INDA Annual Report Benchmarks North American: Nonwoven Capacity, Production And Trade

CARY, NC, — June 29, 2016 — INDA, the Association of the Nonwovens Fabrics Industry, publishes the third edition of the annual North American Nonwovens Supply Report for its members. The report provides a view of North American supply, including the key metrics of capacity, production and operating rates, in addition to regional trade. The 51-page report offers 12 tables and 25 figures.

“This report is the benchmark for North American capacity, production, and supply information. It brings the clearest view available of the all-important supply/demand balance in the major nonwoven process categories. This is the only report we are aware of that publishes an industry operating rate; an essential element for our members’ strategic planning and business decisions,” said Dave Rousse, INDA President.

The report — and the INDA Quarterly Market Pulse and monthly Price Trends Summary — are provided to the 360-plus INDA member companies and associates as part of their membership.

New findings include:

  • From 1990 to 2015, North American nonwovens capacity has increased an average of 5.4 percent per year, outpacing U.S. real GDP, which grew at 2.4 percent per year over the same period. During this time the industry has more than quadrupled in size, adding over two million tonnes.
  • In 2015, North America’s nonwoven capacity increased to 2.98 million tonnes, (2.7 percent annual growth compared to the previous year’s growth of 1.2 percent). Suppressed investments due to the Great Recession, (2007 through 2009), subdued capacity growth through the end of 2014, producing a minimal additional 110,000 tonnes in North America, at an annual increase of 1.3 percent. “It appears accelerated growth in North American nonwoven capacity investments will continue through the next few years,” said Brad Kalil, Director of Market Research and Statistics, INDA.
  • Imports and exports are an important consideration in supply. North America receives imports (294,000 tonnes) comparable to ten percent of the region’s capacity; while exporting 163,000 tonnes. Contrary to industry assumptions, imports from overseas into North America are not substantial, accounting for — on a net/net basis — just 4 percent of the regions nonwoven capacity.

“It is INDA’s objective to continue to provide and improve the quality of data and industry information. I continue to be pleased with the increasing participation of nonwoven producers completing the survey and our ability to identify new or previously unreported nonwovens capacity,” said Kalil.

Lectra Unveils Lectra Fashion PLM V5

PARIS — June 28, 2016 — Lectra is pleased to announce the launch of Lectra Fashion PLM V5, the newest version of its product lifecycle management solution. This new release boosts overall production efficiency by extending its process coverage to pre-production stages.

Tailor-made for brands and retailers, the innovative solution was developed with the ambition of addressing the market-specific challenges of today. “We are now living in a digital world, more so in fashion than other sectors and Lectra aims to keep its customers ahead of the evolving industry. To help them deliver profitable, on-trend collections within increasingly tight time constraints, we need to go one step further by accompanying them in their pre-production processes with both our technology and industry expertise. Clearing potential roadblocks right from the start ensures efficiency in the later production stages,” explains Céline Choussy Bedouet, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, Lectra.

The extended process coverage will provide greater visibility over fabric and product cost management processes and guide companies towards making the right calls prior to production. This helps companies optimize profitability as the solution enables them to run multiple cost simulations concurrently via consolidated summary views. Additionally, this latest version will help reduce fabric waste in production, as companies will be able to estimate fabric consumption for future collections and simulate different purchase-order scenarios earlier on.

In addition, given the increasingly nomadic nature of its users, Lectra Fashion PLM V5 is equipping companies with a brand new series of mobile applications to accelerate day-to-day decision-making. By being able to share and view mobile versions of their works-in-progress, brands and retailers can make on-the-spot decisions on work priorities, their collection range, the size and fit of their products during off-site meetings.

Furthermore, while improving profit margins and production speed are top priorities, Lectra is not compromising on design quality. As the PLM V5 solution is integrated with Adobe® Creative Cloud, connected design teams can create top-quality sketches with Adobe® Creative Suite and make changes while working in their native environments. Lectra is also careful not to neglect the creative thought process by providing a mobile application for designers to take and share photos instantly with their team members. To facilitate the patternmaking process for customers, Lectra Fashion PLM has upgraded their previous solution by including newer, more sophisticated and substantial content libraries.

Last but not least, Lectra Fashion PLM V5 makes the user experience a smooth and fuss-free one. Featuring a more intuitive and visually appealing interface, users will have easy access to more detailed information such as product specifications. “Lectra continuously strives to push past the frontiers of fashion technology to better serve this industry. We aim to accompany our customers every step of the way, right from the very first creative spark to the final production stages. With 40 years of fashion industry experience under our belts, our goal now is to keep innovating. Lectra Fashion PLM V5 is another sign of our commitment to this goal,” concludes Daniel Harari, Lectra CEO.

Responsive Retail: How Faster, Smarter Supply Chains Can Limit Discounts

Sponsored By Buhler Quality Yarns Corp.

JEFFERSON, Ga. — June 23, 2016 — In a perfect world, apparel stores would predict consumer demand with prophetic accuracy, order the exact inventory needed months in advance, and sell every item at full price, leaving customers delighted — and stocks depleted.

Of course, as retailers and brands well know, the world isn’t perfect. The whims of fashion change faster than the seasons, as customers chase hot new items and neglect yesterday’s trends. For many brands, their supply chains aren’t equipped to keep pace.

How Brands Get Stuck With Discounts And Stockouts

As products linger on the racks, companies slash prices to make them more compelling. In fact, the industry’s reliance on discounts has largely trained consumers to expect prices to drop, sending them straight to the sale section while sneering at full price items.

On the flip side, brands lucky enough to hit on a trending style may face frustrating stockouts — and leave disappointed customers looking elsewhere for a similar style. By the time their supply chain can replenish the hot item, fashion may have sprinted forward — forcing retailors to turn back to discounts to move last cycle’s winning inventory.

If you’re a brand or retailer, you understand the risks. Colors, designs, and weather-appropriate apparel fall in and out of fashion in a matter of weeks—order too much, and your investment rots; too little, and you leave easy money on the table.

Supply Chain Solutions To Faster Fashion

The perfect solution to an imperfect world? Faster, smaller orders — and more of them. Why take the shotgun approach to your inventory when you could place well-timed, precise surgical strikes?

If you had the ability to restock in weeks instead of months, you could order everything in small amounts, see what’s selling, and respond to demand as you go, offering exactly what your consumers want at full price.

For many brands and retailers, a fast fashion model still feels like a pipe dream. With a traditional Asia-based supply chain, you’re looking at a 10-25 week waiting period on re-orders. By focusing on relationships, strategy, and location, you may be able to cut your speed-to-market lead time down to 14-28 days.

Relationships: Communicate with Your Entire Supply Chain

Too often, we’ll see brands depend solely on their garment manufacturer, wary of making contact with the rest of the supply chain. “We only buy fabric,” they say, “why would we get involved with the yarn?” The answer, of course, is that you need the yarn to make the fabric.

If you only work through the fabric manufacturers, you’re relying on them for all sourcing decisions. Need a fast order? If you can’t get right yarn quickly enough, you’ll have to change suppliers, which changes the fabric—giving your customers an inconsistent experience and risking lost loyalty. Successful, fast fashion brands establish lines of communications with everyone along the supply chain, from yarn spinners and knitters to the partners who cut, sew, trim, and dye.

By opening up a dialogue with everyone involved, you can give them forewarning about rapid new orders, securing production and quality without sacrificing speed. This communication is especially critical when you’re working with specialty fabrics, like Supima Cotton®, MicroModal®, and Micro TENCEL®.

Strategy: Pre-Position Yarn & Fabric

Here’s where small and medium brands have a distinct advantage in the world of fast fashion. If you only use a handful of yarns or fabrics, you can reliably predict that you’ll use a certain amount of each—even if you don’t know what the final product will be yet.

Work with your supply chain to pre-position your most widely used fabrics and yarn; by investing ahead of time, you’ll have the raw materials on hand and dramatically reduce your speed to market.

Just be sure not to pre-position colored fabric, as color tends to be the most unpredictable element of fashion—and the easiest to adapt to with un-dyed materials.

Location: React Faster with American-Made Products

Sourcing from American companies doesn’t just ensure a higher quality product—it’s also dramatically faster to receive shipments. If you’re still tethered to an overseas supply chain, you’ll have to pay up for air freights or deal with ships that take several weeks. American producers also eliminate the language barriers, making it easier to clearly communicate your requirements.

Here again, smaller brands have an advantage. While bigger companies are tied to Asian suppliers with equity partnerships and investments, more agile brands are free to source in the US and reap the benefits: speed, quality, and communication.

The Result: Affordable Fast Fashion

With these strategies in place, brands can enjoy significantly faster speed-to-market times of mere weeks. With a strong, smart, and nimble supply chain, you’re free to make smaller, faster orders to capitalize on the latest trends while curbing discounts and stockouts.

It’s not just a winning business strategy; it’s a path to greater peace of mind. By relying on your entire supply chain to guarantee rapid production, you can stop and start as the market demands without worrying about excess waste—and offer your consumers the products they want today.

Kiian Digital’s Digistar Hi-Pro Series Awarded Nike’s RSL Certification

COMO, Italy — June 27, 2016 — Kiian Digital’s Digistar HI-PRO series was recently awarded Nike’s Restricted Substance Lists (RSL) Certification. Marco Girola, Marketing Specialist, Kiian Digital, shares his thoughts on what this achievement means for Kiian Digital, its customers and how this reflects a current trend for the textile industry to be more environmentally conscious.

What does it mean to be on the Nike’s RSL for Kiian Digital? What particular substances needed to be restricted to be awarded RSL?

As the world’s largest manufacturer of athletic footwear and apparel, producing over 900,000 products a year, Nike aims to eliminate hazardous chemicals throughout its production chain. Its RSL requires that every Nike-branded product, adheres to its sustainability commitment. This demands that its suppliers evaluate their chemical impact and incorporate less polluted manufacturing processes that comply with a comprehensive list of chemical standards. In terms of sublimation inks, these are subject to annual tests to ascertain the absence of a number of chemicals including, organotins, PVC and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

For us, being Nike RSL accredited is a great commendation to our continued commitment to a sustainable business approach, not only for us as an ink manufacturer, but also in providing solutions that allow our customers to offer more environmentally acceptable products. With our advanced portfolio, which comprises of water-based inks that allow for increased productivity while reducing waste, and our expansive chain of regional dealers; we embrace a business model of printing locally thereby, potentially eliminating the need for global shipping and further reducing our carbon footprint.

We also ensure that all of our ranges exclude or reduce hazardous chemicals. As demonstrated by this recent Nike certification, our approach not only provides a fantastic range of benefits to the printing companies and the end user; it also opens the door to us integrating our eco-friendly inks within Nike’s extensive supply chain through its existing print suppliers.

Are Nike’s RSL Certification requirements typical of brands in the textile industry? Does this process reflect a current trend to be more environmentally conscious?

Yes, brands today are very conscious of the impact their supply chains have on the environment. This increased sense of responsibility comes from the companies directly but also from consumer pressure, as the public has become much more aware of the way the products they buy are made and sourced.

It is also the manufacturers’ responsibility to offer sustainable solutions. This has been Kiian Digital’s policy for many years as a brand that cares about its own carbon footprint, as well as having a product range that can provide added benefits to its customers.

What are the features of the Digistar HI-PRO series that made it suitable to put forward for this certification?

The product series we put forward for the Nike certification needed to not only meet all of their environmental criteria, but also provide the quality necessary to meet Nike’s exacting standards.

Thanks to its vast gamut of striking colour, the Digistar HI-PRO series is a great sublimation solution in the production of supreme-quality high-fashion apparel, endurance sportswear, equipment, producing. In terms of textile applications, the Digistar HI-PRO range offers supreme image quality and is quick-drying, perfect in the production of final applications, including sportswear.

Following our recent Nike RSL accreditation, the Digistar HI-PRO series arms customers with the ability to perfect designs early, as these approved products do not require additional testing. This not only directly decreasing their developmental cost, it also significantly accelerates the products’ time-to-market and allows more goods to be produced in a shorter turnaround time.

Sold in around 90 countries worldwide, the Digistar HI-PRO range is our bestselling product offering a host of benefits to printing companies and end-users including its complete compatibility with the full portfolio of Epson printheads – the most widely used on the market.

Specifically designed for synthetic fabrics and uncoated and coated rigid substrates, the Digistar HI-PRO series provides high colour concentration particularly on coated and uncoated paper. Customers printing on uncoated paper, can enjoy long-lasting vivid brightness of the inks while print manufacturers of coated paper can utilise reduced ink consumption compared to competing inks. This allows the cartridge to span a higher number of print runs resulting in greater workflow and cost efficiencies. Available in 1, 2.5 and 5 litre bottles, we supply inks for small to large jobs.

Offering rapid system set-up, less downtime and increased quality, our inks provide our customers with lower production costs and increased margins. This generates sustainable value for businesses that are looking to invest in digital production.

What opportunities does this certification provide to your customers?

Nike’s RSL criteria advises that once a supplier’s product is certified this product can be used throughout all Nike-branded product.

In regards to applications that can be produced using the Digistar HI-PRO range this is virtually endless, whether it be a t-shirt, a pair of trainers as long as the material consists of a minimum of 70% polyester.

This opens up some fantastic new business opportunities for our customers. It should also give them a further USP when talking to other brands and end-users about the inks they use and how they meet the stringent environmental criteria for one of the world’s most high-profile brands.

Why should existing Nike suppliers purchase the Digistar HI-PRO range?

With our advanced R&D department, we are continually working with our customers to find the best printing solution that meets their requirements or adapting our inks to comply with certain accreditations.

Existing Nike suppliers can have the confidence that our Digistar HI-PRO range fully complies with Nike’s rigorous RSL and as such, we can guarantee that all the prints conform with the company’s RSL requirements and will not require additional testing further-down the production line. This ensures that Nike printing suppliers can enjoy greater cost efficiencies and increased turnaround times.

What’s next for Kiian Digital? Do you plan to certify any additional inks to comply with Nike’s RSL?

As one of the leading digital inks manufacturers, our vast portfolio has a host of accreditations. These include the Digistar HI-PRO series as well as many of our other ink series being certified including securing the Adidas A-01, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Clear to Wear and Safe to Wear authorisations.

Working together with companies such as Nike, we are continually looking at how to enhance our inks and ensure that they meet companies’ specific criteria, as well as the wider market demands. As such, if we believe the market has a demand for a particular ink series we will of course consider licencing these with the relevant certification.
