Mimaki USA Announces Tiger-1800B Digital Textile Printing System

SUWANEE, Ga. — February 14, 2018 — Mimaki USA, a manufacturer of wide-format inkjet printers and cutters, today announced the availability of Tiger-1800B printing system in the Americas. The Tiger-1800B printer is a purpose-engineered, high production digital inkjet printer capable of direct-to-textile or transfer dye sublimation output. It can deliver large-scale production at manufacturing sites and small-scale production at on-demand sites, making it the ideal printer for digital textile applications.

The Mimaki Tiger-1800B brings operational efficiencies and reliability to large companies that are currently using analog screen-printing processes — or multiple, smaller digital units —  to produce high volume textile runs for internal vertical markets sold via business-to-business or business-to-consumer avenues. The Tiger-1800B printer enables these businesses to overcome quality, cost and time to market issues by offering more efficient operations, higher resolution printing, consistent quality for repeat orders, and reduced operating costs.

The 74.8-inch Tiger-1800B digital textile printer includes an adhesive belt transport system with belt washing technology and in-line heat drying unit for an all-in-one process for direct-to-textile printing. It includes a built-in PC with software for easy and efficient printer operation.

High efficiency for all production runs

The Tiger-1800B printer is a production model featuring 16 print heads in a staggered array for the direct-to-textile model (or 8 print heads for the transfer dye sublimation model), resulting in very high print speeds of up to 4144 square feet per hour. Usable quality can be achieved even at these high print speeds to meet volume demands, or to quickly produce shorter-run projects such as for regional or seasonal fashion requirements.

High print speeds are complemented by a sophisticated textile transport system. Stable textile transport is achieved through twin pressure roller shafts attached to the edge of the transportation belt. Textiles are uniformly transported onto the belt through the rollers.

Wrinkle and Media Jam sensors detect textile wrinkling or creasing early in order to minimize potential damage to the print heads from collisions with raised or jammed textiles.

Technologies for improved performance and productivity

The Tiger-1800B model includes a number of technologies and automated processes for consistent quality output and productivity.

A belt washing mechanism that prevents stains on fresh fabric from ink remaining on the belt. It is equipped with two squeegees to prevent splash-back, and two heaters to dry and re-activate the belt surface.

To ensure optimal print head maintenance, cleaning liquid is automatically applied to each wiper before and after head cleaning. This liquid enhances the head cleaning process and reduces daily maintenance time by ensuring a clean wiper.

The Tiger-1800B printer features Variable Dot Printing where variable ink droplet sizes — small, medium and large — are precisely placed. Smaller droplets create smoother gradients and quartertones, while large droplets produce uniform solids.

A standard Degassing Module reduces clogging by removing air bubbles in the ink, and an Ink Circulation ensures stable ink supply by constantly circulating the ink.

Optional high production upgrades

Options for the direct-to-textile model include:  Roll Media Centering Unit featuring a feeding unit with a centering device and tension bar; a Jumbo Roll Unit; a Plaited Unit; and a Drying and Take-Up Unit for high density printed fabrics. The dye sublimation model includes the Jumbo Roll Unit as a standard feature.

Suominen Initiates A New Growth Investment At Its Green Bay, Wis., Plant

HELSINKI, Finland  — February 15, 2018 — Suominen, a global nonwovens company, has decided to initiate a new growth investment project worth of approximately 6 million euros at its production plant in Green Bay, Wis. The investment involves installation of new carding machinery representing the latest technology on an existing spunlace production line. It will improve the capabilities of the plant and further supports Suominen in the development and supply of new innovative products that make lives better, according to our purpose.

Once upgraded, the production line will, for its part, improve Suominen’s capability to supply high value added nonwovens for home care, personal care and workplace wipes as well as for hygiene applications, all categories where Suominen seeks to grow. Moreover, the investment offers more efficient supply of nonwovens for baby wipes for Suominen’s customers.

Rooted In Germany, At Home In China: Mahlo And Monfongs Hold Symposium In Shantou

SAAL AN DER DONAU, Germany/SHANTOU, China — February 12, 2018 — In January, Germany-based machine manufacturer Mahlo GmbH + Co. KG and China-based Monforts Fong’s Textile Machinery Co. Ltd (Monfongs) organized an expert meeting for textile producers held in Shantou City, on the eastern coast of Guangdong, China. Round about 200 partners and customers, mainly from the province, accepted the invitation and enjoyed a day of instructive presentations on reaching the full potential of their machinery.

Both companies wanted to broaden the participants’ — mostly service technicians — understanding of how to create the best possible outcome with their machines, whether it is with maintenance or additional equipment. Members of Monfongs greeted the audience and gave lectures on the importance of service and maintenance in the morning.

Famacont PMC: ideal for knitwear industry

In the afternoon, Mahlo took the stage. Following the welcoming address by Mahlo’s Sales Director Thomas Höpfl and Joseph Tsai of Mahlo’s sales and service agent Shanghai Kuantex, Jimmy Rong from Kuantex introduced the process control system Famacont PMC-15 that determines the thread density by means of a non-contacting, optoelectronic or imaging process. The instrument is of immense value for Guangdong’s vast knitting industry. For a simple reason: knitwear is sold by weight, so a consistent product is highly important. In the production process, however, knitted goods are under substantial mechanical influences that entail stretching and by that result in a reduced basis weight. The PMC sensor at the inlet measures the course density and compares it to a pre-set specification. Corresponding to that, the computer sends a signal to the overfeed roller which regulates the fabric in-feed of the stenter machine. This way, the elongation of the fabric is compensated at the best possible rate. Another sensor at the outlet measures and visualizes the final result. Jimmy Rong explained to the audience, how they can get a better performance out of their existing machinery by installing a Mahlo Famacont PMC and hence increase the product quality and customer satisfaction. Similar is the outcome when using a Mahlo weft straightening machine which was also introduced to the audience. Subsequent to the presentations was enough time for questions and discussions.

In the course of the day it became clear how experienced Mahlo’s local service technicians are with the devices, according to Höpfl: “They can maintain the machines trustworthy and attend to many problems, which is a big advantage for our clients. Because shorter downtime means minimum production loss and higher profits in the end.” The successful symposium was closed by an evening dinner with participants and business partners that provided chances to intensify customer relationships and business contacts.

MagnaColours® Updates Range With New Migration Eliminator

BARNSLEY, England — February 15, 2018 — MagnaColours®, manufacturer of water-based screen-printing inks, has launched a new anti-migration blocker. MagnaPrint® Migration Eliminator V2 is designed to prevent the bleeding of inks throughout the printing process, and was officially unveiled at the recent ISS Long Beach show.

The product is a development on a previous Migration Eliminator created by Magna, and boasts superior bleed blocking of PVC and phthalate free water-based inks, for use on polyester and polycotton blend fabrics.

Constantine Cannon Announces A $900,000 Whistleblower Settlement With Luxury UK Retailer

LONDON — February 14, 2018 —  Constantine Cannon LLP is pleased to announce a more than $900,000 settlement on behalf of its whistleblower client in a lawsuit against Pure Collection Ltd. Pure Collection is a Harrogate, England-based e-retailer of luxury cashmere and apparel goods. The United States Government announced the settlement agreement yesterday with Pure Collection and the e-retailer’s acting CEO, Samantha Harrison. The company and Ms. Harrison have collectively agreed to a settlement of $908,100 to the U.S. Government.

This lawsuit was one of the first to be brought by a U.K. whistleblower in which the U.S. Government intervened and successfully resolved the whistleblower’s False Claims Act (FCA) allegations. The whistleblower, Andrew Patrick of Harrogate, England, brought to Constantine Cannon’s London office information regarding Pure Collection’s practices. Mr. Patrick will be awarded 18 percent of the total settlement.

The qui tam, or whistleblower, lawsuit alleged that since 2007 the defendants fraudulently and systematically avoided paying U.S. customs duties on its goods shipped from the United Kingdom to customers in the United States. In an attempt to attract more U.S.-based customers, Pure Collection engaged in a practice commonly known as “splitting.” The defendants neither admitted nor denied liability.

Whistleblower Andrew Patrick worked for Pure Collection from 2010 to 2014, first as a sales representative in its U.K. call center and then in its U.K. packaging department. Patrick was trained to systematically split customers’ large orders to successfully avoid paying U.S. customs fees, saving the company millions of dollars, according to the suit.

Patrick brought his allegations to the attention of U.S. Customs and Border Protection in 2014, and later filed a whistleblower submission with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service in 2015. After the two initial unsuccessful attempts to alert U.S. authorities, Patrick approached Richard Pike, a solicitor-advocate and partner in Constantine Cannon’s London office, who specializes in advising whistleblowers under U.S. whistleblower programs.  Mr. Patrick filed his whistleblower suit in 2016 in federal court in Maine.

Patrick is represented by Mary Inman, Richard Pike and Till Vere-Hodge in Constantine Cannon’s London office. Dan Murphy of Bernstein Shur, served as counsel in Maine, where the case was filed. Patrick is also represented by Molly Knobler of Phillips & Cohen.

“Mr. Patrick is the first British whistleblower to expose a UK company for evading U.S. import duties and only the second to receive a financial reward under the whistleblower provisions of the False Claims Act,” said Inman, a partner in Constantine Cannon’s London office whose practice focuses on representing UK and EU whistleblowers under the American whistleblower programs  “As global business expands, European whistleblowers like Mr. Patrick play an increasingly vital role in alerting the U.S. Government to fraud schemes that cross international borders.”

“Mr. Patrick should be commended for his persistence in bringing these matters to the attention of multiple U.S. authorities and his foresight in being among the handful of British citizens who have availed themselves of the American whistleblower programs,” said Pike, a partner in Constantine Cannon’s London office.  “The American taxpayers owe Mr. Patrick a debt of gratitude for his courage in coming forward to expose these practices, many of which occurred on British soil but reverberated in the U.S.”

“Pure arrogantly decided it didn’t need to play by the same rules as other retailers, and placed its own interests in profits and access to the U.S. market above the laws of the U.S. Government.” said Vere-Hodge, an associate in Constantine Cannon’s London office. “The Government’s successful resolution of Mr. Patrick’s case sends a clear message that this behavior will not be tolerated.”

The federal False Claims Act (FCA) encourages whistleblowers of any nationality to expose companies that are defrauding the U.S. Government by allowing a private party from any country to file a civil lawsuit on the government’s behalf and providing for a reward of 15 to 25 percent of the Government’s civil recovery if the government joins, or intervenes in, the case, as the Government has done here.  Patrick will receive 18 percent of the Government’s recovery.

The FCA is one of the most effective weapons in combatting fraud, waste, and abuse by those who contract with the U.S. Government. Since 2017, the U.S. has recovered upwards of $50 million in customs duties fraud cases alone.  Just last week, the Wall Street Journal observed an increase in whistleblower cases exposing customs-related wrongdoing.  Such fraud can be difficult to uncover without access to inside information; well-placed whistleblowers like Mr. Patrick are necessary to provide the information to help stop these practices.

Albany International Announces New CEO

ROCHESTER, N.H. — February 5, 2018 — Albany International Corp. announced today its Board of Directors has appointed Olivier Jarrault as president, CEO and a member of the Board to succeed Joseph G. Morone, effective March 2.

Jarrault, 56, is a 14-year veteran of Alcoa, where his career culminated in his appointment in 2011 as executive vice president and group president of Alcoa Engineered Products and Solutions (EPS), leading a portfolio of global advanced-technology components manufacturing businesses serving a number of markets, including aerospace, industrial gas turbines, commercial transportation, and building and construction. At the helm of EPS until 2016, Jarrault drove, through a combination of organic growth and several acquisitions of high performance materials companies, the transformation of the EPS value-add portfolio into a global multi-material aerospace product and solutions leader. Under Jarrault’s leadership, focused on growth, disciplined execution and operational excellence, all of Alcoa’s downstream businesses successfully increased their financial performance. EPS aerospace customers include Safran, GE, United Technologies, Boeing and Airbus. In his role as EVP and Group President of EPS, Jarrault had extensive interactions with Alcoa’s investors and Board of Directors.

Jarrault brings 26 years of aerospace and industrial experience to Albany. Prior to being named Group President of EPS, he served in a number of senior management positions at Alcoa — including as COO of EPS in 2010 and President of Alcoa Fastening Systems from 2003 to 2009 — as well as at Fairchild Fasteners and LISI Aerospace. Born in Lille, France, Jarrault earned an MS in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology and an MBA from UCLA, and is a dual citizen of the United States and France.

INVISTA’s Latest P8 Technology Sees First Successful Deployment In China

SHANGHAI — February 7, 2018 — INVISTA Performance Technologies (IPT) and Jiaxing Petrochemical Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of Tongkun Group Co. Ltd, have announced the successful start-up of Jiaxing Petrochemical’s second purified terephthalic acid (PTA) Line, utilising Invista’s latest P8 technology. The first reaction train reached 100 percent design rate in just 10 days from the first introduction of feedstock.

P8 is the very latest PTA technology platform from Invista, representing industry-leading capital productivity, variable cost and environmental footprint. It is the latest demonstration of Invista’s 30-year track record in successfully deploying new generations of PTA technology that create competitive advantage for licensees.

A ceremonial session was held by Jiaxing Petrochemical to celebrate the outstanding achievement.
