American Silk Mills Unveils Updates To Iconic Brussels® Velvet

HIGH POINT, N.C. — May 31, 2019 — American Silk Mills is introducing Brussels® Stria at Showtime Market in High Point, N.C., which takes place June 2-5. Combining a textured and nuanced look with the rich, luxurious hand and soft shimmer of its iconic velvet, Brussels Stria adds a modern feel to any room.  Brussels® Stria will be available in ten stock colors, and cut orders will be fulfilled within 48 hours.

Brussels, American Silk Mills’ iconic and trademarked luxury velvet, has defined the industry’s standard for high-end luxury velvet since its introduction in 1994.  Over the years, American Silk Mills has sold more than 2.4 million yards of Brussels velvet to more than 1,100 different customers. Starting this year, American Silk Mills is partnering with a state-of-the-art mill in India for the exclusive development and production of Brussels velvet.

“As a result of the collaborative efforts of American Silk Mills and our new mill partner, Brussels velvet is now better than ever,” said David Corbin, CEO of American Silk Mills.  “We’ve taken the quality, safety and durability of Brussels to the next level, and have raised the bar for high-end luxury velvet.  The improvements we’ve made demonstrate our commitment to developing textiles that look beautiful and exceed our customers’ expectations for quality and performance.”

Improvements to Brussels include the following:

  • Increased the weight per square yard by more than 50 percent compared to previous Brussels, resulting in an even more luxurious hand.
  • With more than twice as many double rubs compared to previous Brussels, the fabric can be specified for any end use, including high-durability end uses such as residential, hospitality and contract.
  • With 100-percent vertical manufacturing and increased production capacities, lead times are significantly improved for full-piece Brussels orders.

All Brussels fabrics exceed the requirements for the most critical flammability tests (CAL Technical Bulletin 117-2013; NPFA 260; UFAC), eliminating any safety concerns that prohibit sales into any U.S. state.

American Silk Mills will also announce a substantial price reduction on Brussels, to be effective June 2, 2019.

“The new pricing will reflect the greater efficiencies and quality delivered by our exclusive mill partner, and we’re excited to offer our customers better quality luxury velvet at better prices,” added Corbin.

Retailers Warn Of Growing Tariff Bill For American Businesses And Consumers

WASHINGTON — May 31, 2019 — The National Retail Federation issued the following statement from Senior Vice President for Government Relations David French in response to the Trump administration’s plans to impose a 5 percent tariff on all Mexican imports starting June 10.

“The growing tariff bill paid by U.S. businesses and consumers is adding up and will raise the cost of living for American families. Forcing Americans to pay more for produce, electronics, auto parts and clothes isn’t the answer to the nation’s immigration challenges, and this certainly won’t help move USMCA forward.”

In 2017, U.S. retailers imported $128 billion in goods from Mexico.

ITMA 2019 Exhibitor Preview: DORNIER

LINDAU, Germany — May 31, 2019 — The modern weaver faces many challenges: Digitalization is advancing deeper and deeper into the fabric of the production chain, sustainability requirements are growing more demanding, new employees and experienced technicians are thin on the ground. Flexibility in manufacturing is turning into an existential question. At the upcoming ITMA, DORNIER will present answers to these trends — in the form of the latest weaving machines and weaving solutions.

When the subject of sustainability is raised, businesses are often called upon to take the lead. Lindauer DORNIER is doing precisely that, as enshrined in one of our seven guiding principles: “We strive to design and manufacture our products so that they are as safe and environmentally compatible as possible.” This commitment was formulated by the company founder, Peter Dornier over three decades ago.

Our presence at the upcoming ITMA exhibition – the International Textile Machinery Exhibition – is further proof that sustainability is not just a passing fashion at DORNIER, but rather the foundation and result of a long-term corporate strategy. At this event, under the banner theme of “The Green Machine” we will present the latest machines and lines, “Made in Germany” for the sustainable, efficient manufacture of clothing, home textiles and technical fabrics and flexible, economical production of high-quality composite semi-finished materials.

World premiere of the new rapier weaving machine P2

Highlights include the new rapier weaving machine P2, which will be presented in its standard configuration for the first time in Barcelona. It combines the strengths of the P1 All-rounder with many innovations to equip the weaver optimally for the future. “We didn’t reinvent rapier weaving, but we improved every major aspect of the process,” said Thomas Laukamp, DORNIER’s Head of Advanced Technology Development Weaving Machines. Accordingly, with improved shed geometry and a more rigid frame, greater productivity, maintenance-free operation and optimized positive center transfer movement, the P2 rapier weaving machine offers the highest flexibility and process reliability available on the world market.

The new machine structure with clearly defined primary and auxiliary modules represents a further advance. “The modular design and clear interfaces between the machine modules make conversion and expansion work simpler,” explained Laukamp. He adds that this translates to greater investment security for the weaver, because the P2 can easily be adapted for processing different yarns for clothing, domestic and technical textiles as well as high-quality composite semi-finished materials. So the weaver can respond faster to unpredictable market developments. “Who knows what orders weavers will have to deal with in five years,” said Laukamp, who sees DORNIER as a solution provider.

Besides, the P2 was the perfect example of a technology approach conceived for total sustainability: Not only did the ultrafine precision fabrics it produced keep air and water clean or filter exhaust gases, the machine itself was designed for sustainability: “The resource-saving operating principle and long service life of the P2 make it a truly ‘Green Machine,” said Head of Advanced Technology Development Laukamp.

Future-oriented: The encapsulated air-jet weaving machine

On the subject of air-jet weaving, DORNIER will exhibit an encapsulated air-jet weaving machine. This solution is designed to bring different, individually controllable climate zones into the production workshop for the first time: This means that each weaving machine can be run in its own climate, adjusted to create the ideal conditions for the respective manufacturing process, regardless of the heat and humidity in the rest of the production workshop.

This approach too makes for the greatest possible flexibility in accepting and completing orders, since it is then possible to process different fibers ranging from wool to glass simultaneously in the same workshop. The lower levels of noise, dirt and mechanical vibration that prevail as a result of the encapsulation also make the fabric manufacturing workstations safer and more comfortable — a convincing argument for recruiting young employees and experienced technicians.

24/7 online shop for original parts: The new myDoX® customer portal

The new myDoX® customer portal will also be presented at the ITMA. Based on the latest database technology, the portal adds digital order management to the personalized technical, installation and maintenance service for which DORNIER is known. It will provide an online shop with permanent availability for original parts (DoXPOS – Parts Order System) for all product lines. Remote maintenance and networking of weaving machines — to improve run characteristics, for example — will also be possible in future via myDoX®.

More ITMA highlights from DORNIER: The new color selector and feed system DORNIER DisCoS (DCS) for rapier weaving machines, enabling more efficient processing of up to eight colors; the DORNIER Weft Saver (DWS) weft saving device which enables weaving without a left catch selvedge, reducing weft; the double weft rapier heads DORNIER DoPPIO with free color transfer and parallel weft insertion.

NCTO Raises Serious Concerns Over The Administration’s Plan To Impose Tariffs On Mexico

WASHINGTON — May 31, 2019 — Kim Glas, president & CEO of the National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO), issued the following statement today in response to the administration’s decision under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to assess penalty duties on Mexico as an attempt to address the growing immigration dispute on the U.S. southern border. The proposed 5-percent increase would begin on June 10 and incrementally increase to 25 percent, if the dispute is not resolved.

The magnitude of the trading relationship with Mexico is significant for the U.S. textile industry, representing $12.2 billion in two-way textile and apparel trade in 2018. The U.S. textile industry alone exported $4.7 billion in yarn and fabrics to Mexico last year and had a net export surplus of $3.8 billion.

As a result, Mexico is the single largest market for U.S.-made textile exports.

“We are very concerned about the impact these proposed tariffs would have on a critical and integrated supply chain for the U.S. and Mexico textile and apparel industries. Under the NAFTA agreement, the U.S. has benefited as a result of strong rules of origin that require the use of regional yarns and fabrics. As a result, the U.S. industry has made significant investment — $22.8 billion from 2006 to 2017 — to help grow the manufacturing of fiber, yarns, and fabrics in the United States. NCTO supports the passage of the pending U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) because it is a critical trade agreement that will strengthen the industry’s supply chain representing approximately $20 billion in three-way trade,” Glas said.

“Adding tariffs to Mexican apparel imports, which largely contain U.S. textile inputs, would significantly disrupt this industry and jeopardize jobs on both sides of the border,” Glas said. “And as a result, it will accelerate substantially the immigration issues the administration’s is seeking to address.”

“In addition, this tariff increase would give a significant competitive advantage to China, which already accounts for about 38% of apparel and textile imports to the U.S.” Glas added. “In fact, if this increase goes forward it will drive business back to China at a time when the administration is trying to crack down on intellectual property abuses and make systemic trade reforms that have undermined U.S. manufacturing industries for decades. This proposal is extremely concerning to U.S. textile manufacturers and we will do all we can to amplify these concerns with the administration and members of Congress.”

Mexico and Canada together are the U.S. textile industry’s two largest export markets worldwide. In 2018, the U.S. ran a combined $3.8 billion surplus in textiles and apparel with those two North American Free Trade Agreement trading partners.

NCTO is a Washington-based trade association that represents domestic textile manufacturers, including artificial and synthetic filament and fiber producers.

  • U.S. employment in the textile supply chain was 594,147 in 2018.
  • The value of shipments for U.S. textiles and apparel was $76.8 billion in 2018.
  • U.S. exports of fiber, textiles and apparel were $30.1 billion in 2018.
  • Capital expenditures for textile and apparel production totaled $2.0 billion in 2017, the last year for which data is available.

Spider Silk Production Breakthrough From Kraig Biocraft Laboratories

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — May 30, 2019 — Kraig Biocraft Laboratories Inc., a developer of spider silk based fibers, announced today the creation of the next generation of recombinant spider silk using the company’s new design, gene editing, and incorporation approaches. Kraig Labs designed this approach to customize mechanical properties for specific commercial markets and has demonstrated the ability to more quickly, accurately, and efficiently, generate new transgenics.

This is the material science breakthrough that the company has been pushing for since establishing the Dragon Silk line; this new transgenic was specifically engineered for high strength and significantly higher protein expression levels. This achievement marks a significant milestone in Kraig Labs’ mission to produce and commercialize eco-friendly materials that exceed the performance and strength of native spider silk.

“This breakthrough has powerful ramifications that affect the core of how we develop future spider silk materials,” said COO Jon Rice. “These newly confirmed transgenics mark a revolutionary advancement in capability of our spider silk materials. The new tools developed by Dr. Trevor Kane and our research team will allow us to target commercial markets that were not originally on our radar.”

Screening of these samples confirms that the gene edit was successful, validating the underlying protocols and genetic constructs. Furthermore, western blot analysis, performed on the silk, confirms expression of this new and potentially much more powerful spider silk protein. These results open the door for the Company to deploy this new methodology towards a variety of tailored spider silk designs. Kraig Labs expects these new recombinant spider silk fiber lines will open up broader commercial opportunities and complement the Company’s existing Monster Silk™ and Dragon Silk™ technologies.

Applied DNA Closes The Loop On Traceability For Egyptian Pima With Genotyping Assays For Cotton Authentication

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — May 30, 2019 — Applied DNA Sciences Inc., today announced that it has closed the loop on traceability for Egyptian Pima using DNA-based genotyping assays for cotton authentication. These assays have been used to verify fiber and will be extended to yarn, fabric and finished goods in an ongoing validation program. The Egyptian Pima developments join and expand a series of U.S. Pima cotton assays performed within Applied DNA testing services and are based on work conducted over the past three years related to the validation of a known library of cotton cultivar standards.

“This solution closes the loop for the cotton industry that has been under a cloud of controversy surrounding evidence of cotton products labeled as Egyptian cotton versus those which are actually grown in Egypt. There is no substitute for DNA analysis when it comes to cotton traceability and transparency because of its ability to do what other technologies cannot do, which is to forensically authenticate the fiber through to yarn and finished goods,” stated Dr. Michael Hogan, vice president, Life Sciences, Applied DNA. When paired with SigNature® T DNA tagging, testing and tracking of cotton at the gin, it is expected that these new cotton assays, along with other methods of fiber quantitation in the development pipeline at Applied DNA, can now broaden our multiple-parameter analysis to verify the type of cotton, the cotton’s origin, and the blending of the cotton fiber (both valid and surreptitious) during the journey from the ginned fiber to a finished textile product.

In August 2016, the controversy of home bedding and other products labeled 100-percent Egyptian Cotton hit an all-time high when a number of US retailers recalled many products from retail shelves due to label claim violations, and consumers were informed that products did not meet the standard or label requirement. Three years later, Applied DNA will begin to validate and market test products that are labeled to contain 100-percent Egyptian Pima in addition to these services for US Pima. Recently, a federal judge ruled that several “Big Box” stores must face lawsuits claiming they sold linens falsely labeled “Egyptian Cotton.” Applied DNA believes its new Egyptian genotyping assays could assist in protecting against such an imbroglio if the retailers used this technology in their supply chains to verify their goods.

“Our cotton authentication platform of SigNature T and genotyping can provide a means for quality control and compliance in supply chains. Many products use cotton grown in the US and Egypt, and we believe that our system can provide a useful tool to enable brands and manufacturers to verify their products at any stage of the supply chain, that is more exact than other methods claiming to do the same without the same degree of precision,” stated Dr. James Hayward, president and CEO of Applied DNA.

“The Himatsingka Group remains committed to bringing cotton traceability for all major varietals of cotton including Egyptian cotton, while maintaining the highest standards of traceability solutions and quality control mechanisms. We applaud Applied DNA for advancing the solutions for the cotton industry as we believe that DNA science is the new standard for purity and authenticity,” stated Shrikant Himatsingka, CEO of The Himatsingka Group.
