Industrial Digital Textile Printing: Epson Announces Two New Innovation Hubs in Como, Italy

MILAN, Italy/TOKYO — December 15, 2016 — Seiko Epson Corp. has announced two new hub sites dedicated to the development of new industrial digital textile products. The Innovation Research Lab, focusing on ink technology R&D, has been created by Epson together with For.Tex. The Printing Research Center, in collaboration with F.lli Robustelli, a major player in production engineering for textile printers and recently acquired by Epson, will aid future development of Epson inkjet core technology dedicated to textile printing.

The two new sites join Epson’s established Textile Solution Center in Como, Italy. With the opening of these facilities, Epson, For.Tex and F.lli Robustelli have realized their vision to create a worldwide hub for the digital textile printing industry based in Italy.

“We are delighted to announce the establishment of the Innovation Research Lab and The Printing Research Center in Como,” said Sunao Murata, chief operating officer, of Epson’s Professional Printing Operations Division. “These state-of-the-art R&D facilities symbolize Epson’s strong commitment to accelerating the development of digital textile inkjet printing both in the Como region and the rest of the world.”

The Digital Textile Printing Industry

In 2014 alone, approximately 31 billion square meters of fabric was printed worldwide, of which approximately 2-3 percent was produced using digital technologies*1. 2015 represented a landmark year for the digital textiles market which, according to WtiN Intelligence, print volume is expected to increase by about 17 percent year on year until 2019*2.

The use of digital technologies for printing drawings, patterns and visual effects on textiles and other surfaces is well established and is growing quickly, replacing traditional analogue technologies in several areas. Digital technologies used in industrial volume production create a challenge for inks and auxiliary chemical compound manufacturers. However, thanks to technological innovation, the digital printing market is constantly evolving with customers requesting products capable of supporting the complete manufacturing cycle and that ensure quality, productivity and reliability without compromise.

The Innovation Research Lab

With the aim of researching and developing new inks for industrial digital printing on a wide array of materials, the Innovation Research Lab is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies and is staffed with a team of highly-skilled technologists and researchers (chemical engineers, chemical analysts, lab technicians, etc.). The Lab is committed to research that will increase industrial ink performance and sustainability on behalf of Epson.

The Printing Research Center

The Printing Research Center, located in F.lli Robustelli’s head office, will aid product development of inkjet core devices, ensuring the continued development of the highest quality textile printers for Epson.

Commitment to innovation and excellence

Epson, F.lli Robustelli and For.tex have been collaborating since 2003, when they launched the Monna Lisa digital textile printer. In 2014 the Textile Solution Center (TSC) was established as the world’s first hub for the development and promotion of digital fabric printing with the aim of increasing quality, productivity and reliability of digital printing technologies*3. The center, created with an overall investment of 2 million euros, brings the entire industrial production process under one roof and provides invaluable support to textile businesses, young designers, fashion schools and institutes. This 3,000-square-meter facility provides a unique opportunity to reproduce the industrial process of digital fabric printing, from pre-treatment and actual printing to steaming, washing, drying and finishing.

Leader In Outdoor Gear Adopts Shopfloor Solution To Support Phenomenal Growth

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — December 15, 2016 — Shopfloor Support LLC has announced that Hyperlite Mountain Gear Inc. has successfully adopted its Shopfloor Eye™ real-time shop floor control solution at its Biddeford, Maine, facility. After using the wireless production management software for just three months, the leader in ultralight packs, tents, shelters and other outdoor adventure gear reports measurable gains in overall productivity and increased process visibility and control.

“With growth nearly doubling each year, we knew that we needed to deploy the best engineering and systems available to meet demand and cost-effectively produce here in the USA,” explained Hyperlite Mountain Gear Director of Operations John Schafer. “While we have always been committed to continuous improvement, the Shopfloor system gives us the opportunity to have a “new conversation” on our shop floor; one that is based on coaching around real-time production information, visibility and profitability. We have quickly found that this system empowers us to consistently meet production standards, balance our production line, and guarantee maximum efficiency.”

To rapidly implement and prove the benefits of the new system, Schafer, a veteran of global manufacturing, set up a new team-based “Pack Express Line” manufacturing cell. While workers are not paid on industry-traditional piecework incentives, engineering studies were conducted to determine efficient production standards for each of the many steps involved in producing backpacks. Based on the tremendous results achieved, Hyperlite Mountain Gear is making plans to deploy the Shopfloor system across its entire production operation next month.

“Before Shopfloor, managing production was like driving a car by looking through the rear-view mirror,” continued Schafer. “Now we are looking forward with the benefit of seeing and being able to respond to any potential obstacles. We have never had this level of shop floor information and control before; especially in such a cost-effective solution.”

Shopfloor Support is further developing its Simple BOM™ capabilities to enable Hyperlite Mountain Gear pre-production teams to use their tablets to scan work orders and more accurately pick all components (often upwards of 60 parts) needed to produce packs. Shopfloor also plans to develop software tools to eliminate parts picking errors by verifying precise bins and shelf locations, and to manage work-in-process collection areas where specific products can be staged for specific operations or processing.

“We applaud the Hyperlite Mountain Gear team for their commitment to Made in USA, their production teams and their efficiency,” noted Shopfloor Support Partner Justin Hershoran. “We enjoy their partnership and look forward to a long and highly productive relationship.”

Hygienically Clean Healthcare Advisory Enhances Standard Increases inspections And Gathering Sample Surface Testing Results

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — December 14, 2016 — The Hygienically Clean Healthcare Advisory recently voted to enhance the program by adding a second “supplemental inspection” within a facility’s three-year certification period. In addition, the Advisory re-confirmed its philosophy of focusing on outcome-based best management practices (BMPs) and Quality Assurance (QA) that directly impact the cleanliness of healthcare linens and garments.

“An additional inspection enhances the Hygienically Clean Healthcare Standard by increasing validation,” said Advisory Chair Randy Bartsch, Ecotex Healthcare Linen Service. “We are also authorizing inspectors to conduct sample ATP critical control point surface testing within the laundry to identify potential risk areas and for future consideration into the Hygienically Clean Healthcare Standard testing protocols.”

The Advisory also received an update from Certification Manager Angela Freeman: 132 plants from 53 companies are currently certified or pursuing Hygienically Clean Healthcare certification with a 100 percent recertification renewal rate for 2016.

Finally, the Advisory discussed potential research projects to strengthen hygienically clean processes and increase the use of reusable textiles and discussed issues identified by Hygienically Clean’s independent, third-party inspectors. In addition, the Advisory received a review of 2017 marketing initiatives and outreach including the launch of TRSA’s Healthcare Community extending the distribution and access of healthcare-related resources, news, trends and best practices to thousands of individuals responsible for the handling and management of healthcare textiles.

The Advisory reconvened following the Conference to discuss a recently released study (FEMS Microbiology Letters, “Clostridium difficile environmental contamination within a clinical laundry facility in the USA,” October 14, 2016), as well as subsequent coverage and responses from other organizations. The Advisory agreed that the study did not identify any risks to healthcare workers or patients and that comments made by other organizations were misleading, creating false concerns regarding the cleanliness of healthcare textiles.

“Hygienically Clean Healthcare protocols include testing for clostridium difficile (C. diff),” stated Freeman. “With thousands of textile tests completed, none have indicated any significant levels of C. diff.”
