Pacific Continental Textiles Lands Defense Logistics Agency Contract To Provide Flight Deck Jerseys

LOS ANGELES — July 8, 2019 — It’s no secret that a lot of America’s manufacturing has gone overseas. This couldn’t be more exemplified than with the textile industry’s move toward countries such as China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and India. This massive shift has left many factories across the U.S. closed. Pacific Continental Textiles Inc. isn’t one of them. In fact, they’ve been manufacturing apparel and textiles for the commercial sector for 37 years. Now, with a recent contract from the Defense Logistics Agency, they’ve just added the federal government as their newest customer.

“Apparel and footwear is virtually gone in terms of United States production,” said Lou Spagna, the chief marketing officer of Pacific Continental Textiles. About a year ago, the company made the decision to enter the federal marketplace. One of the biggest allures for the company to pursue government contracts was The Berry Amendment.

The policy, which has been in play since 1941, basically means that the Department of Defense is required to procure its food, clothing, fabric, fibers, yarns, hand tools, and measuring tools from American businesses. With the reduced competition in the American textile industry as well as the incentive of the DoD, Pacific Continental Textiles jumped on the opportunity. The next step was developing a strategy to actually land a contract.

“We attended the DLA Joint Advanced Planning Brief for Industry meeting in Philadelphia last November, learned a lot about the federal contracting and made many contacts,” said Spagna. The approach that PCT would take toward the federal market would be to learn the process, match PCT’s capabilities with appropriate government needs and add a personal touch. Lou’s approach is that no matter the industry, you must always know your customer’s needs, their unmet needs, and how you can solve those problems for them. His goal was to also help contracting officers match a face to the name of PCT. About a year after getting registered in SAM through US Federal Contractor Registration, they landed their first contract.

“To get an award on your second attempt, I’m pretty proud of that,” said Spagna. On its second bid, PCT landed a contract to provide flight deck jerseys to DLA. For those unfamiliar, a flight deck jersey is a garment worn by crew members on the flight decks of aircraft carriers. One can think of them as long-sleeved turtlenecks that are also flame retardant.

“With USFCR’s help, it made our learning curve much less steep as it could have been if we had to do it by ourselves,” added Lou. On top of getting their SAM registration taken care of by USFCR, PCT also listened in on classes taught by Executive Bid Trainer John Wayne and searched for contracts with the Advanced Procurement Portal. As for their future in federal contracting, the company plans to work to secure small to medium size contracts to develop their past performance record, and then move onto the larger opportunities.

Mayer & Cie. Reports Positive Results Of ITMA 2019

ALBSTADT, Germany — July 5, 2019 — For the circular knitting machine manufacturer Mayer & Cie. (MCT) this year’s ITMA ended with a satisfactory result. From June 20-26, 2019, the company had five machines on show at the leading industry trade fair in Barcelona. The company’s focus was on sporting uses, with one exhibit dedicated to Mayer & Cie.’s innovative ideas. Digital offerings that Mayer & Cie. put together under the name knitlink rounded off the presentation. The platform includes a web shop, remote maintenance options and recording and evaluation of machine data for the customer and is to be further expanded in the future.

“In view of the current situation of the textile machinery market the 2019 ITMA was, by and large, satisfactory,” said Benjamin Mayer, one of Mayer & Cie.’s two managing partners and the director in charge of sales. “Very positive trade fair experiences included the response to our digital offerings and the feedback about our Weftnit machine study. We were evidently already able to demonstrate at the development stage the advantages of the knitting method convincingly.”

Trade fair performance “long-term average”

Since the middle of last year the international textile machinery market has sustained a marked drop in demand for a variety of reasons of which international trade policy is but one of many. That is why many exhibitors were eagerly awaiting the ITMA trade fair. “Such a major trade fair is definitely capable of ushering in a turnaround,” Benjamin Mayer agreed. “But it doesn’t seem to have done so yet. Even so, our trade fair result is in line with the long-term average.”

In Barcelona Mayer & Cie. exhibited five machines four of which focussed on sport. The new MJ 3.2 E is an electronic single jersey machine that specializes in the production of mesh and body mapping structures, both of which are very much in demand for sports- and athleisure fashion wear.

The OVJA 1.1 EETT’s sports focus is on the manufacture of shoe upper fabrics and sports outerwear. It combines double electronics and bidirectional transfer selection and can knit an almost infinite variety of patterns, including hole structures. It can also knit multi-coloured spacer fabrics.

The OVJA 2.4 EM makes a special contribution toward optimal post-sport regeneration. This new member of the OVJA family is the most productive machine in the market for the manufacture of mattress cover fabrics.

“As expected, interest in our new machines was keen,” Benjamin Mayer said. “The machines on show in Barcelona all found buyers. For the MJ 3.2 E we even received reservations for our entire scheduled output for 2019.”

An established machine with new features is the Spinit 3.0 E, which Mayer & Cie. exhibited at its third ITMA in Barcelona. The fact that the Spinit 3.0 E now also processes polyester, is capable of a higher working speed and is linked to the knitlink digital platform makes the spinning and knitting machine an even more attractive proposition.

Weftnit – an innovation with a bright future

Mayer & Cie.’s Weftnit machine study demonstrated how a long-established knitting method can be taken forward successfully into the 21st century. In contrast to a conventional circular knitting machine that uses latch needles, the Weftnit, inspired by weft knitting, uses bearded needles. That has advantages in stitch formation, which for one is much more gentle than when latch needles are used. For another, the stitch structure is finer than that of a conventional circular knitting machine with the same gauge. In addition, Mayer & Cie. expects the bearded needle technology to increase the machine’s production speed. “Our ITMA machine was initially equipped with 1.6 rather than the planned 3.2 systems and reached a speed of 20 rpm,” said Marcus Mayer, Mayer & Cie.’s technical director. “Yet the advantages of the Weftnit were plain to see — so much so that we were repeatedly asked when the machine would be available.” The answer to this question will have been less to the potential customers’ liking: “Sound development takes time. We will probably not be presenting a production-ready Weftnit 3.2 until the 2023 ITMA.”

knitlink makes good use of digital opportunities

The long-established German firm aims to stay ahead of the competition not only by maintaining its technical lead and its innovative approach but also by putting digital opportunities to good use. The knitlink platform is tailor made to suit the needs of Mayer & Cie. customers. It allows the recording and evaluation of machine data. New service offers such as remote service and a more efficient collaboration via mixed reality glasses are also part of the package just like a web shop. Further aspects will soon be added.

“At times it seemed as if that was just what customers and business partners had been waiting for,” said Benjamin Mayer. “Interest in knitlink was really enormous.”

IRO AB Reports Strong Interest In The New ZTF Zero Twist Feeder From Companies Focused On Textile Reinforcements For Composites

STOCKHOLM — July 5, 2019 — IRO AB, a member of the Vandewiele group, reports strong interest in its ZTF Zero Twist Feeder introduced at the recent ITMA 2019 in Barcelona, Spain, particularly from companies involved in the growing market of textile reinforcements for composites.

In the weaving of fibers such as carbon, glass and aramids, as well as thermoplastic tapes for highly-engineered composite fabrics, it is essential that there is no twist in the feed, which this new machine absolutely guarantees.

“The ZTF Zero Twist Feeder keeps the tape yarns or fiber tows constantly stretched to avoid the risks of any snarls or twisting,” explained Sales and Marketing Manager Pär Hedman. “During ITMA 2019 I spoke to many companies interested in this new machine, which will be supplied in bespoke versions specific to the individual needs of each customer and the intended end-use.”

The unit can accommodate tapes in widths up to 10 millimeters and weight up to 7 kilograms, with an insertion length of up to 3.4 meters. It is equipped with a buffer arm synchronized with the rapier movement of the weaving machine to deliver the exact amount of yarn from the bobbin required for the weft insertion. A tension and sensor arm ensures constant yarn tension is maintained during the entire insertion cycle.

Designed for use with rapier machines, the ZTF can be installed on new CAN (controller area network) communication machines or retrofitted to older non-CAN machines using a specially-designed conversion kit.

IRO AB is a member of TMAS – the textile machinery association of Sweden.

“As the market leader in yarn feeding technology, IRO AB has consistently introduced new milestones in the field of yarn feeding technology for weaving machines at successive ITMA shows and this year was no exception,” says TMAS Secretary General Therese Premler-Andersson. “The ZTF Zero Twist Feeder was just one of a range of new developments introduced by the company at ITMA 2019.”
