Orion Engineered Carbons Achieves 2022 Emissions Targets For Sustainability-Linked Term Loan

HOUSTON — May 1, 2023 — Orion Engineered Carbons, a global specialty chemicals producer, announced today the company has achieved its 2022 emissions targets in the United States and will receive a 10 basis point rate reduction in interest payments on its sustainability-linked term loan, saving approximately $650,000.

When Orion agreed to the seven-year $650-million term loan in 2021, the company was one of the first to link the loan to environmental goals.

Starting this year, a third-party firm audited the air emissions figures at Orion’s four plants in the U.S. and determined whether the company achieved its targets. If Orion meets its targets for all four years, the company could reduce its financing costs by a total of $2.6 million.

“We’re pleased the first round of audits for our term loan were successful,” said Corning Painter, chief executive officer. “Achieving the emissions reduction goals underscores our strong focus and commitment to sustainability. We are confident we will have continued success achieving the emissions targets for the loan, which will lead to significant interest savings.”

Over the past five years, Orion has been upgrading its emissions control technology at all four of its U.S. plants. Three of these complex projects are completed, with the final one scheduled to be finished in 2023. The facilities are in Ivanhoe, La.; Belpre, Ohio; and the Texas cities of Orange and Borger.

Westex®: A Milliken Brand Partners With Dovetail Workwear To Launch Women At Work

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — May 1, 2023 — Global flame-resistant and arc-rated (FR/AR) textile manufacturer, Westex: A Milliken Brand, partnered with the largest exclusively women’s workwear apparel brand in North America, Dovetail Workwear, to launch the co-branded Women at Work campaign. Announced today and kicking off on National Skilled Labor Day, May 3, the initiative celebrates women in skilled labor professions — including welders, electricians, and oil and gas workers — honoring their important roles in the American workforce.

Women established their positioning in the US skilled labor force during World War II, but today still hold less than 10 percent of the jobs available despite the growing demand of skilled labor support across business sectors. Within the male-dominated industries, Westex and Dovetail Workwear launched the Women at Work campaign to highlight females in non-traditional careers and pave the way for future generations of women workers in specialized industries.

“At Dovetail, our daily inspiration comes from the women who are building our cities and operating our power grids. Our goal is to make workwear that is worthy of her grit and to celebrate her physical skills, fortitude and ingenuity,” said Sara Deluca, co-founder of Dovetail Workwear. “We want women to be seen; it’s an ethos of the Dovetail brand, to support and uplift the ladies in the field where they are still the vast minority,” she continued.

Launching across social media platforms, Westex and Dovetail Workwear partnered with industry tradeswomen and Dovetail’s brand ambassadors, known as Mavens, to highlight a day in the life of women on the job site. Tradeswomen are encouraged to share their own social media posts using the hashtag #WomenAtWork to spread additional awareness and be entered to win a custom Women at Work metal sign. Congruently, a Women at Work promotion will run from May 3-8 online at dovetailworkwear.com for a chance to win Dovetail Workwear gear, including the brand’s new Britt Utility capsule collection, constructed from Westex’s flame resistant denim and canvas.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Dovetail on the Women at Work campaign and help bring attention to the women doing the work to build our communities, homes and businesses,” added Michael Langley, director of protective fabrics, Milliken & Company Textile Business.

A custom Women at Work patch will be offered as a special gift with purchase (while supplies last) for all online orders placed on May 3 at dovetailworkwear.com to celebrate National Tradesperson Day.

Asahi Kasei And Microwave Chemical Launch Joint Demonstration Project For Chemical Recycling Of Polyamide 66 Using Microwave-Based Technology

TOKYO — April 27, 2023 — Asahi Kasei and Microwave Chemical launched a joint demonstration project in April 2023 with the objective of commercializing a chemical recycling process for polyamide 661 (PA66, also called nylon 66) using microwave technology. The process utilizes microwaves to depolymerize2 PA66 and directly obtain the monomers hexamethylenediamine (HMD) and adipic acid (ADA), which is expected to be accomplished at high yield with low energy consumption. The monomers obtained can then be used to manufacture new PA66. In the demonstration, scraps from manufacturing and post-use waste material of PA66 for airbags and automobile parts are depolymerized.

Asahi Kasei currently produces fossil fuel–derived HMD and ADA as intermediates to manufacture Leona™ PA663, an engineering plastic featuring outstanding heat resistance and rigidity. PA66 is used in various applications, including plastic parts for automotive and electronic products, and yarn for airbag fabric, and its demand is expected to increase worldwide.

As the world moves toward carbon neutrality, attention is increasingly focused on manufacturing processes for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from chemical products derived from fossil fuels. Microwave Chemical is promoting technological and business development to achieve carbon neutrality in the industrial sector focused on process development using microwaves, which can directly and selectively heat target substances with high energy efficiency. For chemical recycling, Microwave Chemical is advancing its proprietary PlaWave™ technology platform for decomposing plastic using microwaves.

Through development combining Asahi Kasei’s experience in manufacturing HMD and ADA for more than half a century together with Microwave Chemical’s achievements in the industrialization of microwave technology, the two companies aim to commercialize a manufacturing process for PA66 that can reduce GHG emissions compared to the conventional manufacturing process.

Laboratory-scale studies that began in fiscal 2021 have confirmed the high-yield depolymerization of PA66 using microwaves, as well as the principle of the separation and purification process after depolymerization. Bench-scale equipment will now be assembled at Microwave Chemical’s Osaka Factory by the end of fiscal 2023, and a small-scale demonstration trial using this equipment will be performed in fiscal 2024 to collect basic process data for commercialization.

Microwave Chemical’s PlaWave™ technology platform for decomposing plastic using microwaves can depolymerize PA66 with low energy and obtain HMD and ADA monomers in high yield. The manufacturing process for PA66 using HMD and ADA obtained by depolymerization with this technology is expected to reduce GHG emissions compared to the conventional PA66 manufacturing process, while further reduction of GHG emissions may be achieved by the use of renewable energy for the power required to generate the microwaves.

By verifying the process from depolymerization to separation and purification in an integrated manner, this demonstration project aims to enable resource circulation of PA66 for further reduction of GHG emissions.

Moving forward, based on the results of the small-scale demonstration trial, a decision on the possibility of commercialization will be made by fiscal 2025 following detailed analysis. Concurrently with the small-scale demonstration trial, construction of a business model that involves the entire value chain in the chemical recycling of PA66 will be advanced, aiming to achieve a circular economy together with stakeholders in the PA66 value chain.

Asahi Kasei aims to be a global partner for its PA66 customers by providing optimal solutions for their carbon neutrality initiatives through studies of the practical application of material recycling and chemical recycling as well as trials for the commercialization of PA66 made using biomass-derived intermediate4.

Microwave Chemical is working to increase the scale of equipment and to make PlaWave™ more generally applicable in order to achieve the practical application of the chemical recycling of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA, also called acrylic resin), automotive shredder residue (ASR), plastic containers and packaging, flexible polyurethane foam, etc.

1 The main types of polyamide are polyamide 66 and polyamide 6, which have different chemical structures. With superior heat resistance and strength, polyamide 66 is widely used in industrial applications such as automotive and electronics.

2 The opposite of polymerization, depolymerization is the process of breaking down a polymer into a monomer or monomers by heat and other means.

3 Asahi Kasei is a manufacturer of engineering plastics such as polyamide 66, which is made from HMD and ADA, polyamide 6I, and polyamide 612, as well as polyamide 610, which is made based on plant-derived raw materials such as castor oil, and supplies optimal materials suited to various needs ranging from molding materials for automotive and electronics applications, airbag yarn and fabric, and tire cord.

Fire-Dex: Building A Legacy Of Quality And Protection For 40 Years

MEDINA, Ohio — April 27, 2023 — From a single pair of gloves to thousands of protective garments delivered to fire departments around the world, Fire-Dex has grown from small beginnings to become a leading provider of lifesaving gear. Now 40 years old and currently the country’s fastest-growing manufacturer of PPE for first responders, the company has consistently led through customer-driven product innovation and a focus on family that starts at the factory.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have a stellar team of associates and partners that have earned us a reputation for safety in the fire service industry,” says Bill Burke, chairman and owner of Fire-Dex. “Firefighters know what works and we’ve built our name on that confidence. There have been honors and awards along the way but still, nothing compares to having the respect of those we serve.”

A stitch in time

It was 1983 in Cleveland, Ohio, when Burke and a team of engineers envisioned a more flexible glove for firefighters who were frustrated by stiff, uncomfortable handwear. The new glove offered optimal strength but also superior mobility and comfort meaning wearers had much less trouble performing fine tasks. As sales soared, Burke dubbed the growing enterprise “Fire-Dex” for the “firefighting dexterity” the glove afforded wearers.

As Fire-Dex grew, its portfolio quickly expanded to encompass what is now head-to-toe protection for first responders. Being first-to-market with innovative products including the first ever particulate blocking fire hood and the revolutionary TECGEN71 outer shell has propelled Fire-Dex to new heights along the way while making its name synonymous with stronger protection against fire and harmful agents that are a constant threat in the line of duty.

Incorporating advanced materials in its designs has also kept the company top of mind among fire departments for decades — materials like lightweight TECGEN71 fabric combining the proven durability of DuPont™ Kevlar® and DuPont™ Nomex® with the unique benefits of the TECGEN fiber to lessen heat stress by reducing weight and increasing dexterity. With NFPA-certified options for fire and non-fire calls — including one of the widest selections of alternative PPE around — the company continues to operate with a mission “to serve those who serve.”

Cleaning and repairing protective apparel are also part of this mission that Gear Wash, a subsidiary of Fire-Dex, delivers on each day. As America’s largest Independent Service Provider network for PPE care and maintenance, Gear Wash extends the life of valuable garments by meeting NFPA 1851 standards for proper care. With 10 locations and more coming soon, Gear Wash helps protect firefighters by protecting their gear.

“Our pride comes from being part of the brotherhood and sisterhood of fire service professionals,” says Taylor Burke Gilman, President of Gear Wash. “The courage and fortitude of firefighters inspire us to care for and create the best gear to protect them on the job. We work hard to make sure that every day heroes have clean, quality gear when they go to work.”

Focused on the future

Making it all possible is 478 Fire-Dex associates responsible for designing and manufacturing the company’s products that are used across the globe. With 176 additional Gear Wash associates helping to ensure that all types of PPE can stay clean and compliant with industry standards.

Fire-Dex is guided by a core philosophy of quality, service and family. By emphasizing synergy and collaboration between associates and partners, the company has worked as a unified team to deliver world-class products and customer support for four decades while building many long-lasting industry relationships.

“Marking 40 years of Fire-Dex is a reminder of the dedication and passion of many individuals who have shaped our brand,” Burke said. “I never tire of seeing the faces of our hardworking associates who are proud to make our gear, who know everything that’s on the line. Fire-Dex truly sets a high standard, and I am confident it will remain that way for many years to come.”

Fire-Dex will officially celebrate its 40th anniversary on April 27 with a customer appreciation party during the FDIC International conference in Indianapolis, followed by events and activities for associates throughout the year in recognition of this important milestone.

With the ultimate goal of keeping first responders protected and prepared for the job, Fire-Dex is relentless in its pursuit of excellence. Visit firedex.com to meet a team striving to continuously innovate and create the best performing products to meet the needs of the fire service industry.
