ITMA 2023 Exhibitor Preview: Mayer & Cie.

ALBSTADT, Germany — March 27, 2023 — When ITMA opens in Milan on 8 June 2023, the textile machinery manufacturer Mayer & Cie. will be there for the first time with both of its business units: circular knitting machines and braiding machines. Along with the circular knitting machines Mayer & Cie. is exhibiting a braiding machine at its stand E101 in Hall 2. The company focuses on similar features in both areas: sound machines fitted out with solutions that make braiders and circular knitting machines more efficient, longer-lasting and thereby more valuable. The solutions range from upgrade kits for individual machines and innovations to reduce waste to digital solutions that improve the customer experience.

A tried and trusted choice: circular knitting machines from Mayer & Cie.

Mayer & Cie. will be exhibiting three circular knitting machines at ITMA: the revised OVJA 2.4 EM and Relanit 3.2 HS and the new three-thread fleece SF4 3.2 III. All three serve classical uses and, except for the new SF4-3.2 III, are established in the market.

The OVJA 2.4 EM knits double jacquard with electronic individual needle selection in the cylinder and double fabric with weft thread. It is currently the most productive machine in its class. Spacer fabric has now been added to its portfolio.

Machine number 2 is a byword for every knitter. For ITMA 2023 Mayer & Cie. has fitted out the existing Relanit 3.2 HS with improved yarn guides. It has a needle with an optimized hook and tongue shape and a pre-determined breaking point to improve safety at higher output. The new sinker is another feature of the Relanit 3.2 HS. It makes the machine run smoother and reduces wear and tear.  “Many knitting mills all over the world already swear by Relanit machines,” says Axel Brünner, head of product management at Mayer & Cie. “For them and new customers we are working on further improvements to our bestsellers.”

With the third machine on show Mayer & Cie. is addressing a major trend in the clothing industry. The SF4-3.2 III for three-thread fleece, especially for leisurewear, both in pure cotton and in blends, is in great demand. As Axel Brünner explains: “In this new machine we combine our tried and trusted MBF 3.2 and components of our MFC 3.2 that have proved advantageous in the Chinese market.”

Brisk braiding: Extra-speed machine for textile braid

The MR-15/18 C/Single Deck braider on show at ITMA is designed for textile braiding. It comes with the new capstan wheel pull-off that is especially suitable for smaller-diameter hoses with textile braiding. The SpeedBooster upgrade kit delivers more speed and up to ten per cent more output.

Smart upgrades for long, efficient machine life

Longer, faster and with even greater precision, upgrade kits enable customers to benefit from technical progress at Mayer & Cie. The upgrade portfolio ranges from speed boosters to special plaiting and laying equipment. Another newcomer is spare parts with upgrade kits customised for individual machines. They deliver additional production and planning safety.

Upgrade kits – like all known spare parts – are available from the web shop. Along with an easy-to-use search function the web shop provides smart additional functions and includes the new loyalty programme my.loyaltyclub with attractive discounts.

Smart functions: knitlink, knithawk and Control 5.0

Fewer faults and less waste is the simple truth. The new knithawk recognises and identifies knitting faults fast during the knitting process, switching the machine off automatically. That makes production significantly more sustainable and efficient.

knitlink is the platform that links the manufacturer, representatives and customers. It is IIoT-based and the central location for all machine data that every customer can use to record and evaluate the performance of his machines. It is also a repository for documents such as operating instructions, manuals and spare part recommendations. In addition, knitlink provides every customer with remote access to the circular knitting machine.

knitlink incorporates the web shop, which is digitally linked to the new-generation Control 5.0. Circular knitting machines with Control 5.0 are IoT-enabled and can inter alia be operated from mobile devices, so the knitter no longer needs to be physically at the controls.

A sound choice: Opting for Mayer & Cie. pays off

“With our ITMA presentation we show why and how investing in Mayer & Cie. machines is worthwhile and pays long-term dividends,” says Mayer & Cie. CEO Benjamin Mayer. “Last but not least we thereby also respond to the desire for more sustainability in the use of resources.”

Noble Biomaterials’ Ionic+® Botanical Technology Receives EPA Registration

SCRANTON, Pa. — March 23, 2023 — Noble Biomaterials, a global supplier of antimicrobial solutions for soft surface applications, announced its latest antimicrobial technology has received official EPA registration.

Ionic+® Botanical uses a bio-based registered citric acid formula to inhibit the growth of microbes and reduce odor on fabric and other soft surfaces. Noble Biomaterials began development of the proprietary Ionic+® Botanical formula in 2021 and filed for EPA registration as part of the development process. Registering the citric acid-based active formula allows Noble’s licensed partners to claim antimicrobial benefits such as “odor control” and surface protection for various performance fabric applications.

Citric Acid is one of the most commonly used ingredients in food and beverage products, pharmaceutical and dietary products, and cleaning agents. The registration of Noble’s citric formula introduces this commonly used product into a whole new arena — the protection of textiles and other everyday manufactured materials.  Noble has seen the growing interest in plant-based solutions and recognizes that the Ionic+® Botanical technology can be an important step in meeting the demand for high performance, sustainable material preservation solutions.

“Sometimes innovative solutions are staring you right in the face,” said Joel Furey, founder and chief commercial officer at Noble Biomaterials. “Citric Acid is used for so many things in our everyday lives and during the pandemic we noticed how much citric was used as an antimicrobial and disinfectant agent in various consumer products. This led us to explore its use in fabric applications. After significant research and development, we were able to engineer a novel approach that was both an effective and durable solution for the antimicrobial protection of textiles and other materials. Our product team deserves tremendous credit for bringing Ionic+ Botanical to market so quickly.”

Receiving an EPA registration is a big step in the process of advancing Noble’s Ionic+ Botanical products. Before manufacturers can sell products with antimicrobial actives in the United States, EPA must evaluate these products thoroughly to ensure that they meet federal safety standards to protect human health and the environment. EPA regulates antimicrobial actives by reviewing the toxicity of the ingredients and the potential for exposure. Approval of a product for registration is based on scientific assessment related to the identity, composition, potential adverse effects, and environmental fate of each EPA-registered product. After a lengthy review and the EPA determines that no adverse effects are expected to occur when the product is used according to the label directions, they grant product registration.

Over the past 5 years, Noble has seen increasing demand for Ionic+ and antimicrobial fabrics in active wear and health care. At the same time, the market has shifted to more sustainable fabric options requiring more wear with less care, or washings per use. Today, Ionic+ products are found in several categories, including athleisure, travel, home bedding and towels, and sports accessories. Noble is developing Ionic+ Botanical with select development partners, including Salomon — global leader in outdoor, and Trident — global leader in Home textiles. Ionic+ Botanical products will be widely available in 2024.

“We hold ourselves to a very high bar,” said Furey. “We know it’s important to our Brand partners and ultimately the end users to bring products to the market that are built on integrity, efficacy, and sustainability. As our portfolio of antimicrobial solutions with Ionic+® continues to grow, we are excited to add now a plant-based option.”

The new Ionic+ Botanical product line compliments Noble’s established Ionic+ Mineral® products built around the benefits of permanent silver technology to control bacteria on fabric.

Noble has a history of groundbreaking innovation, covering the first EPA-registered silver-based textiles, advances in the use of silver metalized yarns and fibers in wound care, to the first silver antimicrobial textile on the International Space Station. Noble’s antimicrobial products are found on elite athletes, in healthcare and medical supplies, as well as in military applications.

Darn Tough Vermont Adds ‘Sit Ski Boss’ Trevor Kennison To Athlete Lineup

NORTHFIELD, Vt. — March 23, 2023 — Darn Tough Vermont, the fastest-growing American manufacturer of performance outdoor and lifestyle socks, announces their partnership with adventure fanatic and professional sit skier, Trevor Kennison. Kennison will join Darn Tough’s athlete roster and support the development of the brand’s styles with a focus on the Snow category. Already a well-known face in the ski community, Kennison will continue pushing the limits both on and off the mountain, alongside Darn Tough, with his fearless mentality and extraordinary athleticism.

Kennison breaks barriers and faces adversity head-on which immediately drew Darn Tough to him. In 2014, he suffered a spinal cord injury while snowboarding in Vail, which left him completely paralyzed from the waist down. Since his injury, he has been dedicated to pushing boundaries and living large.

“Trevor and Darn Tough share so many similarities,” said Courtney Laggner, Brand & Community Marketing manager at Darn Tough. “We go hard. We push ourselves all the time. We’re fiercely loyal and we value quality in everything we do”

In 2019, Kennison rose to stardom when he took center stage at Jackson Hole’s annual Kings and Queens of Corbet’s competition and launched off the famous couloir. He made history again in 2022 by becoming the first sit skier to hit the X Games Big Air jump and again in 2022 landing the cover of SKI Magazine. Perhaps the most inspiring is that Trevor is the first person to land a double backflip in the area where he broke his back — Vail Pass.

“I am stoked to be a part of a company that has amazing products backed by better values,” Kennison said. “The design and durability of Darn Tough’s socks match my adventurous lifestyle perfectly.”

An avid surfer and mountain biker, Kennison is an active member of the High Fives Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides resources for disabled athletes to help them get back to their outdoor activity of choice from snowboarding and skiing to surfing and mountain biking. The High Fives Foundation inspired Kennison to try sit skiing — enabling him to get back to doing what he loves.

Advanced Textiles Association’s (ATA) Women In Textiles Summit Continues To Grow, Inspire, Empower

ROSEVILLE, Minn. — March 23, 2023 — Now in its fifth year of existence, the Advanced Textiles Association (ATA) Women in Textiles brought together many of the industry’s female leaders and future leaders for opportunities to network, commiserate and collaborate.

The summit, which took place in Charleston, S.C., March 1-3, has nearly doubled in attendance since its inaugural run in 2019. Nearly 120 textile professionals gathered for the latest event to reconnect, learn and gain inspiration with peers who share similar experiences and journeys in a traditional male-dominated manufacturing sector. These women were able to share their experiences through several networking events and activities; gain insights into paths to success; and hear compelling speakers with timely, relevant messages.

The unique event featured engaging sessions, straightforward interaction and connection-building opportunities during business sessions and activities that included receptions, dinners, history and ghost walks and a morning Mentor Walk & Talk through the time-honored streets of Charleston. Indeed, the summit provided a forum for growth and leadership for these women seeking growth, empowerment and rapport. The gathering explored how women are contributing to the success of their organizations and the industry at large.

The summit also included engaging roundtable discussions, where participants learned more about each other and the challenges they face. Topics included CRM Systems & Marketing Automation; Supply Chain; Maximizing Motivation and Engagement; Time Management; and Mental Health & Wellness Advocacy in the Workplace.

Another highlight was “Rapid One-Ones,” likened to “speed dating,” where attendees lined up and spent a couple of minutes speaking with another attendee to learn more about their background and experience before rotating to the next person.

Co-emcees Debbie Grant, chief of staff at MMI Textiles, Brooklyn, Ohio, and Jenny Nichols, global marketing manager – Engineered Coated Fabrics at Trelleborg, Greenville, S.C., led the sessions with confidence, aplomb and humor.

A number of returning attendees were on hand, along with many first timers, including Kelly Murphy, co-owner and co-president of Bolger & O’Hearn Inc., Fall River, Mass.

“The Women in Textiles Summit was insightful as much as it was motivating,” Murphy said. “Being able to connect with other women in our industry helped to strengthen my resolve to forge ahead as a woman in what is notoriously a man’s world. The opportunities to network with other industry leaders was invaluable. We may have been first time attendees, but this won’t be the only or last time we attend this amazing event.”

Third-time attendee Cherie “Cheryl” Petrovic, president & CEO of Therm-Equip Inc., Ravenna, Ohio, added that she was “pleased that over a hundred leaders shared time and knowledge with us at the Women in Textiles event. The networking opportunities are ample and have been worth the price of the ticket. We’ve learned from one another across all lines and leave refreshed and inspired by new ways of doing old things.”

Dr. Melissa Furman, MS, DBA, owner/consultant at Career Potential LLC, was on the docket during both business sessions, first as the Day 1 keynoter. A dynamic expert in the areas of generational diversity, unconscious bias, leadership success and emotional intelligence, she presented an interactive session, “Navigate, Elevate, Accelerate,” where she provided practical strategies and recommendations to help overcome challenges and achieve professional goals.

Dr. Furman discussed how to develop a strong brand, build impactful relationships, communicate with power and influence, negotiate and more. She brought her background in higher education – particularly business, counseling and psychology – to the conversation to help individuals and organizations achieve success.

She pointed out that 50.8 percent of the U.S. population are women, and that women make up 47 percent of the workforce. Fifty-three percent of the college-educated workforce are women, and 43 percent of professional and management jobs are held by women, she added. At 30 percent, women are underrepresented in manufacturing and are 1.8 times more likely to leave the sector, she noted, citing Deloitte.

On Day 2, she led a Burnout Workshop on “Emerging Stronger: Refresh, Refuel, Recharge,” another interactive session that utilized engaging exercises to help women identify, prevent and overcome burnout.

An insightful panel discussion, “Next in Textiles — The Future is Female,” featured three participants — two who entered textiles with no experience in the industry — all offering incredibly distinct backgrounds. Moderated by Nichols, the panel included Nichole Holroyd, COO, Spiritus Systems; Donielle Lorelli, product manager of Textiles, National Industries for the Blind; and Kaylee Smith, North America Sales at Mehler Engineered Products Inc.

Also, Robin Ritz, creative visionary & owner at InCord, Colchester, Conn., presented the “ABCs of Workplace Success” — with A being authentic, B being bold and C being communicating. She explored practical insights for achieving satisfaction and success without compromising one’s integrity or values. She explained how attendees can “show up” for themselves and build positive, trusting relationships with others. The discussion invited listeners to self-examine, and contained opportunities for self-reflection as well as group interaction, and included worksheets.

“The summit was an amazing opportunity to connect with women from all facets of the industry,” said Hilary Walker, lead material innovator at Nike. “It was a very collaborative and welcoming space in which we could discuss problems and solutions as well as experiences and future endeavors. The summit was an amazing opportunity to meet mentors as well as new friends.”
