Oerlikon Textile Components’ Texparts® PK SE Series Features Flexible Pendulum Arm

Fellbach, February 2010, – Oerlikon Textile Components with the product line Texparts has again set
the pace with the most sophisticated and flexible pendulum arm available on the market. The concept
for the new series was easy. From all only the best combined with technology competence, innovative
assembly methods and absolute perfection. This, among others, ensures the premium quality of
Texparts® Drafting Systems.

Drafting systems have an essential influence on the yarn quality. Parameters like mass
variation, thin/ thick places, neps and hairiness as well as no. of ends down can be improved. The
installation of Texparts® Drafting Systems results directly in the reduction of labor and
production costs, as well as better running properties in subsequent processes and enhanced fabric
characteristics.

Product benefits

The six outstanding patented features of the new Texparts® PK SE Series – SE is a synonym for
single element – have a direct impact on your spinning mill. Your advantages of the SE Series can
be described as follows: effortlessness in setting, drafting, fitting, adapting, handling and
indicating.

Texparts® EasyDraft

Within the feature EasyDraft five sub-functions are integrated. Absolute independent working
single elements for flexible settings of draft field distances. This allows an easy and variable
adaptation to fiber properties and spinning requirements. A constant yarn quality and improved
process reliability are guaranteed due to the low load variations between the individual pendulum
arms. Because of the single elements used, only one element has to be replaced in case of damage.
This allows the reduction of your stock and prevents mix-up.

Texparts® EasyDraft stands also for the possibility of an easy and quick conversion from a 3
roller to a 4 roller drafting system.

The easy and secure adjustment of the single elements guarantees low load variations between
the pendulum arms. The parallel positioning of top and bottom rollers ensure very close nip points
with included save guidance and anti-twist function as well as load indication.

The assuring facts for more flexibility are the five possible load steps with maximum load of
20 daN per element. Higher load empowers your spinning mill to already meet future technological
demands. In addition the possibility of higher loads includes a reserve for difficult to be drafted
fiber materials like e.g. highly twisted roving.

To fulfill the various requirements of the fiber material to be processed, the variable load
adaption enables high technological flexibility, gentle treatment of cots and aprons, reduced wear
of bottom roller bearings and reduced gear load.

The new top apron cradle concept with an individual apron tensioning system stands for
low-friction and smooth apron running which will be enabled by the special surface structure and
ideal combination of materials. Besides this the precise parallel positioning of top apron cradle
and top roller is assured.

A long working life of the aprons is given by a low drive torque. But in case of a top apron
exchange the simple concept enables time savings of up to 40%, due to the option of a replacement
without the removal of the entire apron unit.

Supplementary the concept ensures lowest possible stress on fibers during drafting plus
gentle fiber guidance because of very close apron nip points.

Texparts® EasySet

This feature stands for an exact, time-saving, maintenance free, quick and very accurate
height setting function of each pendulum arm. The precise and uniform settings allow for less
variation of yarn quality from spinning position to spinning position.

Texparts® EasyFit

This feature stands for a secure fixing of the pendulum arm on the support rod. It ensures a
simple mounting on the support rod without any damages.

Texparts® EasyAdapt

The easy and flexible adaptation of additional components is ensured. Due to this flexible
system you are already prepared for future requirements and add-ons. A basic version with a holder
for standard clearer rollers is available as well as an adapter cap for the fastening of other
components like for core yarn spinning.

Texparts® EasyHandle

The eased handling is guaranteed by a new covered lever construction with antirust function.
Little force is needed to open and close the pendulum arm. Because of reduced strain while
handling, the stress on functional elements will be lowered. This ensures a longer service life of
the pendulum arm.

Texparts® EasyIndicate

The visual load indication is more than just a visual support for checking purposes of the
alignments. It ensures a tactile setting of the load as well as the save latching into the required
position.

New Fiber Testing Device Gives Cotton An Edge

March 9, 2010, Australia — A ‘fibre maturity’ testing device designed to improve the quality of
fibre produced by Australian cotton growers and yarn quality in overseas spinning mills has been
licensed to new-start Australian company, Cottonscope Pty Ltd.

Developed by CSIRO’s Cotton Research Unit – with support from the Cotton Research Development
Corporation (CRDC) and the Cotton Catchment Communities CRC – the ‘Cottonscope’ instrument
automatically measures cotton maturity, directly and accurately, in around 25 seconds.

“A fast, accurate and direct measurement of cotton fibre maturity has been sought by the
industry for decades,” says the Unit’s Leader, Dr Stuart Gordon. The ‘Cottonscope’ instrument
automatically measures cotton maturity, directly and accurately, in around 25 seconds.

“In 2001, a CSIRO team took up the challenge to create and test a new prototype instrument
for the industry. The team built several prototypes and put them through some rigorous trials to
verify consistency of performance and results.”

Those trials were followed by ‘real-life’ tests in which the instrument’s results were used
to measure when a crop was mature enough for harvest, thereby allowing for predictions of the
‘textile consequences’ of immature fibre on neps and dye uptake in fabric generated from in-field
and ginning practices. (Neps are small fibre knots associated with immature fibre that cause cotton
yarn and fabric quality to be downgraded.)

“Cottonscope will also be valuable in the spinning mill where it will enable more accurate
prediction of nep creation, dye uptake and overall quality control when cotton bales are laid down
for processing at the mill,” Dr Gordon says.

“Of further benefit is the instrument’s ability to monitor the maturity and fineness of
various cotton breeds to assist in the selection of better cotton varieties for the production of
high quality fabric.”

BSC Electronics Pty Ltd in Western Australia has established Cottonscope Pty Ltd to produce
and market the instrument in Australia and overseas.

In late March this year, BSC Engineering Director, Mark Brims, will join Dr Gordon in
presenting Cottonscope to the International Committee for Cotton Test Methods at the 30th
International Cotton Conference in Bremen, Germany.

Obama’s Trade Agenda Sent To Congress

The U.S. Trade Representative has sent Congress President Barack Obama’s 2010 trade agenda, which
calls for a number of efforts to expand exports and stronger enforcement of U.S. trade rights. The
heart of the agenda is President Obama’s goal of doubling exports over the next five years and
creating two million jobs.

The report does not call for any legislation by Congress other than approval of the pending
free trade agreements with Panama, Colombia and South Korea and extension of the General System of
Trade Preferences. It does not address any problems with imports other than to say the United
States will work to fully enforce its trade rights, and it will take cases to the World Trade
Organization when it believes those rights are being violated.

Pointing out that 95 percent of the world’s consumers live outside of the United States, Kirk
said the president’s trade agenda will help get U.S. workers and businesses access to as many of
those customers as is possible. “The priorities of this agenda can work to strengthen the
rules-based global trading system on which the nations of the world depend, while opening markets
and ensuring that American businesses and workers receive the economic benefits of trade,” Kirk
said.

The report calls for the United States to continue its support and leadership in connection
with the Doha Round of trade liberalization negotiations, which it says would create jobs here at
home while helping less developed nations enjoy the economic benefits of trade.

The report says the Obama administration will “increase its focus on attacking non-tariff
barriers to trade” and promises that the United States will “fully enforce” labor and environmental
rights in trade agreements.

In conclusion, the far-ranging report says, “A trade policy focused on the opportunities for
increasing American exports and jobs, on opening markets and boosting innovation and based on the
principles of a rules-based trading system can contribute powerfully to the President’s economic
agenda for America.”

TenCate Reports Global Tecasafe™ Plus FR Fabric Sales Total More Than 1 Million Yards

Union City, Ga.-based TenCate Protective Fabrics North America reports it has achieved global sales
of more than 1 million yards of its flame-resistant (FR) Tecasafe™ Plus fabric in the two years
since the fabric was introduced in North America. The fabric originally was engineered in Europe
and later was modified to meet the specific requirements of the North American market.

According to the company, the fabric has sold well because it offers comfort and durability
as well as flame resistance at an affordable price. “Before we introduced TenCate Tecasafe Plus in
North America, there were no real options that provided all these features without compromise,”
said Elliad Granger, marketing manager, TenCate Protective Fabrics. “The speedy adoption of this
product and the one million yard milestone are testaments to this fact.” Granger said the fabric,
available in a broad range of colors, also offers excellent electric arc and flash fire protection.

“Tecasafe Plus has been the most successful new fabric adoption we have ever seen in our
business,” said Stan Jewell, vice president of Nashville, Tenn.-based Bulwark Protective Apparel, a

Toho Tenax Introduces New Carbon Fiber Prepreg Fabric

Japan-based Toho Tenax Co. Ltd., a manufacturer of carbon fibers and a Teijin Group company, has
developed a thinner, lighter-weight carbon fabric suitable for forming prepregs for composite use.
A thinner prepreg fabric allows a thicker prepreg layer to be used for the composite, which can
increase the rigidity of the composite while lowering the overall weight.

The fabric features a newly-developed carbon fiber yarn engineered specifically for
ultra-thin fabrics. At 60 grams per square meter, the fabric weighs less than half as much as a
conventional light carbon fiber fabric, according to Toho Tenax.

The fabric also owes its thin 0.6-millimeter profile to yarn-spreading technology provided by
Toho Tenax’s development partner Japan-based Sakai Ovex Co. Ltd.

The product is suitable for such high-strength, low-weight end-use applications as personal
computer casings as well as golf club and tennis racquet shafts, according to the company.

Toho Tenax plans to expand its carbon fiber business in the prepreg area, with the goal of
selling more than 300,000 square meters of fabric valued at more than $1.8 billion by March 2013.

ACIMIT Reports Increased Textile Machinery Orders In 2009

The Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers (ACIMIT), Milan, has reported that
Italian textile machinery orders for the second half of 2009 increased 36 percent compared to the
same period in 2008. ACIMIT said that although it’s too early to interpret this turnaround as a
sign that the economic crisis is ending, the overall recovery for both domestic and foreign markets
indicates a global move from the minimum threshold reached during the second half of 2008.

“There has been a very strong reaction by our businesses to the persistent and generalized
downturn in demand,” said Sandro Salmoiraghi, president, ACIMIT. “However, this has engendered a
further reduction in already slim margins.”

ACIMIT reports that domestically, new orders in the second half of 2009 increased 21 percent
compared to the second half of 2008; and in foreign markets, new orders increased 45 percent. The
organization notes that initiatives adopted by governments to support the textile industry have in
general revived the local textile sectors. In China and India — the two main markets for Italian
textile machinery — there has been a slight increase in new investments, as shown by orders taken
by Italian machinery manufacturers.
