Toray to Start Automobile Airbag Nylon Fiber and Fabric Business in Mexico

CHUO-KU, Tokyo — July 28, 2016 — Toray Industries Inc. announced today that it has decided to start an automobile airbag nylon fiber and fabric business at its Mexico-based subsidiary Toray Advanced Textile Mexico, S.A.de C.V. (TAMX) headquarters, which was established in El Salto, Jalisco, in August 2015. TAMX will introduce production facilities with annual production capacity of about 10,000 tons of nylon fibers for airbags and airbag materials by investing approximately 10 billion yen within the Mexican plant premise of Zoltek Companies Inc., a large tow carbon fiber production subsidiary of Toray.

TAMX’s production facilities are expected to start operations in March 2018. Mexico has been rapidly growing as an automobile production base by leveraging the wide-ranging free trade network and geographical proximity to the United States. Recently, a number of airbag manufactures launch their businesses in Mexico, and the demand for airbag fabrics in the Americas is expected to continue growing significantly primarily in Mexico.

The establishment of the new production base in Mexico is in response to such growing demand and to strengthen Toray’s local supply capability by building an integrated production system from yarn to fabric in Americas, which is one of the most prominent airbag fabric market in the world, and capture the robust demand for airbag fabric around the world including Asia and Europe. Currently, Toray supplies nylon fibers produced in Japan and Thailand to its airbag fabric production bases in Japan, Thailand, China and Czech in its integrated production system from yarns to fabric around the world. Toray has been continuously working on the expansion of its production and sales structure such as a launch of airbag fabric production in India in October 2016 etc. Adding Mexico to this structure will further reinforce the global production structure enabling Toray to supply airbag fabric of the same quality from all production sites in a timely manner.

It will also accelerate Toray’s business expansion by utilizing its development capability with the integrated production covering from yarns to fabric, and Toray aims to acquire the largest share in the global airbag fabric market in 2020. As part of the basic strategy to continuously expand profits under the current medium-term management program Project AP-G 2016, Toray has been pursuing the Asia, America and Emerging Country Business Expansion (AE-II) Project to actively strengthen the organic cooperation among the Toray Group business bases, develop new markets and expand businesses. Toray positions the automobile airbag business as one of these priority businesses and aims to further expand it globally.

What Makes ComfortMax So Revolutionary
Down is an excellent natural insulator with outstanding warmth-to-weight ratios, temperature regulation and breathability. Down clusters function by trapping air for breathable warmth, but it also traps the moisture vapor produced by your body. As your body heats up humidity starts to build-up, reducing your body’s ability to evaporate moisture and causing you to start to feel overheated and uncomfortable.

ComfortMax down powered by 37.5 technology increases the transportation of perspiration vapor that comes off of skin during activity, preventing it from becoming trapped within your body’s microclimate to minimize overheating and keep you in a zone of comfort.

“With ComfortMax, down we see an incredible opportunity for a new generation of performance down products that goes significantly beyond consumers’ expectations for all things comfort,” said Crawford.

“Working on this innovative new development with the PCF team has been a joy,” said Jeff Bowman, CEO of Cocona Inc.  “It is rewarding to work with a company that loves their customers and is committed to providing them real technology with actual comfort and performance benefits, not just marketing hype.”

Signature Surface Area, Natural Fit

ComfortMax powered by 37.5 Technology forms an amazing natural blend. Permanently embedded into 37.5 fibers are millions of microporous particles, which forms the cavernous surface area, signature to the performance of 37.5 technology. It’s the technology’s unique design which locks into the structure of a down cluster, making it supportive of fill power, hand feel, breathability, and resiliency like no other.

Manufacturing and Sourcing
ComfortMax uses Pacific Coast® Down highly regarded for its Hyperclean® process, a proprietary standard for purity and cleanliness. Patented, 37.5 technology is made with naturally derived materials so there are no harsh chemicals to irritate your skin. Performance is permanent, and won’t wash out.

Dongheng Group Invests In High-Volume Digital Textile Printing With A PIKE® Printer From SPGPrints

BOXMEER, the Netherlands — August 1, 2016 – SPGPrints announces the sale of a six-colour PIKE® digital textile printer to the Dongheng Group, in Changzhou, Jiangsu province near Shanghai, China.

The Dongheng Group (DHG) is a commission (contract) textile printing and dyeing company supplying the fashion industry. With more than 600 employees, the company has a range of rotary screen and digital printing equipment.

DHG wanted to expand its digital capabilities for a variety of reasons. First, it needed to offer greater service flexibility, meeting customer demands for both high-quality, short runs and faster lead-times.

Waste and environmental factors also influenced the decision to install the Pike: with no need for screen preparation, minimal substrate waste, and lower water and energy usage, the Pike met DHG’s requirements.

Print quality was the third major consideration, and Pike’s Archer® technology delivers sharp, variable drop sizes (2pL – 10pL) at resolutions of up to 1200 x 1200dpi. This enables the production of sharp geometric designs, vibrant blotches, fine lines and smooth gradations. These capabilities are ideal for DHG’s plan to use the PIKE to print cotton-based fabrics with reactive inks.

Next, high productivity with lower running costs were among DHG’s priorities. With a print width of 1850 mm, and an annual output of up to 13 million metres, the PIKE also offered a lower cost per square metre, offering benefits to the group and its customers.

Finally, as an existing customer, DHG valued SPGPrints’ global support, knowledge of the textile market and experience of both conventional and digital textile printing.

“We have been working with SPGPrints for the last four years in our digital textile department,” said Stanley Shi, General Manager, Dongheng. “Their inks as well as their professional team and support have been of great value to our company and our position in the market. They are always available when you need them.”

“With the Pike single-pass printer, SPGPrints definitely showed their capacity to develop next-generation machines with excellent quality and lowest printing costs,” Shi added.

The PIKE printer is scheduled for installation in Jiangsu in Q4 2016 with production beginning in Q1 2017.

While the cool, silky hand, ease of dyeing, and inherent lightness of CoolVisions dyeable polypropylene filament brings a new look and feel to performance fabrics, the addition of creora eco-soft spandex creates polypropylene-based stretch fabrics for activewear, competitive swimwear and intimate apparel.

creora eco-soft brings a better hand feel, improved whiteness, and superior dimensional stability to stretch fabrics. The low-heat settable spandex also results in better molding performance and less curling in the high-gauge knits preferred by today’s intimate apparel, competitive swimwear, and athletic brands.

“There is a trend for super quick-dry fabrics which is delivered by CoolVisions dyeable polypropylene fibers,” shared Ria Stern, creora spandex global marketing director. “We recommend the addition of creora eco-soft spandex to provide an additional level of comfort and fit, and have worked closely with FiberVisions to optimize the fabric development process combining their new CoolVisions dyeable polypropylene filament and creora eco-soft.”

“CoolVisions dyeable polypropylene fiber is among the lightest of all commercial fibers, with low moisture absorption and excellent moisture transport; making it ideal for fabrics worn next to the body,” concurred Susan Lynn, global sales and marketing manager CoolVisions dyeable polypropylene, and US marketing manager FiberVisions.

“In addition, polyolefin fibers such CoolVisions® polypropylene have the lowest carbon footprint of all synthetic fibers,” Lynn continued. “By pairing CoolVisions dyeable polypropylene fibers with low-heat settable creora eco-soft spandex, textile manufacturers can potentially reduce their CO2 emissions.

The co-developed fabrics will be on display at Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, August 3-6, at the CoolVisions® by FiberVisions booth 155-601; and at Hyosung Corp. booth 255-313.

CoolVisions dyeable polypropylene filament is produced in Thailand by parent company Indorama Ventures (IVL), and is also available from FiberVisions’ distributor, Reamou Co. Ltd., in Taiwan.
