HanesBrands Has Five Additional Manufacturing Plants Achieve U.S. EPA Recognition for Energy Efficiency Gains

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — March 24, 2016 — HanesBrands (HBI) announced today that five additional company manufacturing plants have earned U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Energy Star Challenge for Industry awards by reducing energy use by an average 18 percent.

To date, 23 of the company’s manufacturing facilities have earned the honor, helping the company reduce energy use as well as the corresponding greenhouse gas emissions that result from energy use. To earn Challenge for Industry status, manufacturing plants must reduce their energy use by 10 percent within a five-year period.

Located in the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Thailand and Vietnam, the latest five company plants to achieve Challenge honors have benefited from a coordinated companywide energy management initiative and employee-driven energy-saving ideas, as well as investments in technological improvements, including advanced heat recovery, air conditioning and compressed air systems.

“The employees at all five plants should be commended for their success in reducing energy use and protecting the environment,” the EPA’s Jean Lupinacci, director of the Energy Star commercial and industrial branch, wrote in award letters to each of the plants.

Unlike most apparel marketers, Hanes owns the substantial majority of its manufacturing supply chain and can make a significant contribution to responsible environmental practices. Since 2007, the company has reduced its energy use by 23 percent, its carbon emissions by 25 percent and its water use by 31 percent. More than a quarter of the company’s worldwide energy use comes from renewable sources such as hydro, geothermal and biomass.

“Sound environmental practices make good business sense, although achievement requires significant planning and effort,” said Kurt Schwalbe, Hanes director of engineering and energy management. “We are proud of our organization’s commitment to environmental practices from the executive suite to the plant floor. That’s why we are the only apparel company to be a multiyear sustained excellence award winner from EPA Energy Star.”

EVS Wins Order For IQ-TEX4 Systems For Denim Application

CAESAREA, Israel — March 24, 2016 — Elbit Vision Systems Ltd. (EVS), a provider of camera-based automatic vision inspection systems for textile fabrics and technical webs, announced that it received an order in excess of $400,000. The solution combines two complementary technologies developed by EVS, which solves the problem of inspecting Denim, a material which poses many difficulties for human inspection.

Arkema To Present “Performance  Materials For Additive Manufacturing” At AMUG Conference & Expo In April

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. — March 24, 2016 — Arkema will exhibit and present at the Additive Manufacturers User Group (AMUG) Conference in St. Louis in April 2016. The presentation, entitled “High Performance Materials for Additive Manufacturing,” will focus on Arkema’s innovative material technologies for additive manufacturing applications, including Kynar® polyvinylidene fluoride, Plexiglas® acrylics, Rilsan® and Orgasol® polyamides, Kepstan® polyether-ketoneketones, and Sartomer radiation curable resins.

Arkema’s involvement in Additive Manufacturing has evolved over time with the emergence of laser sintering, specifically with Rilsan Polyamide 11 powder, and has progressed to new products, including the Invent™ line of polyamide laser sintering powders, high performance Kepstan PEKK materials for laser sintering, and a full line of photo-curable resins  from Arkema’s Sartomer division. Arkema Supports Materials Science Lab At Penn State

Arkema has joined with Penn State’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences’ Department of Materials Science and Engineering by contributing $50,000 to a new Arkema Additive Manufacturing Laboratory in the Department’s Steidle Building, which is currently under renovation, with completion scheduled for June 2016.

“We have a commitment to developing high-performance, innovative materials, and we are pleased to collaborate with Penn State on this new, state-of-art additive manufacturing lab,” said Ryan Dirkx, Vice President of Research and Development for Arkema’s North American region.

The funding will be used to purchase new equipment and other materials for the new lab, which will enable students to explore new additive technology and integrate it into their research as they enhance their undergraduate lab courses. Arkema has consistently donated to Penn State’s Materials Science and Engineering Department over the last six years in support of graduate fellowships, the department’s graduate colloquium in materials, and undergraduate student travel expenses.

Texas Tech Researcher Seshadri Ramkumar Wins Technical Achievement Award From Industry-Leading Professional Group

LUBBOCK, Texas — March 24, 2016 — A Texas Tech University researcher has been chosen to receive a prestigious technical achievement award from TAPPI. Seshadri Ramkumar, a professor of technical textiles and countermeasures to chemical threats in Texas Tech’s Department of Environmental Toxicology and The Institute of Environmental and Human Health (TIEHH), will receive TAPPI’s NET (Nonwovens Engineers and Technologists) Division Technical Achievement Award and the Mark Hollingsworth Prize for technical advancement in the field. The TAPPI NET Division is the world’s leading professional group in the field of nonwoven technology, and the Technical Achievement Award is deemed the highest technical award for the field’s researchers.

“This award has been possible because Texas Tech realized the importance of research in the new field of nonwovens way back in 1999 and supported my effort through the Admiral Zumwalt Program, which helped with the creation of FiberTect decontamination wipe technology,” Ramkumar said. “The research program showcases strong and continuing collaboration between Texas Tech, Reese Center and industry groups such as Plains Cotton Growers, Inc. I am thankful to Texas Tech for providing a supportive research environment that is absolutely needed for any research program to succeed.”

Ramkumar’s award will be presented at a May 17 awards dinner during the 2016 NET INC (Innovative Nonwovens Conference) in Cincinnati, Ohio.

“I have known Ram for nearly a decade and am proud to be involved in presenting this well-deserved award to him,” said Larry N. Positive Industry Sentiment Emerges From Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics As Number Of Visitors Increases

SHANGHAI — March 24, 2016 — The economy was on everyone’s minds last week as the latest Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics – Spring Edition took place against a backdrop of uncertainty in the global textile industry. And while some in the industry are feeling the impact of China’s slowdown, many international exhibitors at the fair reported little or no impact from the economic situation. “We expected sentiment to be down somewhat this year, but we were pleasantly surprised by the relative optimism from exhibitors and buyers by the end of the fair,” said Wendy Wen, senior general manager, Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd. explained on the final show day. “It is reasonable to say the industry in China is going through a period of change but it is far from in decline, with the development and growth of this fair over the last year a strong indicator of this. We need to keep things in perspective as well: with overall growth remaining above 6 percent for the foreseeable future, this will still present many opportunities for overseas suppliers in China.”

As further proof that the industry is more resilient than assumed, particularly in China, the visitor figure rose once again, the third consecutive increase since the Spring Edition’s move to Shanghai in 2014. The new record set was over 71,000 buyers (which includes buyers from the concurrent Yarn Expo, CHIC and PH Value fairs who also entered the Intertextile Shanghai halls), a roughly 13 percent increase compared to 2015 (62,649). “We weren’t expecting such strong growth in the buyer figure this year given the macroeconomic climate, however the more than 500 extra exhibitors (total: 3,155 from 27 countries and regions) would have played a part in the increase,” Ms Wen continued.

Exhibitors and buyers express confidence about future

Across various product categories, exhibitors in the International Hall were cautious yet positive about the Chinese and wider textile industry in the coming year. Explaining that their regular buyers had already placed orders and they had received many new enquiries as well, Jose Maria Loren from Spain-based Luca Cuccolini, an accessories supplier, commented: “We don’t think the economy will affect us much. This exhibition is good to attract buyers not just from China, but also Asia, so it helps us to sell our products throughout the region.” French company Malhia Kent were also optimistic about the future. “The high end of the market will always be resilient here; it’s slowed down recently but it’s not getting worse,” said Aris Arakelian, commercial manager. “We received one big order and a few others on the first day of the fair, and our turnover in China has been very good.”

Buyers reiterated the sentiment of exhibitors. “Mid- to high-range apparel market is the main core of our business and is largely unaffected by the economy,” said Yuan Hui, a sourcing representative for Chinese apparel brand 15 Hours. Hui also appreciated the organization of the exhibitors in country and product groupings that allowed him to easily source his target fabrics. “The fair gives me a comprehensive range of products for selection, so despite the size, I can find exactly what I’m looking for.”

DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products And BioAmber Launch New Sampling Program At UTECH NA

WILMINGTON, Del., and MONTREAL — March 24, 2016 — Megatrends such as resource consumption, environmental issues, and population growth across the globe have created a demand for environmentally friendly bio-based solutions. However, the time it takes to develop a bio-based solution can be time consuming for manufacturers as the base structure of the urethane has to be altered at the molecular level.
