MMT® Celebrates 20 Years of Moisture Management Testing

ROCK HILL, S.C.  — June 20, 2023 — SDL Atlas is proud to be celebrating the 20th anniversary of one of it’s signature instruments, the MMT Moisture Management Tester.

Developed in 2003, the MMT measures the liquid management properties of performance, technical and nonwoven fabrics by simultaneously measuring the liquid transport through a fabric and on both faces.

One 2-minute test gives a comprehensive profile of a fabric’s performance, producing the following:

  • Overall Moisture Management Capability;
  • Accumulative One-Way Transport Capability;
  • Wetting Time for top and bottom surfaces;
  • Absorption Rate for top and bottom surfaces;
  • Max Wetted Radius for top and bottom surfaces; and
  • Spreading Speed for top and bottom surfaces.

In 2009, AATCC Committee RA63 developed Test Method 195: Liquid Moisture Management Properties of Textile Fabrics, which specifically cited the MMT as the Apparatus for performing the test method. This same year, GB/T 21655.2: Textiles — Evaluation of absorption and quick-drying — Part 2 — Method for moisture management tests was also developed using the MMT. These test methods have been the benchmarks for the measurement, evaluation and classification of liquid moisture management properties of textile fabrics since.

The MMT underwent a makeover in 2014. The new open design with a metal housing not only looked more stylish, but allowed greater access to the test area and making routine cleaning of the test sensors easier. A new motorized upper sensor and sample positioning light made the test procedure simpler as well.

In 2020, the Stretch Fabric Fixture was introduced to allow for testing elastic fabrics, particularly those used in athletic clothing, swimwear and undergarments, on the MMT. The fixture allows the percentage of stretch to be easily adjusted to the user’s requirements (up to 50% stretch). Once the percentage of stretch is set, the sample is clamped into place with a Clamping Ring, removed from the fixture and placed directly onto the MMT’s test area for moisture management testing.

Today, the MMT is trusted by hundreds of textile and nonwoven customers worldwide to perform their moisture management testing.

“While the MMT has been around for 20 years, it is still considered an innovative test instrument, the standard for moisture management testing in fact,” said Chuck Lane, president of SDL Atlas. “The measurements that the MMT performs goes far beyond basic wicking, giving our customers the confidence needed to design products to meet the exact needs of their end users.”

Committed to providing customers confidence in standard based testing, SDL Atlas has offices and experts in the United States, United Kingdom, Hong Kong and China, plus agents serving over 100 countries, SDL Atlas is ready to support its customers with instruments, test materials, and services anywhere in the world.

Material Exchange Launches Their Deadstock Depot Marketplace

STOCKHOLM, Sweden — June 20, 2023 — Once swept under the rug by the fashion industry, deadstock fabrics and their use in apparel and footwear lines are quickly growing in popularity. These excess materials have traditionally been stacked and forgotten on warehouse shelves — but they’re now presenting a win-win scenario: for brands looking to reach new sustainability goals or add last-minute items to their collections, and for suppliers eager to showcase these materials and cash in on what otherwise goes to waste. Bridging the gap between these two groups has been the challenge — until now with the launch of our Deadstock Depot.

“The Deadstock Depot makes it easy for brands to find deadstock materials and take advantage of the many benefits they bring,” says Ben Felton, Material Exchange’s chief strategy officer. “This includes lower cost, lower environmental impact, and faster speed to market.  For suppliers, it’s also a big win, giving them an opportunity to get materials that are gathering dust in their warehouses back into circulation.”

The need for sustainable measures within the fashion industry is acute, as can be seen in some of the latest statistics:

  • “Since the 2000s, fashion production has doubled and it will likely triple by 2050, according to the American Chemical Society”
  • 92 million metric tons of unwanted fabrics are disposed of each year
  • 14.5 million tons of textiles were landfilled and incinerated in 2018

More clothes are being made than ever before — and huge quantities of them are going to landfills or being burned. This is why the use of deadstock is so important. These leftover fabrics have already been produced so there’s no expenditure of water, energy, or virgin raw materials to create something new. And with the Deadstock Depot, they’re available and accessible on a global level for brands to use in creating their upcoming collections.

Suppliers who sign up for the Deadstock Depot benefit from having their deadstock fabrics digitized and marketed both online and at physical shows. Brands who are interested in sourcing deadstock can access everything they need within this marketplace: high-quality visuals of deadstock materials alongside detailed attribute data, Fabric Detail Sheets, Internal Test Reports, as well as the ability to order samples.

Through the Deadstock Depot, we aim to reduce the quantity of materials that go to waste each year and help contribute to making fashion a more circular, sustainable industry. Brands benefit from sourcing materials at a lower cost and receiving their materials faster than when ordering new ones. Suppliers increase their revenue flows from what’s previously been a commodity to dispose of.

Using deadstock doesn’t solve all of fashion’s sustainability problems, but it’s a step in the right direction. We just need to make these fabrics available to the brands that want them. And that’s exactly what the Deadstock Depot is doing.
