industrial grade heat transfer bonders that it claims improves productivity by 50 percent and
ensures precision placement.

The new line includes two single bonders and a high-speed roll-fed bonder, which all feature
adjustable controls for the regulation of pressure, time and heat parameters. The bonders also are
easy to use, ruggedly constructed and designed for reliable operation, according to Avery Dennison.

Belgian Laminator Installs Web Processing Line

Vandeputte-Avitex, a commission
laminating operation in Belgium, has installed a hot melt/combined polyurethane laminating line
from Web Processing (M/C) Ltd., an England-based manufacturer of specialty textile machinery.

“I was surprised and delighted at the speed of installation and commissioning of the line,”
said Ivan Vandeputte, title (have sent email). “It was in operation only two days after its arrival
at our factory here in Ingelmunster. The smooth start up and the manufacture of production
materials already has impressed me, and I am sure I will fill this machine to capacity very soon.
This line gives me an additional technique to complement my existing production facility and the
ability to produce an even more diverse range of laminations at much higher speeds.”

Vandeputte-Avitex is using the line — designed for both long runs and discontinuous
operation — to produce laminates of fabrics, films, foils, knitwear, Lycra®, nonwovens, paper,
polyurea and other foams; and a variety of open-structure fabrics. The line features a roll face
measuring 2.8 meters wide and an operating speed of up to 50 meters per minute. It is capable of
batching materials up to 2 meters in diameter from three unwind positions. The line’s design
enables the optimum amount of tension to be applied to processed materials during adhesive
application and lamination, according to Web Processing.

Griva Implements Alien® RFID Fabric-Tracking System

Italy-based Griva S.p.A., a
manufacturer of finished fabrics for drapery and upholstery applications, recently installed and
implemented the Alien® radio frequency identification (RFID) reader and tag system — the world’s
first EPC-compliant roll-tracking application — from Alien Technology Corp., Morgan Hill, Calif.,
in partnership with Italy-based RFID tracking and data collection systems developer Simet. As a
result, Griva reports it has realized a 30-percent return on investment in the form of increased
fabric roll traceability and time savings.

Using Alien’s 8800 ultra-high frequency passive reader/writer and electronic product
code-compliant Gen 2 Squiggle® tags, Griva now is able to trace a fabric roll from the start of the
production process through shipment, rather than relying on traditional bar code technology,
ensuring each roll undergoes the correct treatments and processes.

US Army Develops Clothing And Equipment Sizing Program

In an effort to reduce sizing
shortfalls and overages in combat clothing and equipment, as well as related expenses, the US Army
Materiel Command has launched the Uniform System for Improved Tariffs (USFIT), a three-phase
program to install 3-D whole-body scanners at army installations with a large concentration of
troops. The scanners will accurately record the shape of a soldier’s body and clothing size.

Clothing size will be programmed into a USFIT database, and the 3-D scan and associated data
will be archived in the US Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center
Integrated Database for Engineering Anthropometry of Soldiers (IDEAS). Using the USFIT database,
the Army will be able to order uniforms and equipment based on current requirements, resulting in
potentially reducing overbuys by 50 percent, reducing expenses associated with returning unused
items, and reducing inventory storage costs. The IDEAS database will provide size information to
material developers for current and future clothing and equipment requirements.

The first phase of the program included the development of size prediction algorithms for
select uniforms and pieces of equipment and the scanning and fit testing of approximately 4,700
soldiers. The second phase will place scanners at 24 Army facilities, while the third phase will
include distribution of head and foot scanners for sizing masks and footwear.

Dow Reichhold, SSI Enter Development, Marketing Partnership

Research Triangle Park, N.C.-based
specialty latex manufacturer Dow Reichhold Specialty Latex LLC has entered into a partnership with
Sustainable Solutions Inc. (SSI), a Wagoner, Okla.-based developer of materials using
post-industrial as fresh raw materials, to develop and market efforts products that use regenerated
leather and other post-industrial waste.

The partnership involves SSI’s SmartStreams™ system that processes manufacturing waste for
use in such applications as furniture upholstery and automotive seating; and Dow Reichhold’s
refinement of the process through advanced latex binder chemistry and its access to development
resources.

“SSI, with our support, is showing manufacturers that good environmental stewardship can be
very profitable,” said Galen Hatfield, vice president, development, Dow Reichhold. “Together, we
are developing products from post-industrial waste streams that are of the same — or better —
quality as those produced via traditional processes. It is an exciting endeavor and we are happy to
be working with an industry leader like SSI to bring these products to market.”

The companies have already produced three branded products: Dilusso™, a leather-like
composite rollgood produced from sustainable materials and regenerated leather; Thermold™, a
nonwoven with thermo-molding properties, is targeted to replace traditional plastics; and
UrbanWood™, made from shipping pallets and other materials to serve as an alternative to
medium-density fiberboard.
