TRSA 9th Annual Legislative Conference Hosts Capitol Hill Speakers, Presents Industry Issues To Lawmakers

WASHINGTON — April 2, 2019 — This year’s TRSA 9th Annual Legislative Conference coincided with the very first blooms of cherry blossoms in Washington on March 27-28. The ninth year of this event began with a keynote speech by Chris Stirewalt, the politics editor for Fox News Channel and host of the Fox News Halftime Report. Stirewalt discussed the recent release of the Mueller Report and the impact its findings will have on strategy for both the Democratic and Republican parties moving forward. He also took several questions from the crowd. In closing, Stirewalt shared his opinion that partisan politics is here to stay.

The same afternoon, attendees were also briefed by Kevin Schwalb, TRSA’s vice president of government relations, on key issues to discuss with legislators in the following day’s Hill meetings, such as TRSA’s support for infrastructure improvement and adoption of the U.S. Department of Labor’s update of overtime rules. The day wrapped up with prime networking opportunities: the TRSAPAC Reception and a celebration of TRSA members’ exemplary business practices as a total of 25 awards were presented during the Annual Leadership Awards Dinner at the Dupont Circle Hotel. There were multiple winners in each of the eight competitions with an overall winner topping each. Interest in the TRSA competition was higher than ever as dozens of entries were received and judged by TRSA committees and subject-matter experts.

The second day of the conference provided TRSA members with an insider’s view of Washington politics and policy during three speaking engagements with Capitol Hill lawmakers Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), chair of the Homeland Security Committee and Todd Young (R-Ind.), a 10-year Marine veteran and U.S. Naval Academy graduate elected to the Senate in 2016. The two senators spoke on Capitol Hill before the TRSA members set off for congressional offices to discuss issues, including the above-mentioned need for infrastructure improvements and approval of the Department of Labor’s proposed changes in overtime eligibility. U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), was the third speaker of the day, and he addressed the TRSA attendees at a luncheon meeting following their Hill visits. As chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), Rep. Luján helped engineer last year’s Democratic takeover of majority status in the U.S. House of Representatives.

More than fifty TRSA members visited a grand total of 77 offices of both Democratic and Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill to discuss issues impacting the linen, uniform and facility services industry. Each attendee was armed with several folders to leave behind with TRSA’s stance on the following issues:

  • The U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Overtime Regulation Proposal
  • Infrastructure Improvements and/or Highway/Road Investment

OEKO-TEX® Test Criteria 2019 — New Regulations Finally Entered Into Force On April 1

ZÜRICH, Switzerland — April 2, 2019 — Consumer protection and sustainability along the textile value chain have always been fundamental issues for the OEKO-TEX® Association. For this reason, the existing guidelines of the Oeko-Tex product portfolio are updated at the beginning of each year, so that the latest scientific findings and industry trends are adapted. After the transitional period, the new Oeko-Tex regulations for all certification systems and services finally entered into force on April 1, 2019. An overview of the new regulations can be found here. The latest changes relate to the ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX® standard.

ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX®

The basis for sustainable production of textiles and leather goods is the use of environmentally friendly chemicals. The Eco Passport by Oeko-Tex certification is expressly aimed at the avoidance of unwanted chemicals, even before they enter the global supply chain. For this, numerous chemicals, including dyes, boiling agents, adhesives, inks, pigments and accessories, are analysed in a confidential, three-stage process, which confirms that the formulation and individual ingredients fulfill specific criteria with respect to sustainability, security and compliance with legal provisions.

An overview of the changes:

Inclusion of leather chemicals

Following the introduction of the LEATHER STANDARD by OEKO-TEX® for leather products that have been tested for harmful substances, as well as the Sustainable Textile & Leather Production certification (STeP) for environmentally friendly and sustainable leather products, in addition to textile chemicals, leather chemicals will shortly also be able to be tested and certified according to the Eco Passport by Oeko-Tex standard.

New substances in the limit value catalogues

Various substances have been newly added to the limit value catalogues. In addition to quinoline, which was already subject to monitoring by Oeko-Tex, these include the softener and viscosity regulator TCEP (Tris(2-chlorethyl) phosphate), the propellant ADCA (diazene-1,2-dicarboxamide) and the siloxanes D4, D5 and D6. Newly included in Annex 6, are the arylamines 4-chloro-o-toluidinium chloride, CAS No. 3165-93-3, 2-naphthylammoniumacetate, CAS No. 553-00-4, 2,4-diaminoanisole sulphate, CAS No. 39156-41-7, 2,4,5-trimethylaniline hydrochloride, CAS No. 21436-97-5 and the flame retardant, disodium octaborate, CAS No. 12008-41-2.

New additions to the limit value catalogues

In Annex 4 of the Eco Passport by Oeko-Tex limit values were also tightened up for various parameters. This particularly relates to the starting point for the production of dyes, aniline, the solvent, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAC), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), the flame retardants, penta-, hexa- and heptabromodiphenyl ether, various fire retardants and per- and polyfluorinated compounds (PFCs). There were also changes in the limit value catalogue for the substances, OPP, CMK, TCMTB, for leather chemicals.

Additional important changes in the OEKO-TEX® product portfolio:

OEKO-TEX® already complies with the new “REACH Annex XVII CMR Legislation”

Through the limit value requirements of benzene, amine salts, as well as quinoline in STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® and Leather Standard by Oeko-Tex, these now already cover the requirements of the new “REACH Annex XVII CMR Legislation” (Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/1513).

Glyphosate under observation

From 2019, two new product groups will be monitored in Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex and Leather Standard by Oeko-Tex: glyphosate and its salts, as well as the carcinogenic N-nitrosamines and N-nitrosatable substances.

High-Quality Towels Manufacturer Loftex Sets New Standard In Sustainability Utilizing CertainT

NEW YORK CITY — April 2, 2019 — Loftex, a manufacturer of high-quality towels, today announced that the first retail introduction of their bath towels including recycled PET (rPET) source-verified by the CertainT® platform are now available at US retail this month. The CertainT tagging and tracing platform is provided by Applied DNA Sciences Inc., a leader in PCR-based DNA manufacturing for product authenticity and traceability. Loftex introduced the eco-friendly towel, partially comprised of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) materials as part of their commitment to sustainability both in their factory and their product.

What started with e-commerce venues, now will hit retail floors across the country in the second calendar quarter of 2019. Loftex markets and sells bath and beach towels with CertainT source verification for rPET through an exclusive licensing agreement with Applied DNA. Additional products utilizing CertainT source-verification for rPET will continue to be introduced in towels and other home products this year.

The Loftex cotton-polyester blend terry towels feature polyester derived from 100-percent post-consumer recycled polyester, rPET. The recycled polyester fibers are blended with cotton so the towel has the best of both fibers. The blend provides superior absorbency, dries quickly in the dryer and on the towel rod, is resistant to odor and mildew, and stays soft wash after wash. By using Applied DNA’s CertainT platform, the recycled nature of the rPET component of the towel can be verified by detecting an indelible molecular tag, thus ensuring rPET authenticity and origin in the finished product.

Charles Gaenslen, CEO of Loftex Home, said: “Loftex consistently strives to find better, more efficient and more intelligent ways to do things. Our new towels embody this mission, and the use of Applied DNA’s CertainT platform reinforces our commitment to use the most technologically advanced methods to ensure our products are true to their sustainable claims.”

Dr. James A. Hayward, CEO of Applied DNA, said: “We are committed to differentiating leading companies, like Loftex, by giving their customers a premier authentication system reinforced by CertainT.”

Ericsson And Comau Show 5G Digital Twin At Hannover Messe

HANNOVER, Germany— April 2, 2019 — Ericsson and Comau show the Digital Twin enabled by the 5G connectivity to the Hannover Messe. This innovation project, which is currently being tested, represents a further step in the long-lasting partnership between Ericsson and Comau aimed at developing new use cases and solutions for Industry 4.0 and Smart Manufacturing, thanks to the potential offered by the fifth-generation mobile technology.

Comau and Ericsson show the digitized version of an assembly line in an automotive plant. Using special glasses for Virtual Reality applications, visitors are immersed in the line and can “move” within it, monitoring the key parameters of the processes and of the machines, such as vibrations, temperature, pressures and absorptions. A Virtual Reality digital dashboard, which can be used with a standard tablet, will identify situations that could create slowdowns or interruptions in the process by providing instructions to tackle the problem effectively.

The features of 5G connectivity allow to collect a stable, continuous and massive flow of data in real-time that is vital for automation processes. Thanks to 5G low latency, the Digital Twin shows information related to the real robot in the form of visual outputs, which make it possible to understand how the robot activity will evolve in the cell. Not only: from the data analysis it is possible to foresee faults and malfunctions and identify which component must be repaired or replaced, suggesting which actions to take to operate effectively. 5G becomes the enabling technology for every analytics and digital intelligence remote activity on all assets of the production system.

The pilot project presented in Hannover is the result of continuous development, combined with the commitment to research and innovation, by Comau and Ericsson, to enable the digital transformation process in manufacturing.

New Hot Swap Program From Kamber Reduces Machine Downtime For Textile Manufacturers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — March 29, 2019 — Kamber Narrow Fabric Machinery LLC — a global trader and specialist in preowned weaving, braiding and knitting machinery — has announced a new Hot Swap program for manufacturers.

The program offers manufacturers the opportunity to have their narrow fabric needle looms completely refurbished with a full one-year warranty and with zero minutes of downtime with their current machines. Based on the auto industry’s car loaner program which is when a car dealer provides a customer with a temporary car while their own car is being repaired, Kamber will custom build a machine per the customer’s specs and then swap it with the machine needing refurbishment. Each machine needing refurbishment can be rebuilt to the customer’s same or new specs.

The Hot Swap program was developed with today’s tight labor market in mind, to help manufacturers’ employees focus on production and not on equipment repairs and rebuilding. Kamber uses OEM parts, which is crucial for machine performance. With no machine interruption and a like-new, cost-efficient machine, Hot Swap is an optimal program for production managers seeking to eliminate machine downtime and increase productivity.

Visit Kamber Narrow Machinery’s website www.kambernet.com for a quick video showing the entire rebuilding process.
