First Ever Launch Of Atomic-6 Space Armor Takes Aim At Growing Threat Of Space Debris

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — October 21, 2026 — Atomic-6, a manufacturer of advanced composite materials, today announced the first-ever launch of its Space Armor® technology into orbit aboard Portal Space Systems’ Starburst-1 spacecraft, carried by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket as part of the Bandwagon-5 dedicated rideshare mission. The launch marks a significant milestone for Atomic-6, moving Space Armor® tiles from ground-based hypervelocity testing to its first operational deployment in space.

The composite shielding technology will help protect critical spacecraft systems against potentially catastrophic impacts from micrometeoroids and orbital debris (MMOD), addressing concerns related to the “Kessler Syndrome,” a cascading effect of space debris collisions that could make parts of Earth’s orbit unusable for satellites or space missions.

Atomic-6 - Trevor Smith

Built with a proprietary fiber-to-resin manufacturing method, Space Armor® tiles also create the first composite radome, a structural enclosure that protects communication equipment, that offers both communications transparency and impact resilience.

“We’ve proven Space Armor® tiles can withstand debris traveling at extraordinary speeds without generating harmful secondary fragments,” said Trevor Smith, CEO, Atomic-6. “Now, we’re putting that technology to work aboard Portal’s Starburst-1, taking an important step toward scaling its deployment and making space safer and more sustainable.”

Protecting a New Generation of Spacecraft

Space Armor® technology’s combination of impact resistance, reduced mass, and RF permeability offers spacecraft manufacturers a new approach to protecting high-value orbital assets, including satellites, communications systems, and future crewed platforms. Unlike traditional metallic Whipple shields, Space Armor® tiles are lighter, thinner and engineered to resist fragmentation upon impact, reducing the risk of generating additional hazardous debris in orbit.

In ground-based hypervelocity testing, Space Armor® composite tiles successfully stopped projectiles traveling faster than 7 kilometers per second, or approximately 16,000 miles per hour, while producing no harmful secondary debris. In comparative testing, conventional aluminum shielding generated a multitude of fragments, some larger than the original projectile.

Portal’s Starburst-1 installed Space Armor® tiles on its first free-flying spacecraft mission carrying live payloads. Designed for rapid maneuvering within an orbital regime , Starburst-1 will demonstrate capabilities that support rendezvous and proximity operations, rapid retasking, and significant orbital changes during its planned one-year primary mission.

“Protecting spacecraft from orbital debris matters to us and our customers, and we’re excited by Atomic-6’s approach to that challenge,” said Jeff Thornburg, co-founder and CEO of Portal Space Systems. “Space Armor has the potential to add valuable protection to spacecraft while not affecting or hindering the performance our missions demand. Seeing the first tile reach orbit is a milestone deserving of celebration, and we’re proud to have been the vehicle to get them there.”

Portal and Atomic-6 will use experience from integrating Space Armor® tiles onto Starburst-1 to validate installation procedures and develop best practices for incorporating the tiles into future spacecraft designs.

Italian Textile Machinery Orders In Q3 2026

acimit-logoMILAN— October 23, 2026 — Order intake for Italian textile machinery manufacturers increased by 7% in the third quarter of 2026, compared with the same period of 2025. Growth was driven by demand from international markets, where orders rose by 8%, while the domestic market remained weak, posting a 4% decline.

Compared with the previous quarter, overall order intake decreased by 4%, reflecting the uncertainty that continues to affect investment decisions across the global textile sector. The textile machinery orders index for the July-September period reached 44.6 points (base year 2021 = 100).

Italian manufacturers reported an average order backlog equivalent to 3.5 months of production, while capacity utilisation stood at 72.4%.

Sector-by-sector data show that order trends were generally stable or declining during the quarter, both in the domestic and export markets. Expectations for the final quarter of 2026 remain cautious, with most companies anticipating either stable or lower levels of order intake.

Marco Salvadè, President of ACIMIT, commented:

“Despite the widespread caution among manufacturers, fuelled by international uncertainty and rising energy costs, foreign markets continue to provide positive signals. This is particularly encouraging, as exports account for around 80% of the order intake of Italian textile machinery manufacturers.”

“The domestic market, however, remains subdued. The industry is looking for stronger investment momentum from Italian companies, supported by the incentives available under the Transition 5.0 scheme, which offers improved planning opportunities for industrial investments.”

Secretary Rollins And NASA Administrator Isaacman Sign MOU To Advance USDA Data Modernization Plan

WASHINGTON, D.C.— October 26, 2026 — U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Administrator Jared Isaacman signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and NASA that will strengthen USDA’s data quality and help ensure that American farmers and ranchers benefit from and have access to cutting-edge technologies.

Effective immediately, both Departments will work together to guide cooperation on integrating Earth observation, geospatial analytics, and statistical methodologies in support of agricultural statistics and aligned with USDA’s ongoing data and technology modernization efforts.

“American farmers are the best in the world and deserve any solution we can leverage, even when it is out of this world. I am proud to announce that USDA will now work with Administrator Isaacman and NASA to utilize the full power of technology, research, and development to fortify U.S. agriculture,” said Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins. “With this unprecedented partnership the Trump Administration is committing to a bright future of research and tech opportunities that will enhance USDA acreage and yield estimation and drive profitability for American agriculture.”

The partnership between the two Departments is long-standing, but new opportunities to improve crop performance for Earth and space-based goals were initiated in December 2025, when President Trump issued Executive Order 14369, “Ensuring American Space Superiority.” At that time, NASA and USDA began to explore creative new ways to improve American and global agriculture, observe the environment, and contribute to better human health.

“NASA develops some of the most advanced sensing, computing, and analytical capabilities in the world, and we should put those tools to work wherever they can deliver meaningful outcomes for the American people,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. “By combining NASA’s Earth observation data and technical expertise with USDA’s knowledge of American agriculture, we can improve the information available to farmers and ranchers, strengthen our understanding of crop conditions and natural hazards, and pursue new high-risk, high-reward ideas that advance both science and American competitiveness.”

The scope of cooperation under this MOU may include, but is not limited to, agricultural statistics, remote sensing science, modeling, geospatial data engineering, and super intelligence/machine learning (SI/ML) supported by the participants. As priorities evolve, additional areas of cooperation may be identified.

Areas of cooperation include:

  • Mission/Data Alignment: Regular technical exchanges to align USDA statistical requirements with NASA Earth science missions and data products (e.g., satellite observations, model outputs, and derived geophysical variables).
  • Data Access & Infrastructure: Discussions on scalable access patterns to NASA archives, cloud‑native geospatial formats, application programming interfaces (APIs), and workflow orchestration that enable USDA production operations.
  • Methodology & Validation: Joint technical reviews of algorithms for crop condition indicators, yield models, planted/harvested area estimation, and disaster impact assessment, including approaches to bias correction, uncertainty quantification, and validation using statistically sound frames and ground data.

This list is not intended to be exhaustive, and the participants intend to work together to investigate opportunities for collaboration under this MOU.

This effort supports the USDA Data Modernization Plan (PDF, 5.3 MB) launched by Secretary Rollins last month to put Farmers First, reduce unnecessary burdens on producers, and improve the timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of the agricultural data that inform decisions across American agriculture.

Renaissance Fiber Secures $2.24 Million To Scale Domestic Hemp Fiber Manufacturing

MOCKSVILLE, N.C. — October 20, 2026 — Renaissance Fiber has secured $2.239 million in combined financing to complete and operate its first commercial-scale hemp fiber processing facility in Mocksville, North Carolina.

The package includes $2 million in SBA-backed financing, a $100,000 low-interest loan from the Fibers Fund, and a $139,000 zero-interest recoverable loan from Invest Appalachia.

The financing moves Renaissance Fiber from years of research and development into commercial production. It provides capital for manufacturing infrastructure, raw material purchases, inventory, and the company’s transition to full-scale operations.

“Getting from a proven process to a working factory is one of the most challenging steps in advanced materials manufacturing,” said Daniel Yohannes, founder and CEO of Renaissance Fiber. “This financing gives us the infrastructure and working capital to process American-grown hemp at commercial scale, using the textile manufacturing base that already exists in North Carolina and across the US.”

Catalytic capital unlocks commercial financing

The Fibers Fund and Invest Appalachia announced their support for Renaissance Fiber in April 2026. Their early commitments helped the company obtain a larger SBA-backed financing package, demonstrating how flexible, first-in capital can unlock conventional financing for manufacturing companies operating in emerging markets.

The $2 million bank package comprises a $1.5 million term loan and $500,000 in revolving credit through the Small Business Administration’s 7(a) Manufacturers Access to Revolving Credit program (MARC), which was recently expanded.

“The Fibers Fund is delighted to support Renaissance Fiber with this new loan,” said Sarah Kelley, Managing Director of the Fibers Fund. “Over the course of our work with them, we’ve been continually impressed by their determination and commitment to community. Renaissance was facing a textbook example of the Commitment Catch-22 we identified when launching the Fibers Fund: buyers seek scaled production before committing to contracts, but textile businesses can’t scale production without capital. Renaissance has the technology, the farmer relationships, and the market interest, and they needed first-in capital that understood their sector and region. We’re proud to provide the catalytic capital to bridge that gap, and we’re especially proud to partner with Invest Appalachia, whose collaborative spirit and exceptional team have made this a truly integrated capital deal.”

“Renaissance Fiber is proving that the transition to a sustainable regional economy can be built on the strength of our own agricultural heritage,” said Andrew Crosson, CEO of Invest Appalachia. “While traditional commercial finance often overlooks the economic potential of domestic textiles, we recognize North Carolina’s rich textile history and see a team with the technical pedigree to bridge a critical gap in the U.S. hemp supply chain. By pairing our Catalytic Capital with Fibers Fund’s lending, we have helped unlock economic opportunity in a growing sector. We hope to see Renaissance Fiber’s sustainable innovation turn into a driver of job creation and long-term economic resilience, while ensuring that farmers in our region are the primary beneficiaries of the burgeoning industrial hemp industry.”

Building a missing link in the domestic textile supply chain

Renaissance Fiber manufactures softened hemp fiber through a proprietary two-step process: it degums raw hemp fiber, then refines it into a material suited for spinning on existing cotton and synthetic-fiber equipment. Historically, hemp fiber processing required specialized infrastructure with limited global capacity. Renaissance Fiber’s process removes that barrier, making hemp compatible with the equipment cotton and wool mills already use.

The company purchases raw fiber from U.S. growers and works with farmers, yarn spinners, textile mills, and product manufacturers. Its Mocksville facility will create a domestic processing link between agricultural production and established textile manufacturing capacity.

“America does not need to rebuild its textile industry from scratch,” Yohannes said. “The farmers, mills, technical expertise, and manufacturing equipment are already here. The missing link has been the infrastructure required to turn domestically grown hemp into a consistent, commercially viable textile input. That is the gap Renaissance Fiber is building to fill.”

Construction on the Mocksville facility is already underway and expected to be completed before the end of 2026, followed by commissioning and optimization.
