Textile-Circuit From KARL MAYER – Warp Knitting Technology Produces Innovative E-Textiles

OBERTSHAUSEN, Germany — January 28, 2019 — Textiles can be used for heating, cooling and lighting. They can measure the heart rate, as well as monitor soil erosion on slopes, and can even be launched into space for use as space reflectors – as long as they are electrically conductive.

The electrical conductivity of warp-knitted textiles is the subject of extensive development work at KARL MAYER. In this project, entitled “textile-circuit”, multibar raschel machines are used with and without a jacquard facility to incorporate conductive yarns directly into the textile during manufacture. The first results are now available and show what can be achieved, including the use of textiles for remote control. The original control tool and its production principles were both successfully shown at the IDTechEx Show in Santa Clara and at the Aachen-Dresden-Denkendorf International Textile Conference, both of which were held in November 2018.

The pattern provides electrical conductivity

Electrically conductive structures with a virtually unlimited range of designs can be produced on multibar raschel machines. This is possible, thanks to multibar patterning using Karl Mayer’s innovative string bar system, with which the yarns can be positioned individually and as required onto a ground – following the principles of tailored fiber placement. The ground can be produced with a wide variety of different designs, and jacquard patterns can also be worked, depending on the type of machine.

As well as offering extensive design freedom, warp knitting also delivers maximum efficiency when producing electrically conductive textiles. Furthermore, the typical performance features of textiles, such as softness, flexibility, elasticity and breathability, are fully retained.

Production without any problems

At the functional heart of these innovative E-warp-knitted textiles are filaments containing metal, such as ELITEX®. In the experience of Sophia Krinner, a textile Product Developer at Karl Mayer, “silver-plated polyamide can be processed very easily on multibar raschel machines.” Her aim in the next few stages is to optimise the sequences on the machine to suit mass production. This textile engineer studied the processing of functional yarns in her master’s degree. As well as Elitex, she also achieved good results with the warp knitting of other fine, insulating metal filaments and metallised yarns, e.g. Shieldex® and Agsis™.

Of course, the flexibility and diameter of the conductive yarns must generally be harmonised to suit the machine gauge and the characteristics of the base fabric.

Let’s grow together.

Hexcel Exhibits At Aero India 2019

STAMFORD, Conn. — January 29, 2019 — Hexcel is exhibiting at the Aero India show for the sixth time, continuing to support customers in the Indian subcontinent and throughout Asia. This year’s show takes place in Bangalore from February 20-24 (Stand AB2.5D, Hall AB) to promote a range of carbon fibers and composites that are benefiting Indian aerospace manufacturers for commercial aircraft, helicopters and space programs.

To coincide with the show, Hexcel is announcing the opening of its new sales office, Hexcel Composites India LLP. The office is located in Bangalore and will be fully operational in March 2019. Vijay Sharma, Sales Manager, and Ram Kumar, Technical Representative, will manage the sales activities and support key customers in the region.

Hexcel has supplied carbon and glass fiber fabrics, prepregs, honeycombs and adhesives to Indian aerospace companies for more than 28 years, including Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), National Aerospace Lab (NAL), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and TATA Advanced Materials.

Hexcel’s high strength and intermediate modulus carbon fiber range has been augmented by the launch of HexTow® HM63, a high modulus carbon fiber that has the highest tensile strength of any existing HM fiber. HexTow HM63 provides outstanding translation of fiber properties in a composite, including superior inter-laminar shear and compression shear strength. HexTow HM63 is therefore ideal for any high stiffness and strength-critical applications including space, satellites, UAV, commercial aerospace and helicopters.

Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM) is a composite manufacturing process that allows high quality components to be produced with good surface quality and without using autoclaves. Hexcel has recently launched HexFlow RTM6-2 to provide the industry with a bi-component version of its highly successful RTM6 resin, making it easier to transport by air or sea outside Europe. With the same chemical composition as RTM6, HexFlow RTM6-2 provides the same high mechanical properties from a short cure cycle, including high Tg. An added advantage is that HexFlow RTM6-2 can be stored at +5°C for 12 months.

Hexcel will also promote HexPly M56 out-of-autoclave (OOA) prepreg for aircraft secondary structures.Unlike traditional aerospace prepregs that require an autoclave cure to achieve the required properties, HexPly M56 provides the same quality and performance from a simple oven cure under vacuum. This avoids capital investment in autoclave equipment and on-going processing costs. The easy handling of HexPly® M56 for hand lay-up and ATL applications is also a benefit, along with the 30-day tack life at room temperature.

HexPly M56 is available with woven carbon, UD carbon tape, woven glass and Metallic mesh reinforcements and is suitable for hand lay-up, Automated Tape Laying (ATL) and Automated Fiber

Placement (AFP) processing. The standard cure temperature is 180°C and an alternative 135°C cure cycle is possible, with potential for reduced tooling costs and composite repair applications.

Flylow Gear Unveils Stormproof/Breathable™ With Bolger & O’Hearn‘s OmniBloq™ Technology On Premier Men’s And Women’s Styles At 2019 Outdoor Retailer + Snow Show

FALL RIVER, Mass. — January 25, 2019 — Flylow Gear, the independent, homegrown and mountain-raised creators of outerwear and apparel, will debut a new generation in performance apparel at the 2019 Outdoor Retailer + Snow Show with the introduction of Stormproof/Breathable OmniBloq™ on four of their legendary best-selling winter designs.

Developed by Bolger & O’Hearn Specialty Chemicals Inc., OmniBloq represents a new standard in durable water repellence for outdoor gear.

Flylow is using Omnibloq in a selection of pieces that includes the Quantum Pro Jacket (men $420), Chemical Pant (men $360), Billie Coat (women $420) and Nina Pant (women $360).

Products will be on display at the Flylow booth 49073-UL, Jan. 30-Feb. 1, 2019, during Outdoor Retailer + Snow Show 2019 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colo.

Applied to fabric at the mill, OmniBloq delivers highly durable, stormproof water-repellence that does not compromise fabric hand, garment design, wearer comfort or breathability. An ideal DWR in even the harshest snow storms, rain and squalls, OmniBloq has been engineered to keep the water off and get the sweat out, without the bulk or stiffness of other DWR technologies.

“We’re stoked to be the first winter sport brand to use OmniBloq DWR, and we specifically chose to use it on pieces that are favorites of some the hardest skiing men and women on the mountain. Using a technology that enables a skier to be ‘Stormproof’ and enjoy any weather condition is right on the bullseye for Flylow,” said Dan Abrams, president of Flylow.

Developed in Bolger & O’Hearn’s North American labs and introduced to global markets at Winter Outdoor Retailer 2018, many fabrics treated with OmniBloq easily meet or surpass AATCC Rain Test 35-2013. In fact, fabrics treated with this high powered DWR resist wetting out at least 3X longer than similarly treated DWR fabrics. For example, single-ply, woven synthetic fabrics finished with OmniBloq can resist wetting out in heavy rainstorm conditions from three to 20 times longer than the same fabrics treated with a traditional DWR.

“OmniBloq is a real breakthrough in the Stormproof/Breathable fabric category,” said Shaun O’Hearn, president of Bolger & O’Hearn.  “There is nothing like it on the market. Raising performance standards and reducing your environmental impact does not usually go hand-in-hand but OmniBloq delivers on both fronts.”

Other global performance brands and the US military have already begun adopting OmniBloq as the DWR of choice for their next-generation product launches. In addition to being stormproof yet highly breathable, OmniBloq-finished fabrics are recyclable, non-PFOA and provide protection against oil and stains.

The Armani Group and SL Green Announce New Madison Avenue Project

MILAN — January 25, 2019 — The Armani Group and SL Green, New York’s largest commercial property owner, announced plans to redevelop the Giorgio Armani boutique at 760 Madison Avenue in New York City. The fully reimagined 97,000-square-foot building will be home to a new flagship Giorgio Armani retail boutique and 19 luxury residences designed by Giorgio Armani. Giorgio Armani will conceive the residential interiors and the designer intends to take up residence within the building upon its completion. Renowned New York architecture firm COOKFOX will serve as architect on the project and redesign the new building to reflect the evolution of the Armani brand which has become a perfect complement to the Upper East Side.

The same philosophy and love for the essential, a hallmark of Armani’s style, are found in the interior design that translates the ideas of comfort and functionality into elegance. This sensitivity, teamed with awareness of the cultural factor, is what enhances the close ties this project will have with its surroundings. Iconographic elements of places and cultures, the appeal of new materials and unusual chromatic ranges have become the key style inspirations for individual interior design projects since 2004, when Giorgio Armani signed a partnership for the first Armani Hotel inside the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. This initiative was then repeated in other cities, from Miami to Istanbul, from Mumbai to Manila, from Tel Aviv to Beijing and London and now New York.

The proposed project is designed to be in harmony with Madison Avenue’s world-famous streetscape while reflecting the history of the district. The building’s natural stone materials, including brick and limestone, will contribute to and balance the existing neighborhood. The new building will include a series of setbacks and outdoor terraces that break up the massing, create definition from the street and provide a visual connection to Central Park.

“New York is one of the world’s major fashion capitals, and Madison Avenue is by definition an iconic luxury location. In the 1980s, when I opened my first Giorgio Armani boutique in Manhattan, I chose this exclusive and refined area because it was perfect for the timeless elegance and attention to detail I wanted to communicate. Today, thirty years later, I still believe this place reflects my philosophy and my aesthetic vision. With this special project, I continue the journey I began over ten years ago with my Armani/Casa Interior Design Studio, through which I look for innovative creative solutions that express my personal concept of luxury and refinement, while respecting the local culture and spirit,” said Giorgio Armani.

SL Green Realty Corp., which took control of the building in 2012, will lead the development in collaboration with Armani. “The Armani brand is synonymous with Madison Avenue and we are thrilled to partner with Armani to solidify its lasting presence along one of the world’s most recognized retail corridors while also introducing the timeless Armani lifestyle to the residences above,” said SL Green CEO Marc Holliday. “Armani’s commitment to Madison Avenue and New York City is unwavering and the brand’s leadership will preserve all that we, as New Yorkers, love about the Upper East Side of Manhattan.”

“This special project is an opportunity to design a modern home for the next generation of Armani’s presence on Madison Avenue,” said Rick Cook, principal at COOKFOX. “Our approach is to reinterpret the design sensibility of classic Madison Avenue building, like The Carlton House at 21 East 61st Street and 45 East 66th Street, to create a contemporary and iconic residence and retail building for both the Upper East Side Historic District and the Armani brand.”

The team also includes New York’s premier historic preservation consultants, Higgins, Quasebarth and Partners, and zoning consultants, Greenberg Traurig LLP,to help ensure that each aspect of the building design will be appropriate for the Upper East Side Historic District. The plan will require approval of the Landmark Preservation Commission. Construction is expected to begin in 2020 and be complete in 2023.

UniFirst Achieves Additional Hygienically Clean Certifications

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — January 25, 2019 — Three more UniFirst laundries earned the Hygienically Clean Food Safety certification during the final quarter of 2018. UniFirst Corp. now has more than 40 facilities that have reached this milestone. UniFirst facilities recently certified include: Taylor, Mich., Albany, N.Y. and Sumter, S.C. Its Charlotte, N.C., location also qualified for renewal of its Food Safety certification for another three years.

These achievements reflects UniFirst’s commitment to best-management practices (BMPs) in laundering as verified by third-party on-site inspection and their capability to produce hygienically clean textiles as quantified by ongoing microbial testing. The certification confirms a laundry’s dedication to compliance and processing garments and other textile products using BMPs as described in its quality-assurance documentation, the focal point for TRSA inspectors’ evaluation of critical control points that minimize risk.

This process eliminates subjectivity by focusing on outcomes and results that verify textiles cleaned in these facilities meet appropriate hygienically clean standards and BMPs for servicing animal processing, dairies, fruit/vegetable, bakeries, grain, and other food-and-beverage industry segments.

States with Hygienically Clean Food Safety certified UniFirst laundries (one each except where noted) now include Calif. (three); Colo.; Conn.; Fla. (four); Ga. (two); Mass.; Md. (two); Maine; Mich., N.C. (five); N.H. (two); N.J.; Nev.; N.Y. (two); Ohio; Okla; Pa.; S.C. (two); Texas (five); Utah; Va.; Wash.; and Wis. Canadian provinces represented are Alberta (two) and British Columbia.

“More and more, we’re seeing our customers in food-related industries looking for third-party validation that our specialized Product Protection Process and our Hygienically Clean standards are consistent with HACCP and GFSI guidelines,” said Adam Soreff, director of marketing and communications at UniFirst Corp., Wilmington, Mass. “Working with a Hygienically Clean Food Safety certified laundry helps reassure them that their managed uniform program is working in concert with their own food-safety protocols to help them ensure food safety for consumers.”

The Hygienically Clean Food Safety protocol examines a laundry’s Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) practices, including its techniques for:

  • Conducting hazard analysis;
  • Determining CCPs, monitoring their control, correcting them if not under control;
  • Validating and verifying HACCP system effectiveness; and
  • Documenting and recordkeeping to show ongoing conformance.

Inspection and reinspection verify laundry practices including washing procedures (detergent formulas, temperature, disinfectant, pH, extraction), drying, garment inspection and transportation. Each certified laundry plant’s operational flowchart is evaluated, ensuring these procedures (as well as pickup, unloading and sorting of soiled items and sorting of clean laundry) are mapped. Employees’ use of personal protective equipment is documented.

Inspectors also evaluate practices relevant to handling and processing textile products used in food manufacturing/processing establishments for adherence to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) directives.

Oerlikon Manmade Fibers Segment Becomes ADAMOS Network Partner

REMSCHEID, Germany — January 25, 2019 — The Oerlikon Manmade Fibers segment has been a member of ADAMOS, an alliance of machine and systems construction sector companies, since the beginning of 2019. With this move, the company is ramping up its digital strategy, creating the right framework for implementing its concrete Industrie 4.0 solutions.

Membership in the ADAMOS partner network is a further step on the company’s journey to becoming a digital solutions provider: ADAMOS was established as a strategic alliance for the future issues of ‘Industrie 4.0’ and ‘Industrial Internet of Things’ (IIoT) for market leaders in the machine and systems construction sector. The bundled know-how from machine construction, production and information technology is designed to help the Oerlikon Manmade Fibers segment develop digital solutions with the support of the ADAMOS IIoT platform, promote new business models and establish a specific standard for the textiles industry.

On the path to becoming a digital yarn factory

Even at the ITMA Asia in the fall of last year, the Oerlikon segment with its Oerlikon Barmag and Oerlikon Neumag brands was able to convince customers with its digital products. AIM4DTY – Artificially Intelligent Manufacturing for DTY – for example, is a digital system that is trained by means of artificial intelligence so that it continually optimizes the running production process. Faults and deviations are identified more swiftly, enabling operators to initiate targeted troubleshooting measures.

At last year’s OpenStack Summit in Berlin, Germany, CEO Georg Stausberg presented a further digital Oerlikon Manmade Fibers innovation: with ‘Data Center in a Box’, the segment is offering its customers a new high-performance, flexible and above all secure IT infrastructure. The compact computing center works on the basis of the open OpenStack operating system, which enables virtual computing in a secure private cloud environment. “We are working on a whole range of digital solutions that will offer our customers very concrete added value”, commented Georg Stausberg.

Labmak Buys Second Tau 330 RSC After Brands Demand More Durst Quality Of Advanced Digital Printing And Production Technologies

BRIXEN, Italy— January 25, 2019 — Durst, manufacturer of advanced digital printing and production technologies, has announced that The Label Makers has invested in a second Tau 330 RSC single-pass label press after a spike in demand from converters and brand owners for Durst’s UV inkjet digital technology.

The Durst Tau 330 RSC production machines, which was installed in January, brings another leap in quality and a 60-percent uplift in production capacity for The Label Makers, known as Labmak, in Bradford, England, which successfully completed beta testing of the world’s first machine in late autumn.

“Yet again it’s unbelievable photographic quality,” said David Webster, Managing Director of Labmak, which has invested around 2.5 million pounds in Durst technology over the past six years. “We need flexibility, continuity and industrial scale production to meet our demanding customer requirements. The Durst Tau 330 RSC provides all this and more, printing at 78 linear meters/min (245ft./min).

“Customer requirements are changing constantly. In this market label delivery dates now typically get changed hourly, not even on a daily basis, so we have to have flexibility of printing on either machine or even transferring work from flexo. Durst Workflow software enables us to manipulate files press side, so jobs can be tweaked immediately without sending the file back to the studio, which could easily take up to 20 minutes. Any changes are now done in five minutes — it’s a major time-saver.”

Webster added: “The print quality is phenomenal. We do now have supermarket chains who are requesting the jobs be printed inkjet rather than flexo because of the vibrancy of the colors, the screen effect of the inks and the perfect print registration. This second Tau 330 RSC investment gives us the opportunity to take on more clients and better service our existing customers. Previously we were mainly using the Durst Tau presses for the personal care markets. Now, with new capabilities, we are producing everything from food labels through to high quality wines and spirits on the Durst Tau 330  RSC.”

Helmuth Munter, segment manager, Durst Label & Packaging Printing, said: “The Label Makers in the UK is a shining example of our ‘Configure Your Future’ theme and what can be achieved with Durst technology. The Tau RSC can handle a huge range of substrates for a broad range of application options.
