Furniture Maker Vanguard Furniture To Invest Nearly $6 Million In Morganton, N.C.

RALEIGH, N.C. — April 26, 2022 — Vanguard Furniture Company Inc., a North Carolina-based furniture manufacturer, plans to add 100 new jobs in Burke County, Governor Roy Cooper announced today. The company will invest more than $5.9 million for an expansion of its upholstery manufacturing operations to Morganton, N.C.

“North Carolina continues to be the global leader for furniture manufacturing,” said Governor Cooper. “Vanguard’s decision to expand in our state affirms that our quality of life and skilled workforce can provide a thriving business climate that brings success.”

Headquartered in Conover, N.C., Vanguard Furniture is a manufacturer and marketer of high-end case goods and upholstery. It is a family-held company, employing 680 associates operating out of seven manufacturing facilities in Conover, N.C., and Hillsville, Va., and flagship showrooms showroom in High Point, N.C., and Las Vegas. Its mission is to lead home furnishings in style, value, and service with a vision to enrich lives through custom-crafted furniture. The expansion into Morganton will be the company’s eighth manufacturing facility focused on case goods, finishing, and upholstery manufacturing with warehouse and distribution operations.

“This plant has a rich history and is an ideal footprint for making custom furniture. The building is on one level, has high ceilings and will allow Vanguard to efficiently warehouse materials and ship finished furniture,” said Andy Bray, president of Vanguard Furniture. “We selected Morganton because the local community has hundreds of generational craftsmen with sawdust in their blood. In fact, many of our best artisans and craftsmen currently make the 30-mile trip to our Conover headquarters every day and are thrilled at the prospect of not having to commute as far. This is a classic win-win. We create jobs and with expanded capacity and shortened lead-times for our dealers and their customers.”

“With the largest furniture manufacturing industry and workforce in the United States, North Carolina is a confident choice for Vanguard,” said N.C. Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders. “When we combine being first in furniture with being first in talent, North Carolina will continue to maintain its reputation as the furniture capital of the world.”

The salaries for the new jobs will vary by position, but altogether, the average annual salary is $42,536, exceeding Burke County’s overall average annual wage of $39,499. The new jobs have the potential to create an annual payroll impact of more than $4.2 million for the region.

A performance-based grant of $250,000 from the One North Carolina Fund will help with Vanguard’s expansion in North Carolina. The One NC Fund provides financial assistance to local governments to help attract economic investment and to create jobs. Companies receive no money upfront and must meet job creation and capital investment targets to qualify for payment. All One NC grants require matching participation from local governments and any award is contingent upon that condition being met.

“When growing companies expand in North Carolina, it sends a strong signal to other companies that our state is the best place to do business,” said N.C. Senator Warren Daniel. “We are grateful for Vanguard’s increased investment which is a win for our community and the entire state.”

“We are excited to welcome Vanguard and these new jobs to Burke County,” said N.C. Representative Hugh Blackwell. “Our skilled workforce and furniture making legacy will support the company’s growth strategy to meet the increased demand of the home furnishings industry.”

In addition to the N.C. Department of Commerce and the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, other key partners in the project include the North Carolina General Assembly, North Carolina Community College System, Western Piedmont Community College, Western Piedmont Council of Governments, Burke County, Burke Development, Inc., and City of Morganton.

Chinese Authorities Raid Warehouse And Seize Counterfeit Belts With Intelligence From Amazon And Salvatore Ferragamo

SEATTLE — April 26, 2022 — Today, Amazon.com Inc. (Amazon), announced that its Counterfeit Crimes Unit (CCU) worked closely with Salvatore Ferragamo S.p.A. to report a counterfeiter of Ferragamo’s iconic Gancini belt to the Market Supervision and Administration (MSA) authorities located in Yiwu City, Zhejiang Province, China. Following an investigation by the MSA and Amazon’s CCU, officials raided the criminal’s warehouse, seizing hundreds of counterfeit belts and buckle accessories that may otherwise have been sold through retail channels around the world. Amazon and Ferragamo will continue to assist law enforcement in investigating counterfeiters and preventing their products from entering the global supply chain, to help stop this illicit trade at the source.

“Amazon is grateful for the collaboration from Ferragamo and the MSA in protecting customers from these counterfeit products,” said Kebharu Smith, head of Amazon’s Counterfeit Crimes Unit. “This should serve as a reminder that bad actors will be held accountable, as Amazon collaborates with both brands and law enforcement agencies around the world to stop inauthentic products from being sold across the retail industry.”

The case originates from a worldwide investigative effort against certain bad actors, which Amazon and Ferragamo identified as trying to sell in Amazon’s store. In February 2021, Amazon and Ferragamo jointly filed two lawsuits in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington and allege the defendants conspired to use Ferragamo’s registered trademarks, without authorization, to deceive customers about the authenticity and origin of the products and the affiliation with Ferragamo.

Over the years, Salvatore Ferragamo has implemented a series of offline and online anti-counterfeiting measures to protect its customers and its brand. Thanks to these actions, in 2021, more than 22,000 infringing products and pieces of illicit content were removed from social media platforms and more than 130,000 listings related to counterfeit products were identified and removed from marketplace service providers. In 2021, Salvatore Ferragamo also carried out regular controls on physical stores launching several in-and out-of-court administrative and criminal proceedings, with a specific focus on China. Thanks to the increasing cooperation from local authorities, almost 450,000 counterfeit products were seized worldwide.

Amazon strictly prohibits infringing and counterfeit products in its store and, in 2020, Amazon invested more than $700 million and employed more than 10,000 people to proactively protect its store from fraud, counterfeit, and abuse. Amazon uses industry-leading tools to verify potential sellers’ identities and ensure product listings are authentic, and Amazon’s proprietary systems analyze hundreds of unique data points to verify information provided by potential sellers. In 2020, only 6% of attempted new seller account registrations passed Amazon’s robust verification processes and listed products for sale. In addition, fewer than 0.01% of all products sold on Amazon received a counterfeit complaint from customers.

Amazon launched the CCU in 2020 to help hold counterfeiters accountable through the courts and law enforcement. This global team—which is made up of former federal prosecutors, former law enforcement agents, experienced investigators and data analysts—pursues targets around the globe. Amazon’s CCU supports law enforcement efforts to bring justice to those attempting to sell counterfeits to protect customers, brands, Amazon’s stores, and the retail industry.

Amazon has an extensive history of protecting brands and taking action to hold bad actors accountable:

  • Amazon and Weber File Joint Lawsuit Against Counterfeiters
  • Amazon Counterfeit Crimes Unit Reaches Settlement with Influencers Who Ran Social Media Counterfeiting Scheme
  • Amazon and GoPro File Joint Lawsuit Against Counterfeiters
  • Amazon and Asmodee File Joint Lawsuit Against Counterfeiters
  • Amazon and HanesBrands File Joint Lawsuits Against Infringers of Champion Trademarks
  • Amazon Published Comprehensive Brand Protection Report Demonstrating Progress Toward Driving Counterfeits to Zero

Technology, Innovation And Sustainability: Keys To The Textile Industry’s Future

TW Special Report

Italian textile machinery manufacturers play a major role in promoting new trends linked to green technologies in their manufacturing sector. The playing field on which the textile industry is hedging its competitive edge is environmental, economic and social sustainability. Regulations and new environmental legislation, also applied to the textile sector and urged on by environmental movements and precautionary policies on chemical safety standards for major brands, have accelerated the change in the entire textile supply chain, which is now more sensitive than ever to these issues.

Italy’s textile machinery manufacturers in the various textile manufacturing segments  — from spinning and knitting to weaving and finishing — now provide technology solutions capable of greatly reducing the emission of or use of hazardous substances in production processes and ensuring greater water savings along with improved energy efficiency in production processes.

Within this context, ACIMIT — the Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers — has launched the “Sustainable Technologies” project, coordinated by the RINA certification body, in an effort to develop and promote key sustainability issues for the textile industry. The gold standard of the “Sustainable Technologies” project is the Green Label — a voluntary declaration by Italian textile machinery manufacturers designed to highlight the energy and/or environmental performance of a given machine, calculated in reference to a production cycle defined by the manufacturer for labeled machinery.

The purpose of the Green Label is to identify and easily communicate the energy and environmental performance of a textile machine with reference to a process chosen by the manufacturer as a comparison parameter. Thus, in the absence of internationally recognized standards for classifying energy and/or environmental performance for textile machinery, Italian manufacturers are promoting a tool that aims to highlight some machinery performance data. Awareness of achievements in technological excellence, including in terms of sustainability, is one of the Italian textile machinery sector’s elements of strength, placing it at the forefront of sustainable technological solutions to support the textile industry. In particular, the quantity of equivalent emissions of carbon dioxide — Carbon Footprint – CFP — produced during the machinery’s operation, is the parameter chosen to provide a value to the eco-efficiency of the labeled machinery.

RINA, an Italy-based international certification body, has validated the process of issuing the Green Label and its test measurements. On the basis of a standardized and certified procedure, RINA verifies both the way in which parameters are measured, and the operating conditions of the machines being labeled. At the end of the on-site audits, RINA issues a certificate of conformity that certifies compliance with the regulation by member companies and the truthfulness of the performance data of Green Label certifications issued.

To promote the genesis of the Green Label, ACIMIT — in collaboration with the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) — will participate in the 2022 edition of Techtextil North America in Atlanta, with an Italian Pavilion hosting 17 Italian companies. During the event, ACIMIT and ITA representatives will be available to provide more information regarding the project. If you attend the show, be sure to stop by booth 2133, 2233 and 2333 to discover more.
