KPMG And Textile Exchange Develop An SDG Roadmap For The Apparel, Retail And Textile Sector

LUBBOCK, Texas — September 13, 2018 — The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — a set of 17 universally agreed-upon goals addressing the top current environmental, social and economic issues — offer many business opportunities for companies while addressing critical operational risks, according to a new report produced by audit, tax and advisory firm KPMG LLP, in partnership with the non-profit organization, Textile Exchange, “Threading the Needle: Weaving the Sustainable Development Goals into the Textile, Retail and Apparel Industry.” Threading the Needle offers SDG guidance to apparel, retail and textile suppliers, brands and retailers on business considerations and opportunities for shared value, an SDG engagement model, best practices and multi-stakeholder initiatives, and considerations for top sourcing countries.

“Threading the Needle is an important first step in understanding how existing industry initiatives can advance the 2030 Agenda, including adoption of more sustainable fibers and materials, responsible production and circular business practices”, said La Rhea Pepper, the managing director of Textile Exchange.

”The report provides a roadmap for companies seeking to realize the SDGs in their own sector and value chain”, said Anita Whitehead, principal for KPMG’s Development and Exempt Organizations (DEO) practice in the United States. “The report aims to provide companies with guidance and information that will help prioritize their SDG focus where it can generate the most impact”.

These examples are intended to demonstrate the first steps that companies can take to integrate the SDGs into their core business and value chain.

American Start-up AlgiKnit Wins EUR 100,000 For Environmentally-Friendly ‘Seaweed Textile’

AMSTERDAM — September 13, 2018 — The New York-based start-up AlgiKnit won 100,000 euros in the Postcode Lottery Green Challenge 2018. During the final, 26-year-old Tessa Callaghan impressed the international jury with her environmentally-friendly seaweed textile, a kelp that is spun into yarn. In addition to AlgiKnit, LettUs Grow from the UK and AquaBattery from The Netherlands will take the same amount home. The first prize of 500,000 euros goes to the air bubble curtain developed by The Great Bubble Barrier from The Netherlands. The runner-up prize of 200,000 euros is for the textile recycle marketplace founded by Estonian start-up Reverse Resources. This brings the total prize pool of one of the biggest sustainability competitions in the world to 1 million euros. In addition to the prize money, all five finalists will receive six months of expert coaching to improve the likelihood of their businesses succeeding.

The American start-up AlgiKnit makes fibers from kelp that can be spun into yarn. By using biomaterials, AlgiKnit offers a solution that could transform the highly polluting textile industry into a circular economy. After having been used, this seaweed textile can serve as compost or animal feed. It also reduces the carbon footprint of the clothing industry, because no harmful fiber particles are lost during washing, such as is the case with polyester. The company is working on a prototype of a T-shirt and sneakers will be next.

First prize for The Great Bubble Barrier 

The jury has announced that Anne Marieke Eveleens (29) of The Great Bubble Barrier from The Netherlands is the winner and presented him/her with a check for 500,000 euros. The Great Bubble Barrier has developed an air bubble screen for use on riverbeds that catches plastic before it arrives at sea. Approximately 80 percent of the plastic floating in the oceans enters the sea via rivers. In order to tackle plastic soup, The Great Bubble Barrier sends high-pressure air through a perforated tube on the riverbed. This creates an air bubble curtain that blocks both the stream of plastic waste on the surface and the floating microparticles underwater. The plastic then floats to the waterfront along the air bubble curtain, where it is collected for recycling.

Record number of entries 

This year, a record number of 845 entrepreneurs from 100 countries submitted their sustainable business plans aimed at combating climate change. Last year, the Rwandan start-up EarthEnable won the 500,000 euros first prize with their sustainable alternative to cement.

125,000th KARL MAYER Machine Crowns A 50-Year Partnership With Dong-Jin Textile From The Sports Shoe Industry

Teijin Develops High-quality Silk Wool-like Polyester Material As A New Product For SOLOTEX Family

TOKYO, Japan — September 13, 2018 — Teijin Frontier Co. Ltd., the Teijin Group’s fiber and products converting company, announced today that it has developed a new material, a polyester material that achieves the look, texture, aesthetic appeal and comfort of hybrid silk wool for a wide range of medium-thickness apparel applications including jackets and bottoms, as a new product for SOLOTEX family.

Silk wool, a hybrid of silk and wool that came into use during the 1950s, is a high-function material noted for swelling, smoothness, softness, melange and dense colorings, a combination of properties not possible with synthetic materials until now.

The new Solotex material offers silk wool-like high-quality appearance, softness and smoothness, elegant gloss, and dense coloring.

To achieve the luxurious look and feel of natural silk wool, Teijin Frontier uses a multi-thickness structure to process straight polyester filament yarn, employing a proprietary higher-order thread-processing technology. The yarn is then blended with Solotex and finally undergoes post-dyeing processing. The new Solotex material realizes colorings with dense spots that are close to those of natural materials. It also eliminates the dry, rough touch of conventional wool-like materials and replicates the smoothness and high resiliency of wool.

Thanks to Solotex’s form stability and cushioning, the new Solotex material achieves easy-care property including washability and crease resistance, and other functions such as water-repelling and antifouling properties, that cannot be associated with natural silk wool, can be easily added.

Teijin Frontier will begin selling the new Solotex material within the current fiscal year, targeting annual sales of 100,000 meters by the fiscal year ending in March 2020.
