SGS Details North American Flammability Standards For Tents And Sleeping Bags

GENEVA, Switzerland — November 5, 2020 — SGS, an inspection, verification, testing and certification service provider, has published details of the flammability standards that tents and sleeping bags must conform to in North America. This advice comes at a time of growth in the camping market as consumers look for alternatives to flying during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A recent survey by Kampgrounds of America (KOA) found that 20 percent of the people booking into their sites in 2020 were first time campers. Many people see holidaying close to home as a safer alternative to flying during the pandemic. At the same time, it allows them access to the outdoors at a time when many people are restricted to their homes. Camping also has the added advantage of being a relatively cheap holiday with a low barrier to entry – an inexpensive tent from a local store is all that is needed.

While being in the great outdoors is certainly healthy, it is not without dangers and chief among these risks is fire. To reduce the chance of injury, modern tents and sleeping bags are manufactured with flammability in mind.

Manufacturers of tents and sleeping bags operating in the markets of Canada and the United States must ensure their products are safe and conform to relevant market legislation.

In Canada, the tent is defined under Item 31.1 of Part II of Schedule I of Canada’s Hazardous Products Act as a shelter made in whole or in part of fabric or other pliable materials. A new national standard for tent flammability and labeling — CAN/CGSB-182.1-2020 — was published by the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) in April 2020. This replaces the Tent Regulation (SOR/2016-185), although currently the new standard is voluntary until amendments are made to both tent and toy regulations.

The USA does not have specific legislation covering tent flammability at the national level but several states, including California, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and New Jersey, mandate CPAI-84 — Flammability of Camping Tents. However, this standard is now outdated in terms of most modern tent materials. Instead, tent manufacturers should follow ASTM F3431-20 — Standard Specification for Determining Flammability of Materials for Recreational Camping Tents and Warning Labels for Associated Hazards. This is a revision of CPAI-84 and it follows the test methods and flammability requirements in CAN/CGSB-182.1-2020.

Manufacturers should note that California makes a distinction between small (less than ten people) and large tents. The fire marshal’s office states that the materials in a small tent must comply with the Title 19 small scale test, which does not differentiate between the materials used for flooring, walls and roof materials. For large tents, the Californian code can be interpreted as requiring compliance with NFPA 701 – applicable when the tent functions as a public assembly space.

When looking at sleeping bags, both Canada and the US use technically equivalent standards:

  • Canada: ASTM F1955-15 Standard Test Method for Flammability of Sleeping Bags; and
  • USA: CPAI-75:1976A Rate of Burn Standard for Sleeping Bags.

Around the world, tents and sleeping bags might not have specific legislation relating to tent and sleeping bag flammability but they will still come under general safety requirements. This can still mean recalls if the product is found to be dangerous. It is therefore important that tent and sleeping bag manufacturers ensure their products comply with the correct market regulations for fire safety.

Oldcastle Approves WEAV3D Composite Technology For Reinforcement Applications In Polymer Concrete Products

ATLANTA, Ga. — November 5, 2020 — Oldcastle Infrastructure, a CRH company and provider of infrastructure products, has approved WEAV3D composite lattice material for reinforcement applications in its polymer concrete and SMC composite products. Ideal for underground energy, transportation and communication applications, WEAV3D composite lattice is a completely non-metallic reinforcement material that provides high levels of durability and strength, as well as resistance to corrosion and other environmental conditions.

Initially developed for a new polymer concrete cable trench designed for 16,000-pound wheel loads, WEAV3D composite lattice was utilized in place of traditional steel wire reinforcement. The lattice is based on a thermoplastic composite material that forms an adhesive bond with polymer concrete and provides exceptional impact and tensile load resistance.

WEAV3D’s lattice reinforcement was able to provide targeted strength around the drain holes and ends of the cable trench, reducing the likelihood of damage during transportation and installation. It also eliminates the corrosion that can occur when products are cut or drilled and steel is exposed. This advanced reinforcement will be available for use in a wide range of Oldcastle’s infrastructure products.

As a leader in composite material products and technology, Oldcastle is always looking to utilize innovative materials to bring lightweight, durable and economical products to the market. “The WEAV3D lattice offers flexibility and performance in the design, handling and placement of reinforcement that cannot be matched with traditional steel reinforcing,” said Oldcastle Product Manager Chris Schultz, P.E.

“Using thermoplastic composite materials that bond with Oldcastle’s resin yields the best possible strength and mechanical properties,” said WEAV3D Founder and CEO Dr. Christopher Oberste. “Our composites are also cost competitive with steel reinforcement.”

HanesBrands Proprietary Surgical Face Mask Receives Authorization By U.S. Food and Drug Administration

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — November 5, 2020 — HanesBrands today announced that a proprietary surgical face mask developed in conjunction with North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and UNC Health has been authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use by health care professionals as personal protective equipment.

The two-ply, single-use surgical mask features a unique fabric developed by NC State’s Nonwovens Institute combined with a fit design created in collaboration with UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State biomedical engineers and UNC Health infection prevention experts.

The Hanes mask uses a duckbill shape for better breathability, a wire nose piece and foam insert to enhance a contoured fit, and placement of stretchable straps for a secure fit. UNC Health tested the masks to assure they meet FDA particulate filtration standards and OSHA respiratory protection program requirements.

“We are delighted to have this mask added to the FDA’s Emergency Use Authorization for surgical masks during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mike Abbott, HanesBrands’ director of research and development. “It is a testament to the ingenuity and collaboration of our university partners and our R&D team to quickly develop a much-needed mask that is high quality, affordable and comfortable for health care professionals.”

The FDA issued its Emergency Use Authorization for surgical masks in response to concerns relating to the insufficient supply and availability of disposable single-use surgical masks that provide a physical barrier to fluids and respiratory droplets.

The use of unique spun-bond fabric developed by the Nonwovens Institute, the world’s first accredited academic program for the field of engineered fabrics, eliminates the need for a third filtration layer for cost efficiency and filtering effectiveness. The spun-bond fabric is composed of two different polymer materials to make a single fiber that has significant strength and bulk that is as effective in filtration as current materials on the market.

“The Nonwovens Institute is proud to be a part of this collaboration to ensure that high-quality and affordable protective gear remains available to frontline health care workers during the pandemic,” said Dr. Behnam Pourdeyhimi, executive director of the Nonwovens Institute at NC State.

The Hanes mask was added to the FDA Emergency Use Authorization on Oct. 5, 2020, after meeting FDA requirements for fluid resistance (ASTM F1862), flammability performance, particulate filtration (ASTM F2100), and breathability (ASTM F2100).

UNC Health’s testing, supported by the UNC School of Medicine Center for Environmental Medicine, Asthma, and Lung Biology and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Human Studies Facility in Chapel Hill, demonstrated the masks exceeded expected performance levels and has used the masks in targeted clinical settings.

“We provided the Hanes mask to clinical areas concerned with protection during specific clinical encounters where N95 respirators are not recommended but the risk of COVID-19 exposure is perceived to be high,” said UNC Health’s Dr. Emily Sickbert-Bennett, director of infection prevention at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. “The Hanes mask made these providers feel safe and well protected. I expect we will broaden use of the Hanes mask given the degree of protection it provides.”

The company is selling the surgical masks to health care organizations for use by professionals in health care settings. Separately, the company is selling all-cotton and polyester blend face masks for consumers under its Hanes and Champion brands that are available online, in leading retail stores and in company outlet stores.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the wearing of cloth face coverings to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, especially when social distancing cannot be practiced. Emerging evidence indicates face coverings act as barriers to the dispersion of respiratory droplets when worn over the mouth and nose.

In accordance with the FDA surgical mask Emergency Use Authorization, HanesBrands’ disposable, single-use surgical masks:

  • Have not been FDA cleared or approved;
  • Have been authorized by FDA under an EUA for use in health care settings by health care personnel to provide a physical barrier to fluids and particulate materials to prevent health care personnel exposure to respiratory droplets and large particles during surgical mask shortages resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic; and
  • Are authorized only for the duration of the declaration that circumstances exist justifying the authorization of the emergency use of medical devices, including alternative products used as medical devices, during the COVID-19 outbreak, under section 564(b)(1) of the Act, 21 U.S.C. Section 360bbb-3(b)(1), unless the authorization is terminated or revoked sooner.

In accordance with the FDA face coverings Emergency Use Authorization, HanesBrands’ government cloth face coverings and consumer face masks:

  • Have not been FDA cleared or approved;
  • Have been authorized by the FDA under an EUA for use by health care professionals as personal protective equipment to help prevent the spread of infection or illness in health care settings and by the general public to help slow the spread of the virus during the COVID-19 pandemic; and
  • Are authorized only for the duration of the declaration that circumstances exist justifying the authorization of the emergency use of medical devices, including alternative products used as medical devices, during the COVID-19 outbreak, under section 564(b)(1) of the Act, 21 U.S.C. Section 360bbb-3(b)(1) unless the authorization is terminated or revoked sooner.
