HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — May 23, 2022 — The Jones Family of Companies continues to grow and improve its operations while strengthening its position as a nonwoven manufacturing leader. The most recent step in this mission is the re-hiring of West Tennessee native, Scott Butler as its new COO.

Butler was born in Jackson, Tenn., and raised in Humboldt. He earned his undergraduate degree at Union University in Organizational Leadership and his MBA at UT Knoxville.
Butler is a third generation Jones associate, following in the footsteps of his parents and grandparents where his father spent 43 years. Scott began his career at Jones in 1992 on the third shift running yarn equipment on the plant floor. After mastering all the equipment, he moved into maintenance, serving as Maintenance supervisor, ISO Lead auditor, plant management, Quality manager, Operations manager, and vice president of Operations.

Butler left Jones at the end of December 2018 to care for his family and wife, who was battling cancer. Following her recovery, he started a consulting and industrial maintenance services company where he was highly successful assisting companies across the U.S. to be more efficient and productive while building strong and supportive teams.

“Scott works to develop a team of associates that maximize efforts to make the highest quality of product on time, every time. He believes in highly disciplined operations and lean standards,” said Ralph Jones, executive chairman. “Scott’s passion is assisting associates and teams to maximize their potential and add value to the associate, the team, and the company, as well as our customer and suppliers.”

SDCE Introduces PVC Sensor Film

HOLMFIRTH, England — May 19, 2022 — SDCE has introduced PVC Sensor Film into its extensive offer of consumables, widening its industry appeal to the protective clothing sector. The sensor film — which is an essential consumable for testing to BS EN ISO Standard 9185:2007 — will enable testing professionals to assess the resistance of their materials to molten metal splash in line with international safety standards.

PVC Sensor Film acts as a skin simulant, sitting underneath the testing sample during an application of molten metal. The resulting damage to the PVC mimics the potential damage to human skin, providing a vital insight for the niche protective clothing sector into the effectiveness of their protective materials.

The launch comes after SDCE was approached by industry professionals seeking a new supplier for PVC film. Recognizing the synergy between the skin simulant and its existing range of testing consumables, the industry’s leading supplier of textile testing consumables was well-placed to fulfill industry demand for the product. The move into safety and protective textile testing does however represent a diversification for SDCE, whose existing consumables focus primarily on the quality control of textiles through physical, color fastness and light fastness test procedures.

Testing professionals in the sector have welcomed the launch, which fills a very real gap in the testing market. “I would like to stress that the skin simulant is critical for the test method, but also for notified bodies (in the EU) and other labs (outside the EU) to certify compliance for heat and flame industrial garments,” said chair of the ISO/TC 94/SC13 “Protective clothing” Eric van Wely, who is also global regulatory affairs and standards manager at DuPont Personal Protection. “I have been made aware of the issues since 2019, and it has been difficult to find a supplier and then a potential distributor for the labs.”

For those carrying out the tests, SDCE’s position as a trusted and established supplier of testing consumables provides reassurance that the product will be consistent and reliable.

“It was important to find a supplier capable of supplying all the laboratories with an identical PVC heat sensor in order to limit the dispersion of results between laboratories,” says Cédric Rossard, responsable laboratoire for the Institut Français du Textile et de l’Habillement, whose facility tests to ISO 9185. “Although we do still have some PVC from our previous supplier, this is an essential element of the test.”

Other professionals meanwhile praised SDCE’s fast response in getting the product to market, despite its niche nature.

“There was some misconception in the non-urgent nature of this material — in reality, some labs really needed this material very urgently,” says Inge de Witte PhD, certification manager at Centexbel, Belgium. “Although the amount of material needed worldwide is not that large, the importance of the material is all the more. SDCE’s PVC Sensor film will become the essential  reference material in in all molten metal testing labs, and we can only emphasize again how important it was that this product was launched.”

Garments Capturing Carbon Dioxide From The Air And Releasing It As Nutrition For Plants – The Carbon Looper Is Now Live At Fotografiska Stockholm

STOCKHOLM — May 23, 2022 — The Planet First program initiated by the H&M Foundation and world-renowned The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA) has recently resulted in an innovation that could potentially be a game-changer when it comes to fighting global CO2 emissions. The Carbon Looper project — clothing that captures CO2 from the air and then releases it as nutrition for plants — is now being tested by the restaurant staff at Fotografiska Stockholm.

Finding ways to lower carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere is an urgent planet-wide priority. It is crucial to initiate and accelerate change, and all research in this area is of the highest interest and deserves our full attention. With the Planet First program, the H&M Foundation and HKRITA aim to push the entire fashion industry toward becoming planet positive instead of depleting its resources.

“We want to find new solutions that can enable the fashion industry to become planet positive,” said Christiane Dolva, Strategy Lead at H&M Foundation. “And since change needs to happen now, we focus on impatient research to innovate at speed, with rapid iterations to identify disruptive and scalable solutions. Our Planet First program with HKRITA is a perfect example of how we inspire industry-wide change by openly sharing proof of concepts. We don’t have time for the traditional and the slow, therefore we are not aiming for perfect but to get the solutions out of the lab as quickly as possible to be tested and improved, and to inspire others and spur collaborations that can ultimately lead to scale and adoption.”

With the Carbon Looper project, cotton garments are treated with amine-containing solution that makes the surface of the fabric captures carbon dioxide from the surrounding air. The carbon dioxide can then be released from the fabric by being heated to 30-40°C, in a greenhouse for example, where it can naturally be taken up by the plants during photosynthesis. The amount of CO2 that is captured by a garment per day, is approximately equivalent to 1/3 of the amount that a tree absorbs per day. And after only three ‘loop-cycles’, the garment has effectively climate-neutralized itself – and instead starts to have a climate positive effect. Improving and scaling this technology up is being intensely researched in parallel.

“Anything we do in the lab is only useful once it gets out of the lab,” said Edwin Keh, CEO at HKRITA. “The Carbon Looper is one of a series of projects we have been working on to see if we can achieve carbon neutrality for the textile, apparel and fashion industry. We will be monitoring this test at Fotografiska to see how we can improve the technology and develop more uses for it.”

The current research phase involves live testing in collaboration with Fotografiska Stockholm, where the restaurant staff will wear Carbon Loopers in the form of aprons. The restaurant’s famous hydroponic garden in the basement serves as an excellent CO2 release facility.

“This innovation is a perfect match with Fotografiska’s overall philosophy and the ideal add-on to our circular kitchen with a focus on organic and locally grown dishes,” said Martin Wall, executive chef and Planet Keeper at Fotografiska. “The project not only contributes to spiking our guests’ awareness around the climate crisis but is also inspiring evidence of the jaw-dropping research being done at the moment.”

Claros Technologies, Kureha Partner To Develop A Cutting-Edge PFAS Capture-And-Destruction System

MINNEAPOLIS — May 16, 2022 — Claros Technologies announced its strategic partnership with Kureha America Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Kureha Corp. Japan, to scale up a state-of-the-art technology that is capable of capturing, concentrating, and destroying “forever chemicals” (PFAS) from wastewater. The comprehensive solution is able to capture and concentrate PFAS chemicals, then permanently break their carbon-fluorine bonds into safe, naturally occurring elements. Kureha will collaborate with Claros to develop a commercially feasible system and install the system for Asian markets.

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of extremely stable, water- and oil-resisting compounds used in a wide variety of industries and consumer products. Found in drinking water of an estimated 200 million Americans, PFAS pose substantial risk to public and environmental health, having been associated with immunosuppression, reproductive issues, and a variety of cancers. This risk is compounded by the inability of natural processes to break PFAS down due to their extremely strong carbon-fluorine (C-F) bonds, earning PFAS the title of “forever chemicals.”

Teijin Frontier Develops New Chemical Recycling Technology For Polyester Fibers

TOKYO — May 22, 2022 — Teijin Frontier Co. Ltd., the Teijin Group’s fibers and products converting company, announced today that it has developed a recycling technology using a new depolymerization catalyst to recycle colored polyester fibers without losing the quality of polyester fibers made from petroleum-derived raw materials. The new technology also lowers environmental load compared to conventional recycling.

The technology produces recycled materials equivalent to petroleum-derived polyester raw materials. Using a new depolymerization catalyst for the conventional bis (2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) method, spent polyester is chemically decomposed and purified back into BHET intermediate raw material before being repolymerized into polyester. The production process is simpler than using dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) and ethylene glycol in a transesterification reaction, so recycling is achieved with less energy consumption. Also, the new technology reuses resources such as wastewater, waste liquid and depolymerization catalysts.

Teijin Frontier will launch a pilot facility at its Matsuyama Plant this month and proceed with verification tests. It also will continue developing recycling technologies to improve the quality of recycled polyester raw materials and reduce environmental load. Aiming to realize a sustainable value chain for a circular economy, Teijin Frontier is working to establish a mechanism for sustainable fiber-to-fiber recycling of polyester in cooperation with partner companies and consortiums both in Japan and global.

Compared to material recycling, which melts and molds used products including polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, DMT-based chemical recycling results in less deterioration of quality due to recycling, but its energy consumption is high. The BHET method is often used when recycling from colorless and transparent PET bottles as new PET bottles, and also its energy consumption is lower compared to the DMT method, but there were difficulties in producing high-quality recycled polyester raw material because foreign substances, such as dyes used for colored polyester fibers, could not be completely removed, resulting in discolored recycled raw material.

Teijin Frontier, guided by its THINK ECO® environmental initiative, is striving to improve its environmental value, including through eco-friendly plant management and the development of greener materials and products for applications ranging from clothing to industrial materials.

Dimension-Polyant Introduces Sustainable X-Pac® Fabrics With New cleenTEC® Seal At 2022 Outdoor Retailer Summer Market

PUTNAM, Conn. — May 24, 2022 — As part of its commitment to carbon neutrality, Dimension-Polyant has created a cleenTEC® seal to help identify and guarantee that X-Pac® fabrics have been made with recycled, bio-based, and/or responsibly sourced materials, and by responsible manufacturing processes and production facilities that are 100-percent climate neutral.

Working with internationally-respected ClimatePartner, Dimension-Polyant calculates the total environmental impact of each cleenTEC fabric, and funds initiatives that rid the oceans of plastic and invest in sustainable wind power developments to offset its carbon footprint.

“We wanted to create a seal that would help brands better identify and understand our responsibly-sourced, carbon-neutral fabrics — that we are more than just a supplier of another recycled fabric,” said Kenneth Madsen, president, Dimension-Polyant.

X-Pac RX is a collection of mono-polymer fabrics made with a 100 percent post-consumer recycled polyester face fabric and X-PLY® reinforcement. The recycled polyester fiber is made from discarded PET bottles sourced in the USA. A lighter-weight polyester film backing provides a sleek, technical appearance.

For a more natural aesthetic, Dimension-Polyant recently developed X-Pac X11, which is made with a 100-percent organic cotton duck face fabric, black recycled polyester X-PLY reinforcement and shiny polyester film backing.

Additional updates to the X-Pac collection of fabrics include that its strongest, most durable laminate, UVX40, is now made with bio-based Dyneema® fibers, and that all of its X-PLY fiber reinforcement is now made with domestically sourced, post-consumer recycled polyester.
