Schoeller Celebrates 150 Years Of Performance Textile History

SEVELEN, Switzerland/NEWBURYPORT, Mass. — September 26, 2018 — Schoeller Textil AG, the global textile solutions brand specializing in the development and production of innovative technical fabrics and smart textile finishing technologies, is celebrating 150 years of tradition and future opportunities. What began as Switzerland’s first worsted yarn spinning mill in 1868 has achieved worldwide recognition for its highly-technical textiles and its dedication to sustainability. For its more than 500 brand partners in 50 countries, Schoeller produces an average of over six million meters of performance textiles per year in its mills in Sevelen, Switzerland and Balingen, Germany.

When Rudolph Schoeller established what would be called “Schoeller & Sohne” in Zurich in 1868, it was within an age of ground-breaking achievement and progress inspired by the beginnings of the Swiss Red Cross and the completion of the Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland. Schoeller quickly expanded its business and in 1954 went on to purchase a textile mill in Sevelen, located in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley, which currently serves as the company’s headquarters. That mill would soon launch the very first elastic fabric for the ski industry — or the world’s very first soft shell fabric — under the name “skifans.”

Forerunner in sustainability

Sustainability has always been of great importance at Schoeller. In 1994, it was the first activewear and leisurewear manufacturer to receive Oko-Tex Standard 100 certification. Schoeller also served as one of the founding developers of the bluesign® system, which has since become established worldwide. Schoeller then became the very first company to receive the bluesign® award in 2008.

“Being able to reflect upon 150 years of textile experience, customer relationships and progress is an incredibly proud moment for our entire Schoeller family. This milestone is one for which we would like to thank our consumers, customers and partners who have continually supported and inspired our advancements,” said Schoeller CEO Siegfried Winkelbeiner. “Protecting and supporting millions of consumers in doing what they love most, and keeping a close eye on the next level of innovation every day, drives us on and gives us tremendous fulfillment — just as I am sure it did for Rudolph Schoeller so many years ago.”

Bio-technologies and electronics in textiles

Schoeller’s innovations include its c_change membrane technology, the world’s first intelligent membrane, as well as the well-known NanoSphere®, coldblack® and corkshell® technologies. 3XDRY® Bio and ecorepel® Bio, the new PFC-free technologies based on renewable raw materials, were first introduced to customers in 2016. Most recently, Schoeller announced the availability of its heatable E-soft-shell, which won the DesignPrize Switzerland 2017/2018 for the textile category.

In 2012, Schoeller joined forces with the Eschler Group, experts in tailored, knitted fabric solutions, to offer an extensive range of complementary textile options to its joint brand partners. “Today, as ever, Schoeller strives to deliver what our brand partners’ end users need to differentiate themselves,” continued Winkelbeiner. “We work to stay ahead of the curve on all fronts – providing our customers with what they need, sometimes even before they know they need it.”

Fully-integrated production sites

Schoeller’s Sevelen headquarters include its production facilities that house weaving, dyeing, lamination and coating departments, as well as the state-of-the-art research, development and testing laboratory. It’s on-site administrative building is home to the design and sales, IT, marketing and accounting teams.

ITMA Asia + CITME 2018 Exhibitor Preview: Lindauer Dornier

LINDAU, Germany — September 26, 2018 — High-tech boom in China: More and more Chinese textile companies are choosing weaving machines from DORNIER in order to meet the growing demand for high quality technical fabrics for aircraft parts, filters, automotive and safety textiles. At the ITMA Asia International Textile Machinery trade fair in Shanghai (15-19 October), the German technology leader will exhibit the world‘s most advanced weaving technology for producing high performance fabrics.

Audacious investment objectives, rising wages, enormous funds for research and development (equivalent to about 226 billion euro in 2017 alone) and emerging aspiration towards quality: China‘s evolution from the overflow production facility for the West into a high-tech industrial powerhouse in its own right shows no signs of flagging. This trend is also reflected strongly in the Chinese textile industry, and is being monitored attentively at the Lindauer Dornier GmbH (LiDO): „China has always been an important market for us, but since the demand for higher quality textiles has also begun to grow, it has become our biggest market“, says Wolfgang Schöffl, Head of Business Unit Weaving Machines at Dornier.

In China, LiDO weaving machines are used to create fine scarves and elegant women‘s apparel from cashmere wool and silk as well as intricate airplane parts from carbon fibers. This last category is part of the growing global market for technical textiles, which is supplied with special coatings, airbags, tirecord and filters as well as much else which is manufactured in the Middle Kingdom on weaving machines from Dornier. And the volume of these high-performance fabrics required just to satisfy China‘s domestic demand is enormous.

Flawless processing of high-performance fibers

Let us consider filtration, for example: The fact that the Chinese city of Xi‘an cleans its air with the tallest anti-smog tower in the world (100 m) is convincing testament: cleaning air and water is a major concern in China. And this is one reason why Dornier in Shanghai – for the first time ever in Asia – will exhibit its new P2 rapier weaving machine in its most powerful configuration (Type: TGP). This machine is able to bring a reed beat-up force of up to five tons for producing wide, seamless fabrics for high density air and water filters. „The textile is exposed to exceptionally high forces specifically for wet filtration; seams are weak spots, which should be avoided if possible“, explains Schöffl.

It is no coincidence that the rising sales of weaving machines from the shores of Lake Constance are closely linked to Chinese demand for high-performance fabrics both domestically and for export: The weaving machines from Dornier have represented the gold standard for flawless processing of high-performance fibers such as carbon, glass fiber and aramid for over 60 years. „The greater the volume of high-quality fabrics China manufactures, the more weaving machines we can send them“, says Schöffl. At the same time, the division head continues, besides the technical quality the company‘s Chinese customers also value LiDO‘s aftersales and training services, ease of contact and fast response times.

“Made in Germany“ weaving machine showroom

Besides the P2 TGP rapier weaving machine, Dornier is also going to exhibit other machines at the trade fair: an air-jet weaving machine for manufacturing car upholstery and an airbag weaving machine (at the stand of the Belgian machine building company Van de Wiele) will also be on display. The “Made in Germany“ label is highly regarded as a hallmark of quality in China, as is borne out by an ongoing project in the town of Ürümqi. An entrepreneur has established a showroom there with a dozen or more weaving machines to show how raw textile materials are turned into fabrics for an enormous variety of applications. Naturally, in such a setting the quality of the wovens cannot be left to chance: Every one of the weaving machines in the showroom was built by Dornier in Lindau.

Cole Haan Introduces ZERØGRAND With Stitchlite™ Wool And Partners With Housespecial To Bring The Idea To Life

NEW YORK CITY — September 25, 2018 — Cole Haan has released ZERØGRAND with Stitchlite™ Wool, the newest style transforming the familiar to extraordinary this Fall.

Cole Haan continues to push boundaries with ZERØGRAND with Stitchlite Wool, the next iteration of ZERØGRAND footwear for men and women. Like a sweater for your feet, the ZERØGRAND with Stitchlite Wool was designed to keep feet dry and warm throughout the colder months, making it the ultimate thermal, breathable and flexible shoe that will last all season long.

“We are absolutely thrilled to introduce the ZERØGRAND with Stitchlite Wool,” said David Maddocks, chief marketing officer & general manager of Business Development at Cole Haan. “To make an even bigger splash, we have chosen to collaborate on an animated video to bring the idea to life in a way that showcases our personality and sense of humor. This is one of those projects that makes you enjoy the work you do and the people with whom you work.”

To add to the excitement surrounding the launch of ZERØGRAND with Stitchlite Wool, Cole Haan teamed up with animation company HouseSpecial to collaborate on an extraordinary video that brings Stitchlite Wool to life. Well-known for creating some of the most-recognized animated content in the world, HouseSpecial’s ability to design for motion and to develop iconic characters has attracted clients like Sony, Target, Apple, Honda and now Cole Haan.

“These are the types of collaborations we revel in — a creative, forward-thinking client with a sense of humor, a firm grasp on who they are and aren’t afraid to have fun with their brand as they engage fans with the unexpected,” said Lourri Hammack, founding partner and EP at HouseSpecial.

Co-directed by Kirk Kelley and Mark Gustafson, the directing duo collaborated closely with Cole Haan on the light-hearted, playful video that brings the ZERØGRAND with Stitchlite™ Wool collection to life with an entertaining performance put on by sheep and alpacas in a pasture jamming out to Domingo “Sam The Sham” Samudio’s 1965 hit “Wooly Bully.” Cole Haan licensed the original recording for the video.

Kelley, HouseSpecial founding partner and ECD whose animation direction skills shine in M&M’s 2018 Super Bowl spot with Danny DeVito explains, “The best part of the process is visualizing how the whole thing might work. Taking interesting bits and pieces … whether trees or rocks on a hillside or the way a sheep chews … and then digitally synthesizing the hundreds of elements into a beautiful visual story. Of course it doesn’t hurt that the whole idea of sheep wearing shoes and forming a band is a bit absurd.”

Gustafson, who was Animation Director on Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox, had this to say about the collaboration, “A large part of the joy of making this film was collaborating with the folks at Cole Haan who trusted us and the story enough to let it sing for itself. My only regret is that I exhausted all my sheep puns in the first week of production. Baaaad news.”

Featuring innovative fabrication, the ZERØGRAND with Stitchlite Wool offers functional, thermal properties that provide natural insulation when the temperatures begin to drop. The dual-gender Oxford (and Chukka for men) integrates a premium wool blend that provides a combination of moisture wicking, odor control, breathability, and dynamic fit. These upgraded and innovative properties provide ongoing comfort for anyone who is working, moving, or exploring, and for everywhere in between.

The style’s zonally-engineered upper moves with the natural motion of the foot, providing flexibility and fit. The one-piece knitted upper wicks away moisture while simultaneously allowing air in for all-day breathability and comfort.

All styles in the collection are equipped with Cole Haan’s GRAND.ØS technology, which is crafted specifically for an on-the-go lifestyle, with emphasis on flexibility, cushioning, and anatomical fit.

IFAI Exhibitor Preview: Groz-Beckert

ALBSTADT, Germany/DALLAS — September 24, 2018 — IFAI Expo is one of the most important regional trade fairs in Texas, USA, for manufacture of clothing and technical textiles. In 2018, it will take place from October 15-18 in the “Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center” in Dallas. Groz-Beckert will be taking part with the Sewing product area at booth #2016.

Increasing demands on productivity and ever more complex applications, combined with the growing variety of materials, are key challenges faced by the sewing industry. In response to these challenges, Groz-Beckert has a variety of special application needles (SAN®) — offering the perfect needle for every situation, tailored to the relevant application.

For sewing technical textiles, for example, the special application needle SAN 5.2 delivers the best results due to its properties. The special shaft reinforcement increases the needle stability, for example, and the double coding in the point area improves the thread guidance in both linear and multi-directional sewing processes. For extremely fine loop and weave materials, on the other hand, special applications needles SAN 10 and SAN 10 XS are used. The shaft geometry of both needles is gentle on the material and guarantees fault-free processing. The special shape of the needle eye also helps to reduce the number of skipped stitches and needle and thread breakages. Equipped with a titanium nitride coating (GEBEDUR®), both needles also offer improved wear protection and a longer lifetime. This leads to a significant improvement in efficiency in the sewing operation.

In addition to the high demands placed on the sewing operation itself, topics such as occupational health and safety and environmental protection are also becoming ever more important in today’s market. The regulations often go beyond the legal requirements, as brand owners and stores apply their own codes of conduct and monitor compliance closely.

The Quality Management INH (Ideal Needle Handling) developed by Groz-Beckert offers support here. It is tailored perfectly to the processes in sewing operations and facilitates problem-free and time-saving handling and documentation of broken and damaged sewing machine needles. The process thus has a direct positive impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and the environment.

With the Online Customer Portal Sewing, Groz-Beckert also supports its customers online in all aspects of the production process. The ever-expanding knowledge database provides customers with a wealth of information on sewing technology as well as many details about Groz-Beckert products and services – around the clock, anywhere in the world. In addition to videos on different types of stitch formation, a product catalog is also available in the portal, with a quick and reliable product search function. These products can then be ordered quickly and easily in the linked Online Shop.
