Carrington Textiles To Showcase Latest Military Textile Innovations In The Middle East

ADLINGTON, England — February 6, 2023 — Global Textile manufacturer Carrington Textiles is set for its first appearance at the International Defence Exhibition (IDEX), taking place in Abu Dhabi in February, where the company will be unveiling some of its latest innovations in military textiles.

After announcing its development of a fabric and pattern in collaboration with the Dutch Ministry of Defence, Carrington Textiles is showcasing a brand-new product as part of its Defence Range. The new Spartan HT Flex Lite fabric is a lightweight textile that features military grade INVISTA T420 nylon 6.6 staple fibre to be light yet strong. It offers integrated stretch properties thanks to its LYCRA® composition, and the comfort of cotton.

The company has also revealed the launch of its new camouflage print concept called Night Stealth Camo, created for military special operations carried out in the dark. Night Stealth Camo incorporates infrared signatures of printed camouflages when viewed under night vision devices, but in normal daylight appears as a black dyed fabric.

New Faces At Polygiene As Brand Continues Its Expansion In The United States

NCTO Welcomes Vice President Harris’ Announcement Of $585 Million In New Textile And Apparel Investments And Sourcing Commitments In Central America

WASHINGTON — February 6, 2023 — The National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO), representing the full spectrum of the U.S. textile industry from fibers through finished sewn products, welcomed Vice President Kamala Harris’ announcement of $585 million in new textile and apparel investments and sourcing commitments in Central America today.

“Over the past year, well over $1 billion of new textile and apparel investments have been announced in Central America and the United States,” said NCTO President and CEO Kim Glas.  “The $585 million of investments and sourcing commitments announced today in the region will continue to build on the strong momentum of growth of nearshoring and onshoring these critical supply chains.”

The investments and sourcing commitments announced today continue to build on the robust textile and apparel co-production chain between the U.S. and Central America,” said NCTO President and CEO Kim Glas. “We sincerely appreciate the administration’s commitment to this critical manufacturing sector that has contributed to the backbone of economic development in Central America and the United States. And we look forward to working with our retail and brand partners to continue to expand our vital manufacturing sector.”

Over the last year, substantial investments have been flowing into Central America, predicated on the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR) and the co-production chain that facilitates $15.1 billion in two-way textile and apparel trade and supports more than one million workers in the U.S. and the region.

“We saw apparel imports largely containing U.S. textile inputs from the CAFTA-DR region jump 24 percent according to the latest government trade data and we have seen well over $1 billion in investments in the region,” Glas said.

Several NCTO members previously joined the Vice President last year to announce their investments and sourcing commitments, including Parkdale Mills, Unifi, and SanMar.

“These are just a few of the key investments in the region, which illustrates how this co-production chain is continuing to make sustainable investments that strengthen supply chain resilience, create job opportunities and investment in the U.S. and the region, and ensure transparency in our supply chains, as momentum grows for onshoring and nearshoring textile and apparel production,” Glas said. “That is a win-win for our industry and the region.”

NatureWorks Celebrates Construction Milestone For New Fully Integrated Ingeo™ PLA Biopolymer Manufacturing Facility In Thailand

PLYMOUTH, Minn. — February 2, 2023 — NatureWorks, a manufacturer of low-carbon polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymers made from renewable resources, hosted a cornerstone laying ceremony to celebrate construction of its new Ingeo™ PLA manufacturing complex in Thailand. The ceremony which took place on February 1, 2023 commemorated the progress made to date on the new fully integrated biopolymer facility. The day also featured a ceremonial groundbreaking that mirrored the ceremony held in Blair, Neb., in 2000 when NatureWorks began construction on the world’s first commercial scale PLA manufacturing facility.

The new manufacturing facility located on the Nakhon Sawan Biocomplex (NBC) in Nakhon Sawan Province, Thailand is designed to be fully integrated including production sites for lactic acid, lactide, and polymer. With completion expected in the second half of 2024, the manufacturing site will have an annual capacity of 75,000 tons and will produce the full portfolio of Ingeo biopolymer grades.

“This ceremony is a meaningful milestone for the entire NatureWorks team,” said Rich Altice, president and CEO of NatureWorks. “For the last three decades, we have not only been building a company and manufacturing facilities, but also a whole new industry and market for low-carbon, renewable biomaterials that are revolutionizing the sustainability and safety of packaging and product materials used in our everyday lives.”

Site preparation for the new biopolymer complex was completed in June 2022, and early-works construction for piling, underground piping, storm water management, and tank foundations began. In November 2022, NatureWorks announced the selection of the TTCL Public Co, Ltd. as the general contractor for the project.

The expanded global production of Ingeo biopolymer will support growth in markets including 3D printing and hygiene as well as compostable coffee capsules, tea bags, flexible packaging, and food serviceware that demand sustainable, low-carbon biomaterials and require the high-performance attributes that Ingeo is uniquely suited to deliver.

The Symmetry Makes The Difference — Symm-Net À La Chantilly For Clothing

OBERTSHAUSEN, Germany — February 2, 2023 — With clarity and balance in mind, KARL MAYER’s textile specialists have developed a lace last year that is characterized by an extremely precise and distinct appearance. The intricate look is created by a filigree pattern and the utmost symmetry of the design elements. Accordingly, the name of this innovation is Symm-Net.

Counter-lapping pattern for more clarity

The new MJ 92/1 B multibar jacquard raschel machine is used to produce Symm-Net. Equipped with a split threaded jacquard bar, this newcomer can work both equal- and counter-lapped patterns, and also has two ground bars at the back operating counter-lapped to complete the symmetry. The possibilities of this set-up were exploited in initial samples last year, where Symm-Net was launched in an elastomeric galloon targeted at lingerie. Here a counter-lapping jacquard movement combined with the two counter-lapped elastane bars created a successful symmetry. Several of the newcomer machines have already been ordered to date.

Rigid Symm-net patterns with fine jacquard structures

Just in time for the start of the year, KARL MAYER pushed ahead with its Symm-Net developments. Lace expert Jamie Heather created a rigid cross-band galloon for outerwear, relying on a delicate Chantilly-style design. “The advantages of Symm-net are particularly evident in designs with small holes and fine mesh structures,” explains the expert. Lightweight lace and in particular Chantilly stylings are now growing in demand, sums up Jamie Heather after his visit to Interfilière in Paris in January. Many manufacturers showed complex designs, clip patterns and classic Chantilly looks in new ways at the leading trade fair. Fine designs incorporating metallic yarns were especially popular.

For the new Symm-Net lace, Jamie Heather has used typical Chantilly yarns – polyamide and 15% cotton for the gimps. The Lace is made as a cross band flounce on the MJ 92/1 B. This means the lace is delivered in three meter strips and is separated by hand. “The fabrics show how symmetrical Chantilly can be, and symmetry is Symm-Net’s strength,” says the lace expert, explaining his design approach.

Further developments are underway

The new rigid Symm-Net patterns bring pizzazz to garments such as collars, cuffs or inserts, and also attracted attention at Interfilière. “The customers to whom I showed the lace were immediately struck by the visual clarity of the fine mesh structures,” says Jamie Heather.

Encouraged by the positive response, he is already working on further Symm-Net developments, including several clip patterns.

Marine Fabricators Association Announces Marine Fabrication Excellence Award Winners

ROSEVILLE, Minn. — February 2, 2023 — Sponsored by the Marine Fabricators Association (MFA), the Fabrication Excellence Awards contest is designed to recognize excellence in marine fabrication. The entries are judged by a panel of certified marine professionals. Awards of Excellence and Outstanding Achievement Awards are given in each category.

Winners were selected based on complexity, design, workmanship, uniqueness and function. Recipients of the “Award of Excellence”, “Outstanding Achievement Award” and “Award of Distinction” were also all recognized at the conference. Winning projects will receive recognition in press releases, features in Marine Fabricator magazine, an award plaque and permission to use the Fabrication Excellence winning logo in business and promotional pieces.

For this year’s competition, the MFA received a total of 91 entries from marine fabricators in 10 categories including; powerboat soft and rigid enclosures, hybrid enclosures, transformations (before and after), sailboat dodgers and biminis, travel covers, tops, interior and exterior upholstery and uniquely different. Judges included industry experts and certified professionals.

The Marine Fabrication Excellence Awards competition is sponsored by the Advanced Textiles Association (ATA), a not-for-profit trade association with more than 1,600 member companies representing the international specialty fabrics and technical textiles marketplace.
