Lenzing Invests More Than 100 Million Euros In New Production Capacities For Specialty Fibers In Austria

LENZING, Austria — August 2, 2016 — The Lenzing Group is expanding its capacities for specialty fibers. Particularly the importance of the manufacturing facility in Heiligenkreuz, Burgenland, is underpinned. Further investments will be made as well at the production site in Lenzing. “We will invest more than 100 million euro over the next 20 months to expand production capacities for our high-quality botanic fibers, 70 percent at the Heiligenkreuz site and 30 percent at Lenzing”, says Lenzing’s CEO Stefan Doboczky. “Given the strong market demand this expansion will help our customers in their growth plans as well as expanding our global market leadership position for speciality fibers.”

As part of its new group strategy sCore TEN, Lenzing set the target of increasing the share of specialty fibers as a proportion of its total revenue to 50 percent by the year 2020. Specialty fibers currently account for 41.7 percent of revenue. The planned capacity expansion of 35,000 tons of specialty fibers at the sites in Heiligenkreuz and Lenzing, as well as at the site in Grimsby, Great Britain, is the first step of the announced speciality fiber expansion program of Lenzing AG. Customers will be able to take advantage of some 10,000 tons of specialty fiber capacity already by the end of this year.

The major part of investments will be carried out in the years 2016 and 2017. The Lenzing Group will fully utilize its in house engineering competence, supported by local construction companies and suppliers for these projects. The investment in Heiligenkreuz will create 25 new jobs (full-time equivalents). Lenzing AG decided to start its investment program for speciality fibers at its existing sites in Austria and the UK as it allows fast capacity ramp up. The strategic role of the Heiligenkreuz site as a key location of new types of TENCEL® premium fibers developed developed by researchers and application engineers in Lenzing in cooperation with customers is strongly underpinned.

MMI Plant Tours, Panel Sessions To Fuel Custom Solutions For Attendees’ Workplaces

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — August 3, 2016 — Tours of three nearby textile services industry production facilities including an equipment manufacturer highlight the agenda of TRSA’s annual Maintenance Management Institute (MMI), October 26-28 in New Orleans. These plant visits and ensuing discussion will focus on fulfilling MMI’s mission to provide maintenance and engineering personnel with ideas to optimize operational efficiencies and performance, minimizing downtime and maximizing equipment life.

On Oct. 26, MMI participants will join attendees of TRSA’s Production Summit and Plant Tours, which starts one day earlier at the same New Orleans hotel (Harrah’s), in visiting hospitality laundry Starr Textile Services and food and beverage linen specialist TLC Services. Two days later, the MMI agenda concludes with an optional visit to Pellerin Milnor Corp., recognized as one of the most significant outbound (export) manufacturers in the New Orleans area.

Tours will enable MMI participants to observe these facilities’ approaches to maintenance challenges and discuss with these plants’ management pressing issues the attendees face in their own operations. Debriefing sessions at Harrah’s following the laundry visits will feature these managers providing further insight into techniques demonstrated at the plants, prompting participants to consider adopting new strategies in their everyday work.

Such interaction has become an MMI hallmark. Two interactive panel sessions will facilitate this personal attention, as a “Safety Nuts and Bolts” panel will answer questions attendees submit before MMI starts. The panel will evaluate for them any safety-related maintenance issue in their facilities, whether it’s a matter of compliance or voluntary improvement.

A facilitated open forum will enable participants to inject topics of their choosing into the agenda for collaboration with panelists and other attendees in a group exercise to address a concern specific to their business. Eastman Launches Avra™ Performance Fibers

SALT LAKE CITY — August 3, 2016 — The next generation of polyester fibers was introduced to the performance apparel market today when Eastman Chemical Co. announced the launch of Avra™ Performance Fibers. Avra is a family of performance fibers enabled by a proprietary spinning technology. The first product enables a revolutionary ribbon-shaped synthetic fiber with a combination of shape and size never before seen, backed by a company with a 96-year history of manufacturing excellence.

The patented Nanotex® Dry Inside technology enables effective moisture transfer away from the skin, eliminating dampness and chaffing, in 100-percent cotton apparel, while maintaining the additional comfort aspects of garments made from the natural fiber.

Yarn Quality And Efficiency: Stepping up to Total Contamination Control With Uster

USTER, Switzerland — August 3, 2016 — Spinners are increasingly seeking to take control of the level of contamination in yarn. They need to meet customers’ quality demands exactly, using foolproof but flexible methods which also take account of mill efficiency, minimizing waste and optimizing productivity. This case study focuses on an Indian yarn manufacturer which originally invested in early-stage fiber cleaning in 2009, and has since upgraded to Total Contamination Control, combining the USTER® JOSSI VISION SHIELD and USTER QUANTUM 3.

An experienced member of the Uster sales team in India, J.C. Kumaar has a strong relationship with his customers in the south of the country. His knowledge gained over 20 years has enabled him to assist an important client to implement step-by-step improvements in contamination control, in line with the company’s goal of continual enhancement of yarn quality.

This customer made its initial move into fiber cleaning in the blowroom, with its purchase seven years ago of the Vision Shield MPIX by Jossi. Since then, the customer has stepped up its requirements, especially with regard to polypropylene contaminant removal, opting for the USTER Jossi MAGIC EYE in 2015.

The company spins yarn for the high-quality segment, typically mixing Guntur and Giza cottons to produce yarn counts of Nec 50s, 40s and 26s. A medium-sized mill, its priorities were better contamination control without increasing waste or causing more yarn clearer cuts at the winding stage.

The first stage in the upgrading of the mill’s contamination control came in 2015, explains J.C. Kumaar: “The decision was made to tackle the challenge at fiber cleaning stage. For better fiber cleaning results, the existing Jossi fiber cleaner was upgraded with the Uster Jossi Magic Eye.”

“Settings and parameters were tailored to the customer’s needs — colored and foreign fibers were main issues — and the results achieved with the Uster Jossi Magic Eye upgrade were far better than expected.”

Second stage improvements

Earlier this year, the customer again contacted Uster to investigate the capabilities of latest technologies for the move towards contamination-free yarn. At this stage, it was appropriate to introduce the unique Uster concept of Total Contamination Control, featuring Uster Jossi Vision Shield and Uster Quantum 3. These systems represent the most sophisticated technologies available for detecting contamination at the beginning and end of the yarn production process: in fiber preparation and yarn clearing. All types of foreign matter — natural and man-made — can be identified and removed, even white polypropylene.

The combination of Uster Jossi Vision Shield and Uster Quantum guarantees the maximum contamination detection rate. With Total Contamination Control two-points-approach eliminating unwanted material in yarn the spinner can adjust the machine settings perfectly to meet precise yarn quality specifications, while also managing their own productivity goals.

Based on the good experience from the existing solution, Kumaar’s customer again chose Uster equipment for its second blowroom installation. The Uster Jossi Vision Shield T and Uster Jossi Magic Eye were installed. On the winders Uster Quantum 3 was used for years. The delighted customer called to share the performance results. The feedback showed that contamination control at fiber cleaning was now performing so well that the number of clearer cuts at winding decreased by 50% for polypropylene (PP) as well as for foreign matter defects (FD). A detailed report showed that PP-related cuts decreased from 24 to 11 per 100 kilometers FD cuts reduced from 22 to 10 per 100 kilometers.

Analysis of the waste levels in the mill produced further strong evidence. Comparing the results from the upgraded first blowroom with the new installation of Uster Jossi Vision Shield T with Uster Jossi Magic Eye, waste was reduced by a factor of three to four. The figures showed a drop from 100-120 kg per day in Blowroom 1 to 30-40 kg per day in Blowroom 2.

“This customer is again satisfied with the Uster fiber cleaner combined with the Uster Jossi Magic Eye. The loss of good fiber has been reduced significantly,” says J.C. Kumaar. “He also reports that overall process performance has improved through all stages of preparation and spinning.

Double security and balanced production

Total Contamination Control is a doubly-secure method for controlling unwanted material at both start and finish of yarn production. Only the unique combination of the Uster Jossi Vision Shield and Uster Quantum offers this security. It also allows spinners to balance waste at fiber cleaning and cuts at winding, to optimize production efficiency while achieving the right quality for their customers downstream.

“My customer in this case uses Uster Quantum 3 for fine-tuning of contamination removal to meet their own customers’ exact quality requirements,” Kumaar says. “This flexibility means that Total Contamination Control is ideal not only for spinners serving markets which are highly-sensitive to contamination issues, but also for those producing yarns for less critical applications. Each mill can precisely target their control settings, opting for, or against, less waste or higher cut levels. Improved SDL Atlas PnuBurst Offers Elastic Fabric Testing

ROCK HILL, S.C. — August 2, 2016 — SDL Atlas is excited to introduce the next generation PnuBurst Burst Strength Tester. The new design comes with improved touch screen controls to make test selection and initiation much quicker and easier. The instrument also features clamp pressure control through the touch screen to facilitate the requirements of certain tests such as those required for Marks & Spencer suppliers. Laser measurement provides precise bursting distension heights.

The improved PnuBurst also offers the new capability of testing elastic fabrics.

The new, optional ElastiTest Software gives users the ability to perform a cyclic test on elastic textile samples. Simulating repeated stretching action provides users with information on how a fabric maintains its strength and recovery after being stretched in three dimensions.

The software allows the technician to set up a test routine by specifying if they want to maintain either inflation pressure or distension height as constant. The other attribute will then become the variable which shows how the sample performs. The cycle can be designed to inflate at a certain rate, hold the maximum point for a period of time, and then deflate at a determined rate. This test provides a much better real world analysis of an elastic fabric in use than the straight stretch tests performed on a tensile tester.

All of the previous notable features of the PnuBurst still exist in the enhanced model including:

  • Automatic Flow Control — to ensure the burst happens in the required window of time as prescribed by the selected standard.
  • Automatic Diaphragm Correction — to subtract the pressure it takes to inflate the bare diaphragm from test results to achieve real bursting strength measurements.

METYX Composites Doubles Production Site In Turkey

ISTANBUL, Turkey — July 22, 2016 — METYX Composites, a division of textiles company Telateks A.S., is in the process of doubling its production facilities at its main manufacturing centre in Manisa, Turkey. Land and buildings adjacent to the existing factory in the Manisa Industrial Zone became available earlier this year, which Telateks recently acquired. The existing factory is being linked to the newly acquired site, which combined provides a total of 2.3 hectares (23,000 sq. m) of production and warehousing space. The expanded site is almost twice the size of the current factory, providing METYX with the space to not only double weaving capacity for glass and carbon fibre multiaxial fabrics, but to also add more tooling and kitting capacity.

The new site is planned to be fully operational later this year, with additional staff being recruited. The expanded METYX factory will include additional new production lines for both glass and carbon fibre multiaxial fabrics and new CNC machining centres for composite plug and mould making. To meet increasing demand, especially from the wind energy sector locally, the existing kitting services at Manisa are also being further expanded; at both Manisa and the METYX Composites factory in Hungary a full kitting service is provided, supplying customers with ‘make to order’ kits for core material, glass and carbon fibre reinforcements and vacuum consumables, not only for wind energy, but also for marine, automotive, and other industrial applications.

Additional new warehousing facilities are also being constructed at Manisa to further improve stock holding and distribution services from the main production site, which serves customers nationally across Turkey, and also supplies a growing number of METYX Composites export customers.

The branding will debut at Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in a redesigned booth, where visitors experience the latest in odor control science at the Microban “Fresh Bar,” comparing products that have Microban technologies against products that do not.

In conjunction with this relaunch of the textiles division, Microban expanded its consumer facing website, TheCleanerHome.com, providing comprehensive home cleaning tips and products using Microban. It will add “the closet” as its latest installment featuring more than 15 brand partners including Calvin Klein, Dansko®, Hook & Tackle®, K-Swiss®, Reebok, Rogers Corporation, Spanx®, Teva®, Under Armour®, amongst others.

Texo Trade Services Introduces Carpet 820

WADDINXVEEN, the Netherlands — August 2, 2016 — Texo Trade Services, expert in transfer print media and printable textiles, brings a new promotional carpet to the market: Carpet 820. The number refers to the weight per square meter: 820 gram. The carpet has a 100% polyester non-woven front that is printable with every desired design by using sublimation transfer. Carpet 820 is cost-friendlier than ‘normal’ carpet and ideal for mats, exhibition carpets, catwalks and other promotional events.

The printing method by means of sublimation transfer is ideal for numerous promotional purposes: logo’s, photographs and illustrations are printed dead-sharp and in very deep and vidid colours. This gives a high attention value.

Safety aspects

Not only the weight and printing quality are important unique selling points of the Carpet 820, safety is also one. The special backing ensures that the carpet lies perfectly flat and doesn’t need to be taped to the floor, which can give a sloppy effect. It remains where it is, without the risk of slipping. In addition, the carpet meets the fire retardancy stand Cfl-S1 in accordance with EN 13501-1. This is one of the highest standards in the carpet industry and is similar to DIN 4102 – B1.
