Engineered Solutions Acquires Rocan

Textile research and consulting services provider Engineered Solutions PLLC, Charlottesville, Va., has purchased the intellectual and technical assets of Greensboro, N.C.-based consultancy and technology management services provider Rocan Inc. The acquisition includes a technical library containing a collection of reference files and publications relating to the flammability of textiles.

The two companies partnered in 2009 to expand research services and technical services related to textile product flammability. Retired Rocan Founder Clyde T. Cante will serve as an advisor to Engineered Solutions and its president, Hardy Poole.  

Engineered Solutions’ laboratory in Burlington, N.C., is equipped to perform microscopy and chemical analysis of textile materials as well as flammability testing in accordance with government and voluntary industry standards.

Green Applications To Establish Manufacturing In Virginia

Secaucus, N.J.-based textile printer and distributor Green Applications LLC — a division of Green Distribution — is investing $9.75 million to set up manufacturing operations and create 323 jobs in Gordonsville, Va.
 
Established in 2009, Green Applications has grown from a small printing operation employing six people to one of the largest printers and distributors of textile merchandise and heat-applied graphics on the East Coast, with a current workforce totaling more than 450 people. Its 100,000-square-foot (ft2) Secaucus facility houses a screen-printing operation, and it has another operation elsewhere in the Northeast that manufactures heat-applied graphics. The company currently prints and distributes more than 50,000 shirts and garments daily, and its customers include well-known global brands.
 
The company is installing machinery and equipment in a 170,000-square-foot facility that formerly housed a printer of catalogs and special interest magazines that closed in 2011, putting more than 100 people out of work. The facility will house screen-printing and heat-applied graphics operations as well as a distribution operation, and is expected to open in mid- to late summer of this year. It is situated on a 33-acre site, and there is potential to expand as the need arises.
 
According to Green Applications Owner and CEO Robert Butters, manufacturing operations in the Northeast will continue, but some distribution activity will be consolidated at the Gordonsville site. “We’ve had a really successful couple of years, and we need more space and we need to grow our workforce. Geographically, it really makes sense to be in the middle of the East Coast, but we also need our Northeast presence.
 
Butters noted that from its new location in Virginia, the company will be able to ship product to any location on the East Coast within two days. “As the textile print and embellishment industry moves back to domestic production, being located in the center of the East Coast allows us to deliver quick-turn and strategic solutions to our customers,” he said, adding, “I am excited by the tremendous growth potential in the region.”
 
“It is a pleasure to welcome Green Applications to Virginia as the company further expands its footprint on the East Coast,” said Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, who has approved a $540,000 Governor’s Opportunity Fund grant to assist local governments with the project.

Fourth Presentation Of ITMA ASIA + CITME Sold Out Ahead Of Event

SINGAPORE — March, 14, 2014 — The fourth combined ITMA ASIA + CITME exhibition is gearing up for another mega showcase in Shanghai, China.

To be held from 16 to 20 June 2014 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, the show will gross 152,200 square metres in 13 halls, 15 per cent larger than the last edition in 2012. To-date, the event has attracted the participation of 1,351 textile machinery manufacturers from 27 countries and regions.

Taking up the largest exhibition area are Chinese exhibitors, booking slightly over 66 per cent. European manufacturers, taking over 22 per cent of the total exhibition space, are the next biggest contingent.

As China’s textile industry continues its transformation, the demand for advanced machinery and technology is on the rise. This is also reflected in the current uptrend in textile machinery trade.”

According to statistics from the General Administration of Customs, China’s exports of textiles and garments amounted to US$26 billion in 2013. This is an increase of 7 per cent over the same period last year.

China continues to focus on upgrading technology and skills to reach an international level for textile and other industry sectors, and this is one of the priorities under the government’s 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015).

Aspland To Receive Olney Medal, AATCC’s Highest Award

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — March 13, 2014 — John Richard “Dick” Aspland is the 2013 recipient of the Olney Medal for outstanding achievement in the field of textile chemistry. The Olney Medal, the highest award presented by AATCC, is for outstanding lifetime achievement in a field of major importance to textile science.

Aspland’s research has included a wide range of textile chemistry interests including fluorescence of dyeings and laundered fabrics (bispectralspectrometry); fastness properties of dyeings on novel polymers; implementation of novel shade sorting software for color users from color-instrument manufacturers to apparel cutters; the influence of fiber, yarn, and fabric parameters on the physical properties of coated fabrics; synthesis of isotopic tracers for studying diffusion in nylon dyeing; the effect of color distribution on the color appearance of yarns, fibers, and fabrics (microspectrometry); and the interactions between pigment particles and polymers.

Aspland has been active in textile chemistry for more than 50 years as scientist, researcher, and educator in academia and industry. His book, Textile Dyeing and Coloration, published by AATCC in 1997, has been used as a “premier text on dyeing.” Aspland and his former student, Ann Laidlaw, together published the AATCC Color Guidebook in 2011. Aspland has published more than 145 articles in peer-reviewed journals and in conference proceedings, three peer-reviewed book chapters, and holds two patents.

A member of AATCC since 1971, Aspland received the AATCC Harold C. Chapin Award for service to AATCC in 1999. In 2005, he received the AATCC William J. Weaver Paper of the Year Award for his contributions to textile science literature. He also received the Award for Faculty Excellence in 2000 and 2002 from the Clemson University Board of Trustees, the J.J. Lyons Distinguished Teacher Award in 1995-96, and the College of Commerce and Industry Teacher of the Year Award for 1993-94. He was elected Fellow of the Textile Institute in 1988 and Fellow of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (C.Col.F.S.D.C.) in 1968. He has been a senior member, Fellow, and Examiner with the SDC since 1956, and a fellow of the Textile Institute since 1987. He is also a member of the Inter-Society Color Council and the Fiber Society. He has traveled extensively nationally and internationally, as invited speaker or as consultant/trainer, on programs of dyes, dyeing, finishing, and color and textile chemistry. Aspland’s outreach extends from the local community to the greater textile industry.

INDA Honors Nonwoven Industry Professionals With Lifetime Achievement Awards

CARY, N.C. — March 14, 2014 — INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, has recognized two expert nonwoven industry advocates with its most prestigious awards in 2014. Joseph D. Wahlquist of Rockline Industries was honored for Lifetime Technical Achievement and Thomas A. Justice of Zene, LLC for Lifetime Service.

INDA President David Rousse presented the awards at the association’s Annual Meeting & Leadership Conference March 10-12 at Sawgrass Marriott in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Wahlquist’s experience and commitment to the nonwovens industry was a critical, determining factor in earning him the 2014 Lifetime Technical Achievement Award. He has a long history of technical innovation leading to the development of Intellectual Property creating new products and processes. Wahlquist holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a master’s degree in marketing from the University of Wisconsin. He has held the position of Vice President of Global Materials Development for the past 14 years at Rockline Industries.

“Joe Wahlquist has had an integral role for key technical developments in the nonwovens/engineered fabrics industry. His many years of service and contributions towards six patents have garnered him much respect and recognition throughout the industry. Plus, he has been an active member on many INDA Committees sharing his technical insights. Joe is extremely deserving of this honor,” said Rousse.

The INDA Lifetime Service Award recognizes an individual who has a long-established record of service to INDA and the nonwoven/engineered fabrics industry. Justice received the award for his outstanding contributions and tireless efforts in helping INDA and the industry grow. Justice has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University and is currently the Principal at Zene, LLC.

Rousse said, “Tom Justice has been a champion for INDA and INDA activities. He has been a significant key contributor as an INDA Filtration Committee member and, subsequently, its chairperson, resulting in outstanding program content for our filtration events. INDA greatly appreciates his expertise, wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm for making INDA activities successful, and is proud to honor Tom with this award.”

High-Performance Group And Crawford Composites Introduces Formula Lites

 CHARLOTTE, N.C. — March 8, 2014 — High Performance Group, along with Crawford Composites, LLC, has announced the formation of the Formula Lites series and the debut of the Formula Lites Crawford (FL15) chassis. This collaboration brings High Performance Group’s Dennis McCormack, a 43-year motorsports veteran and former Indy Car team owner and SCORE Baja Champion driver Ryan Arciero, together with Max Crawford of Crawford Composites, LLC, a leader in designing and producing autoclaved composites for the car racing industry.

The series, sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing and scheduled to launch in 2014 at select events with a full schedule in 2015, aims at developing drivers interested in entering professional motorsports, including those who seek to make the leap from karting to open-wheel racing.

“The Formula Lites series provides economy, available resources and an emphasis on safety while giving drivers the opportunity to develop their skills to progress into higher levels of open-wheel racing,” states Dennis McCormack. “SCCA Pro Racing was a natural partner for us, having worked so closely with them in the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup program. Scriven focused on state-of-the-art technology to produce a competitively priced, innovative and exciting chassis to pilot. The new FL15 has exceptional electronics and paddleshift designed by Crawford Composites’ in-house Controls Group.

The FL15 is powered by a 2 liter, 210 HP turbo Volkswagen engine. Pirelli is supplying tires, ensuring the same quality and consistency afforded to Formula 1 racing is also present in Formula Lites. Sports car racing legend and renowned driver, Elliott Forbes-Robinson, is overseeing the test drive program. Each vehicle will be 100 percent ready to race when driven off of Crawford Composites’ lot.

CEMATEX Continues To Promote Research And Education With Grant To Institutes Participating At ITMA 2015

SINGAPORE — March 12, 2014 — The European Committee of Textile Machinery Manufacturers, CEMATEX, has announced that it will provide a grant to all participants of the Research & Education Pavilion at ITMA 2015.
 
Charles Beauduin, President of CEMATEX, explained; “Investments in research and development, as well as education and training, are extremely important if the textile and garment industry is to stay ahead of the technology curve. Due to strong response and positive feedback following our initiative at ITMA 2011, we have decided to continue to provide the grant to pavilion participants at ITMA 2015.”
 
He added, “We are inviting even more institutions to leverage on the ITMA platform to showcase their projects, capabilities and programmes, and these institutions will be able to enjoy discounts of at least 50 percent of their booth cost.”

The Research & Education (R&E) pavilion provides an excellent platform for ITMA visitors to keep abreast of the latest research projects on garments, home textiles as well as technical textiles and nonwovens. The pavilion was a major feature at the last ITMA exhibition in Barcelona, Spain, in 2011. It received overwhelming support from the industry. A total of 48 exhibitors from 20 countries took part in the pavilion, which also saw the debut of The European Textile Research & Education Pavilion. The Speakers Platform attached to the pavilion attracted 29 international speakers from 10 countries.

According to Jeroen Vits, Secretary General of SYMATEX (Belgium) who chaired the ITMA 2011 R&E Committee, there was strong participation from research organisations from around the world. The pavilion had the support of AUTEX, the Association of Universities for Textiles, which has 32 members from 24 countries, and TEXTRANET – European Network of Textile Research Organisations. A memorandum of understanding was also signed with EURATEX — the European Apparel and Textile Confederation — to formalise a stronger collaboration in fields such as research, technological development and innovations.

ITMA 2015 will be held from 12 to 19 November 2015 at Fiera Milano Rho in Milan Italy. Owned by CEMATEX, ITMA is the world’s largest textile and garment technology showcase, which has been held since 1951. The last ITMA exhibition was held in Barcelona, Spain, in 2011. It featured 1,355 exhibitors from 45 countries, visitorship of 100,067 from 140 countries and some 50 delegations from 27 countries.

Yarbrough Named CRI Pesident

DALTON, Ga. — March 13, 2014 — The chairman and board of directors of the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) announce that Joe W. Yarbrough has been selected to lead the non-profit carpet industry trade group as president. He will begin his duties March 31, replacing current president Werner Braun, who is retiring.

Yarbrough comes to CRI from Mohawk Industries, where he most recently served as senior vice president for advanced manufacturing engineering. Earlier in his career, he spent six years with Coronet Industries and was later vice president for manufacturing for Aladdin Mills when that company merged with Mohawk in 1994.

David Jolly, president and CEO of J Flooring Group and current CRI board chairman, says the CRI board of directors is very pleased to welcome Joe Yarbrough as the next president of the CRI.   “With his 40-plus years of carpet industry experience, Joe brings an unprecedented array of knowledge, experience, and insight regarding our customers, markets, and opportunities.”   

An active supporter of CRI’s volunteer leadership, Yarbrough is a current member and immediate past-chairman of CRI’s Strategic Issues Leadership Council. According to Jolly, Yarbrough’s depth of experience with CRI will benefit the organization as well as the industry as a whole.
     
“With Joe there will be no ramp-up time in assuming his duties, as he is very knowledgeable of the CRI mission, staff, and goals,” he said.   

A Georgia native, Yarbrough has resided in Dalton since 1972. He and his wife, Nanette, have five children and eight grandchildren. He is an active member of Grove Level Baptist Church and participates in a number of humanitarian and industry organizations, including Ross Woods Adult Day Services.  He is also a member of the board of Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE), chairman of the state board of the Technical College System of Georgia, and member and past chairman of the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce. He also serves on the board of commissioners for Dalton Utilities.
     
“I sincerely look forward to working with the CRI member companies and their representatives and the dedicated CRI staff in order to advance the mission and objectives of this great organization, while helping everyone recognize the excellence and value of the products our industry is sending to market,” Yarbrough said.

The Rupp Report: Latest News For INDEX 14

A few weeks ago, the Rupp Report informed its readers about the forthcoming INDEX, the international nonwovens exhibition that will take place in Geneva April 8-11, 2014 (See “The Rupp Report: INDEX 2014 — Showcase For The Nonwovens Industry,” TextileWorld.com, February 11, 2014). In a recent meeting, Helen Rushton, product development manager of INDEX organizer Palexpo, informed the Rupp Report about the latest developments.
 
As of press time, more than 560 exhibitors have confirmed their attendance. On the other hand, the organizers are expecting some 12,500 visitors at the exhibition. At the 2011 event, 530 exhibitors from 43 countries presented their latest products to more than 12,600 visitors.
 
Extended Programs
In addition to the exhibition, the four days will be packed with all kinds of events. INDEX 14 will have a program including free-of-charge conferences and wants to provide a platform for exchanging knowledge as well as the possibility to network with high-level business contacts from around the world.
 
As ever, EDANA, the International Association Serving the Nonwovens and Related Industries, will announce the winners of the INDEX 14 Awards and hand them over the first day of the exhibition. According to Rushton, “The Awards are designed to encourage and acknowledge innovation, creativity and sustainability, their raw materials and the machinery used in making or converting nonwovens.” It can be said without exaggeration that the INDEX Awards are the top honor for the best examples of excellence in the nonwovens industry and underline outstanding developments. “The interest in the awards has been strong and the entries, depending on categories, are assessed on creative ideas, new technologies, innovative features and/or sustainability,” Rushton added.
 
Automotive Nonwovens Forum
The automotive industry is one sector in which nonwovens have penetrated and almost taken over a lot of applications. A vehicle without textiles is hardly possible and rather unthinkable, not only for passenger cars and trucks, but also for racing cars with their lightweight composite materials and prepregs. Today, more than 20 kilograms of textiles and nonwovens are used in every passenger car.
 
To bring attention to this fact, EDANA will present a conference covering the main applications and most recent trends in nonwovens for the automotive industry on Tuesday, April 8, from 1.30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Presenters will include key decision-makers from the supply chain including manufacturers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), as well as nonwovens and materials suppliers. The event will also include the launch of a video pointing out the benefits and applications of nonwovens in the automotive industry, including their contribution to performance, comfort, and efficient resource use. The video is said to present the use of nonwovens in more than 30 locations in modern vehicles. Rushton explained that the video “will also focus on how their diverse qualities and ability to be engineered for specific properties make them an ideal component in the design and construction of the full range of transportation, including automobiles, airplanes, trains, boats and even space shuttles.” As the Rupp Report was informed, there is still some room for first-class speakers with a striking topic.
 
Geotextiles
Since the invention of nonwovens, geotextiles have played a major role in research and development and are a cornerstone of global nonwovens production. Next to woven fabrics, there is a very wide diversity of nonwovens — including needlepunched, spunbond and spunlace material — applied all around the world.
 
The organizers are also paying attention to this fact at this year’s INDEX: there will also be a free geotextiles workshop on Tuesday afternoon. Nonwovens-related innovations in the field to be discussed include: “Effects of Nonwoven Geotextiles: Pilot Experiments Aimed at Reducing Snow and Ice Melt at the Presena Glacier (Trento, Italy),” presented by Antonella Senese, University of Milan; and “The Nonwoven Market for Geotextiles — Application Trends, Growth Opportunities and Market Dynamics,” presented by Silke Brand-Kirsch, Schlegel and Partners GmbH, Germany. Schlegel and Partners reports it is one of the key market research institutes in the nonwovens segment.
 
Of particular interest is the presentation “Applications and New Challenges for Geotextiles — Opportunities for Nonwovens: Transportation Applications — Designs, Specifications, Installation and Applications,” presented by Stephen Corbet, technical director, AECOM Technology Corp., a Los Angeles-based Fortune 500 company with revenues of US$8.2 billion in 2013. The company claims to be a “global provider of professional technical and management support services to a broad range of markets, including transportation, facilities, environmental, energy, water and government with some 45,000 employees around the world.”
 
Other geotextile topics also will be presented. Daniele Cazzuffi, Ph.D., past president of the International Geosynthetics Society and chair of the European Committee for Standardization on Geosynthetics (CEN/TC 189), will lead the discussions.
 
Nonwovens In Packaging
The rising global flow of goods provoked the development of another important segment of nonwovens: packaging. To pay tribute to this promising sector, a conference on Wednesday, April 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., is dedicated to packaging innovations and will provide market and practical research data for this sector. “Packaging applications of nonwovens are growing at a strong pace with a wide range of exciting applications,” reports George Kellie, Ph.D., director, Kellie Solutions Ltd., United Kingdom.
 
Presenters include Marc Levillain of France-based JX Nippon ANCI SAS, who will discuss “Cross Laminated Nonwoven Open Mesh Fabric for Packaging”; and Suna Karakurd of Karweb Airlaid Products, Turkey, who will discuss “A New Composite Airlaid Process and Materials for Long Shelf Life.”
 
Research & Innovation Showcase
A Nonwovens Research & Innovation Showcase will take place on Friday morning, April 11, and is open to research institutes that are EDANA members and/or exhibitors. Keynote speaker Mathieu Mottrie of Belgium-based Creax Projects NV will discuss how developments in one industry sector can commercially benefit another sector. The session will highlight the newest offerings from institutes in the field of nonwovens testing and pilot plants, approaches to innovation by nonwovens research establishments, and cross-fertilization.
 
Nonwovens For Beginners
Still today, the nonwovens sector is quite new for some textile producers and peripheral industries. And many interested parties — mostly trying to start their own business — are coming to INDEX to have an overview of this ever-so-promising sector. For these visitors, as in 2011, EDANA will offer a so-called “taster” tutorial covering such topics as general nonwovens, absorbent hygiene products and nonwovens in filtration applications.
 
As described by EDANA: “These one-hour introductory sessions will provide fundamental entry-level information on nonwovens: what they are, how they are formed and consolidated, the materials used, and where are they manufactured. Intended for newcomers to the industry, or any interested potential user of nonwovens in one or more of their multiple end-uses, they provide a valuable insight into the potential of these valuable materials.”

Huntsman Introduces Eriofast® Navy M

Singapore-based Huntsman Textile Effects has introduced Eriofast® Navy M reactive dye for achieving navy and royal blue shades with good wetfastness on polyamide and polyamide/elastane blends including microfibers.
 
According to the company, the dye — which is suitable for premium sportswear, swimwear and lingerie applications — may be used as a self-shade or in combination with Eriofast Blue 3R or Eriofast Black M to provide intense royal blue, deep dull navy and bluish-black navy shades. Huntsman reports the dye process is short and simple; and that the dye used in combination with Eriofast FX exhausts smoothly and uniformly, providing fast, level and reproducible color. Other reported benefits include good color continuity under different light sources, durability, and the ability to achieve unique color blocking effects for blue and white or color-contrast styles.
 
Huntsman also reports that because the dye does not require hydrophobic fixing agents to improve fastness, the fabrics have a naturally soft, comfortable, moisture-absorbing hand.
 
Eriofast Navy M dye is certified to OEKO-TEX®, bluesign®, Responsible Care® and European Union textile standards; and complies with the Restricted Substances List requirements. It also has been registered as a novel dye under the United Kingdom’s Society of Dyers and Colourists Colour Index System and has been nominated for a SDC Innovation Award.
