Walmart Celebrates Classic Fashion’s Commitment To U.S. Manufacturing, American Jobs

SANTA ANA, Calif. — October 7, 2022 — Today, Walmart leaders joined Classic Fashion executives and elected officials at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Classic Fashion’s first U.S.-based production facility. For the next five years, the new Santa Ana, California site will cut and sew apparel exclusively for Walmart, reinforcing the commitment of both companies to “Made In USA.” With this facility, Classic Fashion will create 125 new jobs by 2023, supporting the existing workforce, and an additional 225 by 2027 totaling 350 new American jobs over five years.

Classic Fashion entered phase one if it’s strategy to support U.S. manufacturing by establishing the production facility The Cut & Sew Co., Inc. in Santa Ana, Calif. The second phase requires the company to identify countries close to the U.S. to source materials for the facility, and phase three, is to grow vertically to source materials directly from the U.S.

“Classic Fashion is proud to be a supplier to Walmart as we build our manufacturing presence in the United States,” said Sanal Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of Classic Fashion. “I’m proud to highlight our incredible U.S.-based manufacturing staff and the local community here in Santa Ana as we continue to build on Classic Fashion’s 20-year history of success.”

Walmart’s collaboration with Classic Fashion is the latest example of the company’s long-standing commitment to support American manufacturing that dates back to the company’s founder, Sam Walton. Nearly two-thirds of Walmart’s annual product spend is on products that are made, grown or assembled in the U.S., and in 2021 the company announced a new $350 billion investment to reinforce that goal. In addition to partnering with companies like Classic Fashion to expand its U.S. manufacturing presence, Walmart also supports American entrepreneurs through its annual Open Call event.

“Walmart is proud to work with Classic Fashion, which will soon be manufacturing its excellent products here in the U.S.,” said Jason Fremstad, senior vice president, Supplier Development & Sourcing at Walmart. “Investing in local manufacturing creates American jobs, helps small businesses expand and benefits communities like Santa Ana. New ASTM International Standard Supports Cannabis Safety

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. — October 10, 2022 — ASTM International’s cannabis committee (D37) has developed a new standard on medicinal-use cannabis inflorescence.

The standard, soon to be published as D8439, provides specifications for cannabis flower that can be used to support sound and reproducible research. According to ASTM International member David Vaillencourt, this standard will help consumers, labs, regulators, and manufacturers of cannabis products by establishing consistent testing for quality and safety.

“With a fragmented cannabis industry marketplace, there is no common set of requirements around reporting cannabinoids and terpenes, which are the primary constituents that are linked to therapeutic benefits,” says Vaillencourt. “This lack of consistency harms public health and prevents evaluation of product safety and efficacy across jurisdictions. This standard provides a solution to this problem.”

Vaillencourt further notes that with the rapid pace of innovation in the cannabis industry, it must take more steps, like creating D8439, to standardize internationally and ensure patient welfare.

This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #3 on health.

Cobra Advanced Composites Launches Sustainable Flax Fibre Visual Finish Components For Automotive OEMs

CHONBURI, Thailand — October 10, 2022 — In response to strong demand from leading OEM customers, Cobra Advanced Composites (CAC), the automotive business of composite products manufacturer Cobra International, has launched a range of production-ready, flax fiber based, visual finish components.  The new natural fibre composite solutions offer a sustainable option compared to traditional carbon look visual components.

CAC has supplied automotive OEMs with lightweight composite components since 2006, focusing on visual carbon fiber prepreg parts and building a reputation as a leading global supplier to the premium car and motorcycle OEMs. With new European regulatory targets approaching fast, manufacturers have requested CAC with developing alternative composite technologies using more sustainable materials.

CAC has used flax fiber prepregs with autoclave processing to create the new components. The low density flax fibers, typically cultivated in Western Europe and much less energy intensive to produce than carbon, provide good impact resistance and excellent vibration damping making them suitable for a wide variety of parts including interior as well as exterior parts.

The new CAC program provides OEM customers with several options to include sustainable natural fibers, with the company now offering:

  • Standard visual carbon twill outer ply with flax fiber backing plies. This option maintains the classic carbon look of a twill weave carbon fabric but substitutes the backing plies (often two plies) for a woven flax prepreg material.
  • Visual flax twill outer ply with flax fiber backing plies. Maximizing the natural fiber content with 100-percent flax fiber reinforcement produces the most sustainable construction.
  • Body color painted flax fiber components. CAC has productionized fully painted flax fiber parts, providing a natural fiber composite option for components where a visual fiber finish is not required.

By leveraging its strengths in clear coated carbon manufacturing, and natural fiber expertise developed in other business units, CAC has successfully navigated the challenges of processing flax to meet the tough automotive quality standards. Working with leading global suppliers, CAC can color the protective lacquer, epoxy resin system and even the flax fibers themselves, creating natural fiber components with a huge palette of potential colors and shades.

“Developing the highest quality flax-based visual composite solutions for our OEM customers has been challenging yet rewarding,” commented Michel Roeffaers, managing director Commercial, CAC. “I am proud of the results that the team has achieved with CAC now offering a full range of natural fiber composite options that perfectly complement our traditional visual carbon fiber parts.”

Textile Machines From Sweden At New Local Industry Fair

STOCKHOLM, Sweden — October 10, 2022 — On October 13-14, the new local industry fair Svenska Textilmaskinsmässan (The Swedish Textile Machinery Fair), a new meeting place for sustainable textile production, will run for the first time. The organizer of the fair is the University of Textiles in Borås. The Textile Machinery Association of Sweden (TMAS) and its member companies will showcase innovation and textile machines from Sweden – technology that enables local production.

The interest in local textile production in Sweden is growing as a result of the need for more sustainable production chains which need to be implemented in everything from material selection to production and distribution, providing good conditions for moving all or parts of the production home.

“TMAS members help automate and streamline textile production, reduce waste and emissions and contribute to increased quality and flexibility,” says Therese Premler-Andersson, general secretary of TMAS. “These requirements are crucial to respond to a market undergoing the transition towards circularity and sustainable business models. The initiative for the fair comes at the right time when local production is something more people are considering and it will be exciting to present Swedish solutions in Sweden.”

The Swedish company Värnamo of Sweden has manufactured bed and decorative textiles of the highest quality in Sweden since 1951. With the support of the Swedish machine manufacturer ACG Kinna Automatic, it has established a modern facility in Sweden which has enabled it to compete with production in low-cost countries.

“Following the machine investments we have made in recent years, we can manufacture and sell to major players in both retail and hotel operations,” says Martin Åhlander, CEO of Värnamo of Sweden.

“New investments have meant that we have been able to break new ground and bring in larger players such as Jysk and Mio among others.”

ACG Kinna Automatic was founded in Sweden in 1977 and is one of the world’s most experienced manufacturers of textile machines. The project together with Värnamo of Sweden is an excellent example of how it helps its customers to increase automation and thereby save costs.

“We are great at helping our customers to increase automation,” says Christian Moore, CEO ACG Kinna Automatic and board member of TMAS. “At Värnamo of Sweden, where the production has been placed in Sweden since the start, this meant that our machines could support the company in gearing up its production, which we are proud of.”

Over 40 exhibitors will participate in the Swedish textile machinery fair, of which almost 30% are TMAS members with machines manufactured in Sweden and with Swedish expertise. Between 300-400 visitors are expected. The fair is free of charge for visitors.

Participating TMAS member companies are ACG Nyström, ACG Kinna Automatic, Baldwin, Coloreel, Eltex of Sweden, ES Automatex Solution, Eton Systems, Imogo, Svegea of Sweden, Texo and Vandewiele Sweden.

Enrique Silla, President Of Jeanologia: “The Future Of Fashion And Design Is To Align Beauty And The Planet”

VALENCIA, Spain — October 6, 2022 — The President of Jeanologia, Enrique Silla, has conveyed that “the future of fashion and design is to align beauty and the planet” during the inauguration of “Future of Fashion”, the international congress on the sustainable transformation of fashion that is being held in Valencia (Spain) on October 5th and 6th with Valencia being designated the World Design Capital 2022 by the World Design Organization.

For Silla, “the designer of the future is a technological artisan with a scientific mind who joins forces with cutting-edge technology to create a better world, who manages to design and manufacture products in a sustainable way while maintaining the spirit and soul of an artisan.”

Likewise, he stressed that “with the tools of the future we are no longer going to collaborate with scissors, but with robots, we will no longer use canvas, but the tablet, we will no longer use water to imbue colors into garments, but we’ll use nanobubbles, among other technologies for garment finishing such as lasers”.

In his opinion, “design is not only form and function, but it is also the planet”. Therefore, he has encouraged designers to create a better world with products that do not pollute.

In its support of the World Design Capital of Valencia, Jeanologia has contributed to the promotion of this congress in which prominent international fashion figures will participate such as Christiane Dolva and Maria Bystedt, from the H&M Foundation; Christopher Raeburn (the British designer who has won the Drapers Sustainable Fashion Awards “Brand of the Year” award two years running); Alice Bah Kuhnke, member of the European Parliament; professors from Glasgow and the London School of Fashion; and Fernando Cardona, head of BrainBox at Jeanologia, among others.

“Future of Fashion” is a milestone in the official program of World Design Capital València 2022 which, for the first time, brings together national and international educational institutions and industry. The congress consists of activities, talks and workshops on the future of the fashion industry based on 6 main themes: raw materials; design; supply chain; production; consumption and waste; and emissions and biodiversity.

Blue jeans: an industry success story

Fernando Cardona, head of the BrainBox department at Jeanologia, revealed in a presentation at “The Future Of Fashion” how the company has turned denim into the most sustainable garment on the market and into a success story for other textiles. enabling dehydration and detoxification in the production of jeans.

Jeanologia’s mission is to create an ethical, sustainable and eco-efficient textile industry, ushering in a new era through sustainability, digitalization and automation.

Their MissionZero concept is to produce garments without any waste or pollution. To this end, Jeanologia has developed various disruptive technologies such as laser, G2 ozone, e-Flow, SmartBoxes, Colorbox and H2 Zero, the first water recycling system to achieve 100% ecological production.

Thanks to the integration of its technologies, today it is possible to eliminate 100% of the waste from jean production, from the fabric to the final garment, minimizing the use of water, energy and chemical products. And all while increasing productivity and reducing costs to guarantee the competitiveness of the industry, and with zero pollution.

Laser marking workshop for customization

Additionally, Amor Cardona, a member of Jeanologia’s BrainBox team, gave a workshop during the congress focused on how to customize garments using Jeanologia’s Nano laser technology.

The company provided a live demonstration on how it creates a unique experience in retail thanks to this technology that has revolutionized the point-of-sale. With Nano laser, Jeanologia allows the consumer to participate in the personalization of their own garments so that they can contribute with their creativity and turn them into unique pieces, in a fast, simple, visual and sustainable way.

Jeanologia joins forces with the Swedish Embassy in Spain and the H&M Foundation

Within the framework of World Design Capital Valencia 2022 and the “Future of Fashion” congress, representatives of the Swedish Embassy in Spain and companies such as H&M and IKEA, among others, have visited the Jeanologia facilities to learn about their disruptive technologies first-hand, and establish new collaborative synergies with the aim of achieving a more sustainable, efficient and competitive textile industry.
