On April 16, Cotton Incorporated encourages you to wear cotton pajamas to work as part of National Wear Pajamas to Work Day. Among the benefits of cotton:

  • Cotton is natural. Cotton is a plant grown from the earth. It starts as a flower and matures into a boll with a fluffy interior, which is spun into the soft fabric we know and love.
  • Cotton breathes. Cotton is soft, absorbent and breathable. Clothing labels containing at least 60% cotton are considered “cotton-rich” and are less likely to be itchy, irritating, stiff or clingy. Cotton breathes better than oil-based synthetic fabrics like polyester, so it keeps you cool and comfortable.[1]
  • Cotton clothes last longer. Cotton keeps its shape. There is such a thing as too much stretch. The more spandex you add to a garment, the higher your chances of sagging, bagging and stretching out. Keep your clothes from getting bent out of shape by looking for less than 5% spandex on the label.
  • Cotton is easy to maintain. Cotton is easier to wash and care for than other fabrics, so let your washing machine do your dirty work and enjoy the money you’ll save on dry cleaning.

To be sure, check for the Seal of Cotton and for cotton content. Apparel should have at least 60% cotton, jeans should have 90% and sheets and towels should be 100% cotton to reap the benefits.

3M Will Feature Sustainable Textiles At Functional Fabric Fair Portland—Powered By Performance Days

The latest variation of this product, 3M Thinsulate Flowable Featherless Insulation, is a lightweight, high-loft synthetic insulation ideal for use in puffy garments as a down alternative. Comprised of at least 80% recycled content, it is specially designed to be flowable for easy application to apparel using a variety of filling machines and easily shaped to fill garments’ unique quilting channels. It also offers a high wash durability, meaning it can maintain its thermal performance even after laundering.

3M Thinsulate Xerogel Insulation fuses 60-percent post-consumer recycled material with xerogel, an ultralight solid that’s notable for its ability to retain warmth even when compressed. Designed primarily for boots and gloves, it is proven to be 20 times more breathable and almost twice as warm as legacy 3M Thinsulate Insulation products designed for footwear. The product also offers ease of application at the mill level due to its low dusting, flexibility, and minimal breakage.

Billerud Appoints Kevin Kuznicki As The New President For Billerud North America

Trelleborg Receives Patent For Dartex Zoned Coatings

TRELLEBORG, Sweden — March 27, 2023 — The Trelleborg Engineered Coated Fabrics manufacturing facility in Nottingham, England, has received a patent for its Dartex Zoned Coatings®.

Dartex Zoned Coatings uniquely offer the ability to “zone” different polyurethane coatings on support surface covers used in healthcare and medical applications, allowing a single fabric to perform multiple functions. Inventors of patent number US 11,499,265 B2 are Richard Haxby, technical director and Ilias Alexandrakis, senior development project manager.

Haxby said: “Trelleborg has a long history of developing intellectual property and understands the value of investing in research to help drive innovation in its chosen industries, including healthcare and medical. Dartex Zoned Coatings technology is revolutionary, making it possible for medical device manufacturers to develop the ultimate support surfaces.”

Alexandrakis, added: “This is an exciting advancement for the industry. It will mean that medical device manufacturers can streamline their production processes, potentially saving money and bringing products to market more quickly.”

Using patent-pending manufacturing methods, Dartex Zoned Coatings allows zoning of a support surface cover so that a single cover can have multiple physical and stretch properties across different zones without joins, welds or seams. They incorporate trusted Dartex polyurethane coating technology from Trelleborg for patient comfort and quality.

The coatings are suitable for multiple healthcare and medical applications, including mattress covers (tops and encasements), moving and handling, positioning devices, specialist medical furniture, theatre tables, trollies and stretchers. Mattress covers can be zoned in harmony with the mattress core.

As customers and legislators demand more credible information about product impacts and Avery Dennison seeks more accurate ways to measure improvements within its processing and sourcing decisions, the Carbon Trust footprinting tool includes the use of verified primary data from Avery Dennison’s operations to more accurately measure the impact of current and future label products.

ITMA 2023 Exhibitor Preview: Mayer & Cie.

ALBSTADT, Germany — March 27, 2023 — When ITMA opens in Milan on 8 June 2023, the textile machinery manufacturer Mayer & Cie. will be there for the first time with both of its business units: circular knitting machines and braiding machines. Along with the circular knitting machines Mayer & Cie. is exhibiting a braiding machine at its stand E101 in Hall 2. The company focuses on similar features in both areas: sound machines fitted out with solutions that make braiders and circular knitting machines more efficient, longer-lasting and thereby more valuable. The solutions range from upgrade kits for individual machines and innovations to reduce waste to digital solutions that improve the customer experience.

A tried and trusted choice: circular knitting machines from Mayer & Cie.

Mayer & Cie. will be exhibiting three circular knitting machines at ITMA: the revised OVJA 2.4 EM and Relanit 3.2 HS and the new three-thread fleece SF4 3.2 III. All three serve classical uses and, except for the new SF4-3.2 III, are established in the market.

The OVJA 2.4 EM knits double jacquard with electronic individual needle selection in the cylinder and double fabric with weft thread. It is currently the most productive machine in its class. Spacer fabric has now been added to its portfolio.

Machine number 2 is a byword for every knitter. For ITMA 2023 Mayer & Cie. has fitted out the existing Relanit 3.2 HS with improved yarn guides. It has a needle with an optimized hook and tongue shape and a pre-determined breaking point to improve safety at higher output. The new sinker is another feature of the Relanit 3.2 HS. It makes the machine run smoother and reduces wear and tear.  “Many knitting mills all over the world already swear by Relanit machines,” says Axel Brünner, head of product management at Mayer & Cie. “For them and new customers we are working on further improvements to our bestsellers.”

With the third machine on show Mayer & Cie. is addressing a major trend in the clothing industry. The SF4-3.2 III for three-thread fleece, especially for leisurewear, both in pure cotton and in blends, is in great demand. As Axel Brünner explains: “In this new machine we combine our tried and trusted MBF 3.2 and components of our MFC 3.2 that have proved advantageous in the Chinese market.”

Brisk braiding: Extra-speed machine for textile braid

The MR-15/18 C/Single Deck braider on show at ITMA is designed for textile braiding. It comes with the new capstan wheel pull-off that is especially suitable for smaller-diameter hoses with textile braiding. The SpeedBooster upgrade kit delivers more speed and up to ten per cent more output.

Smart upgrades for long, efficient machine life

Longer, faster and with even greater precision, upgrade kits enable customers to benefit from technical progress at Mayer & Cie. It is IIoT-based and the central location for all machine data that every customer can use to record and evaluate the performance of his machines. Noble Biomaterials’ Ionic+® Botanical Technology Receives EPA Registration

SCRANTON, Pa. — March 23, 2023 — Noble Biomaterials, a global supplier of antimicrobial solutions for soft surface applications, announced its latest antimicrobial technology has received official EPA registration.

Ionic+® Botanical uses a bio-based registered citric acid formula to inhibit the growth of microbes and reduce odor on fabric and other soft surfaces. Noble Biomaterials began development of the proprietary Ionic+® Botanical formula in 2021 and filed for EPA registration as part of the development process. Registering the citric acid-based active formula allows Noble’s licensed partners to claim antimicrobial benefits such as “odor control” and surface protection for various performance fabric applications.

Citric Acid is one of the most commonly used ingredients in food and beverage products, pharmaceutical and dietary products, and cleaning agents. The registration of Noble’s citric formula introduces this commonly used product into a whole new arena — the protection of textiles and other everyday manufactured materials.  Noble has seen the growing interest in plant-based solutions and recognizes that the Ionic+® Botanical technology can be an important step in meeting the demand for high performance, sustainable material preservation solutions.

Receiving an EPA registration is a big step in the process of advancing Noble’s Ionic+ Botanical products. Before manufacturers can sell products with antimicrobial actives in the United States, EPA must evaluate these products thoroughly to ensure that they meet federal safety standards to protect human health and the environment. EPA regulates antimicrobial actives by reviewing the toxicity of the ingredients and the potential for exposure. Approval of a product for registration is based on scientific assessment related to the identity, composition, potential adverse effects, and environmental fate of each EPA-registered product. After a lengthy review and the EPA determines that no adverse effects are expected to occur when the product is used according to the label directions, they grant product registration.

Over the past 5 years, Noble has seen increasing demand for Ionic+ and antimicrobial fabrics in active wear and health care. At the same time, the market has shifted to more sustainable fabric options requiring more wear with less care, or washings per use. Today, Ionic+ products are found in several categories, including athleisure, travel, home bedding and towels, and sports accessories. Noble is developing Ionic+ Botanical with select development partners, including Salomon — global leader in outdoor, and Trident — global leader in Home textiles. Ionic+ Botanical products will be widely available in 2024.
