Lenzing Celebrates One Year Launch Of Carbon-Zero TENCEL™ Branded Fibers With Expansion To REFIBRA™ Technology

LENZING, Austria — September 21, 2021 — Celebrating the first anniversary of the launch of carbon-zero TENCEL™ branded fibers, the Lenzing Group today announced the expansion of carbon-zero TENCEL™ branded fibers to REFIBRA™ technology to address the growing industry demand around “circular fashion” and carbon neutrality. The first carbon-zero Tencel branded lyocell and modal fibers, which launched last year, have continued to gain momentum among industry partners including fashion brands and mills. Available in September 2021, the expansion aims to provide more innovative solutions for fashion brands to meet carbon reduction targets and consumers to enjoy sustainable products, reinforcing Lenzing’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.

The expansion demonstrates Lenzing’s solid commitment to building a truly sustainable textile industry, not only through the reduction of carbon footprint, but also via increased circularity through the REFIBRA™ technology. This pioneering technology involves upcycling cotton scraps from garment production and transforming them into cotton pulp. The cotton pulp is then added to sustainably sourced wood pulp to produce virgin Tencel Lyocell fibers. This innovation reinforces Lenzing’s ongoing effort to the Science Based Targets (SBT) initiative and support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to limit global warming.

“Although more supply chain partners, brands, and retailers are proactively searching for ways to reduce carbon emissions to align with the United Nation’s global climate goals, the textile industry still has a long journey ahead to reach its goal of carbon-zero status. We hope that, by sharing our latest innovations such as the carbon-zero Tencel branded fibers with Refibra technology, we can make carbon-zero initiatives mainstream practices, ultimately achieving a carbon neutral textile industry,” said Florian Heubrandner, vice president, Global Textiles Business at Lenzing AG.

Joining forces with brand and mill partners across the value chain

JACK & JONES, an international leading denim brand and a long-time partner of Lenzing, has been championing sustainability with its low-environmental impact products. This is echoed in the brand’s latest range of jeans that incorporates 38 percent of carbon-zero Tencel Lyocell fibers, offering high environmental value and benefits of long-lasting softness, silky smoothness, enhanced breathability, color retention and being gentle on the skin.

“The JACK & JONES team is delighted to partner with Tencel to bring to life more sustainable products that are also comfortable and of high quality, showcasing our unwavering commitment to enhancing sustainability in the fashion world,” said Mikkel Hochrein Albrektsen, Creative Buying manager of JACK & JONES.

Additionally, Lenzing is expanding collaboration with fashion brands across the globe to integrate carbon-zero Tencel fibers in their latest collections. From leading Chinese lingerie brand, Aimer, Chinese premium home textile brand, Luolai, German fashion label, ARMEDANGELS, Danish clothing label, Selected FEMME, Korean fashion brand Cozynet, Portuguese premium fabric producer and intimate brand, IMPETUS to U.S.-based home furnishings retailer, West Elm, companies across the fashion and home segments are actively reviewing their raw material usage to go carbon-zero. Through a “reduce-engage-offset” approach, Lenzing is also working closely with supply chain partners such as Al Karam, Calik, Samil and WTS to innovate raw material usage and technologies to bring new sustainable fiber types to the textile market.

“As a textile producer, it is our responsibility to enhance sustainability in the textile industry,” said Luis Antonio Aspillaga, CEO of WTS (World Textile Sourcing). “We are proud to collaborate with Lenzing and offer eco- friendly products which uses carbon-zero TENCEL™ fibers, thus contributing to the well-being and protection of our planet.”

Building on carbon zero and circularity momentum to achieve net-zero by 2050

By offering carbon-zero Tencel fibers with REFIBRA technology, Lenzing provides the industry more sustainable material options right from the beginning of the product life cycle, bringing Lenzing one step closer to its goal of reaching zero carbon emissions by 2050. Moving forward, Lenzing will continue to work with industry partners to reduce the product’s carbon footprint and offset unavoidable emissions to ultimately drive decarbonization in the textile industry.

Evolon® Receives Made In Green by OEKO-TEX® Certification For Sustainable Production And Safe Products

COLMAR, France — September 21, 2021 — Evolon® fabrics are well-known for combining high performance technical properties with numerous ecological benefits in many durable applications. Furthermore, according to the independent OEKO-TEX® institute, Evolon fabrics also meet the most stringent requirements in terms of sustainability and health and safety. Freudenberg in Colmar, France, recently received the STeP by OEKO-TEX® label for Evolon. The fabric was also granted the MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX® label. This confirms the brand’s commitment to sustainable practices and products.

Certificates awarded by the independent Oeko-Tex institute are highly respected and trusted by the textile industry because they are 100 percent transparent, 100 percent independent, 100 percent textile. For manufacturers, they are confirmation of ecologically and socially responsible production and products — a quality characteristic that plays a growing role in purchasing decisions of companies as well as for end-users.

By awarding the STeP (Sustainable Leather & Textile Production) label, the Oeko-Tex institute recently certified environmentally friendly production processes, a high level of health and safety and socially responsible working conditions at the Freudenberg site in Colmar. The company scored top marks and reached the highest grade of certification, namely Level 3, for “exemplary implementation of best practices”.

“Evolon fabrics have already held the Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex label for more than twenty years. This is one of the world’s best-known certificates confirming that textiles have been tested for harmful substances. Here too, Evolon meets the most stringent requirements, and is ranked in product class I, which stands for suitability with baby skin contact,” explained Achraf Khedimi, head of Global Sales Evolon.

As a result of the combination of STeP and Standard 100 certificates, Evolon meets all the requirements for the coveted Made In Green by Oeko-Tex label. This proves that a product has been tested for harmful substances and manufactured using sustainable processes under socially responsible working conditions. The certificate also confirms the complete traceability of all materials and a transparent supply chain, and thus offers consumers the highest level of safety.

Last but not least, compliance with DETOX TO ZERO by OEKO-TEX® criteria is fully achieved as part of the SteP certification. This specifically covers chemicals management and wastewater quality, following an initiative of Greenpeace which aims at eliminating harmful substances in the textile industry.

Life Cycle Assessment Demonstrates BASF’s Man-Made Leather Solution Haptex® Has Environmental Benefits

SHANGHAI, China — September 21, 2021 — A comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of BASF’s man-made leather solution Haptex® demonstrates the significant environmental benefits compared to other conventional synthetic leather solutions. The LCA was conducted by Intertek — a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide.

“By commissioning an LCA at such an early stage, we are enabling life cycle considerations to be factored in the manufacturing process. This supports OEMs and their customers such as footwear, automotive, and furniture brands in determining the right material — such as Haptex, which demonstrated significant environmental benefits — for their next innovation,” said Yunlong Ma, general manager, Green Initiatives, Intertek.

The LCA study is based on a total value chain analysis of Haptex from its chemical production to the finished leather goods. The performance on greenhouse effect, cumulative energy demand, and water consumption figures were also calculated and measured.

The LCA study shows that Haptex outperformed synthetic leathers from solvent- based and waterborne-based man-made leather processes, in terms of carbon emissions. For instance, Haptex was proven to produce 52-percent less greenhouse gas

emissions than conventional synthetic leather, with more than a 20-percent reduction in energy consumption when using 1KG of chemicals for man-made leather production. This is predominantly due to eliminating the wet line from the production processes, which reduces 30-percent of water usage compared to usual solvent-based polyurethane production methods.

The results proved that Haptex is a more sustainable alternative for products made with man-made leather, such as automotive seatings, furniture, and footwear and fashion accessories like bags and caps.

Haptex possesses high peel strength, anti-yellowing, and high abrasion performance properties. Haptex also does not use any organotin catalysts or plasticizer.

In collaboration with Warren Synthetic Leather (Suzhou) Co. Ltd. and Suzhou Greentech Co. Ltd., the product has been further optimized to increase its performance, yet meets stringent VOC standards.

“The report comes at a time when pressure mounts on brands and OEMs to make stronger efforts towards sustainability by choosing alternative and animal-free leather for their products. Therefore, we must provide concrete information on environmental emissions and how we are reducing the CO2 footprint to our customers. With this study, Haptex has proven that it is more sustainable compared to other conventional synthetic leather solutions, and at the same time can fulfill the different conventional requirements from OEMs and brands to produce products that are durable, stylish and eco-conscious,” said Minli Zhao, vice president, Consumer Industry, Performance Materials Asia Pacific, BASF.

Spinnova Receives Climate Leadership Coalition’s Carbon Handprint Recognition

HELSINKI — September 21, 2021 — To celebrate the Zero emissions day today, the Climate Leadership Coalition (CLC) in Finland launched the world’s first Carbon Handprint Recognition. One of the two recognitions was given to Spinnova’s textile fiber innovation that, compared to cotton, saves as much as 65 percent of CO2 emissions.

Climate Leadership Coalition has today given out ”The most climate positive product” recognition for the first time, as part of the Zero emissions day started in 2017. The innovation recognition for great potential in carbon footprint was given to the textile fibre that Spinnova has developed to e.g. replace cotton use in textile products. The greenhouse gas emissions of cotton production globally is estimated to be more than 50 million metric tons CO2e. According to pre-commercial scale calculations, the carbon footprint of Spinnova’s fibre is 65 percent smaller than cotton’s*.

“Continuous improvement of our carbon handprint is a big deal to us; one that’s been considered from the very start. A climate friendly product must absolutely also be produced with minimal impact,” said Spinnova’s Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder Juha Salmela.

The other recognition was given to the most climate positive carbon handprint product, Neste’s NesteMY Renewable Diesel™, that helps reduce motoring emissions by as much as 90 percent compared to fossil fuels.

The Zero emission day’s mission is to give the planet a day off from fossil emissions and add awareness of the drawbacks of carbon emissions. The theme day’s goal is to inspire people to make climate friendly choices in their personal everyday lives. In 2021, the event was held in collaboration with the Finnish city of Lahti, the EU Green Capital 2021.

Climate Leadership Coalition is Europe’s largest non-profit climate business network. The market value of CLC’s corporate members represents almost 70 percent of companies listed in the Helsinki stock exchange. CLC members believe that the societal transformation towards a sustainable economy and consumption is not only possible, but also financially profitable.

Growing the positive impact; carbon handprint, is becoming an essential goal for companies, and many CLC members have already defined a metered carbon handprint for their products and services.

* Calculated cradle to gate, i.e. from the raw material farming to the fiber process, not taking into account the consumer’s part of emissions over the entire lifecycle.
