UBQ Materials Raises $70 Million In Funding, Led By Eden Global Partners

TEL AVIV, Israel — September 13, 2023 — UBQ Materials Ltd., climate tech developer of advanced materials made from waste, today announced it has closed $70 million in funding, led by Eden Global Partners. Additional participants in the financing were return investors in the company, including TPG Rise Climate, TPG’s Rise Fund, Battery Ventures, and M&G’s Catalyst strategy.

The investment will support the company’s commercial, sales, and marketing scale up, as UBQ Materials continues its global expansion. This will include additional facilities in Europe and North America, alongside the impending opening of UBQ’s industrial-scale facility in Bergen Op Zoom, Netherlands. The new facility will have an annual production capacity of 80,000 tons of UBQ™, converting 104,600 metric tons of waste annually into a new raw material.

“We have long admired what the team at UBQ has built and are firm believers in the potential of the company’s groundbreaking waste conversion technology,” said David Dwek, CEO of Eden Global Partners. “At Eden, we partner with visionary companies working to shape a better future for their industries and our world, and UBQ is a pioneer in its space with the power to redefine global sustainability at scale. We believe the market opportunity for UBQ’s materials is enormous and look forward to supporting UBQ’s world-class management team as they continue to grow the business.”

UBQ Materials’ bio-based thermoplastic, UBQ, serves as a sustainable alternative to fossil-based plastics. UBQ Materials converts residual household waste diverted from landfills or incineration, including all organics, into an advanced thermoplastic material that is both climate-positive and highly recyclable. Leading industry brands have already integrated UBQ into durable and semi-durable products such as car parts, footwear, pallets, display stands, panels, planters, with customers including Mercedes-Benz, PepsiCo, and McDonald’s.

“UBQ as a sustainable material option can have a huge impact — but only with mass adoption. This means building UBQ facilities on a world-scale, which requires significant expansion and funding,” said Albert Douer, co-CEO and chairman of UBQ Materials. “Adding Eden Global Partners to our heavy-hitting investor list fuels our rapid growth trajectory as we continue to invent new material solutions that will expand humanity’s ability to use waste as a raw material.”

Over 3 billion tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) are expected to be produced annually by 2050 while current approaches to waste management continue to contribute to climate change. Landfills are the third largest human source of methane, a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) 84 times more powerful than carbon dioxide over 20 years, while incineration emits 1.7 kg CO2eq for every kilogram of MSW incinerated. Every kilogram of Israeli-manufactured UBQ replaces 1 kg of oil-based plastic, diverts 1.3 kg of waste from landfills and incinerators, and prevents up to 11.7 kg of CO2eq emissions measured over a 20-year time horizon.

“UBQ has pioneered a fully sustainable resource, pivotal for existing manufacturing industries across endless applications,” said Jack (Tato) Bigio, co-founder and co-CEO of UBQ Materials. “Beyond major brands adopting UBQ™, our compounding partners have become integral to our ecosystem allowing us to further expand our ‘Made with UBQ™’ applications and international footprint, driving a true circular economy.”

UBQ Materials is investing significantly in its R&D, developing new product lines to meet functional and performance requirements to serve the building and construction, consumer durables, automotive, and logistics and supply chain industries.

BIELLA, Italy— SEPTEMBER 13, 2023 — The appointment with the “Dialoghi di Confronto” is back at the 60th edition of Filo. These are short talks held by some of the protagonists of the textile industry, which take place over the two days of the fair, and which address highly topical issues for the textile and apparel system.

The agenda of the “Dialoghi di Confronto” of the 60th edition of Filo offers a rich program, as usual, in order to stimulate debate, reflections, and analysis among the operators concerning the most important topics related to this industry.

If the fil rouge of Filo60 is the search for a “good, healthy, clean, fair, and durable” textile, it is not surprising that sustainability is one of the most addressed issue during all the talks of the “Dialoghi di Confronto”. The discussion is dealt under different perspectives, to offer a general overview of the situation, also in relation to regulation and certification, but also to look beyond the traditional way of thinking, considering new possibilities for development offered by the commitment to sustainable production models intended for companies, also in relation to creativity.

Mack Weldon Introduces First-Of-Its-Kind Silver-Infused Denim

NEW YORK CITY — SEPTEMBER 12, 2023 — On Tuesday, September 12, the NYC based modern menswear brand Mack Weldon will be releasing the Silver Denim Collection. The company’s first foray into denim, the collection combines premium 5-pocket jean styling with a first-of-its-kind, IONIC+® silver infused denim that will stay completely odor-free for the life of the jeans, no matter how often they’re washed.

“Denim is a staple in every guy’s wardrobe, and therefore something we’ve been interested in for a while,” explains Mack Weldon Founder & CEO Brian Berger. “The challenge we gave ourselves was how can we deliver real Mack Weldon innovation in this very crowded category. We found the answer in a core material technology that we use in our premium Silver line of underwear and T-shirts.”

Mack Weldon’s Silver Denim collection was developed in collaboration with Cone Denim, a venerable American denim mill that has been producing best-in-class denim fabrics since 1891, and longtime Mack Weldon partner, Noble Biomaterials, inventor of the odor-blocking Ionic+ silver technology. Together, the companies have created a first-of-its-kind silver-infused, ring-spun cotton selvedge denim that’s guaranteed to stay odor-free for the life of the jeans.

“By working with our partners at Noble and Cone, we were able to combine Ionic+ SIlver technology with the best denim material to create something totally unique in the market. In addition to being naturally antimicrobial, our 10oz denim is the perfect year-round weight and has just the right amount of stretch, so there’s no bagging or sagging, just unfettered comfort and mobility. Our washing process also uses an eco-friendly, waterless ‘ozone rinse’ to lock in the natural dyes and give the jeans a premium raw look while minimizing water consumption.”

Additional features include durable, powder coated hardware, reflective accents on the cuffs for bike safety, bonded seams on the back pockets for reduced weight and greater longevity, and lint-preventing mesh inside the front pockets.

“We really considered every detail, and I think it shows,” Berger said. “The design is clean, the fit is flattering, the details are thoughtful, and the quality is top-notch. And of course the innovation is there, too. These jeans are polished enough for work and date nights, but also great for weekends. And no matter where or how hard you wear them, they’ll stay looking — and smelling — great!”

With German, EU Funding, Orion S.A. Investing 12.8 Million Euros In Project For Circular Carbon Black

HOUSTON — September 12, 2023 — Orion S.A., a global specialty chemicals producer, is investing 12.8 million euros — including 6.4 million euros in funding from the German government and European Union — to further develop and demonstrate a climate-neutral process for producing carbon black from alternative carbon sources, the company said today.

The technology is designed to improve Orion’s yield and throughput in the production of carbon black using circular feedstocks and thus potentially reduce the carbon footprint of the process by a significant amount. This could accelerate the shift to a circular economy and feed the growing demand for sustainable materials in the tire industry.

Half of the 12.8 million euros Orion plans to invest in this initiative, called the “Clean Carbon Black Research and Development Project,” will be provided by the decarbonization program of Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, supported by the EU’s NextGenerationEU fund.

“We are grateful for the funding from the EU and the German government. It shows a great commitment to innovation and creating a circular economy,” Orion CEO Corning Painter said.

“For years, Orion has been a leading innovator in making carbon black from circular feedstocks,” Painter added. “The Clean Carbon Black Research and Development Project’s aim will be to develop ways to reduce the carbon footprint and improve the yield and throughput, potentially lowering the cost of the material. Technological breakthroughs in this increasingly important field could have significant ramifications for energy integration and the molecular recycling of tires.”

A research facility is being built for the project at Orion’s main innovation center at its plant in Cologne.

Spinnova And Renewcell Announce Cooperation To Scale Circular Fashion

JYVÄSKYLÄ, Finland — September 13, 2023 — Spinnova, the sustainable textile material company, partners with Swedish textile recycling innovator Renewcell to develop and promote a concept to commercialize and scale textile waste-based fiber. The collaboration is the first of its kind, where textile waste-based fiber can be spun into new fiber without harmful chemicals. The first consumer products from this new textile fiber are estimated to be available by the end of 2024.

Award-winning circular innovation companies Spinnova and Renewcell have announced their cooperation to introduce a technology concept for scaling the production of next-generation textile fiber from textile waste. The new fiber production concept combines patented technology from both companies and advances the circularity in the fashion and textile industries.

Pioneering a circular economy in the fashion industry, Renewcell recycles cellulosic-rich textile waste such as cotton and viscose using a patented process, which transforms textile waste into a pulp product called CIRCULOSE®. This biodegradable raw material is produced from 100-percent recycled textiles and can be used to create new fiber. Until now, CIRCULOSE has been used to create man-made cellulosic fibers, such as viscose. With Spinnova’s transformative technology, the partners can turn CIRCULOSE into a new, biobased textile fiber without any harmful chemicals in the fiber spinning process. This is a remarkable step towards addressing the industry’s growing textile waste problem, while setting new standards for sustainable textile fiber production.

Spinnova has already made successful trials spinning the CIRCULOSE pulp into new textile fiber. The first batches of SPINNOVA fiber made with 100-percent CIRCULOSE have been produced for yarn and fabric development, and the first prototypes are made from a blend of cotton and SPINNOVA fiber made with CIRCULOSE.

“The fashion and textile industry needs new solutions and collaboration across its supply chain, which makes this such an exciting partnership for us. Our goal is to accelerate the fashion industry’s transition to a circular economy and explore options to scale textile-to-textile fiber production. Developing our partnership with the skilled Renewcell team has been a great pleasure and the first tests combining Renewcell’s material and Spinnova’s technology have been very promising,” said Ben Selby, Spinnova’s deputy CEO.

“The textile industry is in the middle of a massive change, when moving from a linear business model to a circular economy. Change requires new partnerships and brave, innovative players. Learning more about Spinnova’s technology has been really exciting and we can’t wait to launch the first collection made from CIRCULOSE using Spinnova’s unique fiber spinning technology,” continued Patrik Lundström, CEO at Renewcell.

The companies are currently assessing options to start scaling textile-to-textile fibre production with potential partners and expect to start developing the first consumer collection made from CIRCULOSE-based SPINNOVA fiber. The first consumer products are estimated to enter the global market at the end of 2024.

Herman Miller Introduces Fuld Nesting Chair Designed By Stefan Diez

ZEELAND, Mich. — September 12, 2023 — Herman Miller has introduced Fuld Nesting Chair designed in collaboration with Stefan Diez — a sleek, minimalist design that enables flexible configurations for workspaces.

With its refreshing aesthetic, Fuld is a standout among nesting chairs — enabling organizations to reconfigure space for different uses such as breakout sessions, corporate training, and educational events — without sacrificing style. Available in dipped-in-color options consisting of the seat, seat-back, and legs in one hue and dual-color combinations, Fuld elevates the experience of a nesting chair.

Fuld eschews the typical X shape of a nesting chair for a streamlined inverted Y with tubular arms. The back has a touch of elasticity, which keeps you comfortable as you shift. With its unique lines and variety of colors, the reimagined seating mainstay enlivens any space, even when stored in the open.

“We’re excited to welcome Stefan Diez to the Herman Miller portfolio after his work for the wider MillerKnoll collective,” said Malisa Bryant, senior vice president of Global Product, “Diez prioritizes sustainability and innovation within his designs which have long been core values for Herman Miller.”

A long-standing commitment to the environment drove Diez’s design of Fuld. Its minimalistic design and pioneering one-piece construction where the back rest, arms and back legs are one continuous piece. The chair comprises just two materials for easy recycling at the end of its lifecycle. An optional 3D Knit textile seat is also available that is made from 50 percent post-consumer recycled content, and because it’s knitted to the chair’s exact dimensions, there’s no fabric waste.

“I am thrilled to have designed the first nesting chair for Herman Miller,” said Stefan Diez. “There’s no other company that cares so much about engineering and quality. It’s very supportive, it’s quite unparalleled, very forward-thinking. The collaboration with Herman Miller never feels like it’s driven by constraints, but driven more by an idea. It’s clear what we’re working for: The product that comes out from the process is not a product that is a compromise, and that’s what I love.

The chair was previewed during MillerKnoll Design Days where it was announced as a MetropolisLikes Award Winner. It will be available to contract customers for purchase through Herman Miller and MillerKnoll dealers. Visit the Herman Miller website for additional details.
