Dr. Andrew Jordan Recipient Of Harry S. Baker Distinguished Service Award

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — February 13, 2023 — Andy Jordan, a long-time employee in the National Cotton Council (NCC) Technical Services Department who now works as an agricultural engineering consultant, received the 2022 Harry S. Baker Distinguished Service Award.

Jordan was recognized during the NCC’s 2023 annual meeting held February 10-12 in Dallas, Texas.

The award, named for the late California industry leader and past NCC President Harry S. Baker, is presented annually to a deserving individual who has provided extraordinary service, leadership and dedication to the U.S. cotton industry.

In presenting the award, outgoing NCC Chairman Ted Schneider said Dr. Jordan served 31 years in the Council’s Technical Services department, first as manager of Marketing and Processing Technology before being named as that department’s director and later its vice president.

Schneider said that while serving in these positions, “Dr. Jordan provided exceptional leadership in managing a diversity of technical issues affecting the industry. Much of his success resulted from his skillful direction of a Council staff that included professional experts in safety and health environmental sciences, engineering, textile processing, plant physiology/agronomy and plant breeding.”

Jordan, who earned engineering degrees from the University of Georgia and Clemson University, joined the NCC in 1976 after working for Western Electric and Lockheed Georgia Aerospace and serving a previous stint as an instructor at Clemson.

Kenneth Hood Honored With Oscar Johnston Lifetime Achievement Award

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — February 13, 2023 — The late Kenneth Hood, a former National Cotton Council (NCC) vice president, treasurer, vice chairman and chairman, received the Oscar Johnston Lifetime Achievement Award for 2022. He was honored at the NCC’s 2023 annual meeting held February 10-12 in Dallas, Texas, with outgoing NCC Chairman Ted Schneider presenting the award to Hood’s daughter Lou Ann Petro.

The annual award, established in 1997, is named for Oscar Johnston, whose vision, genius and tireless efforts were foremost in the shaping and organization of the NCC. The award is presented to an individual who served the cotton industry, through the NCC, over a significant period of his or her active business career. The award also recognizes those who exerted a positive influence on the industry and who demonstrated character and integrity as well as perseverance and maturation during that service.

Hood, a Mississippi native and Mississippi State University graduate, was active in local, state and national cotton organizations. He served on numerous NCC committees and chaired multiple committees, among them the Farm Program and Economic Policy Committee, Cottonseed Segment Representation Study Committee, its Bale Moisture Task Force, and the Beltwide Cotton Conferences Steering Committee. He continued serving as an advisor to the NCC until his death.

A former Delta Council president and chair of the American Farm Bureau Federation’s cotton committee, he also played a key role in Mississippi’s boll weevil eradication effort.

Hood was a partner in Perthshire Farms in Gunnison, Mississippi. He also was founder and board chairman of InTime, Inc., a precision agriculture consulting firm, was president of Hood Gin Company and Hood Equipment Company, and was a Board member of Staplcotn.

Schneider said Hood had a positive influence on his producer peers through his willingness to embrace cutting edge technology.

“Kenneth’s willingness to adopt new technology was unmatched as was his eagerness to work with researchers on projects aimed at improving farming efficiency,” Schneider said. “He inspired others to do the same.”

In addition, Hood was an active leader in ginner organizations. He was a former president of the National Cotton Ginners Association and the Southern Cotton Ginners Association.

A recipient of the NCC’s Harry S. Baker Award in 2008, Hood was honored over the years with many awards, among them Cotton Farming Magazine’s Farmer of the Year, Cotton Grower magazine’s Cotton Achievement Award, Progressive Farmer Magazine’s Man of the Year in Service to Mississippi Agriculture, Farm Progress’ High Cotton Award, Delta Council’s Outstanding Conservation Farmer, Delta Business Journal’s Ag Profile Leadership Award, and the New York Cotton Exchange Cotton Marketer of the Year. He also was ginner of the year for both the Southern Cotton Ginners Association and the National Cotton Ginners Association and recently was selected to Cotton Incorporated’s Cotton Research and Promotion Hall of Fame’s 2022 class.

“Despite these many accolades,” Schneider said, “Kenneth remained humble and was always willing to give of his time whether it was for neighboring producers and researchers or association staffers and journalists. He was an energetic and innovative producer and ginner as well as a tireless servant and leader.”

Uster Tester — Celebrating 75 Years Of The Famous Instrument

USTER, Switzerland — February 14, 2023 — Assessing textile quality was once a matter of opinion. Today it’s a matter of fact — objective, repeatable and universally understood. Quality now has numerical values, as the basis for trading, pricing and ultimately consumer satisfaction. And this year marks the 75th anniversary of the pioneering innovation which fostered that change — and created the global quality environment of textile production in the 21st century.

It all started in the early 1940s, with a request from a group of spinners in Switzerland. They wanted a reliable way of measuring textile slivers, rovings and yarns for ‘evenness.’ This property was, and still is, seen as critical to the uniformity, consistency and processability of materials, and the ultimate determinant of value and quality. The first instrumental method for evenness testing was developed for these spinners by Zellweger Uster, at that time a company active in the emerging field of electronics.

That company is known today at Uster Technologies, and it’s fair to say that every textile producer in the world knows the name of its most famous product, the Uster Tester. In fact, the word Uster alone is used by textile mills to signify both the process of evenness testing, and the instrument itself. In the past 75 years, the Uster Tester has been developed and extended apace with fast-moving technological innovations. Measurement capabilities have extended with specially-developed sensors, and ingenious software. Connectivity with other Uster systems at every stage of processing has created a unique Quality Management Platform for the entire mill.

Setting global standards

The original tester is displayed in a museum on the top floor of Uster headquarters. It is, or course, manually operated, and outputs test results as a line on graph paper. This first venture into testing was based on a capacitive sensor and simple electronics. It was the precursor for gradual development stages over the next two decades, leading to the emergence in the 1970s of the name Uster Tester and its rapid popularity across the textile world.

A key aspect for those early Swiss spinners was to learn more about their yarn quality, to improve it for their customers but also to benchmark their own standards against other producers. Giving quality a numerical value was a massive breakthrough, reflected today in the language of quality used for marketing, trading and competitive progress today.

The concept of global benchmarking took a giant leap forward in 1957 with a short article in the German textile magazine Melliand, giving basic data on yarn quality from a number of spinners. The data was, of course, based on the Uster Tester, and the idea of a comprehensive service of quality information grew into the now-legendary Uster Statistics publications.

This detailed collation of accurate data from all around the textile world has become essential to the entire industry. It is the framework for meaningful fiber purchasing, yarn development and trading, now of course, available as an app for mobile devices. In an environment where speed and user-friendliness are vital, the latest Uster Tester interacts with Uster Statistics to provide a one-click check of yarn quality and specifications.

Managing the whole mill

It’s clear that the evenness tester will also continue to be the must-have laboratory testing instrument in its own right, whatever the benefits of its connectivity. Test conditions in the lab are more consistent than in the production halls, so results can be compared over time to establish a basis for best settings and procedures in mill equipment.

So, the Uster Tester has its place in every serious textile laboratory. But its modern role is much wider, thanks to seamless connectivity with other Uster testing and measuring instruments. Critically, it unites lab testing with in-process monitoring, by intelligent cooperation with Uster yarn clearers in the winding department.

Through the Uster Quality Expert, and the unique ‘Assistant Q’ guidance facility, mills now have the benefit of Total Testing. This delivers effective and preventive process optimization, with smart alerts pointing instantly to potential trouble spots in the entire process. Integration between 100 percent in-process monitoring and precise lab measurement ensures quality is secured at the right level every time.

Spinners today have the power to analyze every element of their processes and select the best options for their own profitability and their customers’ complete satisfaction. In one system, fiber, yarn and fabric quality are optimized and secured. Thanks to the Uster Tester and Uster Quality Expert, mills can rely on a world-class Quality Management Platform that takes their business planning from imperfect approximation to guaranteed certainty … ready for the next 75 years.

PANGAIA And Evrnu Release The NuCycl® Denim Jacket Made Entirely From Textile Waste

NEW YORK CITY — February 13, 2023 — This Thursday, February 16, materials Science Brand PANGAIA will release its latest innovation through PANGAIA Lab. Made from textile innovations company Evrnu’s NuCycl®, the RENU jacket marks a pivotal moment in the brand’s journey of material innovation as it’s the company’s first denim product made entirely from cotton textile waste.

PANGAIA Lab is the discovery platform within PANGAIA, bringing advanced technology to lifestyle goods, making it possible for people to wear the future, now. The partnership with Evrnu was born through a mutual mission to find replacements for high resource fibers such as cotton, and to harness the value of materials already in circulation, rather than fossil fuel, animal-derived, or virgin fibers.

“Evrnu represents the very best of innovation, in the space of recycled fibers. We have been on a long journey together as partners and we are delighted to be bringing out our first product together, demonstrating the extraordinary potential for superior quality from recycling technologies,” said Dr. Amanda Parkes, chief innovation officer.

EVRNU’s NuCycl® Technology

EVRNU’s NuCycl is a fiber created from pre- and post-consumer textile waste. It is up to  four times stronger than other cellulosic fibers including cotton and most MMCF and can be recycled up to five times without loss in performance or quality. Using NuCycl helps divert textile waste away from landfill and incineration and reduces the industry’s reliance on cotton, MMCF, nylon, and polyester.

Unlike mechanically recycled cotton, NuCycl does not need to be blended with any virgin fiber and allows more recycling cycles, making it a significantly less resource intensive alternative to cotton or polyester.

“We are thrilled to partner with PANGAIA which shares our drive to unlock the future of materials and technology for the fashion industry,” said Stacy Flynn, Evrnu CEO and co-founder. “Our mission is to help brands create clothing out of recycled materials that are not only of the highest quality but can also continue to be recycled. We are delighted by the growing market demand for NuCycl.”

The RENU jacket is part of the PANGAIA modern wardrobe — with an oversized fit, it is intended to be styled over a hoodie. With this limited launch, PANGAIA’s signature material textblock is replaced with the edition number of the jacket.
