Downlite New Wastewater Recovery System Successfully Installed

MASON, Ohio — January 4, 2017 — Downlite — a down and feather processor and supplier of responsibly-sourced performance fills to the outdoor, home furnishings and hospitality markets — recently unveiled its new wastewater recovery system that allows Downlite to recycle and reuse up to 99 percent of the water used to clean and sanitize its down and feather fills — saving up to 40 million gallons of water annually.

Downlite partnered with Ohio-based water-treatment specialists, Artesian Capital Partners (ACP), who designed and constructed the system, and now operates it off-site.

“Water is the new oil,” said Josh Werthaiser, Downlite CFO. “With growing concerns over water scarcity and increasingly stringent municipal water-treatment requirements, we took on this significant and complex initiative, which took over a year, in our endeavor to become a greener company.”

Downlite’s down processing facility based just outside of Cincinnati, has the capacity to supply more than 100,000 lbs. of clean and ready down fill material per week, which requires a large quantity of water to ensure the raw materials have been sufficiently cleaned and sterilized.

“We use up to 120,000 gallons of water per day when our three giant washers are in use to ensure high-quality cleaning,” said Kevin Borgquist, Downlite director of Processing/Sourcing. “Since the system was installed in October, we’ve saved about eight million gallons of water.”

How the wastewater recovery system works

Waste water from the down processing machines travels through Downlite’s 65,000 square foot plant to the treatment system and into an aerobic basin to remove organic waste. The water then moves to membrane filtration to remove any remaining waste. The clean water is stored and sent through ozone disinfection before it goes back to the plant for reuse. The sludge recovered from filtration is gathered and composted.

Downlite’s wastewater recovery system is the latest in a series of ongoing environmental and sustainability initiatives, which include installing LED lighting in its plants and office buildings, adherence to bluesign® certification and down traceability, and the development of TDS and RDS down standards.

“We are always looking at how we can minimize environmental impact, and what Downlite can do about it,” said Werthaiser.

Two More UniFirst Plants Earn Hygienically Clean Food Safety Certification

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — January 3, 2017 — UniFirst Corp. facilities in Tampa, Fla., and Tulsa, Ok., are the company’s newest recipients of TRSA Hygienically Clean Food Safety certification, reflecting their commitment to best management practices (BMPs) in laundering as verified by TRSA inspection and their capability to produce hygienically clean textile product cleanliness as quantified by ongoing microbial testing.

The certification confirms a laundry’s dedication to compliance and processing garments and other textile products using BMPs as described in its quality assurance documentation, the focal point for TRSA inspectors’ evaluation of critical control points that minimize risk.

This process eliminates subjectivity by focusing on outcomes and results that verify textiles cleaned in these facilities meet appropriate hygienically clean standards, and BMPs for servicing animal processing, dairies, fruit/vegetable, bakeries, grain and other food and beverage industry segments.

UniFirst now has 14 TRSA Hygienically Clean Food Safety certified facilities, more than any other textile services operator. In addition to those in Tampa and Tulsa, these are located in Stockton and Ontario, Calif.; Stratford, Conn.; Albany, Ga.; Boston; Landover, Md.; Charlotte and Kernersville, N.C.; Lebanon and Nashua, N.H.; Amarillo, Texas; and Richmond, Va.

The TRSA Hygienically Clean Food Safety protocol examines a laundry’s Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) practices, including its techniques for:

  • Conducting hazard analysis;
  • Determining CCPs, monitoring their control, and corrections if required;
  • Validating and verifying HACCP system effectiveness; and
  • Documenting and record-keeping to show ongoing conformance.

Inspection and re-inspection verify laundry practices including washing procedures (detergent formulas, temperature, disinfectant, pH, extraction), drying, garment inspection and transportation. Each certified laundry plant’s operational flowchart is evaluated, ensuring these procedures (as well as pickup, unloading and sorting of soiled items and sorting of clean laundry) are mapped. Additionally, employees’ use of personal protective equipment is documented.

Inspectors also evaluate practices relevant to handling and processing textile products used in food manufacturing/processing establishments for adherence to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) directives.

“More and more, we’re seeing our customers in food-related industries looking for third-party validation that our specialized Product Protection Process and our hygienically clean standards are consistent with HACCP guidelines,” said Adam Soreff, director of marketing and communications at UniFirst, with headquarters based in Massachusetts. “Working with a Hygienically Clean Food Safety certified laundry helps reassure them that their managed uniform program is working in concert with their own food safety protocols to help them ensure food safety for consumers.”

The 2017 spring edition of Yarn Expo will be held from March 15-17 in hall 5.1 of the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai), and its scale is expected to jump by 20 percent, occupying 18,000 square meters (m2) (2016: 15,000 m2), to accommodate the increase in exhibitor participation. To take advantage of this diverse buyer profile, a number of international suppliers have already confirmed their participation this year. “Yarn Expo engages a broad range of buyers, and it’s an ideal stage for us to introduce the company and products to our target buyers as well as to establish solid business relationships with them,” said Peter Dong, senior manager of Birla Jingwei Fibres Co Ltd (Aditya Birla Group). Oerlikon Barmag Reports Industrial Yarns Still In Demand

REMSCHEID, Germany — January 2, 2017 — Last year, the Swizterland-based systems manufacturer Oerlikon Barmag secured an above-average number of industrial yarns projects. The general trend was once again confirmed within the context of the ITMA Asia + CITME in October 2016.

This shows the sustainable success of the comprehensive range of innovative process solutions offered for the entire industrial yarns product program. With its global network, Oerlikon Barmag is positioning itself as a leading partner and a solutions provider of efficient ‘from-melt-to-yarn’ production processes.

The new systems that will be commissioned over this year are primarily focused on the Asian region; however, manufacturing industrial yarns is also interesting for producers in Europe due to the comparably high margins and specialized areas of application. “We are experiencing huge demand for industrial yarn systems. Customers are asking for products that offer an interesting margin, such as specialties and industrial yarns, for example”, commented Oliver Lemke, regional sales director, Oerlikon Barmag.

Stefan Becker, senior expert Research and Development, added: “What has, for example, been very well received by our customers is that our current machine concepts for industrial fine-titer nylon yarns allow us to offer configurations that are specifically tailored to the product requirements of the end application of these yarns, such as tents, tarpaulins, parachutes, etc. Here, the focus of the machine design is both on the product quality of the yarns in typical titer ranges of between 20 and 70 den and on production efficiency and, above all, on the optimization of the conversion costs.”

The vast majority of the additional output of polyester and polyamide yarns will be deployed in the automotive sector (airbags, safety belts, tire cord). A further application area focuses on the broad spectrum of geotextiles and products for textile construction. And the continuing trend towards polyester yarns as a substitute for polyamide — prevalent among many product categories such as airbags, for example — is being confirmed by our projects. This is above all due to the constantly improving properties of polyester with simultaneously considerably lower raw material costs. Despite all this, the market for industrial yarns continues to diversify and develop very much in line with the specific end applications. Here, the rising demand for so-called high-performance tires is resulting in both increased demand for PET HMLS yarns and in the greater output of PA66 yarns for use in cap ply.

Heimtextil 2017: Durst Unveils Digital Home Textiles Portfolio with Pigment Application by Probo

BRIXEN, Italy — December 23, 2016 — Durst, a manufacturer of advanced digital production technologies, is unveiling its extensive Alpha Series portfolio with multi-pass inkjet printing systems for the digital production of home textiles and fashion at Heimtextil 2017 in Hall 6 at Stand C16. Depending on what they are used for, Alpha printing systems offer printing widths from 190 to 330 cm and can be configured with up to 8 colors and 64 Alpha-S printheads. With a native resolution of 600 dpi and printing speeds of up to 620 lm/h, they boast 24/7 industrial-scale production capacities, and can be used directly and with tremendous flexibility. The various samples and applications produced by Probo and on display at the trade fair stand will show visitors exactly what these systems can do. In February 2016, the Dutch web-to-print supplier installed a high-performance Alpha 330 inkjet printing in its machine park in Dokkum in order to be able to offer home textiles and accessories alongside its existing soft signage portfolio. The great thing is that clients are able to order their printed items – from yard goods to large volumes – directly in the Probo online website. Orders received by 4:30 p.m. can even be shipped the next day.

This efficiency is due not just to the performance of the Alpha Series and digital workflow, but also to the Greentex pigment ink developed by Durst that require no pre- or post-treatment when used with standard materials such as cotton or polyester. This makes the production processes much shorter and considerably more cost-effective regardless of the size of the print run.

The Durst Textile Printing team at the trade fair stand will provide information about these and other options for the Alpha Series such as intelligent feeder systems that adapt automatically to the various textile materials and roll circumferences, and will also be on hand to arrange individual appointments.

ES FiberVisions Expands Globally

BANGKOK — December 22, 2016 — On December 7, ES FiberVisions (ESFV), a joint venture between FiberVisions LLC — a subsidiary of Thailand’s Indorama Ventures PCL, and Japan’s JNC Corp. — held an opening ceremony to celebrate the completion of its newest plant in Rayong, Thailand. This state-of-the-art facility was constructed adjacent to Thailand’s largest fiber facility to expand ESFV’s global production capacity and produce the highest quality bicomponent fiber in a hygienic environment. The plant has 14,000 tons of capacity per year and was designed to allow for future expansion as ESFV continues to invest globally to meet the needs of its customers.

The ES FiberVisions joint venture is the world’s largest producer of polyolefin bicomponent fibers and has production facilities in China, Denmark, Japan, Thailand and the United States.

More than 100 government representatives, customers, suppliers and contractors attended the opening ceremony.  It was hosted by Aloke Lohia, Group CEO of Indorama Ventures; Dr. Yasuyuki Gotoh, CEO and president of JNC’ Yozo Shimomura, chairman of ESFV and managing executive officer of JNC; and Tom Zaiser, CEO of FiberVisions.

Lohia noted that this plant reflects the partners’ strong commitment to growth worldwide and “will allow ES FiberVisions to continue delivering the differentiated bicomponent fibers that our customers need in order to be successful in their businesses.”

Gotoh commented: “At this Thai factory, a key center for supply to the Southeast Asian region, we have introduced global cutting-edge technology. We believe that the state-of-the-art ES fiber produced here will not only contribute to the development of the Thai economy but also help all the citizens of countries in the ASEAN region lead more comfortable lives.”

Zaiser added, “It is only with the success of our customers that we achieve the ultimate goal of this project.”

The partners also announced that they would be expanding bicomponent manufacturing at the FiberVisions facility in Covington, Ga.  The expanded capacity is expected to be on-line at the end of 2017.  This initiative will support the growing need for bicomponent fibers in the hygiene and industrial sectors in the Americas.

Growth in Asia is being further supported with a previously announced expansion of the ES FiberVisions Suzhou Co. Ltd. plant in Jiangsu Province, China. This facility started production in 2014.  The expansion will double its capacity to over 28,000 tons per year and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2018. A ground-breaking ceremony for a new warehouse and ancillary facilities was held in mid-December.

Shimomura stated: “With this investment in Suzhou, we will accelerate our growth in China and Asia and will secure the capacity that meets the strong demand for our high quality bicomponent fibers. As a pioneer of bicomponent fiber, ES FiberVisions continues to be the leading supplier in the world.”
