Canada’s Leading Manufacturer Of Tactical And Sports Gear Announces Expansion To The United States

TORONTO — October 8, 2018 — Only three months after announcing its expansion to the European market with successful results, Canada’s leading manufacturer of tactical and sports products The Requirements Group (TRG) is starting its operations in the United States of America effective immediately.

With its two flagship brands Shadow Elite and Shadow Strategic, TRG will be able to serve both the agency and civilian markets. Having its own factory allows TRG to source and manufacture products the way they are meant to be. Having the ability to regulate strict quality control is what the company prides itself on. Reducing production costs by not outsourcing to third-party factories passes on the savings of premium products to the clients, as well as allowing the company to handle large-scale agency and government contracts.

“The main reason why our brands are so popular with both the professional and consumer end users is because every piece is engineered and tested by veteran and active tactical police and military operators,” says Glen Turpin, retired police officer, tactical expert and co-founder of The Requirements Group (TRG). “Above all, since we are a law enforcement and military veteran owned and operated company, we give a lot back to other veterans.”

Recently, TRG designed a specific style of pants for amputees. TRG has been working with veteran support groups to provide these products to those that can benefit from them. Also, the company is in works of developing an entire philanthropy division to support more injured veterans and active teams in the field.

“The TRG guys have stood on the front lines for years, fighting for our freedom and liberty, protecting our communities the same way those using our products today are. We know the requirements and rigorous demands our men and women in uniform face, so we want to make sure that the last thing they have to worry about is the quality, comfort and safety of the operational gear they are wearing,” says Jake Myers, veteran U.S. Army Combat Veteran and operations manager of TRG in the United States. “We don’t tell them what they should wear; we listen to them and design the gear to meet their requirements. We are one of them. We don’t operate the way other corporations do. Our approach is to treat our customers the way we wanted to be treated while we were active. We are here to provide solutions for them, not just get the sale. When they call our office, they know they will be speaking with one of us. That is the most essential way to get to know your clients and build a relationship with them. Whether our end user is a soldier, a cop, an outdoor enthusiast, active in airsoft community or an athlete, they are an individual and our job is to listen to them, not treat them like a number. They wear our gear, they are part of our family.”

Recently the tactical and sports apparel market has been flooded with low-grade, unreliable products as a result of many manufacturers turning to factories with no experience in tactical products. This move has neglected the end user’s comfort and safety. The Requirements Group (TRG) has been a company trying to turn around the market and deliver to the tactical professionals and outdoors consumers premium products which have been designed and tested by active and veteran tactical police, military and SAR (search & rescue) operators. All the requirements of the products are based on real-life experience of tactical and special forces operators.

ITMA Asia + CITME 2018 Exhibitor Preview: Mahlo

SAAL/DONAU,
Germany — October 8, 2018 — When Asia’s most important textile machinery trade fair opens its doors October 15, Mahlo GmbH + Co. KG, will of course be there. This is why the German machine manufacturer will be presenting its latest developments in the field of straightening and controlling with the product web running at booth H6 D13. The focus will always be on the current, predominant topics in the industry: Networking and sustainability.

The automatic straightening technology is Mahlo’s flagship in the textile sector; the principle of detecting and automatically correcting distortions in the fabric by means of scanning originates from the German think tank and it is still the basis of all modern automatic straightening systems today. “With our Generation 15 machines, we have paired over 70 years of experience with state-of-the-art technology and again set standards in textile production and finishing,” said Sales Manager Thomas Höpfl. Together with the Mahlo sales team and the experienced sales representative Shanghai Kuantex, he will be presenting a continuous transport model with an ORTHOPAC RVMC-15 combination straightener at the ITMA Asia.

Optoelectronic scanning for distortion detection using an oscillating lens and DSP (digital signal processor) is probably the most sensitive and versatile system on the market. Arranged on a carrier bridge, several of these sensors – evenly distributed across the width – simultaneously detect the position of the weft thread at different points. The scanning system detects and analyses the angle position of the weft threads, courses or rows of tufting. An intelligent control algorithm with a self-optimisation function, together with the hydraulic or electric roller positioning adapted to it, ensures that all web distortions are reliably removed. Even the most complicated product structures pose no problem. Scanning systems for special product structures are available as an alternative to standard scanning. Scanning and distortion correction of patterned products (lace, jacquard, print, terry cloth) is easily possible as well.

The expert audience at ITMA Asia will also be able to learn about a new method for the online control of the number of weft threads/course count, which can also be used to determine and even out the basis weight. The FAMACONT PMC-15 measures the thread or knit density by means of a sensor and compares it with the nominal value stored in the recipe data management. The detected deviation of the thread density from the nominal value is used to fully automatically regulate the over-feed during the pinning process on the tenter. The so-called feed-forward control ensures a constant thread/course density and a uniform basis weight. This factor is particularly important for knitwear manufacturers since their product is sold by weight and must meet customer specifications exactly.

Networking and sustainability are more in demand than ever before

With its new Generation 15 machines, Mahlo is also responding to customers’ demand for increased connectivity in their machines. Mahlo straighteners, sensors and control loops are just a mouse click away from the individual data of existing machines. “If customers use suitable sensor technology and the appropriate networking, they can access the machine from anywhere, provided that an Internet connection is available. Customers also have the option of connecting any machine to the network via an OPC UA server with suitable connectivity,” explains Höpfl.

The Generation 15 machine features cross-platform visualisation. The user interface can be adapted to the individual requirements of the operating personnel with just a few clicks. A large number of operating pages can be individually defined and provide the operating personnel with a complete overview of all the process parameters without having to constantly scroll through the menus. Visualization can also be used as an information centre to visualise and monitor several Mahlo devices. The data generated is stored in databases and can be summarised in adapted protocols and output via suitable interfaces.

Another item that is becoming more and more important for textile manufacturers is sustainability in production. By using process control systems like those offered by Mahlo, critical parameters, such as weight, residual moisture, dwell time or humidity, can be measured and controlled. This means that the product meets the requirements right from the start and the manufacturer wastes neither raw materials nor energy. At booth H6 D13, the Mahlo team will be happy to explain exactly which systems fit which customer requirements.

Schoeller Textil Has Taken The Finishing Of Two-Layer Laminates For Protective Clothing And Outdoor And Active Sportswear To A New Level With Monforts

MÖNCHENGLADBACH, Germany — October 8, 2018 — Swiss fabric innovator Schoeller Textil has taken the finishing of two-layer laminates for protective clothing and outdoor and active sportswear to a new level of production efficiency with the installation of a Monforts Eco Applicator unit.

The innovations over the decades from this company, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, are too numerous to mention.

They include the introduction of the first elastic ski apparel at the start of the 1960s, the integration of Kevlar into motorcycle jackets in the early 1980s and the first temperature regulating fabrics over twenty years ago.

From its base in the beautiful village of Sevelen, at the foot of a scenic stretch of the Swiss Alps close to the border with Austria, Schoeller has been responsible for a succession of award-winning and exclusive new fabric finishes, many of which are now licensed to third party mills.

These include coldblack® for UV protection, energear™, which exploits the beneficial properties of far infrared from the body, NanoSphere®, for water, oil and dirt repellency, along with highly wash and abrasion resistance, 3XDRY®, for moisture management, and the latest environmentally-sensitive Schoeller treatments, ecorepel® and ecodry.

Having led the field in stretch woven fabrics for many years, Schoeller considerably expanded its range of knitted fabrics through the acquisition of fellow Swiss manufacturer Eschler Group in 2012.

Standards

Manufacturing in Switzerland, of course, comes with environmental responsibility — the country has consistently ranked Number One worldwide in the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) and as a consequence, Schoeller has had to meet standards even higher than in surrounding European companies.

Everything a manufacturing plant does is strictly regulated, including the land, water and air that is used, but Schoeller was an early responder in this respect, having become the first textile company in the world to receive bluesign® certification back in 2001 – indeed, the company was instrumental in establishing this highly-successful system.

It excludes all environmentally harmful substances from the manufacturing process, sets guidelines and monitors their observance for environmentally friendly and reliable production.

Further, the company has a close cooperation with the environmental authorities in Switzerland and has also gone to great lengths to ensure no emissions or noise come from the Sevelen plant — which is in both a rural and residential area — and that it blends naturally into its immediate environment.

Natural fit

The advantages that can be provided by the Monforts Eco Applicator for water, energy and raw material savings were a natural fit for the company’s plant.

It has been designed to provide significant energy savings with reduced liquor application, eliminating the need for a conventional wet-on-wet padder and employing trough and roller techniques to apply just the required amount of liquid/coating to fabrics via contact with the roller.

As a long-standing Monforts customer, Schoeller already operates two 2.4-metre-wide Montex stenters, the most recent being a 60-metre long, ten-chamber unit.

This has a very long feed-in area, since for some laminated materials it is necessary to use two A frames for feeding in the different materials, as well as accommodating padding and laminating/coating and bonding machines.

Both stenters are connected to a heat exchange system. On the latest stenter, the waste air also goes through the heat exchanger to heat up the fresh air, providing two sources of recycled energy — both air and water. Half of the energy used for warm water at the plant is gained through heat recovery. The energy is harvested from the waste air of the steam boilers as well as the stenters, and the residual heat of the recovered steam condensation.

The Eco Applicator has been integrated at the start of the second Montex line at the Sevelen plant and its prime function is to make substrates for Schoeller’s membranes hydrophilic on their inner side and hydrophobic on the outer side in a single pass — although a further 20-25 different finishing treatments are also carried out on the line.

Minimal application

“It’s not possible to finish the layers individually, prior to hot melt laminating so the fabrics and membrane films are dyed separately prior to being laminated, and then finished together by the Eco Applicator before going to the stenter,” explains Michael Killisperger, manager of Schoeller’s finishing and coating department. “The Eco Applicator is designed for minimal application, and we can measure the moisture humidity at the entrance of the unit and then after both the first and second passes through it.

“Ideally we’re looking for 20% residual content — 10% on each side. Most of these membranes are highly elastic so high control of the fabric tension is also required to prevent the creation of stripes. This can also be controlled at various points within the unit.”

The installation is part of an on-going programme that has seen over 25 million Swiss francs invested in new technology at the Schoeller plant over the past decade and has led to further new product developments such as the introduction of upcycled Econyl® yarns (by Aquafil SpA) and the PFC-free ecorepel® Bio technology, based on renewable raw materials, as new components for the company’s industry-leading membranes.

TRSA Succeeds At Reforming California Title 22

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — October 5, 2018 — TRSA’s efforts to reform California’s Title 22 code, which regulates the laundering of healthcare linen, took the final step to passage when California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed the legislation into law. Gov. Brown signed the bill on Sept. 20.

The legislation, AB 2679, sponsored by Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell (D-Long Beach), will give TRSA operators flexibility in processing healthcare linens to use lower wash temperatures and shorten the wash time.

“This bill is a great opportunity for the healthcare sector of the linen, uniform and facility services industry,” said Kevin Schwalb, TRSA’s vice president of government relations. “Operators will soon have flexibility in laundering healthcare linens. The final version allows for much quicker implementation of the flexibility than the original language.”

More specifically, the new law would, on or before Jan. 1, 2020, require each general acute care hospital and acute psychiatric hospital, including those facilities that use a medical laundry service provider, to adopt and implement a linen laundry processing policy that is consistent and in accordance with the most recent infection control guidelines and standards developed by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

“Jan. 1, 2020, is the deadline for developing new laundering policies,” Schwalb said. “The sooner facilities can adopt new policies, the sooner operators will have flexibility in processing linens. This would not have occurred if it was not for those individuals that took time out of their schedules to attend the California Legislative Conference to tell the industry’s story.”
