Automated Solutions For Quality Satisfaction: USTER® Fabric Inspection Systems Reduce Waste And Improve Yield

USTER, Switzerland — November 11, 2020 — USTER® fabric inspection solutions cover the value chain from weaving to finishing. The ingenious design of USTER Q-BAR 2 and USTER EVS FABRIQ VISION fits every production line — delivering the right quality, while reducing waste and optimizing fabric yield.

Uster’s Think Quality approach now takes in automatic fabric inspection, bringing much-needed precision and security to demanding technical textiles applications — and to all weaving mills where quality matters. Quality standards everywhere are increasing all the time: in sectors such as the automotive industry, zero-defect levels are already mandatory. Applications such as airbags, headliners, upholstery and tire cords require flawless quality, continuously. But there are also many other textile industry segments which must fulfill the expectations of demanding customers. In today’s production environments, automated quality solutions are essential.

Automation: for trust and profitability

Uster offers two systems, ensuring that fabrics meet the quality standards required to protect fabric makers and finishers from costly claims and damaged reputations.

Both systems also add valuable extra benefits. The Uster Q-BAR 2 fabric quality monitoring system prevents waste, while the Uster EVS FABRIQ VISION fabric quality assurance system significantly improves first-quality yield for all applications. Uster Q-BAR 2 and Uster EVS FABRIQ VISION make a real impact on the business success of users — a fact confirmed in numerous installations worldwide. Across a range of different applications and businesses, these users share a common verdict: automated solutions for fabric inspection have earned their trust.

Quality and minimum waste

Uster Q-BAR 2 is attracting attention through its elegant and slim design, developed for simple installation on existing weaving machines. It represents the latest generation of on-loom monitoring and inspection systems, offering operational improvements for weavers. Positioned directly above the reed on each machine, Uster Q-BAR 2 is ideally located for earliest detection of fabric defects. This allows the operator to respond quickly to alarms and stop signals. Correcting problems immediately prevents quality issues from continuing, minimizing material waste.

Uster Q-BAR 2 categorizes and saves fabric faults, creating a ‘defect map’ for each roll, which can be recalled and reviewed later via the intuitive touchscreen. The system offers different classification possibilities and allows rolls to be categorized according to number, size and position of defects, as well as customer criteria. It also grades rolls automatically. In summary, Uster Q-BAR 2 reduces the need for post-weaving inspection for most applications.

Quality and maximum fabric yield

Fabric producers require a consistently high rate of defect detection and optimized efficiency in grading. Uster EVS FABRIQ VISION achieves this by using automated control during intermediate and final inspection — and by creating roll inspection charts. This removes the need for slow, costly and unreliable manual inspection, freeing operators to focus on higher-skilled jobs. The system’s ability to capture any visible defects allows users to optimize fabric yield.

Best results are achieved by the cut optimization software module of Uster EVS FABRIQ VISION. This optimizes fabric yield per class, according to the settings. During the inspection process, infrared ink is applied on the fabric. Defect positions are then synchronized with the cut optimization software module. Using the infrared ink marks, the inspection table stops at exactly the right position for each defect, minimizing the risk of errors.

Quality is crucial — and data essential

The increasing demand for assured quality is a significant trend, and achieving it clearly requires automation. A major benefit of automation in fabric inspection is continuity in collecting objective data. This comes with the bonus of automatic data analysis by the Uster FABRIQ EXPERT quality system, with its fully-customizable reports displayed at the on-screen dashboard. For textile mills, online monitoring of the systems, with comprehensive statistics on inspected fabrics, and machine performance, serves to optimize production and facilitate automation.

Uster FABRIQ EXPERT provides an overview of all connected Uster Q-BAR 2 systems in the mill. The main focus is to show quality information — for example the number of defects over a given time — within the relevant context, such as running status or production speed. Technical alarms are highlighted to trigger early reactions, so that problems can be solved as soon as they occur.

Furthermore, smooth interfaces allow users to connect fabric inspection data with existing ERP systems, for true data flow and advanced production automation.

Controlling fabric faults, boosting business

Together, Uster Q-BAR 2 and Uster EVS FABRIQ VISION offer effective control over fabric defects and deliveries. “Well-known producers in various industries have already secured their businesses by installing Uster solutions in their production lines,” said Ingo Kiefer, product manager, Fabric Inspection, Uster Technologies.

Defects can’t be totally avoided, so it’s vital to locate them precisely. Automated inspection solutions, from weaving up to the end of the production process, allow producers to make correct quality decisions and secure profits.

3DLOOK Introduces 3D Body Scanning Lab To Provide Unique Body Data Points To Apparel Companies

SAN MATEO, Calif. — 3DLOOK LLC, the company behind a patented mobile body scanning technology for the apparel industry, is announcing the 3D Body Scanning Lab, built to provide the most comprehensive set of unique body data points to fashion brands and retailers.

The Scanning Lab will assist the R&D and data science teams in collecting unique body measurement and shape data of more than 1 million data points per scan, which includes measurements, textures and positions. This data will be used to conduct highly specialized research on each specific body part and train their neural networks and ML algorithms for maximum accuracy. The 3D Body Scanning Lab will help create custom body measurement solutions that generate accurate size and fit recommendations of apparel, and allow 3DLOOK to focus on new segments, like the intimates sector or swimwear.

How does it work?

3D Body Scanning Lab utilizes infrared depth sensors to make a precise digital copy of the human body and extracts 100+ data points, which are then used to train the neural networks and improve the algorithm behind 3DLOOK’s body measurement solutions to minimize discrepancy while contactlessly measuring customers.

“This is a huge step in empowering apparel companies in different verticals with size and fit recommendations,” said Alex Arapov, cofounder and CPO, 3DLOOK. “For example, 3D Body Scanning Lab allows us to improve our technology for subsequent implementation of such solutions as bra size recommendations to end-consumers. All we need is two snaps on any smartphone and any background. The Scanning Lab allows us to ‘see through clothes’ and optimize the algorithm: our suite of solutions processes the photos of a fully dressed customer to assess the pressure of bras on a body, and then adjusts fit recommendations accordingly.”

Exhibitor Community Lines Up For FESPA Global Print Expo 2021 In Amsterdam

LONDON — November 10, 2020 — FESPA Global Print Expo and European Sign Expo 2021 (9-12 March 2021, RAI Amsterdam, The Netherlands) are attracting a growing line-up of exhibitors, all enthusiastic to engage with customers and prospects face-to-face after a year reliant on digital platforms to communicate and share product news.

The floor plan for the co-located events is building out steadily, with 200+ exhibiting companies already committed to participating in Spring next year and many more in active discussions. The expanding exhibitor list includes many prominent names in screen, digital wide format and textile print, representing the entire production workflow from output technologies and workflow tools to media and inks.

FESPA CEO Neil Felton comments: “Since we opened the dialogue with our exhibitors about the Spring 2021 events, we’ve heard a consistent message: they can’t wait to be at a live FESPA event again, interacting in person with people that have an appetite to learn, be inspired and make considered investments to drive their businesses forward out of the current crisis. They see the event as a vital springboard to the sector’s sustained recovery.”

“From the visitor’s perspective, senior decision-makers in speciality print and signage businesses are telling us that they want the opportunity to see the latest products and solutions close up, to compare and contrast what’s on offer from different vendors under one roof, and to be inspired again by getting away from a computer screen and interacting with product experts and industry peers in the real world. The virtual alternatives just don’t meet their needs.”

Visitors to the FESPA exhibition in March will see latest hardware innovations from companies including Agfa, Brother, Canon, d.gen, Durst, Polyprint DTG, Zund, Summa and swissQprint; substrates from suppliers including 3A Composites, Ahlstrom Munksjö, Avery Dennison and Hexis; workflow and colour management software from vendors including Barbieri, Caldera, OneVision and ONYX Graphic; and consumables from suppliers including CHT Group, Zhuhai Print-Rite and STS Inks. Signage professionals will also be able to see the latest innovations in non-printed signage, with confirmed exhibitors including CADlink Technology Corp, Efka Led Frames B.V. and LEDIT YAKI.

Folker Stachetzki, Marketing Manager at Brother, the Gold Sponsor for FESPA Global Print Expo 2021, comments on the company’s confidence in the event: “FESPA is the most important trade fair for us to present our new products live to a wide audience. The cancellation of the trade fair in 2020, as well as all other restrictions caused by the pandemic, were tough for us, as probably for almost everyone. We’re therefore looking forward to FESPA 2021, to meet interested visitors, to exchange experiences with other exhibitors, and to be able to show our new direct-to-garment printer and other innovations from Brother in front of the public again.”

Neil Felton concludes: “We’re delighted to see the positive appetite from both exhibitors and visitors to be back at a FESPA event, affirming the role we play in connecting this global speciality printing and sign-making community. In our capacity as the event organiser, we’re working hard to create a COVID-secure environment for both parties to do business in, drawing on the expertise and best practices of our team, the RAI Amsterdam venue, our specialist independent contractors and the wider event industry.”

Wrangler® Launches Collaboration With Adult Swim’s Hit Series Rick And Morty

GREENSBORO, N.C. — November 10, 2020 — Iconic global denim brand Wrangler® today announced a new collaboration with Adult Swim’s Emmy award-winning series Rick and Morty, in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products. With art never seen anywhere else in the multiverse, this collaboration includes a custom-designed laser etched jacket and an exclusive, episode-inspired t-shirt featuring the incomparable NX-5 Planet Remover. The Wrangler x Rick and Morty Collection will be exclusive to Wrangler.com and goes live today in anticipation of the excitement around the upcoming virtual Adult Swim Festival, streaming this Friday and Saturday on Adult Swim’s YouTube channel.

“Building innovative partnerships with iconic brands like Wrangler is a priority for Adult Swim and their heroic appearance in Rick and Morty created a new opportunity,” said Tricia Melton, chief marketing officer of Warner Bros. Kids, Young Adults and Classics. “Our fans often wear clothes and they love Rick and Morty, so they’re going to lose their minds over the new custom clothing launching today.”

The artwork was custom designed for this collaboration by the Rick and Morty creative team and brought to life by Wrangler’s design team using an in-house laser machine and a classic, iconic jacket design.

“Wrangler has always embraced pop culture as a way to reach new fans, and when we were organically part of the season 4 finale episode, it was the perfect opportunity for us to explore a larger partnership with Adult Swim,” said Holly Wheeler, vice president of global brand marketing at Wrangler. “The collection is a direct play on the finale and inspired by the laser that was fictionally ‘sponsored by Wrangler’ in the show. We loved the tongue-in-cheek joke since lasers are actually a big part of our denim production – from digital wash applications to onsite customer customization with our nano-laser. The collaboration was a fun and natural way for us to do something authentic with our brand that joins in on the joke.”

Starting today, November 10, the Wrangler x Rick and Morty Collection will be available on Wrangler.com.

Goldwin Releases World’s First Sweater Knitted With Innovative Fabric Produced Through Microbial Fermentation

TOKYO — November 10, 2020 — Fast fashion is among the leading contributors to climate change and one of the most ravenous industrial consumers of natural resources. It accounts for 8 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions globally, and, according to researchers’ most recent estimates, generated 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2016 — more than all international flights and maritime freighter trips combined.

On top of that, the fabrics predominantly used in fast fashion — polyester, nylon and other man-made fabrics — are petroleum-based and shed microplastics, making them harmful to the environment and poorly suited for use as sustainable materials. Cotton, another commonly used fiber, is one of the most water-intensive crops in the world. All of this points to the conclusion that most traditional methods of clothing manufacturing are unsustainable, and clothing brands must take responsibility and do more to innovate and pivot towards more environmentally conscious materials and production methods.

Today, international technical apparel brand, Goldwin, and biomaterial innovator, Spiber, announce the latest product of their partnership. Called simply The Sweater, it’s the world’s first knitted garment made with Brewed Protein™, a biopolymer whose plant-based microbial fermentation process makes it well-positioned to deliver significant contributions to animal- and plastic-free initiatives in a range of fields and industries.

The Sweater is a milestone in Goldwin and Spiber’s shared mission to reduce the fashion industry’s impact on the environment by replacing traditional, petrochemical-based materials and production methods with innovative, biobased solutions.

The Sweater:

  • Designed to emulate a traditional ski sweater, with a low gauge knit and twisted yarn that delivers an ultra soft and comfortable feel;
  • 30-percent Brewed Protein™, 70-percent wool;
  • Available in unisex sizes S, M, L; and
  • Made in Japan.

The Sweater is a highly exclusive item that will be produced in limited quantities. From November 9, 8 am EST to November 29, 12 am EST, anyone in 11 countries (Japan, United States, Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom, Sweden, and the Netherlands) can enter an online lottery system that will determine who receives the opportunity to purchase The Sweater. On November 30, 2020, winners will be selected randomly and notified via email of their eligibility to purchase The Sweater. Beginning on December 25, 2020, The Sweater will be shipped to those in the 11 countries who purchased it.

The Sweater is Goldwin and Spiber’s first Brewed Protein™ garment brought to market in the US. In 2019, The North Face Japan, which is operated by Goldwin Inc., collaborated with Spiber to release the MOON PARKA, the world’s first outerwear jacket featuring microbially-produced fabric. Designed primarily as a conceptual garment, the parka was available for sale only in Japan and was produced in highly limited quantities. Goldwin and Spiber’s partnership began in 2015, but The Sweater marks the beginning of a new phase in the partnership, which the companies call “Vision Quest,” a project that unites partners around the world in the quest for a better future.

“Mankind has continued to evolve the sweater via the use of technology and knowledge throughout history and it is now essential winter wear,” said Takao Watanabe, Goldwin’s head of development. “The sweater has remained loved by many and its design has also remained largely unchanged since the original sweater first came into existence. The reason why it has played such a big role in the cultures and histories of people all over the world is due to the diverse and versatile animal fibers and the sweater knits that use these to their full potential. The Sweater was devised while probing the origins of the supposed original form of these sweaters and what of this will persist into the future. Furthermore, black is a color that is made by mixing all other colors and is also said to be the original color. These sweaters that have been with us from the beginning will lead us to the future through modern-day technology. This single black piece of apparel that signifies both the past and the future.”

Standard Textile Combats Homelessness With 80,000 Showers

CINCINNATI — November 9, 2020 — Standard Textile Co. Inc. announced today it is launching a national program to combat homelessness. The company is partnering with four non-profit organizations across the United States that provide mobile shower services to people living either on the streets or in insufficient housing, with a goal of supporting 80,000 showers by the end of 2021.

For 80 years, Standard Textile has been partnering with organizations to help bring comfort to those in need. Through product donations, financial support, and volunteerism, the company has continually supported efforts to make a meaningful impact in the communities where employees work, live, and raise their families. To honor the company’s legacy of inspiring care, comfort, and change in communities, it is expanding its commitment by launching “Standard Textile Cares.”

“Ending homelessness requires a comprehensive approach,” said Gary Heiman, Standard Textile’s president and CEO. “It begins by treating those experiencing homelessness with dignity and respect which are basic values that our partner organizations offer. And it begins with basic essentials such as a safe place to bathe and a soft towel and blanket to provide comfort. These simple acts have the potential of changing outcomes and creating a better future for those in need.”

It is estimated that 150 million people are homeless worldwide, according to UN-Habitat, an organization that monitors homelessness globally. In the United States, approximately half a million individuals experience homelessness each day, and that number is increasing due to the pandemic crisis.

“It takes a village to do this work, and we are honored that Standard Textile is partnering with us,” said Kris Kepler, CEO of LavaMaeX. “The towels, washcloths, and blankets they have donated will help our unhoused guests stay clean and warm this winter. The LavaMaeX staff and I are incredibly grateful for their commitment to helping restore dignity to our unhoused neighbors.”

Empowering and promoting the social and economic inclusion of all is a core value for Standard Textile. The company was founded in 1940 by Charles Heiman who escaped the Dachau concentration camp. Mr. Heiman sought refuge in Cincinnati, Ohio where he and his family began sewing pillowcases in their third-floor apartment and delivered them to local inns and hospitals. As the need for textiles grew, Charles hired other refugees seeking sanctuary in Cincinnati.

“We applaud the efforts of organizations such as LavaMaeX, Shower Up, Streetside Showers, and Hope Thru Soap,” said Gary Heiman. “Our mission is to create bed and bath products that provide comfort to all who use our products. We are pleased that we can extend this value to assisting individuals during a time in their lives when care and comfort are needed the most.”

International Yarn Industry Exhibition Filo At Work For The 55th Edition

BIELLA, Italy — November 6, 2020 — Despite some uncertainties related to the resurgence of COVID-19, Filo does not give up its role as the leading international exhibition for the yarn industry and begins planning its 55th edition, scheduled for February 24-25, 2021, at MiCo – Milan Convention Centre.

In view of the 55th edition of Filo, the first step will be, as usual, the presentation of product development proposals, which will take place in December through a webinar.

Paolo Monfermoso, general manager of Filo, explained: “The presentation of product development proposals is a situation where digital tools are an added value for our fair. Even beyond the current traveling difficulties, the webinar enables us to reach, at one time and in a simple, efficient and quick way, all those people who are interested in participating, in Italy and abroad, from exhibitors to style department officers and journalists. Figures on the rate of participation in July webinar for the presentation of the 54th edition of Filo show how this channel allowed us to talk to a wider audience, compared to the one that traditionally participated in Biella, Milan and Prato meetings”.

Monfermoso added: “From our point of view, the opposite is true when we come to the presentation of exhibiting companies’ products: in this case, the show in attendance is essential. Virtual exhibitions, in fact, are not enough to show all the qualities of a textile product and the great creativity of our companies that is at the basis. In addition, virtual exhibitions fail to account for the flexibility and adaptability that exhibiting companies put at the service of their customers. In October Filo was a further confirmation of this concept, also for its ability to demonstrate the desire and tenacity with which the exhibiting companies intend to respond to the crisis caused by the pandemic, resuming together — from a supply chain perspective — the path of growth.
