Eastman Launches Naia™ Renew Staple Fiber For Casual Wear, Loungewear

KINGSPORT, Tenn. — April 22, 2021 — In response to consumer demand for comfortable, sustainable clothing, Eastman launched its Naia™ Renew cellulosic staple fiber in the growing women’s casual wear and loungewear market. Sourced from 60-percent wood pulp and 40-percent recycled waste plastics,* it can be produced at scale to deliver sustainability without compromise to the fashion world.

Naia Renew staple fiber has inherent softness, is quick drying and reduces garment pilling. It blends well with other eco-friendly materials such as lyocell, modal and recycled polyester to produce sustainable fabrics and garments that are ideal for everyday comfort wear — whether it’s a busy day on the go or a cozy night on the couch. It is a versatile fiber perfect for T-shirts, comfy pants, jumpsuits and dresses.

“With more consumers seeking all-day comfort and style, the need for sustainable yet soft, cocooning clothing is higher than ever. Today, shoppers looking for sustainable options are not willing to compromise on style nor on quality or durability,” said Carolina Sister Cohn, Eastman’s global segment market manager for fashion. “Naia Renew staple fiber offers sustainable comfort every day, everywhere.”

Fully circular, Naia Renew staple fiber is produced with a low carbon footprint in a closed-loop process where solvents are safely recycled back into the system for reuse. The fiber is produced from wood pulp sourced from certified forests, and the recycled plastics feedstock is generated via Eastman’s patented carbon renewal technology (CRT). CRT is an integrated molecular recycling technology that breaks down waste plastics, such as post-consumer carpet fiber and plastic packaging materials, into basic molecular building blocks for the manufacture of new products including fibers — a truly circular solution creating value from waste.

*Naia™ Renew recycled content is achieved by allocation of plastics using an ISCC-certified mass balance process.

International Yarn Industry Exhibition Filo: Staying Together For Restarting

BIELLA, Italy — April 23, 2021 — “The series of video-interviews “Con le mani” has allowed Filo to keep alive contacts with its exhibitors and visitors at a time when physical fairs were impossible. I find it rather symbolic that the round of video ends just when the official news of the reopening of the fairs arrives: the date is July 1 (and June 15, if they are held in “yellow” areas),” said Paolo Monefermoso, general manager of Filo. “Of course, we welcome the reopening of international fairs from July 1: it gives us the opportunity to prepare the 56th edition of Filo, scheduled at MiCo on September 29 and 30, in the best way and with no more uncertainty. As stressed several times, physical fairs are key for the upstream sectors of the textile supply chain because touching a yarn firsthand is crucial to fully appreciate its quality. The physical fair is also an opportunity for entrepreneurs to meet and exchange opinions: in a difficult moment like the current one, it gives greater awareness of the strength of our industry and therefore allows us to look to the future with more confidence.”

Not surprisingly, the final video of “Con le mani” is a celebration of touch, under the significant title of “A matter of touch” (https://filo.it/questione-di-tatto-con-le-mani/). Through the images of the video, Filo has underlined the role that “hands” (and manufacturing) and “touch” have in the textile industry, as confirmed by all the testimonials we met during our interviews.

“However, another element emerges strongly from the interviews – Monfermoso underlines – It is the desire, or rather the need, to stick together, to work as a team. The people interviewed by Filo consider it the only way to face the future, so as not to lose the Made in Italy heritage of know-how, which today is the basis for the restart of the sector. The 56th edition of Filo, in September, will be an opportunity to give concrete evidence of this.”

The 56a edition of Filo will take place on September 29 e 30, 2021 at MiCo-Milano Convention Centre in Milan.

Oerlikon Signs Agreement To Acquire High Precision Polymer Flow Control Equipment Supplier INglass

PFAEFFIKON/SCHWYZ, Switzerland — April 22, 2021 — Oerlikon, a provider of surface engineering, polymer processing and additive manufacturing technologies, announced today that it has signed an agreement to acquire Italy-headquartered INglass S.p.A. and its innovative hot runner systems technology operating under its market-leading HRSflow business.

The strategic acquisition is a significant step in expanding Oerlikon’s current man-made fibers business into the larger polymer processing market. The acquisition accelerates and enhances existing organic initiatives to diversify and strengthen the company’s core high-precision polymer flow control capabilities, products and services. The completion of the transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals and is expected by the second quarter of 2021.

To reflect Oerlikon’s expansion into a larger high-growth market, the Manmade Fibers Division will be renamed as Polymer Processing Solutions Division. This division will have two business units: Flow Control Solutions and Manmade Fibers Solutions. The business unit Flow Control Solutions will combine the expertise of Oerlikon Barmag’s existing gear metering pumps business line and INglass’ HRSflow operations. The business unit Manmade Fibers Solutions will continue to focus on growing the existing chemical fiber machinery and plant engineering business, offering plant solutions for the production of polyester, polypropylene and nylon.

“Our new Polymer Processing Solutions Division and the acquisition of INglass S.p.A. and its HRSflow business are critical components of Oerlikon Group’s growth strategy. We are accelerating our efforts to drive sustainable organic and inorganic growth in all of our businesses. The acquisition enables new synergy opportunities between both Oerlikon divisions in specific end markets such as automotive. With INglass and its HRSflow operations, we acquire leading suppliers in their markets with proven success of their technologies and services,” said Dr. Roland Fischer, CEO Oerlikon Group.

“We firmly believe that within the Oerlikon Group we can further exploit the potential of our hot runner systems technology and, when combined with the capabilities of Oerlikon Barmag gear metering pumps and their melt distribution engineering competence, will position our business as one of the leading precision flow control specialists for multiple applications in a global growth market”, said Antonio Bortuzzo, CEO of INglass S.p.A.

New business unit offers great growth potential

The Oerlikon Barmag competence brand already offers high precision flow control related components, including a large selection of gear metering pumps for textile and non-textile markets. These highly efficient pumps are used in silicone casting, dynamic mixing and oil spraying for the chemical, paint, polymer processing and automotive industries. This double-digit million CHF business, which has grown in recent years, will be merged with INglass’ HRSflow hot runner technologies under the new business unit Flow Control Solutions. HRSflow’s excellent market access to many OEMs in and outside the automotive industry brings significant growth opportunities.

INglass is a supplier to automotive and expanding in other sectors

INglass S.p.A. is an internationally operating successful company established in 1987. Its product portfolio includes hot runners as well as engineering and consultancy services for the advanced development of polymer processing products. INglass’ HRSflow hot runner systems are applied in multiple industries from automotive, consumer goods and household appliances to packaging, waste management, construction and transportation.

INglass is headquartered in San Polo di Piave, Italy, near Venice. 2020 revenues of INglass were approximately 135 million Swiss francs and the acquisition is expected to be immediately accretive to Oerlikon’s margins and cash flows. INglass has more than 1,000 employees and 55 sites worldwide, including production plants in Italy, China and the United States. Among these sites are INglass’ newly renovated headquarters and production at its primary location in San Polo di Piave near Venice, Italy. The investment modernized the facilities with automated production, underlining the company’s commitment to sustainability and the environment. The other two modern production sites are in Zhejiang (Hangzhou Province) in China and Grand Rapids, Mich.

Following the integration with Oerlikon Barmag’s gear metering pumps business of about 200 employees in Remscheid, Germany, the new Flow Control Solutions business unit will have round about 1 200 employees.

“We see great potential for growth in our new Flow Control Solutions business unit,” said Georg Stausberg, Polymer Processing Solutions Division CEO and Member of the Executive Committee of the Oerlikon Group. “The businesses form the two core growth pillars and benefit from each other in global market development, in modern and digitized production, and in customer services. We also see potential synergies in R&D by combining existing know-how in the field of polymer processing. New technological solutions between hot runner systems and gear metering pumps are conceivable. We also anticipate collaborating more closely with the Oerlikon Surface Solutions Division, particularly in future mobility applications and functional polymer component solutions for the automotive industry. All in all, we will offer our customers innovative and attractive solutions in the field of polymer processing and high precision flow control components.”

Next steps for further diversification of the division product portfolio are already ongoing

Combining the divisions plant engineering and process know how with expertise on high precision flow control components technologies has a significant impact on product quality in nearly all applications, which opens up a platform for further organic and inorganic growth.

“We are closely observing the megatrends in the markets and developing new business models to match. In the area of sustainability, covering topics such as circular economy, the recycling of materials using mechanical and chemical recycling solutions, as well as the handling of new, more environmentally friendly and biodegradable materials, we are on the verge of a breakthrough. We are ready to actively participate in these growth areas,” Stausberg added. “In realigning the Polymer Processing Solutions Division, Oerlikon will continue to apply our successful recipe of a lean organizational structure to efficiently manage the business. This means clear processes, short decision-making paths and competent teams in a diverse and multicultural organization in which everyone can contribute innovatively to create customer value.”.

Merrow Announces A Revolution In Personal Protective Equipment

FALL RIVER, Mass. — April 21, 2021 — In celebration of Earth Day 2021, Merrow Manufacturing is set to debut a revolutionary new line of closed loop, Net Zero PPE™, personal protective equipment that includes medical gowns, surgical caps and scrubs woven with REPREVE® recycled polyester — made using 100-percent recycled post-consumer content from plastic bottles. The first-of-its-kind design and production is a collaborative effort between Merrow, a nearly 200-year-old brand with a deep heritage of product innovation and a leading domestic manufacturer of PPE, and Precision Fabrics Group (PFG), vertically integrated experts in weaving and finishing the most technically challenging continuous-filament fabrics in the world.

The full line of Merrow Medical Net Zero PPE garments includes base layers, scrubs, vests, surgical caps and isolation gowns. For physicians, nurses and healthcare systems, the garments provide a reliable domestic supply chain with a cost per use that is 25- to 33-percent less expensive than the cost of an equivalent disposable garment, thanks to its reusable properties. Merrow Medical Net Zero PPE garments exceed AAMI/PB70 standards and offer the highest level of protection available to frontline workers throughout the life of the garment.

“The Merrow Medical Net Zero PPE garments are the first step to re-engineering the nation’s critically important medical garment/PPE supply chain, utilizing reusable, recyclable materials and manufacturing them in solar-powered factories in the United States,” said Charlie Merrow, CEO of Merrow Manufacturing. “It is vital that we not only create a superior, recyclable medical garment, but also strengthen our national security by rebuilding the supply chain for these products domestically.”

“The Net Zero PPE Program using PFG’s Precision Protection™ medical fabrics is about doing the right thing for our healthcare workers, hospital systems and our environment. It provides the highest protection available to our clinicians at the lowest possible cost to hospital systems, and nearly eliminates the environmental footprint in the process,” said Byron Bassett, PFG corporate vice president. “Our closed loop, recycled, net zero medical fabrics and garments are a drastic disruption to the status quo that involves using a garment once and then disposing it in a landfill.”

As part of the production process, PFG will weave Precision Protection fabrics from REPREVE high-quality, recycled polyester yarn created by Unifi, a leading innovator in recycled and synthetic yarn and fibers. Designed for durability, each garment can be recycled into yarn for a new medical garment, keeping the manufacturing loop closed and reducing the plastics waste stream.
