Governor McCrory Announces Textile Industry Innovator Will Bring 610 Jobs To Rutherford County, N.C.

RALEIGH, N.C. — December 6, 2016 — Governor Pat McCrory, North Carolina Commerce Secretary John E. Skvarla, III, and the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina (EDPNC) announced today that Everest Textile USA will establish a 610-job manufacturing facility in Rutherford County. The Taiwan-based maker of high-performance sports apparel will invest $18.5 million over five years at a site in Forest City.

“North Carolina’s outstanding business climate offers great advantages to global manufacturers such as Everest Textiles,” said Governor McCrory. “We are thrilled that this innovation-based textile company has selected our state and its tradition of high-quality manufacturing to build its presence in the Americas.”

Since Governor McCrory entered office in January of 2013, North Carolina’s economy has generated more than 300,000 jobs.

Everest Textiles USA is a unit of Everest Textile Co., Ltd., headquartered in Tainan City, Taiwan. Founded in 1988, the publicly-held parent company (TWSE: 1460) is a vertically integrated developer and supplier of innovative products to leading brands in sports, casual and other apparel. Its buyers include names such as Nike, Columbia and Patagonia. Everest currently has factories in Taiwan, China and Thailand. Its Rutherford County plant will be its first outside Asia.

“North Carolina’s outstanding workforce, moderate cost-structure and engaged community colleges put us on the short list for 21st century manufacturers of every kind,” said Secretary Skvarla. “We have all the ingredients global companies need to succeed.”

The company plans to employ operators, supervisors and an administrative team. Once fully operational, the facility will add nearly $15.8 million annual payroll impact to the local economy.

“Everest positions itself as one of the leading global enterprises and commits to contribute to human society by providing innovative, environmentally friendly and comfortable textile products to the industry and consumers,” said Scott Chen, corporate vice president. “There is still a long way for us to go and your continuous support is essential. Trust we will all work together to make it happen.”

“As a native North Carolinian, it is exciting to see Everest Textile USA investing in the state and people of North Carolina, while also creating innovative products,” said Michael Chen, U.S. Legal Counsel to Everest Textile. “This project will be a tremendous opportunity for all parties involved.”

Everest’s arrival in Rutherford County will be facilitated, in part, by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) approved by the state’s Economic Investment Committee earlier today. Under the terms of the company’s JDIG, the company is eligible to receive just over $3 million in total reimbursements. Payments will occur in annual installments over 12 years pending verification by NC Commerce and NC Revenue that the company has met incremental job creation and investment targets. JDIGs reimburse new and expanding companies a portion of the newly created tax-base with the goal of increasing the overall tax benefit to the State of North Carolina. By law, JDIG projects must result in a net revenue inflow to the state treasury over the life of the award. This project is contingent upon local participation from the county or municipality.

“I welcome Everest Textiles USA to Rutherford County and look forward to this R&D-intensive manufacturer creating jobs and becoming a visible part of our business community,” said State Senator Ralph Hise.

“The selection of Rutherford County for Everest’s first production site outside of Asia is clear evidence that western North Carolina is competitive with any region in the world when it comes to manufacturing,” said State Representative David Rogers. “I congratulate this growing company on its terrific choice and look forward to supporting its success.”

In facilitating Everest Textile’s announcement, North Carolina Commerce and EDPNC worked with the North Carolina General Assembly, the North Carolina Community College System, NCWorks, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, Rutherford County, the Town of Forest City, the Rutherford County Economic Development Commission and North Carolina State University, and the North Carolina Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce.

Lenzing Invests In New TENCEL® Fiber Plant In The United States

LENZING, Austria — December 13, 2016 — The Lenzing Group aims to increase the share of specialty fibers as a percentage of revenue to 50 percent by 2020. Following the previously announced expansion plans for Lenzing, Heiligenkreuz (Austria) and Grimsby (Great Britain), the Supervisory Board of Lenzing AG approved yesterday the investment for a TENCEL® fiber plant in the United States. Lenzing now plans to construct a state-of-the-art plant with a production capacity of 90,000 tons per year at its site in Mobile, Ala. The new facility will be the largest TENCEL® fiber plant in the world, it will set a new milestone in the history of lyocell fibers. The investment volume will total $293 million (275 million euros). The new plant will utilize the latest technological standards and is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2019.

The Lenzing Group currently has a worldwide production capacity of 222,000 tons per year of Tencel fibers. The new plant in Mobile plus the already announced debottlenecking projects at the other Tencel fiber sites will increase the total Tencel fiber capacity by more than 50 percent by 2019. The decision to build this plant in the United States was supported by the good infrastructure at our Mobile site and attractive energy costs.

“This investment represents another major milestone in the implementation of our corporate strategy sCore TEN. It will bring us a big step further to reach our target of 50 percent revenue from specialty fibers by 2020,” explained Lenzing CEO Stefan Doboczky. “This expansion also underscores our commitment to all our Tencel fiber customers, who continue to make their products even more sustainable using Tencel fiber, the world’s most sustainable botanic fiber,” added Doboczky.

The disciplined implementation of the Lenzing’s expansion program is essential for driving the Lenzing Group’s organic growth agenda. Therefore it was decided to create a new Management Board role, pooling together the key technical, operational and engineering responsibilities. The Supervisory Board of the company appointed today Heiko Arnold as the new Chief Technology Officer. In addition to a strong scientific and technical education, Arnold has gained many years of experience with BASF in the realization of major investment projects and continuous operational improvements as well as extensive know-how in Research & Development. He will be responsible for all technical departments in the Lenzing Group.

“We are pleased to welcome Heiko Arnold, a further expert with broad international experience, to Lenzing’s Management Board team“, commented Hanno Bästlein, Chairman of the Lenzing Supervisory Board. “Lenzing is on a successful, dynamic growth course with the development and implementation of the new sCore TEN corporate strategy, and that makes an increase in the Management Board to four persons a reasonable step. His 15 years of experience in Asia, in the realization of major investment projects and in operational excellence make Arnold a perfect match for the challenges faced by Lenzing“, explained Bästlein.

Sustainable And Fair Designer Brand Studio JUX Named To Alvanon’s Mentorship Program

NEW YORK CITY — December 12, 2016 — Alvanon has named sustainable, high-fashion label Studio JUX to its prestigious Dr. Kenneth Wang Mentorship Program. The announcement was made by Alvanon’s CEO Janice Wang.

The Dr. Kenneth Wang Mentorship Program was established in September 2011 by Alvanon to mentor emerging brands and design talent. It awards the winner a two-year mentorship with Alvanon’s leading industry apparel experts to help pave a sustainable path to success. The program is named after Kenneth Wang, who founded Alvanon in 2001.

Under the program, Alvanon will strengthen Studio JUX’s existing business competence with statistical sizing data, technical design tools and training in key areas of the art and science of fashion, including production, supply chain issues, fit, marketing and sales.

Studio JUX was founded by Jitske Lundgren and Carlien Helmink in 2008 with the belief that fashion should be fun and enjoyable for everyone: for the designers, the people working in factories and customers wearing and using the product. The sustainable, high-fashion label for men and women offers an alternative to fast fashion, focused on maximizing social economic impact while its minimizing environmental footprint. With fair-trade principles at the forefront of JUX’s brand identity, each garment is finely crafted by Nepali tailors under fair labor conditions, monitored by the Fair Wear Foundation. With the slogan ‘MY NEPALI TAILOR IS A ROCKSTAR,’ the Handshake program allows customers to “meet” the makers of their garments via virtual profiles on the label’s website.

“Studio JUX is a perfect candidate for our mentoring program,” Wang says. “As an industry, we have to develop new business models and solutions that can solve the massive challenges we face. Sustainability – and responsible innovation – are already at the core of the very way they think, act and work. Profits from their thoughtful business plan will be invested in programs in those same communities where the factories are located.  These will provide skills training, personal development programs and apprenticeships that help get people into skilled work in the textile and garment industry.”

Lundgren notes that her business will benefit from Alvanon’s mentoring in several ways.

“Alvanon has an incredible wealth of knowledge, scientific data and experience,” she says, “and it’s not limited to design or production. Their expertise covers virtually every aspect of the business of fashion. As a social enterprise, it’s our mission to successfully run a sustainable ethical fashion and lifestyle brand. To us ‘success’ means growth for everyone involved in the value chain: our employees, key suppliers, customers, lenders and shareholders. It’s in our DNA and Alvanon’s mentoring will help us prove that growth and sustainability are not opposing ideas.”

Katinka van Beveren, Alvanon’s lead consultant, added: “We are so proud to have partnered with Studio JUX. As an industry, we need to develop new ways of thinking in order to lead the push towards a more sustainable economy. Studio JUX has the potential to be such an innovator, working proactively to address critical environmental, social and ethical challenges on a global scale.”

Studio JUX is manufactured in its own factory by women empowerment projects and social enterprises based in Kathmandu Nepal.  The Studio JUX collection is available in 16 countries at 80 outlets, in its retail store in Amsterdam and online at www.studiojux.com
