Sustainable, Flexible And Adaptive: Freudenberg Will Be Showcasing New, Innovative Materials In The Sports And Outdoor Sector At The Digital Performance Days

WEINHEIM, Germany — May 12, 2021 — Freudenberg Performance Materials Apparel will showcase not one, but two, new solutions in the sports and outdoor sector at the digital Performance Days from May 17 to 21, 2021 being staged online at www.performancedays.com: Freudenberg is now offering customers the Freudenberg Active Range of sustainable, highly elastic and breathable interlinings and tapes for all types of sportswear, and is also expanding its product portfolio with the comfortemp® FLEXX innovative padding, the first adaptive thermal insulation featuring elastic reinforcement elements.

Freudenberg Active Range

With the new Freudenberg Active Range, the company is once again underpinning its sustainability aspirations. Most of the products in this range are made from at least 70 percent recycled polyester that Freudenberg produces in a closed loop system from used PET bottles. The company recycles around seven million of these plastic bottles per day, making it the largest user of post-consumer PET bottles in Europe. In the Freudenberg Active Range, a special technology ensures that highly-elastic outer fabrics retain their flexibility and remain breathable despite being fixed. Thanks to their highly-developed adhesive polymers, selected products in the range are exceptionally suitable even for complicated outer fabrics that are difficult to process. The bonding compound is applied to a carrier material in the form of small dots without using a base material. Moreover, the Freudenberg Active Range also features sewable interlinings that allow a natural yet elastic feel while keeping the garment in the desired shape – the solution for outer fabrics that do not allow fixation or where no fixation of the interlining is desired.

comfortemp® FLEXX: adaptive thermal insulation

Thin, extremely air-permeable and breathable: that is comfortemp® FLEXX from Freudenberg. The first adaptive insulation comprising a warming and breathable padding with elastic reinforcement elements is made from 97 percent recycled polyester and is ideal for use in outdoor sportswear designed for cycling, running and skiing. When the wearer moves, the padding expands, and when movement stops, the padding contracts again. The high-performance thermal insulation even keeps the wearer warm when wet and has an outstanding stretch content of up to 20 percent. Moreover, the innovative processing of the padding using reinforcement threads prevents fiber migration through the outer fabric. comfortemp FLEXX complies with the OEKO-TEX standard and is supplied by the meter, thus reducing production time and processing costs for garment manufacturers.

Avgol, Algaeing Join Forces On New Sustainable Algae-Powered Technology

TEL-AVIV, Israel— May 11, 2021 — A new collaboration has been established between Avgol®, producer of spunlaid nonwoven fabrics, and Algaeing™, a textile innovation company that invented and patented algae biobased formulations for colorants and fibers.

The parties will first focus on the use of Algaeing’s unique environmental solution for modifying the aesthetic qualities of materials with Avgol’s ongoing commitment to sustainable polyolefin based spunbond and meltblown fabrics.

Algaeing’s technologies utilize various algae species to produce a wide range of appealing colors, many of which replicate the colors used in nonwoven fabrics today. The benefits of using an algae bio-source go far beyond the removal of chemically synthesized colorants, and include synergistic benefits of vastly reduced water consumption, chemical/fertilizer use, and carbon dioxide emissions.

“We’re very excited to bring our technology into the realm of spunlaid nonwovens,” commented Renana Krebs, CEO of Algaeing. “The opportunities to utilize our technology in Avgol’s sustainable component materials and bring color, as well as the skin wellness attributes of algae-derived health benefits into personal care items, is an incredible opportunity to reduce the human impact around the world on a large scale. We’re thrilled to be partnering with a leading global brand like Avgol and introducing Algaeing’s ‘triple good solution’ (good for the planet, for the industry and our skin) to new and exciting markets such as Hygiene and Medical with a wide range of applications.”

Shachar Rachim, CEO of Avgol, said: “Avgol is building a portfolio of products and materials to offer 100-percent sustainable end-products for hygiene, medical, PPE and industrial applications. Our recent announcement on the collaboration with Polymateria and the Biotransformation Technology for fugitive single use articles fills out one part of the overall catalogue. Creating a link with other companies which have a drive towards the future and round out our offering is critical for supporting our vision. We found that exact motivation in Algaeing.”

The companies have been working together since 2020 and have proven the Algaeing colorant technology in proof of concept and prototyping phases. The parties are now preparing to enter the next stages of the product introduction pipeline.

Application of the integrated color and nonwoven technologies will be concentrating initially on the Hygiene and Medical/Personal Protection Equipment markets. Specifically, body liner materials for Absorbent Hygiene Products (AHP’s) and face mask/face covering components shall be key targets in their respective markets for the first-generation product launch.

The overarching developmental approach takes into consideration both current and future needs for product safety. For Avgol, this means development of a well-rounded set of capabilities that address removal or replacement of substances including phthalates, titanium dioxide and certain synthetic additives.

“The benefits of Algaeing’s technology also fit well with Avgol’s desire for materials that are more readily recyclable and biodegradable,” Rachim continued. “Having an organic colorant that can be removed during the recycling process and has no negative impact when released into the environment if undergoing biodegradation, supports polyolefins as future-proof resins.”

ITMA ASIA + CITME 2020 Exhibitor Preview: Stäubli

PFÄFFIKON, Switzerland — May 11, 2021 — At ITMA Asia 2020, Stäubli will present its wide range of machinery equipped with state-of-the-art, high-end technologies and software solutions that offer new and expanded benefits to textile mills. The trade fair will be taking place from June 12-16 at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre (NECC) in Shanghai. Visitors to the Stäubli booth at C21 in Hall 3 will learn how Stäubli solutions can boost weaving or sock-knitting performance and their overall mill efficiency.

The optimal course of a weaving process depends on many various prerequisites resulting as well from upstream processes, including yarn processing and warp preparation. With its SAFIR series of drawing-in systems, Stäubli offers unique advantages, such as the preparation of top-quality warps with perfectly aligned yarns. The secret is AWC (Active Warp Control), Stäubli’s exclusive yarn sorting technology, which handles both single and multiple yarn types. Visitors to the Stäubli booth will experience how the precision and ingenious technology of the SAFIR S40 automatic drawing-in machine leads to more first-quality output and supports on-time delivery.

Frame weaving – new Stäubli developments expand the range of solutions

Thanks to its continual R&D activities, Stäubli delivers machinery that perfectly meets evolving market demands and the associated customer requirements. Stäubli frame-weaving solutions are renowned for reliable high-speed weaving and adaptability to any kind of plain or patterned fabric and any kind of weaving machine. Robustness and high quality have made the broad range of 1600/1700 series of cam motions and the S3000/S3200 series of electronic rotary dobbies well known as extremely reliable workhorses with a very long service life. These machines form a perfect system in combination with dedicated maintenance-free Stäubli transmissions, which are built to the highest quality standards.

Jacquard weaving – Stäubli covers the spectrum

From large-format machines (up to 25,600 hooks) to name selvedge Jacquard machines, weavers can choose from a wide range of Stäubli electronic Jacquard weaving solutions. The LXM Jacquard machine will be presented at ITMA Asia. It is available in two formats (2,688 and 5,376 hooks) and thus meets the requirements of a wide range of applications and assures reliable operation at high weaving speeds. Stäubli’s convincing answer to the growing need to protect premium proprietary fabrics with brand-name selvedges is the N4L name Jacquard machine, which is being shown for the first time in Asia at ITMA. This machine boasts easy handling, high availability, and reduced maintenance needs. It stands for quality brand-name weaving.

Carpet weaving – ALPHA 500 series of Schönherr carpet systems

Area rugs or wall-to-wall carpeting. Low pile, lightweight loops, flat, cut pile, or high density – whatever the next carpet-weaving challenge may be, the ALPHA 500 carpet weaving system adds immense flexibility to any carpet-weaving mill. It weaves the highest-quality applications and enables swift response to rapidly changing market demands.

Sock knitting – D4S toe-closing device increases productivity

Sock manufacturers face tough challenges. They must be able to rapidly adjust to market demands and meet tight delivery schedules. In sock knitting, toe closing is the critical step. It is very time consuming and helps determine the quality. This is where the D4S toe-closing device comes into play. Installed directly on the circular knitting machine, it closes one sock whilst the machine is already knitting the next one. Visitors to the Stäubli booth will see the impressive efficiency of this device in action.

Besides offering many decisive functional advantages, Stäubli machines promise a very long lifespan, especially when original replacement parts are used. Stäubli keeps these in stock for many years after the sale. This is in keeping with the company’s mission: offering advantages and benefits to customers and providing genuine partnership for successful and sustainable business.

Restaurants Get Mother’s Day Boost From TRSA Social Media Campaign

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — May 14, 2021 — To generate additional business for tablecloth restaurants on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 9, a 2-week TRSA social media and remarketing campaign aimed at consumers fulfilled its mission to support these linen service customers. Web analytics showed high viewership of the campaign video and TRSA member linen, uniform and facility services operators reported increased demand from restaurants for the celebration.

“From Alsco Uniforms’ operations perspective, we saw an uptick in restaurant business, especially restaurants that use table linen,” reported Ben Fox, sales and marketing director of this Salt Lake City-based company, the nation’s largest restaurant linen service. Because Mother’s Day weekend is usually the busiest time of year for restaurants, peak demand for hygienically clean reusable textiles such as napkins and tablecloths puts linen service laundry processing and delivery into overdrive.

“Fine dining definitely had a break-through weekend. In talking with our national customers, they were booked solid throughout the day,” he observed.

Alsco personnel in locations across the United States began working with the company’s purchasing team as early as February to ensure proper inventory and encouraged customers to place orders early. COVID-19 was a factor. “We had to be very strategic as markets started reopening and having increased demand on inventory on top of the increased demand for Mother’s Day,” Fox said. “By all signs that extra communication helped us meet the inventory needs of all of our customers for the entire weekend.”

Launched April 28 and run through Mother’s Day, the campaign was a landmark TRSA effort to reach linen, uniform and facility services customers. “This is the most engaging video we’ve run ads for in the industry,” said Jeff Wile, owner, Infinite Laundry, Coral Springs, FL, which has placed internet campaigns for TRSA and industry operators for a decade.

The TRSA video and campaign targeted typical fine-dining customers with remarketing ads on the Google AdWords platform. A female narrator reads the video script, saying, “This Mother’s Day, give mom the gift she really wants…the gift of sitting down for a fine dining experience with delicious food surrounded by loved ones. There is nothing quite like the ambience of the white table linen experience on Mother’s Day. Call and make your reservations today!”

The video ads were shown 39,648 times on Google’s YouTube platform and 44% (17,445) of the users who received the ad watched the 30-second video to its completion. Facebook/Instagram plays hit nearly 6,000 video views with 7,969 ad impressions.

Such high level video engagement testifies to the quality of the video content and the custom audience used to target the ads. “Most other YouTube campaigns are in the 15% to 35% range depending on length, content, audience and other factors,” Wile added.  TRSA members’ dedication to sharing the content on their own social media channels also contributed to the campaign’s success.

Mother’s Day and the day before are the two busiest restaurant spending days of the year, according to Womply, a software and data firm that works with credit card processors to collect data for 4 million small businesses across the United States. The day before produces a restaurant industry revenue bump greater than the day itself: typically 62% more (compared with 60%), making it the biggest day of the year overall. But the 60% increase on Mother’s Day, making it the No. 2 day of the year, is “a particularly impressive feat,” Womply says, as 17% fewer restaurants are open for business that day.

Another signal of a strong Mother’s Day: linen services are swamped with restaurants’ last-minute requests for inventory or special items. “No matter how much you encourage customers to order extra, sometimes even they get surprised with last minute bookings. Our operations teams were on standby all weekend to ensure specials could be handled in a timely manner,” Fox said.

ANDRITZ Receives Order For A New Batt Forming Line For Stitchbonding From Pratrivero, Italy

GRAZ, Austria — May 17, 2021 — International technology Group ANDRITZ has received an order from Pratrivero S.p.a. to supply a new eXcelle batt forming line for its production facilities in Valdilana, Italy. The line will be dedicated to the production of Maliwatt products, used in furnishing, automotive, naval, medical, geotextiles, advertising, clothing, and packaging applications. Installation and start-up are scheduled for the third quarter of 2021.

The Andritz batt forming line includes an eXcelle card and eXcelle crosslapper, a ProDyn™ web profiling correction system as well as a scanning gauge with a closed loop. The ProDyn system combines actions from the card doffers with dynamic speed variation at the crosslapper. This will result in substantial fiber savings and reduction in CV%, providing improved weight evenness in the final product. The ProDyn closed loop will ensure the best possible self-regulation for the equipment and thus enable Pratrivero to produce one of the best product qualities on the market. Pratrivero will be the world’s first company to use the ProDyn technology in the Maliwatt stitchbonding process.

Stitchbond is a nonwoven process made by mechanically interlocking fiber webs with continuous filaments, thus imitating textiles. Stitchbonded products are used in many applications due to their lower production costs compared to woven textiles. Among all the different nonwoven processes in which it operates, Andritz is also a market-leading supplier of batt forming equipment for the stitchbonding processes producing Maliwatt, Malivlies and quilting.

Pratrivero has trusted in Andritz once again because of its reputation regarding process expertise and high level of carding and crosslapping technology involved. The company already operates several Andritz eXcelle batt forming units.

Pratrivero is an important player in the production of nonwoven fabrics using stitchbonding technology. The company has several plants in Italy and the United States, producing different types of stitchbonded products. The centuries-old tradition of the Italian company, founded in 1663, combined with modern technology has enabled Pratrivero to bring stitchbonding to a high-end quality level with unique characteristics.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand Tours Ferrara Manufacturing To Celebrate Unionized Apparel Shop’s Contract To Make 17 Million Masks

NEW YORK CITY — May 17, 2021 — U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) joined with leaders and members of Workers United, the nation’s clothing manufacturing union, and the owners of Ferrara Manufacturing, a family-owned, female-led small business which traditionally manufactures luxury clothing for brands including Ralph Lauren, to celebrate the fulfillment of an order of 17.3 million masks, one of the first to be awarded through the American Rescue Plan.

Earlier this year, Ferrara Manufacturing, in partnership with Workers United and industry allies were awarded a contract to produce up to 17.3 million face masks. This award was among the first allocations of the $3B allocated in the 2021 American Rescue Plan for federal procurement of domestically made Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Senator Gillibrand voted for the legislation and was encouraged by the award to her constituents in New York’s fabled Garment District. This contract stabilized and helped create hundreds of union jobs in New York and thousands across the impacted supply chain in the Southeast USA.

The order was created as part of President Joe Biden’s commitment to Build Back Better and invest in American business. Of significance, the masks comply with the Berry Amendment requirements that mandate that products be made from American fabric sources and manufactured in American factories and traditionally apply to apparel products produced for the Department of Defense.

This contract creates masks for community health centers, food pantries, and soup kitchens across the country. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has been a proponent of the plans to award contracts to domestic factories, and earlier this year she introduced the End Outsourcing Act, which will provide tax benefits to companies that help bring good paying jobs back to America, re-employing workers and helping the economy recover.

“We are thrilled our workers have the opportunity to fulfill these orders,” said Edgar Romney, Secretary-Treasurer of Workers United/SEIU. “Through this partnership we have proven that we can create good jobs for union workers rebuilding a vibrant supply chain for PPE, serving essential workers. We deeply appreciate Senator Gillibrand’s support and hope that this example illustrates why all federal procurement of PPE should be made with domestic content, right here at home.”

“As in the beginning of the pandemic, we are proud to meet the crisis to produce PPE for our essential workers,” said Gabrielle Ferrara, COO of Ferrara Manufacturing. “That blueprint for this partnership is rooted in the height of the pandemic in spring 2020 in New York, when COVID-19’s ravages had shuttered the outsourced global PPE supply chain, leaving our health care workforce vulnerable and at deadly risk. Together we met that crisis, joining over 30 other unionized manufacturers and Southern textile industry partners to safely re-open, re-engineer our operations, and re-build a domestic supply chain to make gowns, masks, and face shields for essential workers across the nation, saving countless lives. We look forward to continuing to provide the highest quality, American-made masks.”

This week, the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee passed a bi-partisan Made in America PPE Act, which will require federal agencies to procure products made from American fabric sources and manufactured in American factories. This act not only provides a pathway to create American jobs but incentivizes manufacturers, like Ferrara, to continue investing in capacity to complete Federal PPE bids under stable, long term contracts.
