Ahlstrom Debuts TenderGuard™ SMS Surgical Gown Fabric

Ahlstrom Corp. — a Finland-based manufacturer of high-performance fiber-based materials — has
introduced Ahlstrom TenderGuard™, a high-performance, soft spunbond-meltblown-spunbond (SMS)
nonwoven fabric suitable for use in medical apparel such as surgical gowns and drapes.

According to Ahlstrom, the fabric offers the same level of protection as that offered by a
traditional SMS fabric, but with improved comfort including drapeability; lighter weight; and a
silky, smooth hand. The fabric’s softness and comfort is comparable to that offered by a
traditional spunlace fabric, Ahlstrom reports, but it also offers improved protection — including
durability, low lint, and high repellency against low-surface-tension liquids such as blood, body
fluids and alcohol — at lower costs.

Ahlstrom TenderGuard™ is available in weights ranging from 35 grams per square meter (gsm) to
50 gsm, and complies with Association of the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) PB70 and
European Norm (EN) 13795 standards for protective gowns and drapes used in healthcare facilities.
