year.

Management continues to focus on conserving cash, realizing efficiency improvements, and optimizing the company’s operational footprint to boost profitability. These efforts resulted in positive operating cash flow of US$410 million in the quarter, positive free cash flow of $79 million year to date, and room for further reductions in working capital going forward. The company’s AA- rating was maintained by TRIS in the quarter, with a stable outlook.

The company expects the operating environment to improve in 2024 as customer destocking continues to ease across all three of Indorama Ventures’ segments. The ramp up of PET and fibers expansion projects operations in India and the U.S. will also contribute to increased volumes.

Combined PET posted EBITDA of $146 million, a 25% decline QoQ, amid historically low benchmark PET margins, increased feedstock prices in Western markets, and lingering effects of destocking. Integrated Oxides and Derivatives (IOD) segment posted a 27% rise in EBITDA to $119 million QoQ, supported by strong MTBE margins in the Integrated Intermediates business.

The Integrated Downstream portfolio’s profitability was impacted by destocking, inflationary pressures, and margin pressure from imports. Fibers segment achieved a 140% increase in EBITDA to $48 million QoQ as Lifestyle volumes grew in key markets in Asia, and the Mobility and Hygiene verticals benefited from management’s focus on optimizing operations and refocusing the organization.

Mr. DK Agarwal, Deputy Group CEO of Indorama Ventures

Mr. DK Agarwal, Deputy Group CEO of Indorama Ventures, said, “I am pleased to report that we are making meaningful progress on the management actions that I mentioned in the last quarter. In the short term, these are resulting in positive free cash flow generation, while in medium term we continue to defend aggressively our first-quartile cost position to emerge with enhanced profitability post the return to normalization in 2024 from the challenging operating environment that the industry faces.

I must admit it is surprising that global inventory levels have yet to reach optimum levels, including our own, as the value chains in our segments de-leverage against higher operating costs, especially in Europe and in general from steep interest costs that we feel may stay at peak levels for longer. We are adjusting our global footprint to meet the anticipated supply/demand environment and trade flows to ensure we continue to provide our customers with competitive and reliable offerings and are aligned in providing best-in-class sustainable solutions.”

Integris Composites Launches Customizable Ballistic Shields And Vests At Milipol Paris

PARIS — November 13, 2023 — Integris Composites, the global supplier of armor protection for the world’s elite military and law-enforcement units, will display its new “make your own shield” concept and soft body armor vests at Milipol Paris 2023 Stand 5 F009, taking place Nov. 14–17 at the Paris-Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre.

“We are presenting two innovations,” said Jan Grimberg, the senior vice president of marketing and sales EMEA at Integris, “a new product line of body armor vests with our Rapid Don/Doff system that is an industry first and a new line of customizable ballistic shields.”

Integris Composites Facility in France

Integris, the new name for TenCate Advanced Armour, is continuing the company’s quarter-century emphasis on safety, reliability and survivability.

Make Your Own Shield Concept

The new shield line is designed to respond to law enforcement and military organizations, which frequently want designs tailored to their procedures.

“Bespoke solutions are nothing new for Integris Composites, but in the past, small-quantity, custom shield orders had to contend with the entire industry’s inherent need to tailor-make molds for every version—cost prohibitive for small orders,” said James Williamson, Integris Composite’s sales manager for France, Spain and Portugal.

The addition of new equipment in the past year enables Integris to make shields that are specific to a customer’s needs for shape, size and weight, but with a significantly shorter lead time and at a price like that of larger series. “Our new manufacturing capability reduces the nonrecurring costs (NRC) of molds. This makes one, two or a few handheld portable shields completely feasible,” explained Williamson.

A Dream Capability

“This is a dream capability. Now, as a customer, you have a choice. You can buy something off the shelf from our catalog. Or you can buy a customized solution that’s a lot more affordable than it was in the past,” said Williamson.

Custom products are especially appealing to law enforcement and military since many units require specifications in size, weight and shape to allow active members to perform their duties with a focus on safety and durability. “They don’t have to buy a million euros worth of product to get exactly what they want. They do not have to buy thousands of units to get exactly what they want. They can get exactly what they want when ordering a few units,” added Williamson.

Testing New Rapid Don/Doff Vests

Throughout the show, Integris invites active members of law enforcement and the military to try on Rapid Don/Doff armor vests, which are making their public debut here.

Inspecting Armor Plate at Integris Composites

These vests use a magnetic buckle system. “They can take it off, put it on in two seconds without losing their settings,” said Stephen Jackson, regional director of Turkey, the Middle East and Africa. “This enhances safety, comfort and predictability.”

Special Pride

“There is a special pride in participating in Milipol,” said Grimberg. “We are a truly international company. With 25 percent of our workforce in France, we are proud to have the opportunity to display these two innovations in Paris under the banner of a new name,” said Grimberg.

Integris is an engineering company and the manufacturer of composite armor for land vehicles, aircraft, naval craft, protection housing for optronics and other sensitive technology, and personal protection gear. The company’s scope includes the design, development, production, sales and services of composite armor solutions. Integris’ product portfolio consists of panels or ready-to-install kits made from high-strength materials like HDPE, aramids and ceramics. For more information go to: www.integriscomposites.com.

Integris Composites Launching Shields at Milipol

Milipol Paris 2023 is the leading event dedicated to homeland security and safety, with over 30,000 visitors and 1,000 exhibitors. It is presented every two years under the auspices of the French Ministry of the Interior in partnership with several governmental bodies. For more information go to: www.milipol.com.
