SEATTLE — March 1, 2018 —  Fitcode, a fashion-data company that pairs consumers with jeans that fit, has expanded with the launch of a men’s fit tool.

Previously available for women’s denim (including petite and plus), Fitcode’s fit solution will now be available for men’s denim, in response to industry and consumer demand. The men’s experience launched in partnership with Silver Jeans Co.™, an existing Fitcode partner.

“We want to provide a personalized shopping experience for all our consumers,” says Mike G. Girardin, director of eCommerce at Silver Jeans Co. “We’ve seen a lift in our online women’s sales using Fitcode, so adding men’s denim to the tool is the natural next step.”

Fitcode’s women’s fit tool has been integrated on silverjeans.com since fall 2017. Visitors to the site can now take the Fitcode fit quiz and shop personalized, fit-based style recommendations across departments. Fitcode users are at least three times more likely to purchase.

“Men’s has always been next for Fitcode,” said Rian Buckley, Fitcode cofounder and CEO. “It represents a sizable market opportunity and fit is the top purchase driver for male and female denim shoppers. We’re thrilled to be launching this experience with Silver and look forward to continuing our successful partnership.”

Menswear Chain Bachrach Closes Its Remaining Stores

LOS ANGELES — March 1, 2018 — Bachrach is closing its doors after 140 years, presenting menswear shoppers with the opportunity to have the renowned “Bachrach look” at discounts of up to 50 percent off. All told, millions of dollars in stylish, high-end inventory — signature Bachrach suits, shirts, pants, accessories and more — are available at 14 store-closing sales across eight states, as well as at bachrach.com. Great American Group and Tiger Group are conducting the liquidations on behalf of the retailer’s creditors.

The Los Angeles-based chain had briefly emerged from bankruptcy after an earlier round of store closures, but filed for Chapter 11 again on February 16, 2018, in California Central Bankruptcy Court/CN# 2:18-bk-11744.

Scott Carpenter, president of GA Retail Solutions, noted that Bachrach, which was founded in 1877, is a historic retailer with a specific style and top-notch customer service. “Its loyal clientele associates the name not only with menswear of exceptional quality and style, but also with highly-trained salespeople who are adept at helping them look their best,” he said. “You walk into Bachrach and they put together an entire outfit for you, right down to the tie pin and the pocket square.”

The store closings are underway at malls and other retail properties in Texas, Virginia, New Jersey, Tennessee, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana and Illinois.

The inventory being sold includes double-breasted, slim-fit, modern-fit and three-piece suits; dress shirts, sport shirts and sweaters; dress and casual pants; denim and jeans; coats, blazers and vests; and accessories such as ties, label pins, cufflinks and pocket squares, most of which are from the Bachrach brand. “Bachrach is well-known for the way it balances universal appeal while always staying edgy,” Carpenter said. “All of the elements of Bachrach’s signature look, from boutonnieres to blazers, are available.”

Best known in the Midwest, the chain had at one time operated 32 stores. “Margins in the menswear sector have been shrinking due to declining foot traffic at malls, stiff competition from e-commerce retailers and significant shifts in consumer spending patterns,” Carpenter noted. “Unfortunately, Bachrach’s store locations were unable to survive these competitive pressures, despite its strengths, such as high-quality merchandise and customer service.”

Furniture, fixtures and equipment in the 14 stores are also available for purchase. Online shoppers will also find discounts of up to 50 percent off at Bachrach.com for approximately the next four to six weeks.

Jiangsu Sailboat Accepts World’s Largest Single-Train Coal-To-Chemicals Plant From Honeywell UOP

DES PLAINES, Ill. — March 1, 2018 — Honeywell today announced that Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical Co. Ltd. has accepted a new methanol-to-olefins (MTO) unit provided by Honeywell UOP, and that the plant is operating and has met all guarantees. With a production capacity of 833,000 metric tons per year, the unit is the largest single-train MTO unit in the world.

The Sailboat facility in Lianyungang City in Jiangsu Province manufactures propylene to make acrylonitrile for clothing and fabrics, and high-performance polymers used in automotive parts, hard hats and other hard plastic products. The plant also produces ethylene for ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers that are used to make adhesives, foams, medical devices, photovoltaic cells, and other products, and C4 olefins for butadiene, an ingredient in synthetic rubber.

“The Jiangsu Sailboat unit is now, by far, the largest single-train MTO unit in the world,” said John Gugel, vice president and general manager of Honeywell UOP’s Process Technology and Equipment business. “At this scale, Honeywell UOP’s Advanced MTO process leads the industry in terms of scale and operating efficiency.”

The two most widely used components to make plastics are ethylene and propylene, and both have traditionally been derived from crude oil. Regions such as China that lack domestic sources of crude oil have turned to MTO technology to take advantage of alternative feedstocks such as coal and natural gas.

Jiangsu Sailboat chose the Advanced MTO process because it produces the highest yields of light olefins at the lowest cost of production, with the lowest catalyst consumption and the lowest operating cost. In addition, the unit is configured for production of C4 olefins as well as ethylene and propylene.

Honeywell UOP’s Advanced MTO process combines the UOP/Hydro MTO process and the Total/UOP Olefin Cracking Process to significantly increase yields and feedstock efficiency. The process converts methanol from coal and natural gas into ethylene and propylene. At the heart of the technology are UOP’s proprietary catalysts, which make it possible to efficiently adjust the ratio of propylene and ethylene produced so operators can most effectively meet demand for those products.

Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical Co. Ltd. is a wholly-owned subsidiary company of Shenghong Holding Group, located in Xuwei new district Industrial Park, Lianyungang City, Jiangsu province. When fully completed, the 500-hectare facility will produce about 2.5 million tons of short-supply high-end petrochemical products annually.

Arkema At JEC World 2018

COLOMBES, France — March 5, 2018 — At JEC 2018, March 6-8, 2018, at Paris Villepinte, Arkema will be showcasing its unique offering of innovative advanced materials and cutting-edge solutions to meet growing demand for lightweighting structures in the transportation, wind power, construction and sport sectors. The emphasis will be on our latest developments, with particular focus on the Elium® thermoplastic resins.

Elium®, a choice material for the wind power market

Following the manufacture in 2017 of a 9 meter demonstration wind turbine blade from the Elium thermoplastic resin, a further milestone has now been reached: a 25 meter blade has been manufactured validating the feasibility of producing these components on an industrial scale.

This project aims to fit the oldest wind turbines with new more efficient 2 meter longer blades. “The benefit of using longer blades, without changing the base or the tower of the wind turbine, is that it helps raise energy production by around 15 percent,” said Guillaume Clédat, Elium Product Manager.

Elium, for lightweighting in construction

In partnership with the IRT M2P Technological Research Institute in Metz, Arkema has developed optimized grades of Elium thermoplastic resin for the pultrusion converting process that helps produce glassfiber or carbon fiber reinforced profiles.

These new composite products open up promising prospects in construction, with two target applications in particular:

Concrete reinforcement: used instead of metal rods or thermoset composite rods

Window profiles: the new composites can replace aluminum or PVC or polyester profiles, with their mechanical and insulating properties and their smooth and glossy finish.

Elium, thermoplastic recyclability

In 2017, our R&D teams were heavily involved in developing the recycling process for composite parts made from the Elium resin via depolymerization: the parts are ground down coarsely; the Elium resin is then heat-depolymerized so that it can be recovered and purified into a resin with the same properties as the virgin resin. The remaining carbon or glass fibers can be reused.

Come and meet us on stand V39 to talk to our experts and find out about our extensive Composites offering!

A well-known major player in the composites market, Arkema today offers a comprehensive range of solutions for the manufacture of high quality composite parts.

A designer of materials and innovative solutions, Arkema shapes materials and creates new uses that accelerate customer performance. Our balanced business portfolio spans high-performance materials, industrial specialties and coating solutions. Our globally recognized brands are ranked among the leaders in the markets we serve. Reporting annual sales of €8.3 billion, we employ approximately 20,000 people worldwide and operate in close to 55 countries. We are committed to active engagement with all our stakeholders. Our research centers in North America, France and Asia concentrate on advances in bio-based products, new energies, water management, electronic solutions, lightweight materials and design, home efficiency and insulation.

Governor Cooper Announces 146 New Jobs in Western North Carolina at GE Aviation

RALEIGH, N.C. — March 1, 2018 — GE Aviation, a global manufacturer of aircraft engines and components, will create 146 full-time jobs over four years at its facilities in Asheville and West Jefferson Governor Roy Cooper announced today. The company will invest nearly $105 million to add production capacity supporting its revolutionary ceramic matrix composite (CMC) line of engine components.

“North Carolina welcomes innovators who drive our economy forward,” Governor Cooper said. “GE Aviation and their North Carolina employees have a long history of accomplishment in our state and this expansion will put even more people to work building the next generation of innovative products for the aerospace industry.”

GE Aviation’s Asheville and West Jefferson facilities are part of the company’s Aviation Supply Chain. The Asheville plant, opened in 2014, was the company’s first site to mass produce CMC components for jet engines. The ceramic components, which are lighter and stronger than conventional materials, enhance engine performance and offer lower fuel and maintenance costs.

GE Aviation currently employs more than 1,700 people in North Carolina. Of the 146 new positions, 15 will go to Ashe County and 131 to Buncombe County.

“We are very pleased to continue expanding our GE Aviation business in Asheville,” said Michael Meguiar, Asheville Plant Leader. “We continue to build on a great workforce, culture and community that supports advanced manufacturing jobs in Western North Carolina. This merging of technology and a strong, creative workforce is the foundation of our success. Our site continues to grow as we win components for our next generation of engines such as the GE9X and the CFM LEAP.  I’m very proud of the technology advances and the continued competitiveness that our teams have been able to demonstrate.”

“The companies that know North Carolina best are the ones already doing business in our state,” said North Carolina Commerce Secretary Anthony M. Copeland. “GE Aviation’s vote of confidence with this decision confirms once again that North Carolina offers innovative companies all the ingredients they need for success in today’s competitive marketplace.”

The North Carolina Department of Commerce and the Economic Development Partnership of N.C. (EDPNC) were instrumental in supporting the company’s expansion decision.

Salaries for the new jobs will vary by position but will average $48,214, well over the average wage of $39,192 in Buncombe County or the average wage of $31,705 in Ashe County.

A performance-based grant of $558,700 from the One North Carolina Fund will help facilitate GE Aviation’s expansion in North Carolina. The One N.C. Fund provides financial assistance to local governments to help attract economic investment and to create jobs. Companies receive no money upfront and must meet job creation and capital investment targets to qualify for payment. All One NC grants require a matching grant from local governments and any award is contingent upon that condition being met.

In addition to North Carolina Commerce and the Economic Partnership of North Carolina, other key partners in the project include the North Carolina General Assembly, the North Carolina Community College System, Buncombe County, Ashe County, the City of Asheville, Ashe County Economic Development, and the Economic Development Coalition of Ashville and Buncombe County.
