Spinnova Wins Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas Award

JYVÄSKYLÄ, Finland — April 8, 2019 — Spinnova’s sustainable fiber innovation has won a Fast Company’s annual World Changing Ideas Award. Spinnova was chosen the winner of the Experimental (New!) category award.

The winners of Fast Company’s 2019 World Changing Ideas Awards were announced today, honoring businesses, policies, projects, and concepts that offer innovative solutions to the issues facing humanity.

Now in its third year, the World Changing Ideas Award showcases 17 winners, more than 200 finalists, and more than 300 honorable mentions. A panel of eminent judges selected winners and finalists from a pool of more than 2,000 entries.

The Experimental (New!) category that Spinnova won is for concepts, prototypes, and just-launched ideas that have the potential to change how we think about an issue.

“We’re thrilled to see Spinnova make this remarkable list of innovative solutions. It’s important to give recognition to companies, whose purpose and business are based on sustainability. We work hard to scale up an innovation that global challenges like climate change desperately need,” comments Spinnova’s CEO Janne Poranen.

Spinnova develops a breakthrough method that can produce textile-ready fiber out of cellulose without a dissolving process and no harmful chemicals. The company has recently entered a piloting phase in the development. Spinnova recently completed its industrial scale pilot line in Finland, and will now start carrying out product development projects with brand partners. In practice, this means making prototypes of commercial textile products, where part or all of current materials will be replaced with Spinnova’s cellulose-based fiber.

Fast Company is a monthly American business magazine that focuses on technology, business and design. With a goal of awarding ingenuity and fostering innovation, Fast Company draws attention to ideas with great potential and helps them expand their reach to inspire more people to start working on solving the problems that affect us all.

The May print issue of the Fast Company showcasing the World Changing Ideas will be out on 16 April.

ITMA 2019 Exhibitor Preview: Nitta Industries Europe GmbH

DÜSSELDORF, Germany — April 8, 2019 — At this year’s ITMA, the leading international trade fair for textile machines which will be held in Barcelona, Nitta Industries Europe GmbH will present drive belts for use in textile manufacturing. The flat belts conform to the stringent requirements for textile applications and are particularly noteworthy for their high abrasion resistance and long service life even at high speeds.

The Polybelt range of flat belts are ideal for tangential drives and spinning machines, in particular for fast rotor spinning machines. The strong monofilament polyamide core used in the belts keep the belt length stable so the quality of the yarn is not compromised. The rubber with which the belts are covered exhibits high friction but is resistant to abrasion, allowing a long belt life combined with constant fast spindle speed. A full range of various cover layer materials is available for the respective application.

Nitta offers belts from the Polysprint range for ring spinning machines and other textile machines, tangential drives and machines with small pulley diameters and fast running speeds. The belts are made from materials such as thermoplastic polyurethane, nitrile rubber and elastic fabric and can be supplied with a wide range of different surface materials and structures.

In addition to industrial belting products for the textile industry, Nitta manufactures conveyor systems, thermoplastic hydraulic hoses and tubing, engineered rubber products, air filtration systems, industrial wipers and mechatronic sensor systems. These products are used in other industry sectors including logistics, paper processing and printing, banking automation, and textiles.

Nitta Industries Europe is headquartered in Düsseldorf, Germany, and has a fabrication center near Frankfurt, where belts, tubes and hoses are stocked and fabricated to customer specifications. In Alkmaar in the Netherlands, Nitta Corp. of Holland produces and supplies a full range of high quality conveyor belts up to 3 meters wide. Both companies are part of Nitta Corp., headquartered in Osaka, Japan, which was founded in 1885 as Japan’s first manufacturer of power transmission belts.

Nitta Industries Europe GmbH was established in 1991 and is based in Düsseldorf, Germany. It is part of Nitta Corp., headquartered in Osaka, Japan, which was founded in 1885 as Japan’s first manufacturer of power transmission belts. From early on, Nitta expanded its activities into other industrial products. Crothall Laundry Service Earns Hygienically Clean Certification For Maryland Location

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — April 5, 2019 — Crothall Laundry Services’ Belcamp, Md., facility is the company’s latest recipient of the Hygienically Clean Healthcare certification, reflecting its commitment to best management practices (BMPs) in laundering as verified by on-site inspection and its capability to produce hygienically clean textiles as quantified by ongoing microbial testing.

The certification confirms a laundry’s dedication to compliance and processing healthcare linens and garments using BMPs as described in its quality assurance documentation, a focal point for inspectors’ evaluation of critical control points minimize risk. The independent, third-party inspection must confirm essential evidence that:

  • Employees are properly trained and protected;
  • Managers understand legal requirements;
  • OSHA-compliant; and
  • Physical plant operates effectively.

In addition to the newest designee, Crothall’s other Hygienically Clean Healthcare certified facilities are located in Mobile, Ala.; (Coastal Laundry); Phoenix, Ariz.; La Mirada, Manteca and Ontario, Canada; Lakeland, Fla.; Augusta and Rome, Ga.; Wheeling (Chicago), Ill.; Madisonville, Ky.; Winston-Salem, N.C.; Lima, Ohio; Johnson City, Tenn.; and Milwaukee, Wis.

Certified facilities pass three rounds of outcome-based microbial testing, indicating that their processes are producing Hygienically Clean Healthcare linens and garments and diminished presence of yeast, mold and harmful bacteria. To maintain their certification, laundry plants must pass quarterly annual testing to ensure that as laundry conditions change, such as water quality, textile fabric composition and wash chemistry, laundered product quality is consistently maintained.

This process eliminates subjectivity by focusing on outcomes and results that verify textiles cleaned in these facilities meet appropriate hygienically clean standards and BMPs for hospitals, surgery centers, medical offices, nursing homes and other medical facilities.

Hygienically Clean Healthcare certification acknowledges laundries’ effectiveness in protecting healthcare operations through testing and inspections that scrutinize quality-control procedures in laundry operations related to the handling of textiles containing blood and other potentially infectious materials.

Certified laundries use processes, chemicals and BMPs acknowledged by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, American National Standards Institute and others. Introduced in 2012, Hygienically Clean Healthcare brought to North America the international cleanliness standards for healthcare linens and garments used worldwide by the Certification Association for Professional Textile Services and the European Committee for Standardization.

Objective experts in epidemiology, infection control, nursing and other healthcare professions work with TRSA launderers to ensure the certification continues to enforce the highest standards for producing clean healthcare textiles. With more than 100 years as the textile services industry’s leading business association, TRSA’s expertise in laundry BMP development is unmatched.

“Congratulations to Crothall on their certification,” said Joseph Ricci, TRSA president and CEO. “This achievement proves their dedication to building their customers’ confidence that their laundry takes every step possible to prevent human illness.”

Brand New Tampon Invention Wins IDEA Product Achievement Award

LONDON — April 5, 2019 — Reinventing a product as well-known as the tampon is a bold move. Add the taboo of menstruation and you have a serious challenge on your hands. But Callaly, the creators of the Tampliner® — an innovative combination of a tampon and pantyliner — have risen to that challenge, and the hard work is already paying off. The British company has just won an IDEA Product Achievement Award for the best new disposable product utilising engineered fabrics in the past three years. The win was presented by INDA, a global nonwovens fabric association, in Miami Beach, Fla., at its triennial global conference, which is attended by more than 7,000 industry professionals.

The news comes hot on the heels of Callaly’s INDA Hygienix Innovation Award win last October. In November 2018 the British startup also won a prestigious 1 million pound loan from Innovate UK, the UK government body that helps innovative businesses scale up and commercialise new technologies. And in March 2019 Callaly CEO Thang Vo-Ta was named one of only 10 “People’s Champions” in the annual Sunday Times Maserati 100 innovative entrepreneurs list — more evidence that Callaly is one to watch this year.

The Tampliner was originally invented by gynaecologist Alex Hooi and developed by Ewa Radziwon, a garment technologist with 10 years’ experience in the fashion industry. Alex made the first functioning Tampliner, and Ewa perfected and tested the design for five years prior to the product’s initial soft-launch in early 2018. Alex and Ewa were helped on their mission by co-founder Thang, who brought the first-of-its-kind product to mass market via a monthly subscription model. The Callaly team has since grown to 14 people, all passionate about providing better, more innovative products to people with periods and putting an end to common problems like leaking, inflexible buying options and a lack of quality organic cotton products on the market.

Callaly is a certified B Corp, meaning it’s committed to using business as a force for good. It has supplied over 100,000 period products to charities including Bloody Good Period and The Red Box Project, which work to eradicate period poverty and bust the menstruation taboo. In 2018 Callaly also donated more than 6 percent of sales to Days for Girls, an international charity that provides girls living in poverty with reusable period products. Through its marketing, communications and social media content, Callaly is playing a leading role in changing the conversation around periods, prompting open discussion and awareness, and demanding higher standards for femcare products across the board.

Speaking about the latest win, CEO and co-founder Thang Vo-Ta, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have won a second prestigious award within a matter of months. The first award last year was a fantastic achievement, so winning two is just a huge honor. We’d like to thank INDA and the industry professionals from over 600 companies who voted for us. Femcare products have traditionally been seen as a taboo topic of conversation, so every win for us also feels like a small step forward for people with periods.

“Innovation is at the heart of everything we do, and the positive feedback we’ve had from our customers shows that, by questioning the way things have been done before and inventing something better, we can make a real impact on people’s lives. We’re excited to see what the future holds when we launch our full product range this summer.”

INVISTA Shares Insights On Nylon 6,6 Value Chain Growth And Milestones For Its Key Adiponitrile Investments

WICHITA, Kan. — April 4, 2019 — At the Wood Mackenzie American Nylon Conference in Atlanta this week, INVISTA shared insights on the future growth of the nylon 6,6 value chain as well as updates on the company’s investments to bring additional adiponitrile (ADN) capacity to the market.

Eric Jones, managing director of commercial development for Invista, gave a presentation, “Supplying the Future of Nylon 6,6 Growth,” highlighting Invista’s perspective on the market and its strong commitment to the nylon 6,6 value chain. Jones also shared data on how the superior technical performance of nylon 6,6 will impact future growth in key sectors, including automotive, electrical and electronics applications.

“Invista is investing billions of dollars to bring its latest ADN technology online as soon as possible at its existing facilities in addition to the new China ADN plant — all to help us meet both the short- and long-term needs of our customers and the value chains we support,” said Jones.

Invista’s latest ADN technology brings improved product yields, reduced energy consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, enhanced process stability and reduced capital intensity, compared to existing technologies.

“As I shared in my presentation, we see the recent market tightness as a short-term imbalance resulting from increased demand and unforeseeable disruptions in the nylon 6,6 value chain,” said Jones. “We expect it will correct itself quickly through debottleneck work that we’re performing at our sites to add more capacity. In fact, with strong production from our Texas facilities in 2018, we are already seeing improvements in supply to the market.”
