National Cotton Council (NCC) Welcomes USDA’s Climate-Smart Pilot Projects

MEMPHIS, Tenn.  — September 14, 2022 — National Cotton Council Chairman Ted Schneider said the U.S. cotton industry applauds USDA for promoting sustainable farming practices through its Partnership for Climate-Smart Commodities — including the new Climate Smart Cotton Program led by the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol.

The Louisiana producer stated that, “The U.S. cotton industry is committed to sustainability and to protecting the environment. The $90 million of funding allocated to the U.S. Climate Smart Cotton Program is a historic investment that will further enhance our industry’s voluntary environmental stewardship efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, soil loss and water and energy use, while increasing land efficiency and soil carbon.”

He said this project announced today will provide technical and financial assistance to more than 1,000 U.S. cotton producers, including historically underserved cotton producers, to advance adoption of climate smart practices such as no-till, cover crops and nutrient management on more than a million acres, producing more than four million bales of Climate Smart Cotton over five years.

Schneider said the new project will be led by the industry’s three-year old sustainability initiative — the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol® — a voluntary program where its American cotton producer participants “commit to providing sustainably-grown cotton to not only meet the needs of brands and retailers in the fashion and textile industries but ultimately protect and preserve our planet.”

The Climate Smart Cotton Program is a collaborative effort with Cotton Incorporated and the NCC’s export promotion arm, Cotton Council International; the Soil Health Institute; the Soil and Water Outcomes Fund; Alabama A&M University; North Carolina A&T University; Texas A&M University’s AgriLife Research; and Agricenter International in Memphis. The NCC also is grateful for Target’s support of the project through cost-share funding.

AACHEN, Germany — September 8, 2022 — Ulrich Reifenhäuser, CSO of the Reifenhäuser Group, was awarded the prestigious Georg Menges Prize 2022 at the 31st International Colloquium on Plastics Technology in Aachen held September 7-8, 2022. The prize recognizes individuals or groups who have rendered outstanding services to the transfer of research results into industrial practice. The sponsors of the award are the Plastics and Rubber section of Germany’s Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA), together with PlasticsEurope Deutschland and the Association of Sponsors of the Institute for Plastics Processing (IKV) in Industry and Craft at RWTH University. The award is traditionally presented every two years during the colloquium organized by the IKV. Ulrich Reifenhäuser is the first businessman to receive the Georg Menges Award.

The award was presented by Professor Dr.-Ing. Christian Hopmann, Director of the IKV and Dr.-Ing. Herbert Müller, Chairman of the Board of the IKV Sponsors’ Association. In his laudatory speech, Professor Hopmann highlighted Ulrich Reifenhäuser’s great and successful commitment to the industry and his tireless search for optimal solutions that are sustainable in the best sense of the word, and praised him as a personality of integrity and integration. “The Georg Menges Prize is awarded for the consistent implementation of research and innovation in industry. The previously described achievements of our prizewinner would certainly have been enough to receive the award but, for the sponsors of the Prize, what was especially important and the key argument for their decision was Ulrich Reifenhäuser’s honorary dedication to the K tradefair,” explained Professor Hopmann.

Ulrich Reifenhäuser has been a member of the Reifenhäuser Group management since 1992 and is responsible for international line sales. Together with his brother Bernd Reifenhäuser, he manages the company in the third generation. Ulrich Reifenhäuser has been a board member of the VDMA Plastics and Rubber Machinery Association for more than 25 years and has been its chairman since 2010. During this time, he has built up an international network that is second to none. In 2020, he was inducted into the Plastics Hall of Fame, as was the award’s namesake, and in 2022 he will be co-chairing the world’s leading plastics trade fair in Düsseldorf for the seventh time in a row as “President of K show.”

“This award and the recognition by the organizations behind it mean a lot to me,” said Ulrich Reifenhäuser. “My passion for plastics has always motivated me to promote the importance and benefits of this material worldwide. New Pantone Color Inspired By The Oldest Pigment, Encourages Us All To Design A Nature Positive Future

VANCOUVER — September 13, 2022 — The Pantone Color Institute (PCI) announced today a collaboration with luxury tea blenders, TEALEAVES, alongside other organizations and NGOs on an impactful partnership and awareness campaign to educate people and call attention to biodiversity loss through a novel Pantone color release, called the “Pantone Color of Biodiversity”.

According to UN Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) report, three-quarters of the land on earth has been altered by human actions, and about a million species are under the threat of extinction. If biodiversity loss continues at this rate, it will undermine progress made in 80 percent of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Yet, the issue of biodiversity loss is not well understood.

That is why as the first day of the 2022 meeting of the UN General Assembly convenes, Pantone and TEALEAVES partnered to create the Pantone Color of Biodiversity in support of United Nations Biodiversity, World Biodiversity Forum, and the 30×30 initiative to protect at least 30 percent of the world’s land and oceans by 2030.

The Pantone Color of Biodiversity, a bright pink hue, calls attention to the variety of species and ecosystems that underpin the health of the planet and viability of life, and the alarming rate at which we are losing them. The color represents the evolution of biodiversity and aims to bring awareness to biodiversity loss, a rising global environmental threat. The Pantone Color of Biodiversity has brought together a creative collective of businesses, such as the New York Botanical Garden and the Frye Art Museum, NGOs, and climate passionate individuals to create nature positive (preservative & regenerative) solutions.

“We approached our color selection for the PANTONE Color of Biodiversity by circling back to a color emblematic of the oldest pigment on earth which was discovered in 1.1-billion-year-old marine sedimentary rocks of the Taoudeni Basin in Mauritania, West Africa by Dr. Nur Gueneili”, said Laurie Pressman, vice president, Pantone Color Institute.  “We thought turning to the Sahara, a location considered as one of the most ancient places on earth as our inspiration can help highlight what was found in the earth before it was inhabited, and humans had the opportunity to sully the environment’s natural resources.

“The bright pink pigments are the molecular fossils of chlorophyll that were produced by ancient photosynthetic organisms inhabiting an ancient ocean that has long since vanished.” said Dr. Gueneli from the ANU Research School of Earth Sciences.

In addition to their work with NGOs and organizations for Pantone Color of Biodiversity, the partnership with TEALEAVES’ and Pantone spans several years, as they continue to be committed to efforts to protect the global ecosystem. TEALEAVES’ work towards biodiversity solutions through biodiversity positive design with leading designers and have released several documentaries on environmental topics. Additionally, they work closely with botanical gardens to support their work, and through their products create social impact blends, as well as a home-compostable tea bag line.

Pantone adds the Color of Biodiversity to their list of environmentally focused color messaging campaigns and partnerships alongside Adobe Stock, and The Ocean Agency Glowing, Glowing, Gone which was created to bring attention to global warming and the loss of coral reefs, Lacoste’s FOREVERGLADES relating to the preservation of the Everglades and Lavazza’s VANISHING COLOR which highlighted the impact of deforestation.

The AATCC Interest Groups will kick off the meetings on Monday, November 14, with an impressive list of speakers.  On Tuesday, AATCC will hold a dedication ceremony renaming the Library in honor of past Executive Vice President, John “Jack” Daniels. Throughout the week, there will be opportunities to reconnect and participate with the committees in providing standards development and industry guidance.

The LYCRA Company Promotes Recent Innovations At Dornbirn Global Fiber Congress

“LYCRA® Anti-Slip fiber for High-Performance Wovens,“ is being presented in Hall A on September 14 at 2:20 p.m. CEST by Nicholas Kurland, senior R&D scientist, at The LYCRA Co. Seam slippage can affect garment quality and aesthetics and is one of the biggest technical problems in stretch denim. It can also lead to consumer dissatisfaction and product returns.

“In our ongoing efforts to help improve denim quality and solve pain points, we developed LYCRA Anti-Slip fiber to reduce the puckering caused by seam slippage — especially after washing,” Kurland said. “At the heart of this patent-pending solution is a unique filament structure and proprietary chemical composition that is engineered to increase the adhesive and frictional force between the surrounding fiber and LYCRA fiber.”

The LYCRA Company’s sustainability director, Jean Hegedus, is presenting a lecture on “Scaling Recycled Fibers from Textile Waste.” She will discuss developing and commercializing two groundbreaking specialty polyester fibers launched in 2021: COOLMAX® and THERMOLITE® EcoMade technologies made from 100-percent textile waste. The presentation is part of a panel that will be moderated by Dr. Alberto Ceria, senior applications development professional for The LYCRA Co. It will take place in Hall B on September 15 at 11:20 a.m.

“COOLMAX and THERMOLITE EcoMade technologies are made from 100-percent pre-consumer textile waste collected from cutting room floors,” Hegedus said. “These cooling and warming fibers help address the issue of textile waste, significantly reduce environmental impact, and help set the stage for circularity in the future.”

Ascend Bringing New Materials To Battery Show — Will Feature Its New Flame-Retardant Nylons

HOUSTON — September 13, 2022 — At The Battery Show North America, Ascend Performance Materials will feature its new flame-retardant nylons for EV safety applications and its Trinohex® Ultra electrolyte additive, which improves lithium-ion battery safety, extends cycle life and boosts performance.

Safer, higher-performance battery chemistry

Ascend, a fully integrated producer of performance materials, will showcase its Trinohex Ultra electrolyte additive; now REACH-registered in Europe and China.

In third-party testing, Trinohex Ultra demonstrates superior cathode protection across cathode and electrolyte chemistries. This protection has been shown to reduce harmful gas generation, improve capacity retention and lower impedance growth, especially in extreme conditions.

“Battery safety, performance, cost and material availability are the biggest obstacles to mass adoption of e-mobility and renewable energies,” said Mr. McNeece. “Trinohex Ultra is a drop-in solution to these challenges and can be easily integrated into existing battery chemistries and manufacturing processes.”

High-voltage safety

Ascend will also debut two new polyamide technologies in its Starflam® FR portfolio: X-Protect and color-stable orange.

Starflam X-Protect is a crosslinkable, flame-retardant nylon 6,6 designed to withstand EV battery thermal runaway. Tested in accordance with SAE AS5127 (a test originally designed for aerospace applications), Starflam X-Protect was rated fireproof to 1100°C for 15 minutes.

“In open-flame tests, Starflam X-protect outperforms standard FR nylon and even aluminum,” said Ian van Duijvenboode, Ascend’s e-mobility director. “In the event of a catastrophic battery failure, that added protection provides the time needed to ensure all passengers remain safe.”

Additionally, Ascend has developed a color-stable orange for its Starflam 525K for high-voltage connectors and cables. The new orange masterbatch ensures the material retains its color over 5,000 hours of heat aging without sacrificing performance.

“As EVs become more prevalent and age, the technicians and first responders working on these vehicles need to know where high-voltage systems are,” said Mr. van Duijvenboode. “Our orange will stay orange well into the operational life of the vehicle, clearly indicating areas of high-voltage.”

HEATHCOAT FABRICS To Install BRÜCKNER Finishing Line For Industrial Textiles

LEONBERG, Germany — September 13, 2022 — Heathcoat Fabrics partnered again with BRÜCKNER Textile Technologies and its sales partner Advanced Dyeing Solutions to install a state of the art Brückner finishing line for industrial textiles. Heathcoat Fabrics is at the leading edge of textile engineering. It has a proud heritage spanning over two centuries and is a global market-leading technical textile manufacturer with internationally recognized expertise in texturizing, weaving and warp knitting as well as dyeing and finishing. Heathcoat’s highly specialist products are manufactured for use in the automotive, healthcare, defense, and aerospace industries, to name a few, contributing to some of the most innovative fabric-making projects in the world.

Brückner worked extensively with the local Heathcoat project team during several project reviews to develop a customized multipurpose finishing line, designed especially for the needs of Heathcoat fabrics. The requirements were the treatment of light weight parachute fabric, but also heavy duty conveyor belt carriers as well as 3D warp knits and stretch sensitive microfiber fabrics, where even a human skin contact could create picking issues.

The direct gas heated Brückner POWER-FRAME tenter with its unique staggered heating source arrangement every half zone provides best available temperature consistency across the length and the width of the tenter. The unit is equipped with a low-lub, horizontally returning combined pin/clip chain and several fabric paths, especially designed for the different fabrics being processed. Together with Heathcoat Fabrics technologists, the Brückner design team developed a very special delivery end of the tenter with different edge trimming and slitting possibilities. Depending on the kind of products, the fabrics can be batched on large diameter A-frames, wound on cardboard tubes or plaited into trolleys.

Due to the complexity of the fabrics, the tenter is equipped with the newest weft straightening and pick counting technology. The control system allows integration into the customers ERP system and enables easy and reproducible operation by using the latest bar code scanning and batch related quality reporting tools. Due to the increasing energy prices, it is mandatory that the machine is equipped with the state of the art Brückner heat-recovery technology.

Cameron Harvie, Heathcoat’s managing director says: „We are very happy with the work and dedication of the whole Brückner team. This includes particularly the Brückner technicians. Since the installation of the line started with the Covid Lockdown, the Brückner technician had to sleep in a camper in our parking lot for several weeks.
