National Composites Centre Commissions Cygnet Texkimp Filament Winding Machine For New Era Of Hydrogen Vessel Development

NORTHWICH, England — January 8, 2024 — Composites technology company Cygnet Texkimp has delivered a four-axis filament winding machine to the National Composites Centre (NCC) in Bristol, Wales, where it will form part of a new state-of-the-art manufacturing and test facility for hydrogen transportation and storage.

The multi-functional filament winding technology has been developed by Cygnet Texkimp to provide the NCC and its partners with the capability to wind all types of filament from towpregs to dry fiber and glass fiber, and all combinations of fibers and resins including high viscosity and fast cure resins.

National Composites Centre commissions Cygnet Texkimp filament winding machine for new era of hydrogen vessel development

“We’re extremely proud to see our filament winding technology forming part of the NCC’s world-leading Hydrogen Programme,” said Cygnet Texkimp CEO Luke Vardy.

“The work of the NCC and its partners stands at the forefront of an exciting new era of hydrogen tank design and development and plays an important role in anchoring this area of manufacture in the United Kingdom.

“The technology we’ve delivered offers high levels of flexibility and capability to meet the requirements of many different filament winding applications and support the NCC’s pioneering development work.”

Marcus Walls-Bruck, head of Hydrogen at the National Composites Centre said, “Acquisition of the Filament Winding machine builds on our investment in capability development for hydrogen, with this machine predominantly focused at pressure vessels.

“It will help the UK create supply chains to achieve its net-zero ambitions. A key technology that underpins our state-of-the-art design, test and manufacturing facility for hydrogen, it will be used to create pressure vessels for a number of applications, with this capability supporting industry in developing business cases and products to enter this growing market.”

The four-axis winder will form part of the NCC’s new state-of-the-art manufacturing and test facility for hydrogen transportation and storage.

The filament winder is designed to wind four tows simultaneously. Each tow has its own tension control unit and dancer arm which regulates feeding and winding tension to enable faster and more accurate winding.

A customized software package, developed by Cygnet Texkimp’s in-house team, also allows the NCC to record data including winding tension and speed, resin temperature and air pressure within the mandrel.

The filament winder is served by two four-position creels, which are designed to feed different types of fiber into the process. A towpreg creel unwinds and guides towpreg material into the winder and is an essential part of a novel solution designed to completely isolate the tension required at the bobbin from the tension desired during the winding phase, in order to ensure that the fiber is fed optimally at all times. A second, dry fiber creel feeds fibers into the process at low tension and high accuracy and is enclosed to prevent the release of airborne debris into the environment.

The machine also features two types of in-line spreading and coating capability which can be quickly and easily deployed for dry-wind applications: a temperature-controlled wet-out system with adjustable spreader bars to spread individual fiber tows for consistent resin impregnation, and a coating drum and blade to control the volume of resin applied to the fiber. Both of these methodologies will be investigated by the NCC for their suitability in winding applications across a range of applications.

NRF: Import Cargo Enters Winter Lull as Red Sea Disruptions Continue

WASHINGTON — January 8, 2024 — With the holiday season over, inbound cargo volume at the nation’s major container ports should gradually slow during the first quarter of 2024 before beginning to build again in the spring, according to the Global Port Tracker report released today by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

“This is the traditional slowdown when the supply chain gets a break after the busy holiday season, but there’s always a new challenge on the horizon,” NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said. “Attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea have been in the headlines and the disruptions caused by those attacks have once again created volatility in retail supply chains. Retailers are working with their carrier partners on mitigation strategies to limit the impact, but we are seeing longer transit times and increased costs as a result.”

Hackett Associates Founder Ben Hackett said any effect from the Red Sea attacks would most likely come at East Coast ports. Most cargo headed to the East Coast from Asia comes across the Pacific and through the Panama Canal. But some comes through the Red Sea before crossing the Atlantic, and carriers’ decision to go around the Cape of Good Hope to avoid the attacks is adding five or six days to the month-long trip from Shanghai to Savannah via the Suez Canal. And some retailers are reporting delays of as long as two weeks.

“The number of containers arriving at East Coast ports should not be directly affected if carriers add ships to maintain capacity, but shippers will have to adjust their supply chains to cope with longer transit times,” Hackett said. “We may see an increase of Asian cargo arriving at West Coast ports and then shipped east via intermodal rail, but doing so is costly and does not save that much time. As might be expected, carriers are passing on the additional voyage costs and then some.”

U.S. ports covered by Global Port Tracker handled 1.89 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units – one 20-foot container or its equivalent – in November, the latest month for which final numbers are available. That was down 8% from 2.06 million TEU in October, which was the busiest month of the year and the peak of the fall shipping season, but up 6.6% from November 2022.

Ports have not yet reported December numbers, but Global Port Tracker projected the month at 1.89 million TEU, up 9% year over year. That would bring 2023 to 22.3 million TEU, down 12.8% from 2022. Imports during 2022 totaled 25.5 million TEU, down 1.3% from the annual record of 25.8 million TEU set in 2021.

Volume is expected to rise to 1.92 million TEU in January, a year-over-year increase of 6.1%, before slowing for the remainder of the quarter. February is forecast at 1.76 million TEU, up 13.8% year over year, and March is forecast at 1.7 million TEU, up 4.7% from last year. February is traditionally the slowest month because of Lunar New Year factory shutdowns in Asia but the timing of the holiday and its impact on cargo varies. April is forecast at 1.79 million TEU, up 0.2% year over year, and May at 1.92 million, down 0.8% from last year.

Global Port Tracker, which is produced for NRF by Hackett Associates, provides historical data and forecasts for the U.S. ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle and Tacoma on the West Coast; New York/New Jersey, Port of Virginia, Charleston, Savannah, Port Everglades, Miami and Jacksonville on the East Coast, and Houston on the Gulf Coast. The report is free to NRF retail members, and subscription information is available at NRF.com/PortTracker

Kentwool Celebrates 180th Year; Announces New Leadership

GREENVILLE, S.C. — December 20, 2023 — Kentwool Co., a worsted wool yarn manufacturing company, celebrates the close of its 180th year in business, spanning five generations of Kent family ownership.

Founded in 1843, Kentwool, formerly known as The Kent Manufacturing Co., was established in Philidelphia, P.A by Philidelphia businessman and English immigrant Thomas Kent. From its inception, Kentwool has specialized in the manufacturing of premium woolen goods. Throughout its 180-year history, the company has played a significant and substantial role in some of the most monumental moments in American history, manufacturing uniforms for the Union Army in the American Civil War and supplying the U.S. Armed Forces during both World Wars.

In 1954, under the leadership of the company’s fourth-generation owner, Tom Kent, Kentwool opened a production facility in Pickens, S.C. Sixteen years later, the company’s headquarters transitioned to South Carolina, where it remains today.

In 1992, after Tom Kent’s untimely passing, his son, the late Greenville business leader and philanthropist Mark Kent, took ownership of the company at the age of 29. Under Mark’s leadership, the company rebranded in 2007, changing its name from The Kent Manufacturing Co. to Kentwool. Just three years later, Kentwool introduced consumer products, debuting their wool golf sock at the 2010 PGA Merchandise show in Orlando, Fla. Maintaining the company’s family-centric mentality, Mark’s wife Kimberly V. Kent served alongside her husband as a member of the advisory board and in-house counsel.

Kim assumed the role as owner, president, and CEO in 2017, following Mark’s passing, at which time she became the first female owner and operator in the company’s history.

After 180 years and five generations of Kent family ownership, Kentwool remains one of the leading manufacturers of premium worsted wool yarn, one of the few remaining USA-based manufacturers of its kind. Today, Kentwool harnesses its extensive history and knowledge of the wool yarn industry to produce multiple lines of premier wool socks. From fiber to fulfillment, Kentwool products are made in the USA with 100-percent USA craftsmanship and minimal environmental impact. As of 2023, Kentwool is Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) Certified, working with nature, not against it, to take a step forward in responsibly innovating for the future.

Kentwool Announces New Leadership

As Kentwool celebrates the close of its 180th year in business, the company and its leadership look ahead to the next 180 years. The company has today announced that Kim Kent, owner, president, and CEO, will transition the role of president and CEO effective today, December 20, 2023. As her successor, Kent has named Justin Ferdinand, the company’s current COO and president of Kentwool Performance. Kent will maintain her role as chairman.

Ferdinand, an accomplished and transformative leader, continues to bring extensive knowledge and expertise in building and leading collaborative teams and organizations focused on driving results through innovative strategies and culture. During his time at Kentwool, Ferdinand’s work, initiative, and dedication to people have aligned tremendously with the company’s core values, making him an excellent cultural fit to lead the organization into the next chapter. Ferdinand will be the first CEO in the company’s history not related to the Kent family.

“I’m so excited to be part of such a fantastic company rich in history and to have the privilege to lead this team in the next chapter,” Ferdinand said. “We have an aggressive growth strategy focused on leveraging the organization’s full capabilities and a tenured team that is skilled and ready to make the plans a reality. “

Ferdinand’s vision for the future is anchored in establishing Kentwool as a global multi-solutions provider of high-quality wool yarn and wool products. With his direction, the company is poised to continue to grow and navigate the evolving challenges of the textile manufacturing industry, creating and capitalizing on new landscapes and opportunities.

“Leading this company for the last six years has been such an honor for me,” Kent said. “It has been a privilege to work daily with the most committed and most talented people in the wool industry.  Now, as we make this exciting leadership transition, I look forward to Justin’s fresh perspective as he leads our team and strategically builds on the company’s incredible history and our strong commitment to our people, our process, and our products.“
