Alcantara Is Increasing Its Use Of Recycled Materials

MILAN — November 9, 2022 — Alcantara plans to increase the use of recycled post-consumer polymers in its luxury “Made in Italy” material for the fashion, consumer-electronics and automotive industries, according to the company’s annual sustainability report.

Alcantara Chairman and CEO Andrea Boragno said the company is introducing new material with greater proportions of recycled polymers that could lead to products that rely solely on recycled material within the next three to five years.

The new material is certified to be from 68 percent post-consumer recycled polyester produced in Europe and covered by the RCS (Recycled Claim Standard). The recycled polymers are obtained from waste material to prevent plastic from being sent to landfills, incinerated or discharged into the ocean.

A corporate leader in the implementation of environmental initiatives, Alcantara was certified as Carbon Neutral in 2009. It is the first Italian industrial company and one of the world’s first companies to achieve Carbon Neutrality status.

Alcantara’s recently issued sustainability report (https://sustainabilityreport.alcantara.com/ ) notes that its offset emissions amounted to 42,461 tons of CO₂ emissions during the last fiscal year.

Over the past 13 years Alcantara has supported 50 offset projects, including programs involving wind power, solar and hydroelectric in countries such as India, Turkey and Uganda.

The company also was able to avoid 15,272 tons in CO₂ emissions thanks to trigeneration and cogeneration systems in place at its facilities in Italy.

“Sustainability is the most critical issue of our times,” Boragno says. “That’s why it is a core value deeply rooted in our corporate culture and an important growth driver of our business strategy development.”

He adds that Alcantara is a member of the United Nations Global Compact and is committed to advancing the United Nations sustainable development goals.

Alcantara’s cradle to grave approach involves the measurement of all CO₂ emissions at every stage of its product life cycle from raw materials and production processes up to the product’s use and end-of-life.

Today the company also provides its automotive customers with specially customized products developed by its Complex Manufacturing Department at Alcantara’s production plant in Nera Montoro, Italy. The department provides uniquely branded and customized seating, headliners, floor mats and other products for companies such as Lamborghini, Ford, Maserati, McLaren, Jaguar and Alfa Romeo.

Alcantara, a “Made in Italy” lifestyle brand, was founded in 1972. Today Alcantara® can be found on leading brands in a variety of fields, including the auto industry, the world of fashion and accessories, interior design, home decor and consumer- electronics.

Organic Cotton Accelerator (OCA) Launches A Best Practice Training Curriculum To Benefit The Organic Cotton Sector

AMSTERDAM — November 10, 2022 — The Organic Cotton Accelerator (OCA), the multi-stakeholder organisation dedicated to organic cotton, today announced the publication of the Organic Cotton Training Curriculum, a standardised Training of Trainers curriculum on organic agronomic best practices. Developed with FiBL (The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture) as the research partner, in consultation with OCA, its Implementing Partners and field teams, and other local experts, the curriculum will ensure robust training of trainers and the optimum transfer of knowledge to organic cotton farmers.

Public launch of the training curriculum

The newly launched curriculum is the first training package designed for organic cotton growers in over a decade. It includes in-depth modules and accompanying activity guides on a breadth of topics from seed to harvest. Supported by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the curriculum will complement existing training materials.

The Organic Cotton Training Curriculum is publicly available via the OCA website to benefit the entire organic cotton sector and beyond. OCA has additionally invested in a Learning Management System Platform to support virtual training and easy access to the materials, directly online or via a mobile app, for field staff of its Implementing Partners. The curriculum has already been launched on the ground, during the initial roll out in the summer of 2022, at OCA’s train-the-trainer sessions. As a result, hundreds of field staff from Implementing Partners and Farm Groups across the different regions of India have been trained up.

Impact through collaboration

‘This is a curriculum for all our dedicated field staff who deliver round- the- year training and advisory support to the in-conversion and certified organic farmers across many states in India. It is unique in that it consolidates the most relevant topics and challenges that our field staff and farmers face on a day-to-day basis on crop management practices from the seed selection stage to post- harvest management. We are encouraged by the positive reception at field-level when the curriculum was piloted this summer. This is a key resource and milestone for OCA’s Programmes and the sector at large, and we are looking forward to building it out with further tools and including other geographies in the near future.’ Shankhamala Sen, Senior Programme Officer at OCA.

‘The Organic Cotton Training Curriculum is designed to reduce the gaps between scientific and practitioner communities. The curriculum will help develop the cotton-growing community’s capacities to produce more sustainably and work as a catalyst to fast-track the system’s transformation toward resilience.’ Dr. Amritbir Riar, Deputy leader of the Department of International Cooperation, FiBL

‘This initiative is the first step towards enriching the skilled extension workers in each corner of the country. The curriculum is unique in that it has specific characteristics like; flexible in time and location, easily accessible, and a single click takes you into the world of knowledge. In the long term, this platform will be expanded with leading farmers and community leaders.’ Hetal Shah, Director at Amiha Agro, India

More local adaptations planned for 2023

While the curriculum is available in English and Hindi for the initial roll out across India, OCA will further work on translations to local languages and adapt the modules for Pakistan, where the organisation has recently started its Farm Programme. More geographies will follow.

OCA and FIBL plan to regularly update and improve the modules, activity guides and curriculum guidelines using feedback from farmers, field staff, farm groups and other experts to ensure the latest advancements and innovations in agronomic practices are captured in the curriculum.

OCA invites all organisations within the organic and sustainable cotton sector to use the materials to drive change on the ground, giving in-conversion and existing organic cotton farmers the skills to ultimately become more resilient and self-sufficient while optimizing the potential of their land and crops.

Chargeurs PCC Launches Zero-Water Rainbow Collection Of Sustainable Knitted Interlinings

PARIS — November 10, 2022 — Chargeurs PCC, the world’s largest apparel interlinings manufacturer, today announced the launch of the Zero-Water Rainbow Collection of sustainable knitted interlinings. The collection of ultralight inner components is available in 15 colors, in addition to white, natural and off-white, all dyed through a proprietary waterless process that minimizes environmental impact.

The Zero-Water Rainbow Collection offers the lightest interlinings for couturiers and luxury brands that use the most luxurious and lightweight fabrics to create garments. Delicate and sheer items require silky, soft interlinings that provide flexible structure, durability and adhesion while remaining nearly invisible, so as not to detract from the color of the outer fabric. The collection is available in a wide range of sustainable colors to ensure designers’ creations drape perfectly and wear well, with no perceptible difference in the color of materials used to construct different layers of garments.

“We’ve leveraged our expertise to create a revolutionary dyeing process that uses absolutely no water as part of our commitment to sustainability through innovation,” said Gianluca Tanzi, CEO of Chargeurs Textile. “The Zero-Water Rainbow Collection of sustainable interlinings offer the flexibility and improved adhesion the world’s top couturiers demand in a wide range of colors to match nearly any fabric.”

The traditional dyeing process is one of the most water-intensive and polluting parts of fashion production. According to the UN, the fashion industry produces 20% of all wastewater and textile dyeing is the second-largest source of water pollution globally. Most of this wastewater is returned untreated to the environment, where chemicals from dyes can harm human, animal and plant life.

To address this issue, Chargeurs PCC designed and engineered a proprietary waterless dyeing process that involves dyeing the adhesive material used in interlinings rather than the fabric itself. The Zero- Water Rainbow Collection is available in very small order quantities with fast delivery, eliminating overproduction and the need for fashion brands to purchase material than they actually need just to meet minimum order requirements.

The Zero-Water Rainbow Collection is manufactured at Chargeurs’ century-old, fully integrated Lainièr de Picardie factory outside Paris, under the supervision of the company’s textile and chemical experts.

First Of Its Kind Commercial Scale Recycled Textile Mill Opens In Sweden

SUNDSVALL, Sweden — November 10, 2022 — Today, as world leaders gather in Egypt to discuss how to decarbonize supply chains in time to stabilize our climate, the world’s first commercial-scale textile-to-textile pulp mill held its official opening in Sundsvall, Sweden. ‘Renewcell 1’ is the first of a new generation of climate-friendly mills that shift viscose production from being a linear extractive supply chain, with significant impact on the world’s forests, biodiversity, and climate, to low-impact, circular production. he first-of-its-kind facility will repurpose over 120,000 metric tonnes of textile waste next year, otherwise destined for landfills, and turn it into new viscose for fashion.

As the global effort to combat climate change and environmental degradation accelerates there is a growing need to make fashion circular and preserve critical forest ecosystems. Over 200 million trees, many from the world’s most vital forests, are currently cut down every year to make fabrics like viscose and rayon. Renewcell’s new mill uses textile waste rather than trees to make these fabrics, sourcing from worn-out jeans and production scraps.

“We’re delighted to be the first mill in the world that is dedicated to circular manufacturing for the viscose fashion sector,” said Patrik Lundström, CEO of Renewcell. “It hasn’t always been easy but the commissioning of this facility marks the dawn of a new circular era for global fashion.”

Strong market demand has played a key role in Renewcell coming to market at scale. Through Canopy’s work in the fashion sector, more than 500 fashion brands, designers, and retailers are committed to prioritizing the use of Next Generation Solutions, including viscose made from old textiles and agricultural residues, along with not sourcing from Ancient and Endangered Forests. Clear market signals of support and offtake agreements from brands and conventional viscose producers helped Renewcell unlock their financing for this first commercial-scale facility.

“As we strive to turn around the climate and biodiversity crises, we need dozens of these low-impact mills to replace unsustainable forest-based viscose production,” said Nicole Rycroft, Executive Director of Canopy. “Renewcell, their investors and off-takers have stepped up to make this first Next Gen mill a reality. We’re excited to continue to work with the marketplace and financiers to transform this supply chain at a pace and scale that’s proportional to the ecological requirements of our time.”

It is estimated that over 90 million tonnes of apparel waste accumulate in landfills each year — the equivalent in weight to 18 Great Pyramids. Using recycled waste textiles to make viscose rather than forest fibre saves up to 15 tonnes of CO2e per tonne of product.
