Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee Passes Portman, Peters Bipartisan Make PPE In America Act

WASHINGTON — May 12, 2021 — Today, U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Ranking Member and Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, applauded the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee for passing their bipartisan legislation that will strengthen efforts to onshore production of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the United States by requiring federal agencies to issue long-term contracts for American-made PPE. Reshoring production will ensure American workers, health care professionals, and more have the PPE they need as the economy continues to reopen. Domestic production of PPE supplies also will create American manufacturing jobs and ensure that America is better prepared for the next pandemic.

“The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has made it evident that the American people should not have to rely so heavily on foreign countries for personal protective equipment, and that’s why we must bring PPE production back to our shores. I’m pleased that the Senate Homeland and Governmental Affairs Committee has passed the Make PPE In America Act this morning,” said Senator Portman, ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. “When I talk to PPE manufacturers about re-shoring this production to America, the number one thing I hear about is the need for long-term contracts. Multi-year contracts give producers the certainty to know that their investment in the United States will be worth it because the government will be there to buy the PPE they produce. By re-shoring production of PPE, we can continue to support a safe and effective reopening of our schools, workplaces, and the economy.”

“I have long raised the alarm that our overreliance on foreign manufacturers for masks, gloves and medical devices is a serious national security concern. Due to ongoing efforts by the Biden Administration to boost PPE production, we are making progress, but there is more work to do,” said Senator Peters, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. “I am pleased this commonsense legislation, which will create jobs and improve our response to the ongoing and future pandemics, has advanced in the Senate and I will continue fighting for its passage into law.”

“We want to thank the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee for adopting the Make PPE in America Act, today to help guarantee long-term contracts for American companies to onshore critical PPE production,” said Kim Glas, president and CEO of the National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO). “This legislation will incentivize investment in and the viability of domestic PPE manufacturing, ensuring our nation remains prepared for future crises. We also want to thank Senators Gary Peters (D-MI) and Rob Portman (R-OH) for introducing this important legislation, which will ensure several critical departments like Homeland Security and Health and Human Services will spend taxpayer dollars here at home on American-made PPE, and boost U.S. manufacturing capacity.”

Oerlikon Manmade Fibers Solutions: Safe And Sound – Data Security In Smart Factories

REMSCHEID, Germany — May 5, 2021 — Digitalization has a very good chance of becoming one of the words of the year. Digital solutions are enjoying a boom — particularly in the age of mobile working, travel restrictions and limited personal contact. Here, we all transmit a considerable amount of data through the web that we need to know is absolutely secure. When it comes to digitalization, Oerlikon Manmade Fibers Solutions pays particular attention to one thing — data security in smart factories.

The IT experts within the Oerlikon Manmade Fibers Solutions business unit are also busy ensuring the data of its customers are secure. Digital solutions such as Remote Service, AIM4DTY, Smart Maintenance Workshops, Plant Operation Center and the fully networked ‘smart’ factory necessitate a secure infrastructure.

How this can be achieved is explained by Sebastian Helmer, responsible for Information Security at Oerlikon Manmade Fibers Solutions: ‘Secure by Design’ is currently standard practice for establishing the necessary IT security in the product from the outset. With our textile market expertise, intensive interaction with customers and our company-internal international experience, we have developed a picture of our customers’ requirements, which we are constantly expanding. We also deploy common standards in the development of solutions – including ISO27001 and IEC62443, among others. Building on this, we develop our own smart factory security solutions, all the way through to customized solutions. We test new solutions by means of so-called pen tests – here, tests are carried out to hack the system in order to close potential security gaps in a targeted manner — in order to further improve them and check our environments with security architecture reviews.”

Adler

The smart factory

Ceasing to be a mere vision long ago: the smart factory. Of critical importance here is the close relationship between IT and innovation. “With the smart factory concept, we have developed from an operator into a consultant. On the one hand, IT enables innovation. At the same time, innovation is, however, also taking place in IT — culminating in new-generation digital products. Hence, both cross-fertilize each other”, explains Chief Technology Officer at Oerlikon Manmade Fibers Solutions Jochen Adler, talking about the interaction between the two disciplines.

Operating a yarn manufacturing system requires various components and solutions: everything is present — from the control level, the Human Machine Interface (HMI), the automation systems, the Plant Operation Center all the way through to cloud solutions. All this requires smart infrastructure, which — in addition to a reliable network — includes a high-performance edge computing solution that, coupled with a modern software platform (CSP) and a correspondingly high security level, safeguards the security and the quality of the end product. By nature, data security is also decisive for all downstream processes within the textile value chain that build on the collated data or for merchandise management systems that are directly connected to the smart factory.

Helmer

Secure data exchange

Services such as Remote Support and tools including the AIM4DTY training center necessitate data exchange. “Here, we draw on high standards for the purpose of encryption, customer separation and also minimizing data”, states Sebastian Helmer. “We basically distinguish between three categories of threat scenario: firstly, we have the unconscious actions of employees who unintentionally load malware onto a system without realizing this themselves. Then there are the attacks that have no concrete objective; here, perpetrators attempt to attack a company by means of SPAM or phishing. And, finally, there are attacks that focus concretely on a specific company. Here, perpetrators try to plant malware using targeted methods. This can extend all the way through to social engineering in order to exert influence over the relevant persons.”

The Oerlikon Manmade Fibers Solutions business unit is superbly equipped for the task with its smart factory solutions: “We have been supplying our customers with secure, certified hardware for decades now. And we also apply these standards to our software solutions: our digital products work with a safety net and a false bottom — hence ensuring secure and reliable operation at the customer site”, promises Jochen Adler.

Trinseo Offers Recycled Polystyrene Via Dissolution Technology

BERWYN, Pa — May 10, 2021 — Trinseo, a global materials company and manufacturer of plastics, latex binders and synthetic rubber recently commercialized its recycled polystyrene (PS) from dissolution technology and is offering a new material using this process — STYRON™ CO2RE™ 687DI30. This is the first of a series of recycled PS products that Trinseo intends to launch under the STYRON CO2RE brand in the coming years.

With this material/recycling method, post-consumer recycled (PCR) material is dissolved in a solvent followed by a series of purification steps to separate the polymer from additives and contaminants. The material is fed into a polymerization reactor train and the result is a PS polymer with 30 percent PCR content for use in applications including consumer electronics, packaging, and food contact applications if a functional barrier is present to ensure compliance.

According to Trinseo’s Plastics Circularity Manager Julien Renvoise, STYRON CO2RE 687DI30 Polystyrene supports a circular economy. “By reclaiming used plastic, we can make sure that a material that otherwise might have ended up as post-consumer waste not only is reused productively but contributes to sustainable manufacturing and a positive impact on the environment.”

To measure impact, Trinseo compared a general-purpose polystyrene produced with 100 percent fossil fuel with a batch made from 30 percent post-consumer recycled content in a lifecycle assessment and found a 15 percent reduction in CO2 emissions. In another study Trinseo found that performance properties remained similar. This includes transparency, a difficult property to achieve with recycled content.

Dissolution is a physical recycling approach for PS that preserves the molecular structure of the recyclate. Trinseo has been focused on finding ways to recycle PS due to the polymer’s unique capacity for full circularity including its intrinsic capability to be fully recycled into the constituent monomer.

Recycled PS is just one of Trinseo’s sustainable materials aimed at circularity. The company also is involved with depolymerization with technology provided by partner, Recycling Technologies, and plans to build a dedicated plant at its Tessenderlo, Belgium location. This will be one of two polystyrene recycling plants in Europe estimated to add a total of 30,000 tons of polystyrene feedstock into the European marketplace.
