DOMO Produces Five Millionth Metric Ton Of Caprolactam

LEAUNA — March 21, 2022 — DOMO Chemicals announced today the successful delivery of 5 million metric tons of caprolactam at its Leuna site. The Leuna site has produced caprolactam in its facilities since 1942. This quantity is equivalent to approximately 225,000 truckloads. The German subsidiary DOMO Caproleuna has been producing caprolactam and polyamide at the site in the heart of Europe since 1994. During this period, production capacities have been gradually expanded to the current 176,000 metric tonnes per year.

Caprolactam production has an 80-year-old tradition at the Leuna site. The world’s first industrial-scale caprolactam production plant went into operation in Leuna as early as 1942. Since the DOMO Group took over the caprolactam plants in 1994, the technology and processes have been continuously enhanced and improved. Over the past 20 years, DOMO Caproleuna has been able to reduce specific energy consumption in medium-pressure steam by 30 percent and respectively in low-pressure steam by 40 percent, thus continuously optimizing the manufacturing process. Sustainability is one of the strategic pillars for the Group. DOMO Beyond is our roadmap for innovative projects to achieve our sustainability goals in the areas of Planet Care, Responsible Employer, and Partner of Choice. DOMO is committing to neutral CO2 emissions growth by 2030, respectively from 2019, establishing a 15-percent reduction in the carbon content of DOMO’s energy mix and a 7-percent reduction of industrial waste.

“Over the last 3 decades, we have continued to expand the caprolactam plant and have increased production volumes extensively. Today’s focus is clearly on increasing efficiency and saving energy,” says Dr. Thomas Jende, Production Manager for caprolactam.

The most important precursor for polyamide 6

Caprolactam is primarily required to produce polyamide 6 and is further processed in the company’s own polymerization facility, which is integrated on-site, to produce the high-tech engineering plastics under the brand names DOMAMID® and TECHNYL®. DOMAMID is primarily used as a base polymer for engineering plastics, textiles and film applications. TECHNYL is the leading polyamide-based compound for a variety of industry segments such as automotive, electricals & electronics and industry & consumer goods.

“The success is a team effort: this excellence in operation and production is only possible because the corresponding production volumes were also achieved in the upstream and downstream process stages of the value chain,” said Luc de Raedt, Site director, Leuna. DOMO employs a total of around 620 people at its Leuna site.

Ecowipes Grows Tricell Capacity With Second Trützschler/Voith CP Line

Typical CP line

EGELSBACH, Germany — March 21, 2022 — The first Carded/Pulp line at Ecowipes is a constant success due to surging end product demand from international markets. To spur the company’s growth Trützschler Nonwovens and Voith will supply the second CP Line to the Polish producer.

The carded/pulp technology by Trützschler and Voith delivers both performance and top-quality products. Voith’s BlueLine stock preparation equipment and cylinder mould FloatLip former processes paper-grade pulp, the cost-effective raw material for the paper industry. It delivers an extremely homogeneous wet-laid web. The NCT high-speed card, supplied by Trützschler Nonwovens, lays a light-weight layer of viscose or lyocell fibers on top of it. This configuration allows for a precise layering and an efficient dewatering. Trützschler’s AquaJet entangles both layers into an inseparable composite nonwoven with superior functionality. A multi-drum dryer and a powerful winder complete the production line which allows for productions speeds up to 300 m/min.

Construction at Ecowipes

Ecowipes recipe for success is a market high pulp content in the wipe material thus bringing down production costs significantly. For optimising its production processes, Ecowipes relies on digital solutions delivered especially for the old and the new Trützschler/Voith line.

Gabriel Kermiche puts it this way: “Trützschler and Ecowipes walked a long way together. When Voith and Trützschler came up with its industrial-scale CP technology a couple of years ago, we took the risk — and it paid. Even faster than we thought. Our CP products are in high demand in Poland, in Europe and even overseas. Based on that technology and with our own in-house process innovations we have developed our patented Tricell substrate.”

TAYA Launches KAVALAN Moonlight River Textile Banner That Eliminates Textile Washing Process

TAIWAN — March 22, 2022 — TAYA Groups continues on its mission to mitigate the impact of banner materials on the planet, this time turning attention to the growing global water crisis with the creation of KAVALAN Moonlight River. TAYA is addressing water-intensive textile signage banners by substantially reducing water use in the polyester production process through the elimination of the dyeing stage, and is launching today to mark World Water Day, March 22nd. Moonlight River is a replacement textile signage banner that eliminates the washing process, thereby reducing its overall freshwater usage by 67 percent.

River’s incredible eco performance is a result of four years close cooperation between TAYA and its suppliers. Following successful field trials, TAYA has once again worked with testing and analysis organization SGS to assess the water use for Moonlight River and verify its claims of water reduction, in much the same way that it conducted Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) on KAVALAN’s range of PVC-free products to accurately quantify each product’s impact on the environment.

Vincent Lin, vice president, TAYA Groups, commented: “The launch of Moonlight River is the next natural evolutionary step as we continue to demonstrate that high-quality banner materials do not, and should not, have to come at the expense of the planet. With the daunting prospect of available freshwater reserves running out by 2040, dramatically, reducing the water usage of signage banners is an urgent priority”.

“At TAYA, we have been working tirelessly with our suppliers to revolutionise textile signage banner with the development of a polyester yarn that removes the dyeing process while keeping all the strength, durability and LCA impact reductions expected of a Kavalan product. Following a great deal of innovation, perseverance and rigorous testing, we have created an outstanding and substantially greener product that we are excited to share with the world.”
