Kontoor Brands Expands Indigood™ Program to Include Additional Water Saving Technologies

GREENSBORO, N.C. — March 22, 2021 — In celebration of World Water Day, Kontoor Brands Inc. — a global lifestyle apparel company with a portfolio led by the Wrangler® and Lee® brands —today announced the expansion of its Indigood™ program, an initiative that targets water savings during the fabric construction phase of the apparel supply chain. Debuted in 2019 with the introduction of foam-dyed denim, the Indigood program has expanded to include any water savings technology in apparel fabric production that uses at least 90 percent less water than conventional fabric production.

“Water is one of our most vital and precious natural resources, and as such, we are focused on advancing the sustainable and equitable management of water resources,” said Jeff Frye, vice president of Product Development and Direct Procurement, Kontoor Brands. “By expanding the Indigood program to include additional water saving technologies, we’re giving our suppliers the opportunity to select the water savings technologies that work best for their production, while also meeting the growing consumer demand for products that not only look good, but also minimize the impact on the planet.”

Kontoor Brands produces millions of products globally each year, and has committed to using its global scale to advance the denim industry. Through the expansion of the Indigood program, Kontoor is encouraging denim mills across the globe to adopt radically different water saving technologies in the vein of indigo foam dye. Additional approved technologies include increased water recycling, advancements in the dyeing process and fabric finishing innovations. Kontoor works with independent third parties to validate Indigood claims, ensuring they meet the 90 percent threshold.

In 2020, Wrangler announced it had saved more than 7 billion liters of water in the finishing phase of denim manufacturing, exceeding its 2020 goal of saving 5.5 billion liters, and launched a new goal, to reduce its water usage by 50 percent by 2030. The Wrangler brand’s updated water goal targets the fiber production, fabric construction, and product finishing phases of the denim supply chain, which together encompass more than 95 percent of the total water used throughout the production of a pair of jeans.

The Lee brand also focuses on conserving water throughout the denim manufacturing supply chain including fiber production with goals for sustainable cotton and sustainable synthetics by 2025, in fabric construction, and in finishing, where Lee has saved more than 1 billion liters of water. In 2020, Lee announced its first global sustainability goals, which include increasing Indigood-dyed products every year through 2025.

“At Kontoor Brands, we believe companies have a responsibility to use resources wisely, drive sustainable innovations, and preserve and protect the planet,” said Dhruv Agarwal, senior director of Global Materials Innovation and Product Development, Kontoor Brands. “Expanding our Indigood™ partnerships to new mills helps in our greater mission to conserve water in every step of our supply chain.”

Ralph Lauren Working To Change How the Fashion Industry Dyes Cotton: Works With Dow, Jeanologia, Huntsman Textile Effects and Corob

NEW YORK CITY — March 22, 2021 — Ralph Lauren Corp. today introduces Color on Demand, a dyeing platform that will transform how the fashion industry colors cotton — more sustainably, more effectively and faster than ever before. The company has established Color on Demand, a multi-phased system, with a clear ambition to deliver the world’s first scalable zero wastewater cotton dyeing system.

Every year, trillions of liters of water are used for fabric dyeing alone, generating around 20 percent of the world’s wastewater.1,2 This untreated wastewater is incredibly polluting and traditionally required rigorous, lengthy and costly treatment to make the water reusable. Designed to help address water scarcity and pollution caused by cotton dyeing, Color on Demand is a new system composed of a set of technologies that will enable the recycling and reuse of all water from the dyeing process, establishing the world’s first scalable zero wastewater cotton dyeing system. In addition to significant water savings, Color on Demand dramatically reduces the amount of chemicals, dye, time and energy used in the cotton dyeing process. Further, for the first time in the industry, Color on Demand also provides a more efficient and sustainable way to color cotton at any point in product manufacturing, rather than at the outset. This will enable significantly shorter lead times for making product color decisions.

“Traditional color dyeing is one of the most polluting practices in our industry, and as a global brand, we recognized the need to create a scalable solution,” said Halide Alagöz, chief product and sustainability officer at Ralph Lauren. “Color on Demand significantly reduces the environmental impact of dyeing cotton, and as an added benefit, will enable us to better balance inventory and meet personalized consumer demands faster than ever before.”

To implement its groundbreaking approach, Ralph Lauren brought together four leading innovators in their respective fields, including Dow, a leader in materials science; Jeanologia, a leader in sustainable solutions for garment and fabric finishing, with high expertise in garment dyeing and close loop water treatment systems; Huntsman Textile Effects, a global chemicals company specializing in textile dyes and chemicals; and Corob, a global technology leader in dispensing and mixing solutions, to reimagine each stage of the coloring process and join this shared mission to create a more sustainable and efficient system for cotton dyeing.

As part of the first phase of Color on Demand, Ralph Lauren optimized the use of ECOFAST™ Pure Sustainable Textile Treatment, a pre-treatment solution developed by Dow for cotton textiles. When used with existing dyeing equipment, ECOFAST Pure enables the use of up to 40-percent less water, 85-percent fewer chemicals, 90-percent less energy and a 60-percent reduction in carbon footprint compared to traditional cotton dyeing processes.3 Ralph Lauren is integrating this process into its supply chain and will launch product using this technology later this year.

“Water scarcity and pollution are important issues for the fashion industry and through our partnership with Ralph Lauren we are working towards addressing these challenges,” said Sheila Bonini, senior vice president, Private Sector Engagement at World Wildlife Fund. “Technology has the ability to accelerate change at a scale that matters, so it’s exciting to see Ralph Lauren establishing innovative new models that transform outdated practices and can deliver measurable outcomes for people and planet. This is exactly the kind of leadership we need to see from the fashion industry.”

Color on Demand is yet another significant step in Ralph Lauren’s journey to address its environmental footprint, which includes eliminating hazardous chemical use in its supply chain and reducing water use across its operations and value chain by 2025. By 2025, Ralph Lauren aims to use the Color on Demand platform in more than 80 percent of the Company’s solid cotton products.

Longtime TRSA And Industry Stalwart Bill Mann To Retire

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — March 22, 2021 — A lot of laundry has passed through the hundreds of plants that have benefited from Bill Mann’s expertise since he entered the industry as a teen-age “bundle boy” in September 1958. Now after a 62-year career in the laundry industry and a key post as director of industry affairs for TRSA, Mann will retire next month after the April 21-22 TRSA HR, Health and Safety Summit.

Noting that he wants to spend more time with family, including his wife Charlene and their children and grandchildren, Mann is stepping away from a part-time role he’s continued as liaison to the TRSA Safety Committee, serving as an inspector for TRSA’s Hygienically Clean certification program and guiding the production of the Laundry Operations and Management manual published in 2017. Mann’s latest move comes eight years after his “official” retirement in 2013, following a nine-year stint as TRSA’s director of industry affairs.

“I’ve always said, ‘If you’re going to do a job for someone, do it right,’” he said. “I feel now is the right time to step back from the industry,”

TRSA President and CEO Joseph Ricci praised Mann’s many contributions to TRSA and the linen, uniform and facility services industry. “Bill has given so much to the industry and TRSA through our educational programs, Hygienically Clean certification, the Safety Committee, advising individual members and so much more,” Ricci said. “He will leave a huge space to fill. But we understand he’s ready to retire. Soon, Bill will have a chance to reflect on his many accomplishments during an outstanding career.”

Mann cited three key areas that he’s proud to have contributed to, including:

  • Hygienically Clean certification: as director of industry affairs in the early 2000s Mann served on the steering committee that organized an initiative that evolved into the Hygienically Clean certification program. Since 2012, the certification effort has helped elevate standards to protect laundry employees as well as hospital staff and personnel at other organizations served by the roughly 230 plants that are now certified to the Hygienically Clean standard.
  • Textile Laundering Technology: Commonly known by its acronym “TLT,” this 2007 publication offers laundry operators guidance on wash formulas and all facets of chemical use and handling, fibers and fabrics, finishing, energy and troubleshooting throughout the laundry process.
  • Laundry Operations and Management: Published in 2017, this book offers an overview of the laundry industry, from soil sorting to washing, drying and finishing, packout and delivery. An incoming manager who’s new to the industry or an industry veteran can gain insights from the work of dozens of operators and supplier partners who contributed to this publication.

Before joining TRSA, Mann had an outstanding career in the laundry industry, beginning with the laundry and dry-cleaning business of Mary McIntosh Services, York, PA. After starting part-time in the wash aisle while still in high school, Mann learned quickly. Within 12 years he had advanced to general manager for Mary McIntosh. During this period, he also completed a bachelor’s degree in business administration at York College.

Mann later entered the supplier partner ranks, serving as a chemical sales representative for BASF Corp. and later UNX Chemicals Inc. Mann also attained a certificate in accounting to buttress his management skills.

Mann was active in community affairs as well over many years. He served as president of the Spring Creek Lions Club, Macungie, PA; and he played a key role in the founding of a bowling league for developmentally disabled children and adults.

Archroma Celebrates Three Years Of Working With Aniline-Free Indigo Heroes

REINACH, Switzerland — March 22, 2021 — Archroma, a global supplier of specialty chemicals towards sustainable solutions, celebrates nearly three years of successfully converting the denim industry to aniline-free1  pre-reduced liquid indigo.

Archroma launched its aniline-free1 Denisol® Pure Indigo in May 2018.

Archroma has built a very strong reputation as a leader in developing innovations and solutions that help make its industry more sustainable. The company calls its vision and commitment: “The Archroma Way to a Sustainable World: Safe, efficient, enhanced, it’s our nature.”

Aniline is a key ingredient to make the indigo molecule. Unfortunately, during this process some aniline impurities are carried through into the indigo dyestuff. When the indigo is dyed on the fabric, a lot of the aniline impurity is locked into the pigment in the fabric. The remainder of the aniline impurity, approximately 300 metric tons annually, is discharged during dyeing. This can be an issue as aniline is toxic to aquatic life. In addition, exposure levels to factory workers can be high. The new Denisol Pure Indigo 30 liq was therefore developed as an aniline-free indigo solution for designers, manufacturers and brand owners who long for authentic indigo inspiration.

Since the launch of Denisol Pure Indigo, several denim manufacturers, such as Absolute Denim, Advance Denim, Azgard 9, Kilim Group, Nuevo Mundo, Rantex, Shasha Denim and Tuong Long, have taken the matter in their hands and converted their production or dedicated lines to aniline-free denim to brands and retailers.

The innovation is also supported by denim partners such as Be Disobedient and The Denim Window.

Almost three years later, Archroma and its partners can pause and proudly look back to all the aniline they have removed — together — from the market, thus preserving the health of many denim workers and the aquatic life in our rivers.

Archroma evaluates that, based on the total quantity of Denisol Pure Indigo sold until its introduction, its partners helped remove almost 18 metric tons of aniline from the denim supply chain. That represents an equivalent to about 300 million pairs of jeans free of aniline and more than 18’000 garment workers protected from its toxicity.2

“Aniline is a key ingredient of indigo,” said Heike van de Kerkhof, CEO at Archroma. “Because of the toxicity of aniline, we really wanted to do something about it — although we initially faced some resistance as not everyone was ready to shed light on the issue of aniline, especially in the indigo industry. That is why we are so grateful to the many like-minded denim partners who decided to take the hand we were offering with Denisol Pure Indigo.”

1 Below limits of detection according to industry standards (tested & proven).

2 Based on 15 minutes of work to produce one pair of jeans, produced over 8-hour working days and 300 working weeks per year.

Mattress Manufacturers Turn To Precision Textiles Fiber Products As Alternative To Foam

TOTOWA, N.J. — March 22, 2021 — Precision Textiles — a supplier of coated fabrics, nonwovens and laminations for the bedding, automotive and healthcare industries — is experiencing increased demand for its fiber products as mattress manufacturers grapple with industry-wide foam shortages. The fiber products can be used in a mattress’s top comfort layer as well as an alternative to firmer foams that support spring units. Using a combination of both can result in a reduction of foam up to five inches, reducing bedding manufacturers’ reliance on the volatile raw material without sacrificing the feel of the mattress

“Raw material availability, particularly in foam, is perhaps the most serious challenge our industry is facing today,” said Gerry Welkley, national sales manager of Precision Textiles. “As consumer demand for home furnishings and mattresses continues to grow at a rapid pace, we have been fielding calls from our customers looking for fiber products that can be used instead of  traditional foam used in quilted comfort layers as well as alternatives to the firmer-support foams used as support layers deeper inside the mattress build. As these raw material shortages and allocations on foam prevail, retailers and consumers alike are looking for manufacturers that can supply them with products in a timely fashion. Precision Textiles has three solutions in stock and available to help our partners bridge the supply gap without sacrificing the comfort feel of the mattress.”

Engineered to perform as a foam alternative, Precision Textiles’ ECOLOFT, ECOLOFT LUXE and its line of Vertically Lapped Densified Eco-Pads provide the necessary “spring back” and support that foam products offer.

“In addition to being a suitable alternative to bridge the gap, these three products offer increased breathability, providing a cooler night’s sleep, and offer inherent self-extinguishing FR properties,” Welkley added. “Additional benefits include non-allergenic and recyclable attributes.”

Ecoloft is a high-quality quilting fiber made by combining conjugated spiral crimp pillow fill with bicomponent polyester. It reduces the amount of combustible materials in a finished mattress by eliminating the traditional polyurethane foam layer behind the fire-resistant (FR) barrier. The lofty polyester fibers in Ecoloft also create an added dimension of luxury to mattress panels and borders, while serving as an easy-to-quilt product. A top layer of a mattress constructed with Ecoloft can displace one quarter of an inch up to three quarters of an inch of foam.

The fiber in Ecoloft luxe is produced by combining down alternative pillow fill with bicomponent polyester. Like Ecoloft, it reduces the amount of combustible materials in a mattress by doing away with the polyurethane foam layer behind the FR barrier. Ecoloft Luxe is also an easy-to-quilt product that creates an added depth of luxurious silky dimension to a mattress’s panels and borders. A top layer of a mattress constructed with Ecoloft Luxe can displace one quarter of an inch up to three quarters of an inch of foam.

Vertically Lapped Densified Eco-Pads are formulated to maintain indentation load deflection longer than any conventional fiber pad. Their vertical orientation, as opposed to the common horizontal orientation of other fiber pads, gives a mattress more spring-back for greater support and resilience. They also contain a lower level of volatile organic compounds than conventional foam. Using Eco-Pads can reduce the thickness of an inner support layer of foam by one to four or five inches.
