Darn Tough Vermont Adds ‘Sit Ski Boss’ Trevor Kennison To Athlete Lineup

NORTHFIELD, Vt. — March 23, 2023 — Darn Tough Vermont, the fastest-growing American manufacturer of performance outdoor and lifestyle socks, announces their partnership with adventure fanatic and professional sit skier, Trevor Kennison. Kennison will join Darn Tough’s athlete roster and support the development of the brand’s styles with a focus on the Snow category. Already a well-known face in the ski community, Kennison will continue pushing the limits both on and off the mountain, alongside Darn Tough, with his fearless mentality and extraordinary athleticism.

Kennison breaks barriers and faces adversity head-on which immediately drew Darn Tough to him. In 2014, he suffered a spinal cord injury while snowboarding in Vail, which left him completely paralyzed from the waist down. Since his injury, he has been dedicated to pushing boundaries and living large.

“Trevor and Darn Tough share so many similarities,” said Courtney Laggner, Brand & Community Marketing manager at Darn Tough. “We go hard. We push ourselves all the time. We’re fiercely loyal and we value quality in everything we do”

In 2019, Kennison rose to stardom when he took center stage at Jackson Hole’s annual Kings and Queens of Corbet’s competition and launched off the famous couloir. He made history again in 2022 by becoming the first sit skier to hit the X Games Big Air jump and again in 2022 landing the cover of SKI Magazine. Perhaps the most inspiring is that Trevor is the first person to land a double backflip in the area where he broke his back — Vail Pass.

“I am stoked to be a part of a company that has amazing products backed by better values,” Kennison said. “The design and durability of Darn Tough’s socks match my adventurous lifestyle perfectly.”

An avid surfer and mountain biker, Kennison is an active member of the High Fives Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides resources for disabled athletes to help them get back to their outdoor activity of choice from snowboarding and skiing to surfing and mountain biking. The High Fives Foundation inspired Kennison to try sit skiing — enabling him to get back to doing what he loves.

Advanced Textiles Association’s (ATA) Women In Textiles Summit Continues To Grow, Inspire, Empower

ROSEVILLE, Minn. — March 23, 2023 — Now in its fifth year of existence, the Advanced Textiles Association (ATA) Women in Textiles brought together many of the industry’s female leaders and future leaders for opportunities to network, commiserate and collaborate.

The summit, which took place in Charleston, S.C., March 1-3, has nearly doubled in attendance since its inaugural run in 2019. Nearly 120 textile professionals gathered for the latest event to reconnect, learn and gain inspiration with peers who share similar experiences and journeys in a traditional male-dominated manufacturing sector. These women were able to share their experiences through several networking events and activities; gain insights into paths to success; and hear compelling speakers with timely, relevant messages.

The unique event featured engaging sessions, straightforward interaction and connection-building opportunities during business sessions and activities that included receptions, dinners, history and ghost walks and a morning Mentor Walk & Talk through the time-honored streets of Charleston. Indeed, the summit provided a forum for growth and leadership for these women seeking growth, empowerment and rapport. The gathering explored how women are contributing to the success of their organizations and the industry at large.

The summit also included engaging roundtable discussions, where participants learned more about each other and the challenges they face. Topics included CRM Systems & Marketing Automation; Supply Chain; Maximizing Motivation and Engagement; Time Management; and Mental Health & Wellness Advocacy in the Workplace.

Another highlight was “Rapid One-Ones,” likened to “speed dating,” where attendees lined up and spent a couple of minutes speaking with another attendee to learn more about their background and experience before rotating to the next person.

Co-emcees Debbie Grant, chief of staff at MMI Textiles, Brooklyn, Ohio, and Jenny Nichols, global marketing manager – Engineered Coated Fabrics at Trelleborg, Greenville, S.C., led the sessions with confidence, aplomb and humor.

A number of returning attendees were on hand, along with many first timers, including Kelly Murphy, co-owner and co-president of Bolger & O’Hearn Inc., Fall River, Mass.

“The Women in Textiles Summit was insightful as much as it was motivating,” Murphy said. “Being able to connect with other women in our industry helped to strengthen my resolve to forge ahead as a woman in what is notoriously a man’s world. The opportunities to network with other industry leaders was invaluable. We may have been first time attendees, but this won’t be the only or last time we attend this amazing event.”

Third-time attendee Cherie “Cheryl” Petrovic, president & CEO of Therm-Equip Inc., Ravenna, Ohio, added that she was “pleased that over a hundred leaders shared time and knowledge with us at the Women in Textiles event. The networking opportunities are ample and have been worth the price of the ticket. We’ve learned from one another across all lines and leave refreshed and inspired by new ways of doing old things.”

Dr. Melissa Furman, MS, DBA, owner/consultant at Career Potential LLC, was on the docket during both business sessions, first as the Day 1 keynoter. A dynamic expert in the areas of generational diversity, unconscious bias, leadership success and emotional intelligence, she presented an interactive session, “Navigate, Elevate, Accelerate,” where she provided practical strategies and recommendations to help overcome challenges and achieve professional goals.

Dr. Furman discussed how to develop a strong brand, build impactful relationships, communicate with power and influence, negotiate and more. She brought her background in higher education – particularly business, counseling and psychology – to the conversation to help individuals and organizations achieve success.

She pointed out that 50.8 percent of the U.S. population are women, and that women make up 47 percent of the workforce. Fifty-three percent of the college-educated workforce are women, and 43 percent of professional and management jobs are held by women, she added. At 30 percent, women are underrepresented in manufacturing and are 1.8 times more likely to leave the sector, she noted, citing Deloitte.

On Day 2, she led a Burnout Workshop on “Emerging Stronger: Refresh, Refuel, Recharge,” another interactive session that utilized engaging exercises to help women identify, prevent and overcome burnout.

An insightful panel discussion, “Next in Textiles — The Future is Female,” featured three participants — two who entered textiles with no experience in the industry — all offering incredibly distinct backgrounds. Moderated by Nichols, the panel included Nichole Holroyd, COO, Spiritus Systems; Donielle Lorelli, product manager of Textiles, National Industries for the Blind; and Kaylee Smith, North America Sales at Mehler Engineered Products Inc.

Also, Robin Ritz, creative visionary & owner at InCord, Colchester, Conn., presented the “ABCs of Workplace Success” — with A being authentic, B being bold and C being communicating. She explored practical insights for achieving satisfaction and success without compromising one’s integrity or values. She explained how attendees can “show up” for themselves and build positive, trusting relationships with others. The discussion invited listeners to self-examine, and contained opportunities for self-reflection as well as group interaction, and included worksheets.

“The summit was an amazing opportunity to connect with women from all facets of the industry,” said Hilary Walker, lead material innovator at Nike. “It was a very collaborative and welcoming space in which we could discuss problems and solutions as well as experiences and future endeavors. The summit was an amazing opportunity to meet mentors as well as new friends.”

Haelixa Added To The Denim Deal

ZÜRICH, Switzerland — March 23, 2023 — The steering committee for the Denim Deal has announced that Haelixa, the Switzerland-based standard in physical traceability, is approved as a new signature. The Denim Deal is an international collaboration of more than 50 private and public sector companies united in the commitment to produce denim more circularly.

The Denim Deal aims to close the loop and achieve change in the value chain. Based in Amsterdam, the group is a leading example of working towards a circular economy where textile waste no longer exists. The brand and manufacturing members pledge to work towards using 5 percent recycled post-consumer cotton in all future denim collections and produce 3 million denim jeans made with 20-percent recycled post-consumer cotton.

Coordination of the Denim Deal is led by Roosmarie Ruigrok, where the objective is to unite potential allies who have made the journey to circularity a priority. She has been working to improve sustainability in textiles for more than two decades and is an expert on enrolling the correct stakeholders to instigate change.

“A circular supply chain in the textile industry is like a well-prepared machine — it ensures that every part of the production process runs smoothly, from sourcing post-consumer materials to delivering well-made finished products to customers,” Ruigrok stated. “It not only drives efficiency and profitability but also builds trust among stakeholders and fosters sustainable practices — we welcome Haelixa who offers a trustful traceability solution.”

Over the last few years, the demand for the technology in recycled denim has grown as brands are asked to validate their recycling claims. Haelixa’s unique DNA solution marks and traces fibers from the source to retail. Using DNA to mark the recycled post-consumer cotton, Haelixa substantiates claims by testing the final garment to validate that the marked waste is present.

The Denim Deal is pushing to lead the change in how denim is made. Changing the standards of operation is always challenging, and traceability is a key to authenticating recycled claims. “We are committed to promoting the use of recycled fibers through traceability and thrilled to align with this group,” said Holly Berger, Haelixa’s Marketing director. “The goals of the Denim Deal support our vision for a circular economy.”

Textile Recycling Industry Leaders From Around The Globe Join Forces To Promote High Standards And Expand The Reuse And Recycling Of Clothing

ABINGDON, Md. — March 22, 2023 — The Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association (SMART) 2023 Annual Convention in Dubai drew record-breaking attendance of more nearly 200 industry leaders from 14 countries including the UAE, India, and Pakistan. SMART is the leading industry voice promoting high standards and best practices for reuse and recycling of textiles and related secondary materials. Our members reduce solid waste by collecting, reclaiming, and “closing the loop” by processing, reusing, converting, and distributing these recyclables. SMART is continuously working to educate the public and local government officials about the importance of increasing clothing and textile reuse and recycling.

SMART Executive Director Susan DeCourcey said, “the popularity of the event shows textile industry leaders are serious about innovation advancements that will impact the environment and the economy globally.”

Quick facts:

  • According to Allied Marketing Research, the global textile recycling market is anticipated to generate nearly $9.4 billion by 2027.

  • The U.S. EPA reports that current clothing and textiles recycling has a great impact on reducing greenhouse gases, The latest report estimates the generation of textiles in 2018 was 17 million tons.

Source: https://www.epa.gov/facts-and-figures-about-materials-waste-and-recycling/textiles-material-specific-data

  • The wiping rag industry has grown substantially since the pandemic which has also expanded the demand for textile materials needed in the cleaning and health industries. Industrial wiping cloths made from recycled textiles also have a significantly smaller carbon footprint than newly manufactured wiping clothes or laundered rags.

NETWORKING:

International trade is a critical component of the textile industry’s success. More than 60% of recovered textile waste is sent abroad to more than 100 countries, equating to more than 1.4 billion pounds of used clothing – creating hundreds of thousands of jobs worldwide. It is crucial our membership work together to help the industry grow. SMART’s President Steve Rees from Wipeco Industries explained, “Our members commitment to supplying multiple market segments in countless geographical areas, speaks to the intrinsic global value that reusing and recycling textiles has. As our trade association continues to grow, we are connecting members to new markets and working to reduce the global textile waste crisis.”

ADVOCACY:

SMART is continuously working to educate the public and local government officials about the importance of increasing clothing and textile reuse and recycling. The benefit of these educational outreach efforts is gaining momentum throughout the nation, including programs in New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and most recently, California.

Established in 1932, SMART is a recycling-based, international, nonprofit trade association comprised of for profit used clothing, wiping material and fiber industry companies. SMART members use and convert recycled and secondary materials from used clothing, commercial laundries and nonwoven, off spec material, new mill ends and paper from around the world. SMART companies are committed to the “green” way of life.

SMART Leadership and its members are working to bring textile recycling into a circular economy.  SMART members continually trumpet their message to the donating and recycling public by encouraging them to “Donate, Recycle, Don’t Throw Away.”

XAAR Celebrates Sustainability Roadmap Achievements

CAMBRIDGE, England — March 23, 2023 — Inkjet technology group Xaar held its first Sustainability Week to mark the significant progress its Sustainability Roadmap has had across the business in its first year.

Events began March 13, and the week saw a host of initiatives including a Community Day with raffles, charity fundraising, a quiz and pie-baking competition, raising over £2,300. At its center, was the release of Xaar’s latest video that demonstrated the progress of the group’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) program, walking the viewer through a number of the initiatives to date and the key elements of its Sustainability Roadmap to 2030.

The video takes the perspective of employees from across the group, with each of Xaar’s four pillars — Environment, People, Innovation and Community — explained.

As a key part of the People pillar, the video showcases Xaar’s people-centric approach, highlighting activities such as the strong collaboration with local schools and the valuable support provided by the Mental Health First Aiders within the workplace.

Xaar’s commitment to offering a range of industry opportunities and work placements for young people to inspire the next generation of engineers continues to gather momentum. Encouraging students to engage with key STEM subjects through workshops and educational activities is a key part of the Sustainability Roadmap. In addition, last year Xaar enrolled a further four young people onto its Apprenticeship Programme, bringing the current total across the business to 13 apprentices.

Under Environment, Xaar has increased energy efficiency and invested in renewable energy projects, more sustainable logistics and transport initiatives as drivers for change. In 2022, Xaar reduced its plastic consumption by more than 1.2 metric tons and after a recent reorganization at Xaar’s Printhead Business Unit facility in Huntingdon — the company are expecting a 40 percent energy reduction by the end of quarter one this year.

While within Innovation, the culture of inspiring and “creative problem solving” is emphasised alongside the way in which Xaar’s printheads and products can help customers respond to their own sustainability demands.

Covered under both its commitment to People and the local Community, Xaar’s UK companies have chosen as charity partner, BREAK, who provide support for children and young people throughout the various stages of the care system, offering stable homes to young people and adults when they are ready to leave care and begin independent living. The charity relationship with BREAK has seen Xaar team members involved in various fundraising projects, building collaboration between both organisations.

Xaar’s COO Graham Tweedale said: “Our Sustainability Roadmap has seen a real cultural change across our Group as we put Sustainability at the center of our business.

“Celebrating Sustainability Week and the launch of our video shows the impact our initiatives have had so far and how through the continuing efforts of our team we will make further great strides on our journey set out in our Sustainability Roadmap to 2030.”

Orion Debottlenecks Post-Treatment Unit In Germany For High-Jetness Carbon Black

HOUSTON — March 22, 2023 — Orion Engineered Carbons, a global specialty chemicals company, said today it has debottlenecked a post-treatment unit at its Cologne, Germany, plant that produces high-jetness specialty carbon blacks.

The debottlenecking enables Orion to increase production capacity and also produce beads in addition to powder. High-jetness carbon blacks deliver a deep black masstone with a bluish undertone and are popular in automotive coatings.

“It’s challenging to push jetness above certain levels, and Orion is one of only a few carbon black producers that can do it,” said Markus Mahn, director of Global Marketing for Coatings. “Demand was high last year and continues to be strong this year.”

Orion has plans to install a second post-treatment unit at its Cologne facility due to the rapidly growing demand for the company’s premium grades.
