Techtextil 2022 Exhibitor Preview: SHIMA SEIKI MFG., LTD.

On display will be SHIMA SEIKI’s latest innovation in flat knitting technology as applied to the field of technical textiles—a prototype weft knitting machine capable of multi-axial yarn insertion. Fabrics produced on this machine use inlay technique for the production of hybrid textiles that combine the stretch characteristics of knitted fabrics with the stability of woven textiles, suited to various technical applications. To this, warp yarn is inserted to further expand its capability to produce 3D-shaped carbon fiber and composite preforms directly on the machine. This is made possible by taking advantage of the fact that flat knitting as a textile production method is capable of producing end products that are shaped-to-form and with added thickness.

Compared to current methods of preform production, savings in post-processing time, material, labor and associated costs are immense, realizing efficient and sustainable production. SHIMA SEIKI’s own yarn unwinding technology is also used for optimum yarn feed and tension for use with technical yarns that are otherwise difficult to knit. Industrial textile samples knit on the multi-axial machine will also be available for examination on-site.

SHIMA SEIKI’s SDS®-ONE APEX4 3D design system will be available for demonstrations as well. Of particular interest should be its ultra-realistic simulation capability that realizes Virtual Sampling. When countless variations must be evaluated before arriving at a final design, virtual product samples can be used to streamline the decision-making process by minimizing the enormous amount of time, cost and material normally associated with producing actual samples for each variation. When approved, the same data can be converted to machine data for immediate knitting, significantly reducing lead times.

Trützschler Man-Made Fibers Presents OPTIMA Systems For Industrial Yarns

WINTERTHUR, Switzerland — June 14, 2022 — Trützschler Man-Made Fibers introduces OPTIMA for IDY and expands the range of the successful OPTIMA extrusion systems by the industrial yarn (IDY) sector. In addition to OPTIMA for carpet yarns (MO40-C, MO40-E and TO40), variants for manufacturing (semi-)industrial multifilament yarns are now joining the line.

Since 2012, Trützschler has been developing and building high-performance extrusion lines for carpet yarns (BCF – Bulk Continuous Filament) and industrial/technical yarns made of polyester, polyamide and polypropylene. Evolution And Impact Of The ACIMIT Sustainable Technologies Project

The “Sustainable Technologies” project, realized by ACIMIT, the Association of the Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers, starting from 2011, testifies the commitment of Italian manufacturers of textile machinery in the development of technological solutions to improve the environmental sustainability of their products.

The main output of the project is ACIMIT Green Label, a voluntary declaration of Italian textile machinery companies, which shows the energy and/or environmental performances of its machines. An international certification body, RINA, has validated the Green Label issuing process and evaluations it contains. Every year RINA verifies — on the 20 percent of the joined companies —  both the evaluation criteria and operating conditions of the machinery being assessed for the labeling process.

In recent years the companies involved in the project have implemented technological innovations on their machines with a resulting improvement from the point of view of energy and environment. Ninety percent of the Suppliers of Sustainable Technologies has made some innovations on their machines, with or without the Green Label. Of these, 48 percent have made changes across the overall portfolio. Technological areas in which companies have mainly invested concern: software — 19 percent of companies; mechanical components — 18 percent; and production process — 16 percent.

Moreover, data provided by companies allowed to calculate the impact generated by the project from. The analysis allowed to quantify the really achieved reduction of emissions of CO2 eq. generated from companies implementing technological innovations on their machines with the Green Label, improving their energy/environmental performance. In particular, it has been estimated a lower reduction of emissions of 221,181 tonn CO2 eq. over the previous year, equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions generated by 38,534 cars driving (on average) 35,000 kilometers per year, or 23,306 world citizens per year.

Here are the key figures of the ACIMIT Green Label:

  • 44 ACIMIT member companies joined the project;
  • 1433 Green Labels were created from 2012 to present;
  • 48 percent of the companies modified the Green Label machinery, in order to improve its energy/environmental performance, from 2015 to present;
  • 55 percent of the companies plan to make other modifications on Green Label machinery, in order to improve its energy/environmental performance, during 2022;
  • 34 percent of the machines reduced energy consumption;
  • 5 inspections carried out by a third party (RINA) every year.

AATCC Announces The 2022 Concept 2 Consumer® Student Merchandising Competition Winners

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — June 8, 2022 — AATCC is pleased to announce the winners of the 2022 AATCC Concept 2 Consumer® Student Merchandising Competition! This is a digital poster competition that will allow students the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in business, marketing, and merchandising. This year, AATCC received 12 entries, with 34 students participating! This year’s theme asked students to merchandise a sustainable travel wear line that incorporated recycled materials, sustainable manufacturing, and antibacterial and/or odor-control properties.

First Place

Plane by Paradise by Danielle Klinedinst, University of Delaware.

Klinedinst was awarded $1,000 from AATCC, $300 from Farhan Patel, and one-year free AATCC Student Membership

Klinedinst is pursuing a degree in Fashion Merchandising and Management. She says, “this competition challenged me to research, have creativity, yet practically develop all aspects of a line while aligning with the modern values of the fashion industry, including sustainable practices, garment longevity, and textile functionality. Moving forward in a merchandising career, I seek to innovate and maintain a strong vision in the work I do as I have learned from this competition.”

Second Place

Any/Wear by Samantha Blocher, Washington State University.

Blocher was awarded $750 from AATCC, $200 from Farhan Patel, and one-year free AATCC student membership.

Blocher will be graduating with a BA in Apparel Merchandising, Design, and Textiles. From this competition, she “learned to challenge myself to think creatively and to identify unsaturated markets in the current apparel retail landscape.”

Third Place

First Class by Amber Mills, Temuera Queypo, Shing Yo Tsai, and Emma Raz, Oregon State University

This group was awarded $250 from AATCC, $100 from Farhan Patel, and one-year free AATCC student memberships.

Amber Mills is studying Merchandising Management and Apparel Design. She says, “One thing I learned from this competition was how to listen to each team member’s different creative ideas to collaborate on one cohesive concept. I’m very excited to be a Retail Management Intern for Nordstrom this summer and am hoping to pursue a career in merchandising as a women’s apparel buyer.”

Temuera Queypo is also a Merchandising Management student and said, “This competition was a great opportunity for me in gaining insight and experience of what would be expected within this profession, it was helpful getting the inside look and being able to produce content within association standards.”

Shing Yo Tsai, a Merchandising Management student, revealed, “I learned the importance of communicating with team members throughout this competition. I’m planning to expand my clothing line (both online and in-store) after I graduate.”

Emma Raz is a merchandising management student with a minor in marketing. She mentioned, “I learned extremely valuable information about AATCC test methods and how they are used on garments we all wear today. I am an incoming merchandising intern for Macy’s this summer! My goal is to become a buyer!”
