EURATEX: Concrete Steps For A Global Sustainable Garment Value Chains

BRUSSELS — April 27, 2017 — EURATEX welcomes the European Commission new working document and the efforts of the European Parliament for global sustainable garment value chains and looks forward to supporting the achievement of concrete results in the next steps.

April 26, Commissioner Mimica intervened at a Rana Plaza commemoration event and presented the working document Sustainable garment value chain through EU development action which outlines the European Union response for more sustainable textile and clothing value chain within development policy. The commissioner focused on intervention areas for financial support, promotion of best practices and awareness raising among the consumers.

Today, the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have voted a new Report on the EU Flagship initiative on the garment sector calling the European Commission to take action across all aspects of sustainability, social, environmental and financial, while stressing human-rights issues. The vote marks the conclusion of a long research in which the MEPs invested efforts to dig in the complexity of the global garment value chain and to investigate options to boost fair and responsible business practices globally.

Moving on to the next steps, EURATEX believes the efforts shall focus on building upon the achievements of successful voluntary initiatives and refraining from creations of new mandatory due diligence ruling.

Tackling a global issue, we welcome the Commission and the Parliament acknowledgements of the need to act globally and to align with ILO standards and the last OECD due diligence guidance which was presented last February.

Fair and effective solutions can only be produced by collaboration with all parties; we therefore wish to stress the need to seize the momentum for institutions, industry and society to work on: i) building up on the achievements from successful voluntary initiatives, ii) refrain from creating new mandatory ruling, iii) consider diversity along the value chain, especially the features of the European industry and its SMEs and iv) facilitate transparency and information for the consumers, to ultimately help people choosing sustainable products.

EURATEX reiterates its commitment to constructively work together for fair policy proposals which can deliver results on the ground and make a difference.

Performance Days, Munich: Amni Soul Eco® By Solvay Group, The First Biodegradable 6.6 Polyamide Yarn In The World

MUNICH — April 27, 2017 — Biodegradability is an increasingly important element in respect of fashion sustainability, and more specifically of functional textiles.
This topic will be the focus of one of the main workshops at this year’s edition of the Performance Days in Munich, the benchmarking exhibition for innovations and trends in the area of functional fabrics.

This discussion will be chaired by the independent journalist Sophie Bramel, Consultant Technical Editor for World Sports Activewear (WSA). The panelists include Daniela Antunes, business development manager at Solvay; Christin Glöckner, team leader R&D of the Hohenstein Institute; Sarah King, director business development at Smartfiber; and Matthias Böhme, sales manager at Lavalan.

The question that will be posed during the round table is “To biodegrade or not?”; Daniela Antunes gives an affirmative answer, quoting as virtuous example Amni Soul Eco®, the innovative yarn developed by Solvay specifically with regard to the issue of textile waste and to pave the way for sustainability pure and simple.

“Every year more than one billion garments are thrown away, thus contributing to landfilling and pollution of the planet caused by waste,”  said Antunes. “For this reason at Solvay we have decided to produce a material which is eco-friendly every step of the way, as well as being highly performing, not only while it is used but also when it is discarded.” Having already pioneered the distant infrared ray technology with Emana®, the yarn that uses body heat to care for the skin, after several years of research the Solvay group has now designed Amni Soul Eco which, thanks to an enhanced polyamide 6.6 formula, takes less than three years to biodegrade, unlike most synthetic fibers, which makes it possible to manufacture garments which decompose rapidly.

This added value complements all the functional advantages of polyamide 6.6. “Amni Soul Eco has a green heart which goes together with its high performance in terms of quality, durability, comfort, breathability, easy washing and fast drying which are typical of traditional polyamide yarns,”  explained Antunes.

The biodegradability properties of Amni Soul Eco, in actual fact, influence not only the product’s shelf life because they become apparent only under specific landfilling conditions where there is no oxygen and where bacteria specializing in anaerobic decomposition are found.

This means that the environmental impact is drastically reduced, as is the amount of waste left to future generations.

From an all-round sustainability perspective, moreover, Amni Soul Eco is also 100-percent recyclable and reusable, as well as being produced with environment-friendly processes and Oeko-Tex® certified (standard 100, class 1).

In Europe, Amni Soul Eco is manufactured and distributed by FULGAR, which has recently received a positive evaluation of its products and production process, through the Environmental Impact Assessment (LCA) – Life Cycle Assessment.

The decision to choose Fulgar is an important example of Solvay’s effort for a responsible development strategy.

Amni Soul Eco thus launches a strong signal to the industry; it’s a unique opportunity to safeguard the environment and be on the cutting edge in the era of discerning consumption and eco-fashion.

Library Experts Work With Public To Save Family Heirlooms, Collectibles

CHICAGO — April 25, 2017 — Each year millions of Americans put their family keepsakes at risk because they lack the knowledge of how to store and preserve items. This week is Preservation Week®, April 23-29, and librarians and library workers are offering their expertise on how to preserve family heirlooms and collectibles.

This year’s Preservation Week® theme is textile preservation, and participating libraries will celebrate by offering special programs and services to connect library users with preservation tools, promote the importance of preservation and strive to enhance knowledge of preservation issues among the public. Institutions around the world also will spread the word by using the hashtag #preswk to showcase their preservation programs and services.

During the celebration, textile designer, teacher, author and Preservation Week® Honorary Chair Franklin Habit will share his expertise on how to preserve family heirlooms and treasures. Textile preservation tips are available at http://bit.ly/2p1tTE2.

“There is no greater honor than to work alongside expert librarians and library workers who are transforming lives through education and lifelong learning, said Habit. “As an enthusiastic preservation-novice who is tasked with safeguarding multigenerational family treasures, I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences with the public as I work to preserve fabrics and patterns from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.”

Sponsored by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of the American Library Association, Preservation Week® was created in 2010 because some 630 million items in collecting institutions require immediate attention and care. Eighty percent of these institutions have no paid staff assigned to collections care, and 22 percent have no collections care personnel at all. Some 2.6 billion items are not protected by an emergency plan. As natural disasters of recent years have taught us, these resources are in jeopardy should a disaster strike. Personal, family and community collections are equally at risk.

Preservation Week® is a registered trademark of the ALA. For more information regarding Preservation Week® visit http://www.ala.org/preservationweek.

Preservation Week® Honorary Chair Franklin Habit and library preservation experts are available for interviews. Please contact Macey Morales, Deputy Director, ALA Public Awareness Office, 312-280-4393, mmorales@ala.org, to schedule opportunities. Preservation Week artwork is also available at http://tinyurl.com/7wxb699 .

The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) is the national association for information providers who work in collections and technical services, such as acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, preservation and continuing resources in digital and print formats.

Brandix Rolls Out TUKA Systems For All Divisions Worldwide

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — April 26, 2017 — Brandix, one of the largest apparel exporters in Sri Lanka, has invested millions of dollars toward technology to become the leader in fast fashion. Most recently, it has implemented Tukatech’s innovative apparel technology solutions in factories for all divisions around the world. Various divisions within Brandix have partnered with Tukatech since 2012, but this is the first time the group has decided to implement any one technology system for the entire company.

According to Dave Ranasinghe, director of Brandix Group, the company chose to replace all CAD systems with Tukatech: “because of the measurable results. We tested every CAD system available, and Tukatech’s SMARTmark system gave us better fabric savings than any known software, enough to justify the entire purchase. The TUKAplan systems, which were customized for us, seamlessly integrate with our other ERP systems and help us to plan our cutting operations, which gives us even greater savings in raw materials, time and personnel. I am also very impressed with TUKAteam’s professional implementation. They helped us engineer all our processes from design and development to spreading and cutting. We really didn’t just buy the software, we partnered with industry experts who are helping us get better results.”

Feroz Omar, director, Brandix Group, added: “The Tukatech systems helped us in the enhancement of speed and accuracy of first patterns; by organizing the database and blocks, we are able to use good data to make better fitting garments at the first attempt. Another great innovation for us was the ability to handle 3-D sample-making. It helped reduce time and cost in our sample development process by systematically taking off the sample development calendar. Instead of the standard process of cutting, sewing and evaluating on dummies, we’ve reduced a few iterations by testing with 3-D virtual sewing and making only the best-fitted sample. Such savings are very important in the reduction of development costs, especially where the cost of development is amortized over small quantities. TUKA3D and TUKAcloud help organize the data, collaborate internal teams and eventually all the buyers, thereby reducing the time, cost and workforce on both sides of the value chain.”

“I have worked with many great companies but I can honestly say that Brandix is unique in their proactive pursuit of excellence. They are not afraid to disrupt their processes even when it looks like everything is running fine. They constantly re-train their personnel, implement technologies that improve efficiencies, and prepare for a sustainably long-term business. You can see this philosophy at every level of management. As a fellow ‘disrupter,’ I am excited to help one of our largest partners in technology to lead the way in the fast fashion market,” comments Ram Sareen, founder of Tukatech.

Archroma To Showcase “Colors Enhanced. Performance Enhanced. Sustainability Enhanced.” At Igatex Pakistan 2017

REINACH, Switzerland — April 26, 2017 — Archroma will present at Igatex Pakistan 2017 some of its most innovative technologies, under the motto: “IT’S WONDERFUL. Colors enhanced, performance enhanced, sustainability enhanced”.

True to its long-term commitment to sustainability and innovation, Archroma will present solutions that combine performance, cost optimization and responsible textile production.

Colors Enhanced
Drawing on its extensive formulation and technical know-how in dyestuff and pigments, Archroma will showcase at Igatex Pakistan 2017 some of its latest innovations:

ADVANCED DENIM technology — When employing Archroma’s ADVANCED DENIM technology, based on “Denim-Ox” and “Pad/Sizing-Ox” dyeing processes, users can reduce water consumption and wastewater by up to 92 percent, eliminate up to 63 percent of the usual cotton waste, and save up to 30 percent in energy costs compared to traditional Indigo processes. Archroma estimates that the use of this technology allowed savings of about 700 million liters of water in 2012 alone. Just imagine how much water could be used if more manufacturers would join the ADVANCED DENIM revolution.

Denisol® Indigo 30 liq — Archroma’s Denisol® Indigo 30 liq brings indigo back to its roots by manufacturing the pre-reduced indigo solution at a “zero liquid discharge” plant in Jamshoro, creating stock available locally; and therefore meeting the demands of customers without complicated logistics or unnecessary costs. With the manufacture of Denisol® Indigo 30 liq in a “zero liquid discharge” facility, consumption of water and energy is reduced significantly, and manufacturing wastes are converted into sludge. Less indigo is also required to achieve the same color depth.

EarthColors — This new range of dyes is created from agricultural waste: almond shells, saw palmetto, rosemary leaves, etc. They can be used to provide rich red, brown and green colors to denim and casualwear. The information about the individual batches of color and the garments production route is available to brand owners to be put on hang tags to be attached to each item of clothing and accessed using Near Field Communications (NFC), a sophisticated and consumer friendly technology incorporated into smartphones. With EarthColors, Archroma helps brand owners and textile mills by letting the consumer know how the colors of their clothes are made, and where the raw materials come from.

Performance Enhanced
By offering a constant flow of eco-advanced and innovative new process and functional chemicals, Archroma provides solutions that combine performance, safety and low impact on resources.

SmartRepel® Hydro — SmartRepel® Hydro supports the increasing adoption of eco-advanced materials and production processes by textile producers and brand owners. This new range is Archroma’s nature-friendlier protection that keeps cotton, polyester and polyamide textiles dry. The unique technology offers exceptional, durable water repellency and is not based on fluorine. SmartRepel Hydro produces a soft hand feel and outstanding breathability – the perfect long-lasting, high-performance finish for weatherproof garments.

Inkpresso® — Archroma, together with InkSitu, a Swiss technology provider, introduces for the very first time at ITMA 2015 a pioneering system that Archroma believes will mark a turnaround in the textile digital printing market. Inkpresso will change the way inks are supplied to digital printers. Inkpresso brings together benefits that were unattainable so far in inkjet printing: Production flexibility, no shelf-life problems, a larger color spectrum and the possibility of an individual coloristic fingerprint.

Sustainability Enhanced
For all of us, inner beauty matters just as much as outer beauty. Brand owners and retailers around the world are taking action to evaluate the environmental impact of textile treatment, dyeing and finishing processes in response to consumer concerns.

Archroma’s engagement in favor of a more sustainable textile industry is deeply rooted in everything it does. In 2012, after more than two years of development, the company launched a game-changing service called ONE WAY. ONE WAY is designed to demonstrate to textile manufacturers, brands and retailers that it is possible to bring together the dual objectives of ecology and economy. The tool provides a fast, measurable and reliable approach to the selection of chemical product and resource-saving process solutions.

We are constantly improving this tool. In 2014, Archroma added its portfolio of ZDHC MRSL-compliant chemicals and dyes to the ONE WAY sustainability calculation tool. ONE WAY has received industry recognition with the 2013 ICIS Best Business Innovation Award.

“At Archroma,” notes Mujtaba Rahim, CEO of Archroma Pakistan Ltd., “we continuously challenge the status quo in the deep belief that we can make our industry sustainable, and we do this using the strong foundation of an expertise built over more than 130 years. We are very excited to meet customers, brands, retailers and consumers in Pakistan, and show them how Archroma can support them in the needs and challenges they face on their own markets.”
