DuPont Industrial Biosciences, Archer Daniels Midland Co. Open Groundbreaking Biobased Pilot Facility In Illinois

DECATUR, Ill. — April 30, 2018 — DuPont Industrial Biosciences (DuPont) and Archer Daniels Midland Co. (ADM) announced the opening of the world’s first biobased furan dicarboxylic methyl ester (FDME) pilot production facility in Decatur, Ill. The plant is the centerpiece of a long-standing collaboration that will help bring a greater variety of sustainably sourced biomaterials into the lives of consumers.

Nearly one-tenth of the world’s oil is used to make the plastic products we use every day. From shampoo bottles to frozen food containers, fossil-fuel-based plastics are virtually impossible to avoid because of a lack of commercially available alternatives — a significant gap in the marketplace that DuPont and ADM’s new biobased FDME will help address.

FDME is a molecule derived from fructose that can be used to create a variety of biobased chemicals and materials, including plastics, that are ultimately more cost-effective, efficient and sustainable than their fossil fuel-based counterparts.

We’re confident FDME is both the more sustainable option and the better-for-business option,” said Dr. Michael Saltzberg, global business director for Biomaterials at DuPont Industrial Biosciences. “This molecule, and its numerous applications, will be high-performing, cost-effective and better for the environment. ADM’s expertise in agricultural value chains and the chemistry of carbohydrates makes them the best possible business partner on this initiative. Our goal is to bring this game-changing technology to commercial scale as quickly as possible.”

“Companies and consumers are of course concerned about their environmental footprint, but their bottom line will always be a key priority,” said ADM Chief Technology Officer Todd Werpy. “This new, innovative product will help customers replace plastics with materials that are more environmentally friendly, better performing and cost efficient. We’re pleased to work with DuPont, a leader in biomaterials, to bring this innovative new portfolio of solutions to customers around the globe, and we’re excited about the future of FDME.”

One of the first FDME-based polymers under development by DuPont is polytrimethylene furandicarboxyate (PTF), a novel polyester also made from DuPont’s proprietary Bio-PDO™ (1,3-propanediol). PTF is a 100 percent renewable polymer that, in bottling applications, can be used to create plastic bottles that are lighter-weight, more sustainable and better performing.

Research shows that PTF has up to 10-15 times the CO2 barrier performance of traditional PET plastic, which results in a longer shelf life. With that better barrier, companies will be able to design significantly lighter-weight packages, lowering the carbon emissions and significant costs related with shipping carbonated beverages.

U.S. Congressman Rodney Davis (R-Ill.), attended the ribbon-cutting in Decatur, delivering remarks and touring the facility.

“Illinois has always been a hub of agricultural innovation and scientific discovery, and both DuPont and ADM have been an important part of the fabric of our local farming communities,” said Congressman Davis. “This facility is a testament to the vitality and vibrancy of my district’s workforce and the critical importance of manufacturing in and revitalizing our rural communities. I thank these companies for their continued commitment to the people of Illinois.”

Equinox & Solstice Introduces The Northward Jacket — With Every Jacket Sold, One Is Gifted To A Local Kid In Need

LAWRENCE, Kan. — May 2, 2018 — Equinox & Solstice today announced the launch of the Northward Jacket, a responsibly sourced, windproof, water-resistant and breathable jacket that not only looks great, but helps local disadvantaged youth. With every Northward Jacket purchased, Equinox & Solstice will gift the same jacket to a local kid in need.  The Indiegogo campaign, which is being managed by the Launchpad Agency, has a funding goal of $30,000, and features limited Super Early Bird Specials of $119 as well as several other rewards for backers.

Featuring breathable stretch polyester blend fabric to ensure a cozy feel and proper fit, the Northward Jacket is also windproof and water resistant so the wearer can don it in various types of weather ranging in temperatures from 15-75 degrees Fahrenheit. Key features include an elastic draw cord hem and adjustable Velcro cuff with an attached hood with a sealed seam, peripheral cord adjustment, a rain visor, and convenient zippered pockets.  The Northward Jacket is lightweight (less than 2 lbs.), wrinkle resistant, can be folded up into a small space (9×9 inches), and features an Equinox & Solstice logo so that others can easily see that the jacket purchased helped a youth in the local community. Equinox & Solstice always offers free shipping, too!

With over 15 million youths living at or below the poverty line in the United States, most do not have adequate attire for changing seasons, let alone something that they can be proud of wearing. Once a jacket is purchased, Equinox & Solstice will work with a partnered local non-profit organization within 50 miles of the purchaser’s home to find a kid in need of a new jacket to ensure a local impact is made.

Once identified, the kid will get a gift card for a new jacket where they can order their size and color (Navy Blue or Brick Red) to ensure a jacket that perfectly fits them both functionally and fashionably. The jacket will be shipped directly to the kid at their preferred location, be it home, school or the non-profit organization to create a complete “shopping experience.” The jacket redeeming process was intentionally created to empower kids to make choices they can be proud of and to get a hand-up rather than a hand-out.

“Equinox & Solstice was born from first-hand experience with kids lacking the basic weather protection needed,” said Alex, founder of Equinox & Solstice. “It affects every aspect of their lives when they have to focus on staying dry and warm instead of things that can help them grow, like their studies. Our ‘Wear One, Share One’ program helps busy people make a positive impact in their local communities while getting a jacket, or a ‘superhero cape’ as I like to call it, that they can be proud of.”

Added Features And Digital Machine Documentation — An Upgrade For The KARL MAYER Webshop Spare Parts

OBERTSHAUSEN, Germany— May 2, 2018 — Warp knitting companies are increasingly using the KARL MAYER WEBSHOP SPARE PARTS. The number of users is growing all the time, and online procurement is gaining momentum globally. The scope of this order platform is being extended by continuous innovation.

The most recent changes have been made under the slogan of “Expansion”, and relate to expanding the performance as well as the regional coverage of this facility.

A new feature is that the machine documentation is made available digitally in the Karl Mayer Webshop Spare Parts when a new machine is bought.

More specifically, spares catalogues, electrical circuit diagrams and detailed operating and KAMCOS® control instructions are made available. Previously, these printed documents were included in the machine delivery specifications. Less paper now means greater transparency and lower administration costs for customers. The documents can be viewed or the instructions can be downloaded in the webshop quickly and easily by selecting “My machines”. The customer’s machines are displayed and the documents can be called up for the required warp knitting machine built from 2006 onwards. The spare parts catalogues on file are also used as the basis for the ordering process. They replace the old PDF lists and permit interactive selection. The amount of information relating to the spare parts available in the webshop has also been increased. This latest upgrade displays the net weight of the items in the shopping cart. If this is already full, the total weight of the order can be calculated to improve transportation planning. The actual delivery time is also displayed in the cart after the availability has been checked automatically. This guarantees instant ordering. Further upgrades, such as displaying the customs tariff numbers for the spare parts, will gradually be incorporated as well.

International rollout

Customers in the USA and Canada will soon be able to use the Karl Mayer Webshop Spare Parts routinely. A national platform for the virtual purchase of spare parts is being installed at Karl Mayer North America. Employees of Karl Mayer in Greensboro will take over the administration of the webshop and handling of the spare parts business generated by the webshop. All the current spare parts for warp knitting and technical textiles machines will be available.

Karl Mayer (CHINA) already has its own ordering platform and NIPPON MAYER should get a version for the Japanese market within the next few months. The language options of the Karl Mayer Webshop Spare Parts on the parent company’s website are also being extended, and Turkish and Italian translations are currently being prepared. The next stage is to further expand the number of spare parts listed.

Demand For European Technical Textiles Attracts Leading Companies To Cinte Techtextil China

HONG KONG — May 2, 2018 — Exhibitors from eight countries have already confirmed to participate in the fair’s European Zone. They join an expected 500-plus total exhibitors from around the world. The 2018 edition of this biennial fair takes place from September 4-6 in halls N1 – N3 of the Shanghai New International Expo Centre.

While China retains its edge in terms of technical textiles and nonwovens production capabilities, in the eyes of Chinese buyers, European suppliers are still the leaders when it comes to technology and innovation. This was widely reported by European exhibitors at the previous edition in 2016 of Asia’s leading biennial trade event for the industry: Cinte Techtextil China.

“In the Chinese market, buyers want good quality products, so overseas companies, and products with recognised quality certifications, have a lot of potential,” commented Ping Chen, General Manager of IBENA Shanghai Technical Textiles. “As a leading German company in the industry, our products are welcomed by many buyers at this fair. It is also important to be in the German Pavilion as this signals to buyers that we have quality products, and it attracts more attention.” Switzerland-based firm Sanitized AG had the same experience. “As a Swiss company in the European Zone I believe it’s an advantage, as some local buyers have more confidence towards imported products,” said Steven Liu, sales manager.

Other exhibitors commented on the long-term trends in the Chinese market. “There’s a definite shift to more high-quality machinery in China that isn’t affected by what’s happening in the overall economy. Moreover, there are opportunities for overseas suppliers as there is still a gap between us and what Chinese companies produce,” explained Dr. Joachim Binnig, vice president, Head of Development & Technology, Autefa Solutions Germany GmbH.

Roger Zhang, sales manager for German firm J.H. Ziegler Nonwovens and New Materials commented: “Our products are mainly for high-end Chinese customers, such as BMW and Audi. The Chinese market has gradually matured, but the production capability for high-performance products which are energy efficient and eco-friendly is still developing, so there is a lot of space for overseas brands to develop here.”

European Zone highlights

This year’s European Zone will feature around 30 exhibitors from eight countries, including Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK, while further exhibitors can be found in national pavilions from Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany and Italy. Some of the exhibitor highlights in the European Zone include:

  • Arkema (France): with brands including PMMA Altuglas, Rilsan, Pebax, Kynar PVDF and Bostik, it will present polymer resin for fibers and yarns that apply to a wide range of applications, at the fair.
  • Dakota Coating (Belgium): specialists in thermoplastic and thermosetting adhesives, its polymer products, based on polyethylene, polyolefin or mixtures, ethylene vinyl acetates, co-polyamides, polyurethanes and co-polyesters, are suitable for automotive, building, heat transfer and sound insulation uses.
  • Lenzing Plastics (Austria): a new exhibitor at the fair, it is a leading manufacturer of polyolefin and fluoropolymer products, such as Thermoplast and PTFE products. One of their core competencies lies in the monoaxial stretching of films and filaments, and they offer special solutions in the fields of construction & insulation, It will highlight its PROFILEN® PTFE product at the fair, and with its extreme durability and very smooth surface, it is highly valued in many niche applications in the technical and medical sectors.
  • Protechnic (France): manufacturer of hot-melt adhesives and plastic printed films, it will showcase hot melt thermoadhesive nets, webs and films at the fair.
  • Trelleborg Coated Systems (Italy): another new exhibitor this edition, it produces high-performance, engineered coated fabrics. They offer a wide variety of substrates — from Kevlar® to silk – with a choice of weaving methods.
