Imports Set To Hit New Monthly And Annual Records As Retail Sales Continue To Increase

WASHINGTON — August 9, 2017 — Boosted by continuing sales growth, August is expected to be the busiest month on record for imports at the nation’s major retail container ports and 2017 is on track to set a new annual high, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released today by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

“Retailers are selling more and that means they need to import more,” NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said. “With sales showing year-over-year increases almost every month for a long time now, retail supply chains are working hard to keep up. These latest numbers are a good sign of what retailers expect in terms of consumer demand over the next few months.”

Ports covered by Global Port Tracker handled 1.69 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units in June, the latest month for which after-the-fact numbers are available. That was down 2 percent from May but up 7.5 percent from June 2016. July was estimated at 1.72 million TEU, up 5.6 percent from the same time last year. One TEU is one 20-foot-long cargo container or its equivalent.

August is forecast at 1.75 million TEU, up 2.1 percent from last year. That would be the highest monthly volume recorded since NRF began tracking imports in 2000, topping the 1.73 million TEU seen in March 2015. The 1.7 million-plus numbers seen in May and July and now expected for August and October would represent four of the six busiest months in the report’s history.

September is forecast at 1.67 million TEU, up 4.7 percent from last year; October at 1.72 million TEU, up 3 percent; November at 1.62 million TEU, down 1.4 percent, and December at 1.59 million TEU, up 1.5 percent.

Those numbers would bring 2017 to a total of 19.7 million TEU, topping last year’s previous record of 18.8 million TEU by 4.9 percent. That compares with 2016’s 3.1 percent increase over 2015. While July numbers are not yet final, the first half of 2017 tentatively totaled 9.7 million TEU, up 7.4 percent from the same period in 2016.

The import numbers come as retail continues a long-term pattern of increased sales. Total retail sales have grown year-over-year every month since November 2009, and retail sales as calculated by NRF — excluding automobiles, gasoline stations and restaurants — have increased year-over-year in all but three months since the beginning of 2010. Retail employment, despite recent short-term fluctuations, has increased by 1.5 million jobs during the same period.

NRF has forecast that 2017 retail sales – excluding automobiles, gasoline and restaurants – will increase between 3.7 and 4.2 percent over 2016, driven by job and income growth coupled with low debt. Cargo volume does not correlate directly with sales because only the number of containers is counted, not the value of the cargo inside, but nonetheless provides a barometer of retailers’ expectations.

Hackett Associates Founder Ben Hackett noted that U.S. gross domestic product grew 2.6 percent in the second quarter of this year, more than double the 1.2 percent seen in the first quarter.

“This relatively strong growth underlies the robust level of imports we have forecast and witnessed,” Hackett said.

MagnaColours® Expands Technical Team With Two New Appointments

BARNSLEY, England — August 8, 2017 — MagnaColours®, a manufacturer of water-based inks, has appointed two new members of staff. Melvin Hall will be taking on the role of Print Technician, while Jason Chapman will be joining Magna in September, as Regional Technical Sales Manager for Asia. The new appointments will contribute to Magna’s ambition to be worldwide leaders in environmentally conscious textile printing.

Melvin has vast experience in setting up textile screen-printing departments, and has worked in countries including Sri Lanka, USA, Spain, India, China and Pakistan. He also boasts experience in training workers in many aspects of screen printing.

Having worked in the screen-printing industry since 1976, Melvin has been printing onto textiles and garments for over three decades, throughout which time he has worked with some of the biggest brands and manufacturers in UK and worldwide.

In another new addition to the MagnaColours team, Jason has had a successful career in senior management of international businesses and consulting services for global brands in the textile printing sector spanning almost three decades. Because of this, he is perfectly placed to help Magna to develop relationships with printers across Asia, while offering support and advice.

Jason has worked in Sri-Lanka, China, Turkey and many other Asian countries, with leading manufacturers and printers, introducing, supporting and encouraging the use of water-based print technologies as well as larger printing, factory design, equipment sourcing, site planning and training projects. Through working with various printers and retail clients, he has gained a wealth of experience which will serve him well with his work going forward with Magna.

Helen Parry, managing director, MagnaColours, said: “We are thrilled to have not one, but two incredibly talented and experienced individuals joining the Magna team. It’s been a very exciting year for Magna, with the launch of some industry-leading initiatives, so it’s great to add to the expertise that already exists throughout the business.”

“Jason and Melvin will both contribute greatly to doing what MagnaColours are passionate about, spreading the word about the capabilities and benefits of water-based inks, in the place of harmful variants. These appointments mark a significant step in strengthening our efforts to educate and support our customers and distributors in getting the best results possible from our products.”

Earlier this year, MagnaColours launched its own education program, MagnaAcademy, as part of its commitment to support and train screen-printers in working with water-based inks. By demonstrating the ease and quality of printing with their inks, Magna are challenging misconceptions that have been a barrier to printers adopting the use of water-based inks over harmful alternatives.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — August 8, 2017 — Mahaffey Fabric Structures, a provider of temporary turnkey structures and shelter solutions, today announced the acquisition of more than $24.2 million in assets from Classic Party Rentals — including tents, structure frames, fabric pieces, and specialty structures. With this purchase, Mahaffey — already a national player for prominent events — will have an expanded network of both personnel and products to cover large-scale activations, corporate events, festivals, sporting events, film productions and other special events nationwide.

“With the addition of more than 3.1 million square feet of tent and structure inventory, this acquisition will be an industry game-changer,” said George Smith, executive vice president, Mahaffey Fabric Structures. “It is a unique opportunity, not only to purchase high-end assets that rarely become available, but also to expand our coverage of the special events industry — both for rentals and sub-leasing. VDMA: Successful Textile Machinery Symposium In Colombia

FRANKFURT, Germany — August 8, 2017 — In July, seven VDMA member companies presented their technologies to the representatives of the Colombian textile industry. More than 100 Colombian textile manufacturers used the symposia in Bogotá and Medellín as an opportunity to gain first-hand information about German technology.

The VDMA member companies Trützschler, Groz-Beckert, AUTEFA Solutions Germany, Brückner Trockentechnik, Mahlo, Interspare and Saueressig participated in the business delegation trip organized by the German-Colombian Chamber of Commerce (AHK) and actively supported by the VDMA. All the companies could establish contacts with potential customers and representations and even partially conclude orders.

Furthermore, the visits to the two large multi-level textile manufacturers Artextil (design, textile printing, finishing) and FABRICATO (spinning, weaving preparation, weaving, finishing) provided insights on the state of the Colombian textile and apparel sector.

Currently, the Colombian textile industry employs 114,322 people, contributing 6.5 per cent to the gross domestic product of the country. In addition to the import surplus of almost $1.2 billion, the Colombian textile and apparel sector is struggling primarily against illegal imports from Asia, which are countered by the government. The import of textile raw materials should be reduced through local production with the goal to increase quality, productivity and ultimately also export. In 2016, the export ratio was a mere 15 per cent. The security situation in the country has improved in recent years.

Prime Medical’s Chlorine-Shielded Textiles Now Available To 44 Hospitals In Illucient Purchasing Alliance

LARGO, Fla. — August 7, 2017 — Prime Medical — a manufacturer of chlorine-shielded privacy curtains, apparel and bed linens for healthcare — announced today it has joined the Illucient Purchasing Alliance, and will now be available to the 44 member hospitals throughout North Carolina and South Carolina that utilize the aggregated purchasing power of the Illucient Portfolio for negotiated discounts for their facility’s supply chain needs.

Illucient is a collaboration between Coastal Carolinas Health Alliance and the Southern Atlantic Healthcare Alliance and has generated millions of dollars in annual savings for its hospital members since joining forces in 2015.

“Illucient is pleased to expand its portfolio with proven, next-generation healthcare products at a valuable price point for our members,” said Lindsay Maher, associate director of Operations. “We are excited to add Prime Medical’s line of chlorine-shielded privacy curtains, apparel and bed linens to our catalog so hospitals in our network can have access to innovative technologies that support a healthier, safer environment for patients, visitors and staff.”

The SAF-T™ product line is made with a patented fabric technology that binds chlorine molecules from each laundering in EPA-registered bleach. The retained chlorine on the fabric kills bacteria and viruses while the products are in use and the chlorine-shield is fully reactivated with each wash, as directed.

In today’s healthcare environment, the risk of acquiring an infection during a hospital stay has remained relatively constant despite the best practices of increased hand hygiene and improved cleaning and disinfection methods.

“While much effort and attention is placed on handwashing and cleaning the hard surfaces around the patient, what is often overlooked as a source of contamination are the fabrics that patients and staff are in direct contact with 24-7,” says Jim Sampey, Prime Medical CEO. “With our products, we’re able to transform the surface area of the privacy curtain, bed linens and patient gown with chlorine molecules that kill germs. Those three products alone represent approximately 330 sq. feet of surface area that can actively fight pathogens, rather than allow them to flourish. If you’re the patient in the bed, we want you to be surrounded in fabric is fighting germs, instead of harboring them.”

Up-To-Date Laundry Recertified Hygienically Clean Healthcare

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — August 4, 2017 — Up To Date Laundry, Baltimore, has again achieved Hygienically Clean (HC) Healthcare certification, reflecting their commitment to best management practices (BMPs) in laundering as verified by on-site inspection and their capability to produce hygienically clean textiles as quantified by ongoing microbial testing.

Up-To-Date was first certified in 2014. Recertification confirms the organization’s continuing dedication to infection prevention, compliance with recognized industry standards and processing healthcare textiles using BMPs as described in its quality assurance documentation, a focal point for Hygienically Clean inspectors’ evaluation. The independent, third-party inspection must also confirm essential evidence that:

  • Employees are properly trained and protected;
  • Managers understand regulatory requirements;
  • OSHA-compliant; and
  • Physical plant operates effectively.

To achieve certification initially, laundries pass three rounds of outcome-based microbial testing, indicating that their processes are producing Hygienically Clean Healthcare textiles and zero presence of yeast, mold and harmful bacteria. They also must pass a facility inspection. To maintain their certification, they must pass quarterly testing to ensure that as laundry conditions change, such as water quality, textile fabric composition and wash chemistry, laundered product quality is consistently maintained. Re-inspection occurs every two to three years.

This process eliminates subjectivity by focusing on outcomes and results that verify textiles cleaned in these facilities meet appropriate hygienically clean standards and BMPs for hospitals, surgery centers, medical offices, nursing homes and other medical facilities.

Hygienically Clean Healthcare certification acknowledges laundries’ effectiveness in protecting healthcare operations by verifying quality control procedures in linen, uniform and facility services operations related to the handling of textiles containing blood and other potentially infectious materials.

Certified laundries use processes, chemicals and BMPs acknowledged by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, American National Standards Institute and others. Introduced in 2012, Hygienically Clean Healthcare brought to North America the international cleanliness standards for healthcare linens and garments used worldwide by the Certification Association for Professional Textile Services and the European Committee for Standardization.

Objective experts in epidemiology, infection control, nursing and other healthcare professions work with Hygienically Clean launderers to ensure the certification continues to enforce the highest standards for producing clean healthcare textiles.

“Congratulations to Up To Date Laundry on their recertification,” said Joseph Ricci, TRSA president and CEO. “This achievement proves their ongoing commitment to infection prevention and that their laundry facilities take every step possible to prevent human illness.”

For The Most Demanding Applications: New High- Performance Dispersion From Jowat For The Lamination Of Interior Vehicle Parts

DETMOLD, Germany — July 21, 2017 — Jowat now supplies a new high-performance dispersion for the lamination of interior car parts: The special formulation of the dispersion based on polyurethane has been developed especially for the high requirements in real leather lamination applications and supports the manual positioning and repositioning of the sewn leather covering. In addition, the new PU dispersion 158.97 can also be used for lamination with thermoplastic foils and textile composites.

During the development of the new PU dispersion 158.97 from the Jowapur® product series, Jowat focused on the very high requirements for lamination processes with real leather, as they are used for instance in the manufacture of dashboards or door side panels. Due to the special formulation which ensures a permanent adhesion of the thermally reactivated dispersion to the carrier part and to the laminating material, the sewn covering can be positioned and repositioned as often as necessary without any risk of delamination. The new dispersion provides significant advantages compared to previous products, especially in manual edgefolding operations. Of course, Jowapur® 158.97 also fulfils the requirements for demanding lamination applications with all kinds of thermoplastic decor foils as well as textile foam and nonwoven composites.

The crosslinking time can be reduced considerably in combination with the new Jowat® Crosslinking Agent 197.65. Additionally, this crosslinker is effective in lower concentrations. The bond strength necessary for transport is build up in a shorter time and the parts are ready much faster for downline processing and delivery. The result is a more efficient manufacturing process without the need for big buffer stocks. When processed together, the new dispersion and the new crosslinking agent also provide a reduction in VOC and fogging values.
