Mayer & Cie. Improves Position In Turkey

Mayer & Cie’s Relanit 3.2 HS. In Turkey, the machine is synonymous with single jersey fabric.

Mayer & Cie. reports it has above average, increasing market share in Turkey

TW Special Report

In pandemic year 2020, circular knitting machine manufacturer Mayer & Cie. (MCT) has further improved its position in Turkey. The country continues to be one of the company’s strongest and most consistent sales markets. Even in difficult years, the manufacturer and its longstanding Turkish representative Mayer Mümessillik have achieved positive results. The reasons for this year’s success, as Mayer & Cie. sees it, are the transfer of production to locations close to Europe, Turkey’s state-of-the-art machinery and the increase in demand for comfortable clothing that is suitable as home office wear.

Turkish market is a growth market despite corona setback

“Compared to 2019, we anticipate a growth in the Turkish market even though the corona situation was a serious setback in the second quarter of 2020,” said Stefan Bühler, Mayer & Cie.’s regional sales manager for Turkey.

Mayer & Cie. got off to a strong start on the Bosporus in the first quarter of 2020 with additional positive effects until mid-March. This was due to a desire for production locations close to Europe. In the second quarter, during the lockdown, demand largely ground to a halt. Government measures helped to cushion the downturn.

Ahmet M. Öğretmen, general manager of MCT’s Turkish sales partner Mayer Mümessillik, noted: “In the second quarter, GDP was down by about 10 percent, so we got off lightly.”

Since July 2020, orders for Mayer & Cie. circular knitting machines have bounced back again. Ahmet M. Öğretmen sees an interplay of reasons for this recovery. The main reason, he said, is the low exchange rate of the Turkish lira, which has boosted exports of ready-made textiles. The Turkish daily Hürriyet reports, with reference to the Turkish state news agency, 11 percent year-on-year growth in August 2020. The most important export markets, the newspaper says, are Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain. Between them, they account for around half of exports totaling 1.27 billion euros. “This demand
must be fulfilled,” Öğretmen says. “That leads to investment in machinery by manufacturers.”

Relanit Is Synonymous With Single Jersey

The machines of choice for Turkish knitwear manufacturers are regularly Mayer & Cie. machines. The long-established German firm’s share of the Turkish market is substantially higher than in other markets. The manufacturer’s position is particularly strong in the market for plain single jersey fabrics, with the Relanit 3.2 HS being the machine of choice. It achieves an extraordinarily high level of productivity, especially in processing elastomer yarns. It also handles a wide range of yarns reliably.

Machine head of the D4 2.2 II, a very popular interlock machine by Mayer & Cie.

“Interlock Is Mayer & Cie.”

Mayer & Cie. is a specialist in the second major circular knitting discipline, rib and interlock fabrics. “Interlock is Mayer & Cie.,” says Ahmet M. Öğretmen, putting it in a nutshell. The machines used for double jersey fabrics are the OV 3.2 QCe, the D4 2.2 II and the D4 3.2 II. The OV 3.2 QCe knits interlock, 8-lock structures, spacers and fine gauge with 3.2 systems. The D4 2.2 II is another stalwart for rib, 8-lock and interlock. The 8-lock D4 3.2 II is the machine of choice for firms that want to manufacture structures such as piqué, Punto di Roma or thermal in addition to interlock.

Detailed view of a MBF 3.2. The machine producing three-thread fleece stands for comfortable home
office wear and has seen a further increase in popularity.

The MBF 3.2 is another top seller in Turkey. A three-thread fleece machine, it knits fabrics for sports and leisurewear such as hoodies and is very much in keeping with the trend in home office year 2020. “Comfortable clothing is circular knitted,” says Ahmet M. Öğretmen, “and we benefit from that of course.”

State-Of-The-Art Machine Parks Are In Turkey

Another advantage is the modernity of the Turkish machine park, which is doubly attractive in view of Turkey’s weak currency. “In the past 10 to 20 years there has been very heavy investment in high-quality machines,” said Mayer Mümessillik General Manager Öğretmen. “As a consequence we have the world’s youngest and most up-to-date production facilities.”

Combined with geographical proximity to the main export markets in Europe that should prove a growth driver in the years ahead — and keep demand for Mayer & Cie. machines brisk and high.

Governor Ivey Announces HomTex Inc. Plans Expansion Creating More Than 300 Jobs in Black Belt

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — November 23, 2020 — Governor Kay Ivey on Monday announced that HomTex Inc. received $10,572,100 in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) funds to expand operations to Selma to develop Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). A family-owned and certified minority-owned business headquartered in Cullman County, the new Dallas County manufacturing location will create 300 to 325 new jobs.

“HomTex has made Alabama proud by stepping up during the COVID-19 pandemic to shift their production to create critical PPE supplies,” Governor Ivey said. “Their ability to be flexible in order to remain operational is the exact intent of the CARES Act funds. I appreciate their commitment to the economy and Alabama workers by providing needed jobs in Dallas County and thank HomTex for being a great corporate partner with the state of Alabama.”

In a partnership with the state of Alabama and Wallace Community College in Selma, HomTex will establish an operation to produce General Purpose and FDA approved Level 1, 2 and 3 Surgical Masks and N95 masks. Wallace Community College will offer apprenticeship programs that will allow students to help make masks for their region and beyond.

“The coronavirus pandemic has clearly demonstrated that our country needs a dependable domestic production pipeline for PPE, and Cullman-based HomTex has stepped up to fill a  portion of that critical need,” said Greg Canfield, secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce. “With its expansion in Cullman and its new growth plans in Selma, HomTex is helping to make Alabama a U.S. hub for the production of PPE. In addition, the company’s new Selma operation will provide an economic boost for the Black Belt region and advance our strategic goal of providing opportunities in Alabama’s rural communities.”

HomTex, Inc. was founded in 1987 by Jerry Wootten in Vinemont and now has its headquarters in Cullman. In addition to its Vinemont and Cullman locations, HomTex has production and distribution facilities in Sylva, N.C.; Belton, S.C.; and Leoma, Tenn.

“We are very honored to be the recipient of COVID-19 Relief Funds from the state of Alabama,” President and CFO of HomTex Jeremy Wootten said. “This second operation will make HomTex one of the largest face masks manufacturers in the USA, and we are proud to be manufacturing these products in Cullman and Selma. We very much appreciate the support from Governor Ivey, the State Senators and everyone who made the factory in Selma a reality.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, HomTex shifted production at the Cullman plant from bed linens to disposable medical grade masks as well as reusable, washable cotton masks. The manufacturer of DreamFit sheets, HomTex sells directly to furniture and mattress stores as well as national retail chains, specialty stores, gift stores and E-commerce.

This fall, HomTex secured a contract to provide protective face masks to the federal agency responsible for the operation of the U.S. Capitol Complex in Washington, D.C.

Officials in Cullman and Dallas counties welcomed the company’s expansion plans.

“Through this pandemic, we have seen the need for bringing supply chain manufacturing back to America. The only way to make these expansions happen is by working together.  The partnerships that made this project a reality include: Governor Ivey and her cabinet; the Cullman-Selma partnership; the Economic Development Committee in the Senate working across the aisle; and, Wallace State Selma and Wallace State Hanceville working as one to provide training,” state Senator Garlan Gudger said. “Alabama is proving that partnerships are the key to creating a better future for our state and the nation.”

“I must first thank God for these 320 new jobs in the Black Belt of Alabama.  I am so appreciative of Governor’s Ivey’s decision and work to make this happen for the people of the Black Belt. It is a major step in our goal to help people help themselves out of poverty in Senator Singleton’s and my district,” state Senator Malika Sanders-Fortier said. “I am humbled by the bi-partisanship cooperation that made this all possible. This is how we build the Beloved Community. I believe this is a first step that can breathe new hope into the people of the Black Belt for much more economic development to come.”

Alabama received approximately $1.9 billion of federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) funding to respond to and mitigate COVID-19. Alabama Act 2020-199 designated up to $300 million of the Coronavirus Relief Fund to be used to support citizens, businesses, and non-profit and faith-based organizations of the state directly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Hanes Donates Nearly 1.3 Million Face Masks And Pairs Of Socks In 2020 To Support The Homeless During The COVID-19 Pandemic

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — November 24, 2020 — Imagine trying to protect yourself, your children, your family against COVID-19 while living without shelter or the basic necessities of life.

During 2020, Hanes has supported nearly 400 organizations fighting homelessness in all 50 states, along with Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. The brand has:

  • Donated more than 1 million masks, enabling those experiencing homelessness access to public resources and facilities while helping to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
  • Provided nearly 300,000 pairs of socks, which help keep feet clean, comfortable and healthy for people who walk an average of 10 miles per day. Since the program’s inception in 2009, Hanes has provided more than 3 million pairs of socks — one of the items relief agencies request most.
  • Partnered with Rainier Fruit Company for the third “Pears for Pairs” campaign — currently running in United Supermarkets, Harris Teeter and Wegmans locations across the country — on a program that donates a portion of the proceeds from bulk and bagged pear sales to purchase socks. In 2019, the campaign resulted in 25,000 pairs of socks being distributed to four nonprofits serving those living homeless.
  • Continued its 11-year partnership with Invisible People and its founder and homeless advocate, Mark Horvath, to distribute socks and raise awareness about homelessness in the United States and around the world.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has changed life for us all, but this year has been exceptionally rough for people experiencing homelessness,” Horvath said. “The economic impact and lack of affordable housing continues to significantly increase homeless numbers, while homeless shelters have had to reduce capacity and are faced with more need yet fewer resources to help.

And the outlook is grim as dropping temperatures and the flu season are added to the mix.

“Invisible People is proud to partner with Hanes to make a difference through product donations and by encouraging people to support their local homeless services,” he continued. “Now more than ever, our homeless population needs support — and there is something that everyone can do to help.”

The needs vary from community to community. For example, The Road Home in Salt Lake City is requesting hats, gloves and snow boots, while Roof Above in Charlotte, N.C., is asking for towels and blankets. Merideth Spriggs, founder and chief kindness officer for CARIDAD in Las Vegas, notes the importance of community support.

“Due to quarantine restrictions, the homeless are not able to get their basic needs met — they might not have a mask, they may not be able to get to water sources, or they might have a cup that they can’t refill because of the new restrictions,” Spriggs said. “Just be aware of that and if you see a homeless person, share the love. Giving them something as simple as a bottle of water can change, or, quite honestly, save somebody’s life.”

Sidney Falken, chief branding officer for HanesBrands, said: “We know that product donations are very meaningful to those experiencing homelessness, and we are honored to help. It takes all of us to help support our communities, and we urge everyone to try to do their part to make a difference.”

Tonello Presents THE Laser, A New Laser Line For Denim

SARCEDO, Italy — November 23, 2020 — The big turning point that the denim world has been waiting for has finally arrived: after a long period of research, refinement, and fine tuning, Tonello is launching THE Laser on the market, the range that is destined to represent the new benchmark for the entire sector.

THE Laser, the absolute Laser

A new software, a totally reinvented process. Design and quality finally together, to offer more productivity, flexibility, speed, accuracy, and repeatability.

Overall dimensions reduced by as much as a third; possibility of working a continuous cycle, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; incredible software performance and uncompromising quality: for combining technology and creativity, and pushing them beyond every limit.

These are just a few of THE Laser pluses, presented last Wednesday at the Tonello live-web event. THE Laser is much more than a new line of machines: it is another (R)evolution signed Tonello, a radical paradigm shift that will result in a better and more efficient way of working.

In other words, Tonello has reinvented the Laser, changed the rules of the game, and nothing will ever be the same again.

THE Laser, the range

Lab, Table, Table & Mannequin, Conveyor: these are the magnificent 4 components of the most complete Laser range ever, to meet all production, creative, and logistic needs.

THE Laser Lab: the most compact, smart, and cool laser in the range. It is characterized not only by its compactness, but also by its easy installation, maintenance, and handling, as well as by the options for it being placed in either shops or in production contexts, depending on the power and, therefore, the speed.

THE Laser Table: is the new Tonello proposal for table work.
Compact in its total volume, but with a larger work area, it is easy to use and allows you to operate either on the entire surface of the table, or alternating processes in two distinct areas. This allows fast, flexible, and alternating production of the garments.

THE Laser Table & Mannequin: radically changes the approach to “table + mannequin” technology. It integrates the innovative features of the Laser Table with the new oblique mannequin, which reduces the overall dimensions of the machine and allows for improved performance of the fully automatic and super-rapid change between the two working modes. The mannequin can also be marked at a full 360 degrees.

THE Laser Conveyor: machine for continuous processing on conveyor belt or traditional fixed table. It allows non-stop laser processing and garment unloading. Ideal for T-shirts and knitwear, it is also particularly flexible for laser cutting jeans.

Co-stars of the range are the absolute latest developments CREA and B.O.P.

CREA is a software conceived and developed by designers for designers, smart, intuitive, and user-friendly. Its infinite creative tools allow you to easily modify a design in an instant, directly “on the machine”, and to go directly to production.

B.O.P. or Be On Point, is a “one touch” automatic positioning system for design, which does not require particular operator accuracy or precision. This increases the quality and repeatability of marking, while significantly reducing execution times.

LyondellBasell Supports Sustained Need For Face Masks By Launching European MFR 1500 Grade

ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands —  November 24, 2020 — LyondellBasell — a plastics, chemicals and refining company — announced today the introduction of the new Moplen HP560Z, a Melt Flow Rate (MFR) 1500 grade for melt-blown nonwoven applications. The company reports it is the first to offer this type of high-fluidity polypropylene grade in Europe. The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged our societies around the world. The continued availability of medical and safety equipment, especially face masks, is still primordial to safeguard and protect communities. While the majority of MFR 1500 grades for melt-blown non-woven applications have so far mainly been produced in Asian countries, European demand has seen an increase with the growing number of regional production entities for protective equipment. A swift regional solution for a high-end medical grade was therefore needed.

In order to support this sustained high need for face masks and their local production in Europe, LyondellBasell has commercialized a new innovative polypropylene MFR 1500 grade, Moplen HP560Z. The very high fluidity of this grade allows the creation of face masks with the best filtration level providing the highest protection efficiency possible.
An additional advantage of the Moplen HP560Z grade is that it has been tailored specifically for the newest small-scale melt-blown non-woven machines, which are now widely used for face mask production in Europe.

“LyondellBasell is known for finding solutions to challenges it faces, and the rapid development of Moplen HP560Z is evidence of our ability to meet our customer’s needs in the European market,” says Jochem Meijknecht, marketing manager at LyondellBasell. “It is exciting to be the first company to offer a MFR 1500 grade made in Europe.”
