CORDURA® Brand Expands TrueLock™ Fiber Platform, Powered By INVISTA Solution Dyed Nylon (SDN) Technology For Enhanced Color Durability

WICHITA, Kan. — July 23, 2018 —  INVISTA’s CORDURA® brand launches new TrueLock™ brand to propel and underscore its commitment to best-in-class solution-dyed nylon (SDN) 6,6 fiber technology innovation and its commitment to developing the durable, eco-efficient fabric solutions of tomorrow. A new Wolf Gray color debut at Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, July 23-26, 2018,  leads the pack of the brand’s next generation of durable colors.

Cordura TrueLock fiber is created from INVISTA nylon 6,6 multi-filament fiber that is solution dyed, locking the color in at the molten polymer extrusion level to create deep, durable color throughout the entire fiber structure.

The announcement is a major milestone for Invista’s Camden, S.C., facility, which expanded last year to increase U.S. capacity of high-tenacity, specialty fibers for Cordura fabrics. The Camden investment has accelerated progress in the development of new SDN capabilities, which complement the facility’s existing high tenacity nylon 6,6 filament fiber manufacturing processes. Plans currently being put into action at Camden include expansion of the Cordura TrueLock filament product line to introduce additional standard colors and deniers, as well as the flexibility to work to smaller minimum order quantities and custom colorways.

MMI Textiles, a premier supplier and one-stop shop supplying fabric, webbing and elastics in the textile marketplace for more than 21 years, is the exclusive North American provider of fabrics and webbing made with the new Wolf Gray Cordura TrueLock fiber, now through December 2018. Solution-dyed Cordura TrueLock fiber is also available in six classic colors designed to not fade or diminish over time — Desert Sand, Tan, Coyote, Ranger Green, Camo Green and Black.

Cordura TrueLock fiber is a key component of the Cordura CaresSM initiative and aligns with Invista’s efforts to communicate its commitment to conserve resources, reduce emissions, protect the environment and increase the utility and durability of its products, with the end-goal of providing long-term value to its customers and society.

Since its launch in 2009, the Cordura Cares Program remains committed to supporting efforts that promote environmental, health and safety excellence and corporate citizenship. Anchored by its tagline “Sustainability Begins with Products that Last™,” the program pursues goals in four key pillars: responsible manufacturing, sustainable performance, enduring materials, and corporate citizenship.

The process of color encapsulation used in Cordura TrueLock fiber offers several environmental benefits such as reduced water and energy consumption*, and reduced dye and chemical usage in textile processing. The fiber also delivers additional tangible benefits, including:

  • Abrasion resistant color;
  • UV fade resistant color;
  • Inherent stain resistance;
  • Color that doesn’t bleed or crock;
  • Lot-to-lot color consistency/color uniformity;
  • Color consistency across different textile components (ex., fabric and webbing); and
  • Option for fiber with inherent Near-Infrared (NIR) capability.

“Throughout our 50-year journey, we’ve worked to establish a foundation built on durable and long-lasting fiber technologies, including our legacy of solution dyed, high-performance nylon 6,6 offerings,” said Cindy McNaull, global Cordura brand and marketing director. “As we advance on this journey, we continue to invest and expand our capabilities to include solutions that are not only durable, but step lighter on the path to sustainability. Our recent Camden facility expansion will allow us to provide enhanced nylon 6,6 fiber offerings with added performance and eco-efficiency benefits, opening our doors to the next generation of durable fabrics.”

Kelheim Fibres’ Viscose Speciality Fibre VILOFT® Receives Lighthouse Award From The Bavarian Environmental Cluster

KELHEIM, Germany — July 19, 2018 — The project “Bio-degradable wet toilet tissue with the viscose speciality fibre VILOFT®” from the Bavarian viscose fiber manufacturer Kelheim Fibres has been awarded the Lighthouse by the Bavarian Environmental Cluster.
 Moist toilet tissue made with Viloft short cut fibers disintegrates rapidly in the sewage system as a result of the fibres’ special cross section and can therefore be conveniently disposed of via the toilet. Since Viloft fibers consist of 100-percent cellulose, such wipes are completely biodegradable and do not pose a threat to either the waste water systems or the environment.

The Lighthouse award is presented annually by the Environmental Cluster of Bavaria to outstanding projects in the field of environmental technology that have already been implemented and that are commercially viable.
 “We have been working with solutions for flushable wet wipes for more than ten years. Over this period effective products have been developed and we are proud that our fibers support the waste water management industry and help to protect the environment. Besides the technical solution, one of the big challenges is to increase consumer awareness for this topic — this Lighthouse award is a valuable contribution toward this goal and we are proud of having been selected as a model project!”, says Matthew North, commercial director at Kelheim Fibres.

With OmniBloq™ Bolger & O’Hearn Ushers In Stormproof/Breathable™ — A Revolutionary, New Durable Water Repellent (DWR) Category

FALL RIVER, Mass. — July 19, 2018 — Bolger & O’Hearn has upped the ante for durable water repellent technologies.

Not all durable water repellent (DWR) technologies are created equal and with extreme weather on the rise, there are many days when rainproof just isn’t good enough.

In response, Bolger & O’Hearn has developed Stormproof/Breathable™ OmniBloq™, an advanced DWR technology engineered to keep apparel dry and consumers comfortable, even when exposed to pounding wind and rain.

The team from Bolger & O’Hearn will be at Summer Outdoor Retailer next week — July 23-25, 2018 — to meet and discuss how their new Stormproof/Breathable DWR technology can help brands develop stormproof performance apparel and gear for their consumers.

OmniBloq’s Stormproof/Breathable capabilities represent an entirely new DWR category for the performance industry. Simply put, Stormproof/Breathable garments have been engineered to deflect heavy, wind-driven rain, yet are lightweight and allow perspiration to evaporate.

Stormproof/Breathable OmniBloq easily meets or surpasses AATCC Rain Test 35-2013 and is ideal for all forms of performance apparel and gear including ski wear, hiking clothes, outer wear, tents, backpacks and more. Stormproof/Breathable fabrics treated with OmniBloq also get high marks on the industry’s rigorous Bundesmann water repellency test, maintaining the highest Bundesmann rating after 30-Plus minutes of a treated fabric being exposed to the equivalent impact of full force rain.

In addition to being highly effective, Stormproof/Breathable OmniBloq does not compromise fabric hand, garment design, or wearer comfort. Applied at the factory, this technology is also bluesign-approved, and products treated with OmniBloq are not only highly durable when laundered, but more easily recycled than laminates.

Federal-Mogul Powertrain’s CrushShield® 2448 Sleeving Offers Enhanced Crash and Abrasion Protection For Heavy-Duty Vehicle Applications

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — July 12, 2018 — Federal-Mogul Powertrain has launched its next generation textile sleeving for crash protection and impact resistance. Available for heavy-duty and light vehicle applications, CrushShield® 2448 features a new heat shrinkable design that absorbs and disperses energy during a crash, protecting sensitive vehicle components including air conditioning lines, fuel lines, hoses and high-voltage cables. The product also provides superior abrasion resistance, which prevents mechanical wear from nearby components that come into contact with each other. Federal-Mogul Powertrain will exhibit the new CrushShield 2448 sleeving, alongside many of its other products at the 2018 IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hanover (Booth C30/Hall 13, September 19-27).

“As heavy-duty engines continue to increase in complexity, so does the amount of tubing, hoses, cables and wiring components required to maintain effective vehicle operations,” said Gian Maria Olivetti, Chief Technology Officer, Federal-Mogul Powertrain. “As a global leader in the design of abrasion and crash technologies as well as innovative textiles, our Systems Protection CrushShield solutions have been proven in advanced testing to provide impact resistant, durable protection for components.”

CrushShield 2448 utilizes a high performance, multi-layer textile design that enables it to dissipate energy in a crash situation, while also providing excellent abrasion protection. Its innovative design has a shrink ratio up to 4:1 with a minimum shrink temperature of +140°C, enabling simple installation over large connectors, brackets and contours with sharp angles, delivering protection where it’s most needed on the application. The heat shrinking design also enables the sleeve to increase in density and toughness when fitted or “shrunk” around the component, maintaining its shape in extreme environments and preventing exposure of the protected products, further enhancing impact and abrasion resistance while increasing component durability.

“Ease of installation is truly the hallmark of CrushShield 2448’s design,” said Tammy Ebersole, Vice President and General Manager, Systems Protection, Federal-Mogul Powertrain. “When installed, this product will firmly grip onto the protected component, eliminating the need for additional fixation devices, reducing overall installation time and complexity for the customer.”

With its lightweight, shrinkable construction, CrushShield 2448 can also cover multiple diameter applications with the same product, thus reducing the need for additional customer part numbers.

Crash and Abrasion Testing

To better serve its customers throughout the world, Federal-Mogul engineers have developed specialized equipment and a proprietary test method to evaluate the impact resistance of protective sleeving over various components such as cables and tubing.  The test is highly customizable and can be varied or adjusted to replicate failure modes often seen in actual crash environments. Designed as a comparison test, it effectively demonstrates differences in a component that is unprotected and protected after an impact event.

Crash tests performed using CrushShield 2448 resulted in an increase in crash protection by more than 70-100 percent, depending on the application. The sleeve was tested using LV312-3 specifications and is classified as class E( >50J) on shielded cable and Class F (>75J) for unshielded cable. When tested for abrasion according to LV312-3 specifications, CrushShield far exceeded the highest abrasion category G (≥ 30,000 cycles).

CrushShield 2448 is currently in testing with several global OEMs.
